He didn't feel right today. He hurt all over and he hadn't been sleeping well for all the coughing he'd done. Seeing as it was still very early, the sun only barely over the horizon, he was allowing himself to just lie there and try to rest. He was being stubborn about it, he knew, but he just didn't want to bother Ottersplash with a little cough and aching joints. It was just from the excitement from attending the Gathering, he told himself. A silly little cold and a sore throat were nothing to really worry about. If it lasted too long he'd take it before their medicine cat. No reason to bother him if it was gone in a day or so.

Silverfrost started coughing, the fit lasting a little longer than the others. Once he settled down he felt a paw on his back, soothing him. "You've been coughing like that all night. You should see Ottersplash, it could be something serious."

The tom rolled slowly and sat up, aching all over and really just wanting to go back to sleep. Speckledleaf. She was a pretty, friendly she-cat he'd gone on patrol with plenty of times. "I'll be alright, thank you for worrying about me." He curled his tail over his paws, settling there. "Did I disturb your sleep?"

"Well yes, but it's okay. If you're sick maybe you shouldn't be in the warrior's den right now. Don't want to give it to everyone. And come on, Silverfrost. You coughed all night, woke up at least a half dozen times, and you move like it hurts you. Don't be a stubborn tom, go see Ottersplash."

It was another one of those nights. The kind where his conscience and his conscious stream of thoughts tried their damnedest to keep him awake. Brookfall's yellow eyes had narrowed, dimly glowing like fireflies from the slanting rays of moonlight slipping in through the reeds. Apart from the low croaking of frogs from their proximity to the camp stream, the only constant noise was the sound of a dry cough coming from nearby. Brookfall counted a span of twelve heartbeats before the cough would start again, though whether it lasted long or short or simply died in Silverfrost's throat as a muffled huff of air, Brookfall couldn't predict.

Speckledleaf's voice broke the pattern, and Brookfall's silvery-white head raised to look over the flanks of his sleeping Clanmates, finding Speckledleaf and Silverfrost to one side, talking quietly. He could hear what was being said, and for once, agreed without any falsehoods or self-inflicted lies. "She's right," Brookfall's voice was smooth and even, as were his movements as he left his nest and stepped deftly through the tangle of tails and limbs to reach them.

"Remember, you have an apprentice now. If it is something to worry about, you don't want him to catch it." That was Silverfrost's weakness. His compassion for others; his brother was by no means selfish, though he had his fair share of faults. Apathy was not one of them. Silverfrost was easily the most responsible of their litter; unless Stormstar still found him and Gorgeleap untrustworthy for their Purist ties (possible, though Brookfall felt confident this wasn't the case), Silverfrost was the only one who had been given his own apprentice.

Brookfall wasn't bothered by this. That would come in time. And, having a young, sharp-eyed cat to train would mean less private time for himself. Less... walks to the edge of the territory. Less time to... admire the scenery.

"I'll go with you," Brookfall offered in a show of familial solidarity. Speckledleaf looked as if she might have made that offer if he'd waited a few heartbeats later, and a tiny part of him recognized and thought it amusing how his brother's natural charm worked even when ill.

He startled when his brother spoke to him, the silver tom shifting a little so that he could see the other tom better. Well, if Brookfall had noticed too then he supposed he had to go. Silverfrost got to his paws slowly, moving like it hurt because it did. He didn't think this was neceassary, but Brookfall was right. He had to think of his apprentice. Frogpaw didn't need to see his mentor weak and coughing and sick. He had to be taught that a sick warrior should see the medicine cat, put his pride aside. He sighed then started coughing again, this time hard enough that his entire body shook.

Well, he was definitely going. Brookfall complicated the matter too much to ignore. If he didn't go now, he had no doubt his littermate would tell their mother. And Lilygleam would shred his ears if she found out he ignored his health. That was a confrontation he didn't want to have.

"Alright, I'll go." He went to the entrance of the den. "If you're coming, Brookfall." He tipped his head then had to sit down in case it would be a wait. He didn't feel his strongest, though it wasn't debilhitating.

Brookfall gave a courteous goodnight to Speckledleaf and anyone listening in, before joining his brother outside the warriors den. That Silverfrost chose to sit had not escaped his notice. He must have more than a cough.

Even after ducking his head, Brookfall's tall tufted ears still jostled the overhanging ferns that gave their open den system cover from the elements. It was times like these that he appreciated the structure of their home; there was enough of a soft breeze blowing over RainClan's island camp to keep it from growing stuffy.

"You're not the first cat I've heard coughing, as of late." Brookfall mused, observations from the morning coming back to the forefront of his mind. "With luck, it's only a passing, minor sickness. I imagine I speak for nearly all of us when I say RainClan's been through enough as it is." The Civil War. They did not need any more dead Clanmates; not when they could barely go a season without having to bury someone.

It was as if RainClan's waters had been polluted, made dark by dead things and foul intentions. However, the river was ever running; the pollution would not last forever. It was just sticking around a little longer than anyone liked.

They found the medicine cat in his den, and Brookfall did not cross into the healer's space, instead giving Silverfrost plenty of room to be examined and to get treatment. Instead, while Silverfrost explained his ailments to the stammering medicine cat, Brookfall waited until there was a natural pause in their conversation to resume where he and Silverfrost had left off.

"How is Frogpaw's training coming along?" Brookfall's tail-tip flicked, suddenly curious. Was the young tom showing any signs of Purist leanings? Berrypaw, Frogpaw and Goldpaw had grown up in the wooded cove, under Swanfeather's calculating eye and the toxic words of Leopardyowl and Petalfall.

He would know. He'd been there to witness it.

"Its going around, whatever it is." Silverfrost offered once they got started towards the medicine den, the silver tom ignoring the way his body urged him to just sit and rest. He could ignore it, but it was worrisome. He never got sick. "As long as it stays out of the nursery I'll be content." StarClan forbid it reach the kits in the nursery, or their mothers.

His ears flicked as the conversation continued, considering his brother's words. "StarClan preserve us. No more bad luck." No more death and dead clanmates, no more sad cats, just no more. Just a break was all he wished for, nothing impossible. But even then he knew this sickness was just the beginning.

Then they'd reached the medicine den and Silverfrost went in, speaking at length to Ottersplash then leaving. No reason to tell anyone what it was. He was sure their esteemed medicine cat would be dealing with the matter. And his brother had already been exposed. There was a light bout of greencough going through camp, at least so far. He'd taken a bit of catmint and exited, quietly thanking the other tom before heading to rejoin his sibling.

"He's very eager to learn. Gets a little ahead of himself still. But I'll reign him in. Being excited and eager are normal for a cat his age." He hadn't noticed anything more as of yet, and let out a sigh before he started coughing again. Just for a moment before it reigned in.

Silverfrost had received the treatment he needed, though Brookfall was not eager to return to the warriors' den. Rest seemed to be escaping him tonight, and he would rather fill the dark hours of the night with pleasant conversation than the deafening chatter of his own thoughts.

"If it wouldn't be a distraction, I'd like to accompany you and Frogpaw on your next training session," said Brookfall, fixing his yellow eyes upon his brother's vibrant blue, though some of their color had dulled ever so slightly from the illness.

Brookfall did not like going into things unprepared. Though he prided himself on his adaptive qualities, when he was given the chance to mentor, he wanted to make sure he and his hypothetical future apprentice got off on the wrong foot. Observing his brother and how Frogpaw was trained would at least provide him with a foundation to go off of.

It felt unsafe to rely on Darkrose's teachings, though she had been a good mentor in principle. He had learned much, though it was not the warrior code that was etched into his psyche like a mantra. Taking the lead, Brookfall placed one paw in front of the other, calmly steering Silverfrost toward the camp stream - where the water would refresh them both, and at least quench Silverfrost's cough momentarily.
