Twelve times. The night had fallen twelve times since Rookfrost had left. She'd been LightningClan's sole medicine cat for twelve days. This was her twelfth night of silence in the medicine cat's den. His nest was gone, cleaned out by an apprentice upon Firestar's command; there was nothing but a heavy emptiness in that den now. On the first night, the silence had been too much. The ginger she-cat had ended up dragging her nest from the confines of the medicine cat's den, just outside of it's entrance. At least that way, she'd felt closer to the stars. She didn't feel quite so alone.
She'd dozed off there, out in the open beneath the stars. It had grown colder as night drew on... But the shivering stopped eventually. She'd woken to the warm pelt of her mother, Firebird, wrapped protectively around her. Nightstep had happened upon her late in the night, and had fetched their mother, figuring Firebird was the best equipped to handle whatever it was plaguing her. And in the early hours of the morning, before the Clan had really begun to stir, Kindleflare had rattled on to her mother, spilling all her worries to the older she-cat.
The days were easier. At least then, she was busy tending to her usual duties. It felt... Normal to her. It was as night drew nearer, and she realized there was no stone-cold voice to snap this or that at her, no other presence to impose on her that the unease settled over her. Firebird had asked her many times since why she seemed so affected by Rookfrost's departure. The black tom had never been kind to her; he'd never been kind to anyone. But he'd been good at his job. She'd always felt as though he would be there to direct her (albeit harshly) if she didn't know what to do.
But now she was alone. Her paws were the sole difference between life or death for the cats of LightningClan now. And if she didn't know what to do? That was on her, it would be her fault. A strange, soft sound left her, almost like a hiccup of worry as the ginger medicine cat sat outside her den. Shivering in the cool air, her breath billowed around her in a thick cloud. She was alone, and the coming Leafbare had already begun to kill off the herbs she needed to do her job.
Deep amber eyes turned to the sky, finding nothing but darkness. The clouds were thick in the night sky, and the air carried with it a sharpness promising coming winds. No sleeping out h-here tonight... She thought to herself. Despite that, she was in no hurry to retreat into the solitude of the medicine cat's den. |

Robinflame
She had never particularly enjoyed the night time, especially when the stars were gone. It was not as if she were afraid of the darkness, no, she just much preferred the light. When the stars blazed bright in the sky and when the moon was bright, that was when the adventurous she-cat would romp across the territory, happy to be out, free under the stars and the gaze of her ancestors. Now however, the cold had settled in, and Robinflame found herself ever more inclined to find someone else to nest with. Maybe Harestrike would like to... nah, he was a great friend but the closeness would probably be too much.
As Robinflame shuffled her paws to keep warm and contemplated the possibilities, she noticed her sister, Kindleflare, standing a bit mournfully outside the medicine den. Robinflame felt equal parts angry and sympathetic for her sister. It was so stupid that she had to sleep all by herself in that den, especially with this cold! And although Robinflame had personally disliked Rookfrost to the point where she made it her life goal to annoy him until his fur started falling out, she could tell that his loss had taken some part of Kindleflare again. Realizing that her sister was as good a cat as anyone to keep warm with on this chill evening, she skittered across camp, to stop by her sister and press against her with warm purr.
"Hey Kindleflare, want some company? Those toms in the warriors den are getting annoying, and its cold outside, so I thought I'd come see how you were doing."
The calico beamed at her ginger sister, fluffing out her fur to make a show for how cold she was. It wasn't exactly freezing, but Leaf-fall was never fun, especially not until she had grown in her thicker winter coat.

She was dimly aware of a Clanmate moving outside the warrior's den. Her peripheral vision had registered it, but the ginger and white she-cat simply couldn't be bothered to tear her attention away from the dark clouds overhead to properly register who it was. Pawsteps alerted her to the cat's approach, and though Kindleflare figured she was in no danger within the camp, she still found herself glancing toward the oncoming figure out of instinct. Without warning, and before Kindleflare had much time to process what was happening, the calico frame of her younger sister was suddenly pressed to her side.
Dark amber eyes were stretched wide in alarm, one white forepaw lifted from the ground as Kindleflare's body shifted to accommodate the new weight. "R-Robinflame..?" She meowed softly, ginger ears pricking forward. As the other she-cat greeted her with a reason for being here, Kindleflare's gaze wandered back to the den from which Robinflame had just appeared. She felt her skin flush beneath her ginger and white pelt, wondering what it was like to have other cats fawn over you like Robinflame did. ...I-I suppose now I'll... N-Never find out. She thought to herself. She'd be lying if she said she didn't hold a small pinprick of regret toward her new-found, mateless life.
"O-Oh.. Um, s-sure. I'd never t-turn down your c-company, you know that." Her voice was nothing more than a whisper, but the faintest hint of a smile twitched her lip. That was the honest truth; she'd never turn down the chance to spend time with her family. "I'm... O-Okay. Just a bit, um... Lonely I guess? Especially n-now that it's getting colder... It's weird h-having the den to myself..." She admitted, the words tumbling from her mouth now that she had someone she trusted to talk to.
Leaning into her sister's warm fur, she shivered softly in the cool air. "How... How are you? ..Other than b-being disturbed by t-toms?" She asked, so caught up in her sister's sudden appearance that she didn't register the other cat's approach. |

19 MOONS LIGHTNINGCLAN WARRIOR The weather had gotten much cooler. Hard to imagine the drought of just this past greenleaf had even happened at all; the temperate climate was ideal for battle training. Fresh from the flattened grasses where LightningClan sharpened their skills, Harestrike sauntered into camp as the lean, mean, fighting machine he considered himself to be.
Where's--
A flash of splotchy fur caught his eye, and Harestrike rumbled a purr. He'd been looking for Sunblaze or Blazefang, ready to challenge one or the other to a real fight, but conversing with Robinflame was just as good a way to spend his evening as any. Seeing her make a beeline for the medicine cat's den, Harestrike's ears pricked forward, suspecting to hear the first few hints of a cough from the pretty she-cat, but that assumption fell flat.
She was just visiting her sister. Good. Then he didn't feel so bad for interrupting.
"Hey Kindleflare, want some company? Those toms in the warriors den are getting annoying, and its cold outside, so I thought I'd come see how you were doing."
Harestrike smirked; his brother was probably in there. He'd bet a lucky rabbit's foot that Thrushwhisker was one of the toms giving Robinflame such a headache; aiming to repair the damage (and thus improve their relationship), Harestrike walked over, voice warm. "Tell me their names, Robinflame. I can go knock some sense into them for you," he purred, greeting both she-cats with a nod and an impish gleam to the eye.

Robinflame
The calico she-cat purred warmly despite, her sister's quiet uncertain voice. Robinflame had wondered if she might be bogged down by her mentor's death, but she had hoped without his commanding presence her sister may become more sure of herself. Maybe she just needed some more time to recover and make a place for herself. Robinflame pulled back slightly, but stayed close enough she could sense her sister's body heat, wrapping her patched tail around herself. When Kindleflare said she would never turn down her sister's company, Robinflame giggled. "I don't think you'd be able to stop me if you tried." Then Kindleflare confirmed Robinflame's suspicions and the she-cat nodded solemly, or tried to, she looked a little overly serious and silly as she did it. "Heals wound with time. Umm I mean wounds heal with time... I think thats what mum used to say."
She said it sheepishly, since their mother had been fairly old around the time she was born, Robinflame had gotten away with a lot more than her siblings had, and wasn't very good at paying attention to what her mother said. But her embarrassment was cut off by her sister's question about how she was doing.
"Oh Im alright. The cold s getting to me a bit. Guess I need to find someone to share a nest with," she scrunched her face up and twitched her whiskers, not noticing Harestrike's approach. "It's just all the toms are so full of themselves, if I even suggested it, they'd get the completely wrong idea, and then I'd have some infatuated idiot falling and I'd have to let him down."
When Harestrike spoke up beside her, she jerked, heat flooding her. Had he heard that? She hadn't really meant it.
"Oh h-hi Harestrike!" recovering from a hiccuping start, an awkward pause before she realized what he had said. "Oh well I just kidding really, nobody's really bothering me. I mean your brother is teasing me, but who doesn't he tease?" She looked him up and down. "I would ask what you are doing out in the cold, but Im guessing it doesnt affect you as much as it does me."

19 MOONS LIGHTNINGCLAN WARRIOR Harestrike's ears pricked forward, and he felt a frisson of energy ripple through his body at what he'd just overheard. She wants someone to share her nest with? From what he knew of her, Robinflame didn't seem like the type at all to start settling down now. What was she, nineteen moons? Seven moons ago, we were still in the apprentices' den. Harestrike mentally snorted at this, and his surprise was quickly abated by Robinflame's following commentary.
"It's just all the toms are so full of themselves, if I even suggested it, they'd get the completely wrong idea, and then I'd have some infatuated idiot falling and I'd have to let him down."
Harestrike laughed. She was right. Of course, she was also very pretty - not that he'd noticed that often or anything - what tom wouldn't get the wrong idea? "Just put your nest next to mine, that'll fix your problems." Harestrike replied, his eyes glinting. He couldn't believe Robinflame had just stuttered. She really hadn't expected him to show up like he had.
Stretching languidly, his claws slicing up the grass-blades under paw as he extended them fully, Harestrike fluffed up his pelt thereafter, as if the she-cat's mention of the cold had reminded him to take stock of his surroundings. "It's not that bad for me. It's easier to warm up if you're hunting." Deciding to be the gentletom and extend an invitation to the sisters, the tabby-and-white warrior let a coaxing grin settle onto his muzzle. "Do you two want to catch some rabbits? Or do you only catch plants, Kindleflare?"
It was only a bit of teasing. Medicine cats were important, but that didn't mean they were excluded from Harestrike's (usually) harmless goading.

Kindleflare smiled softly at Robinflame's attempt to comfort her, pressing her nose gratefully to the younger she-cat's ear. "Time h-heals all wounds, I believe..." She offered gently, recalling the phrase Firebird had so often repeated in her younger years. The LightningClan medicine cat listened quietly as her sister explained her troubling circumstances, enable to hold back a small giggle at the description. Ginger ears snapped up as Harestrike's voice entered the conversation, the medicine cat dipping her head gingerly in greeting to the LightningClan warrior. Content to settle into the background and listen to the exchange, Kindleflare found herself startled when Harestrike directed a question her way.
straightening slightly, Kindleflare felt her fur heat up. "O-Oh, n-no I can s-still h-hunt..." She mewed embarrassedly. Before anything more could be said, a white and black shape seemed to melt from the shadows nearby, a rabbit hanging from powerful jaws. Kindleflare stared at a pair of sharp yellow eyes she could recognize anywhere. Nightstep paused by the small gathering, depositing the rabbit at his paws so he could properly greet his sisters. Nightstep touched noses with both Kindleflare and Robinflame; to Harestrike, he offered a polite dip of his muzzle before meowing.
"Kindleflare was named a warrior before you were born, Harestrike. Don't underestimate her." His tail flicked slowly behind him, yellow eyes sliding to the sister in question as she ducked her head shyly. "Pardon my interruption, I simply wished to greet my sisters briefly." He added with a charming grin before stooping to collect his rabbit and wave a farewell to the small gathering. Deep orange eyes flicked up to Harestrike again. "I... Might be a l-little out of practice b-but... I'll figure it out..." She trailed off. |

ROBINFLAME The calico shecat nodded at her sisters words about time. Robinflame knew that Kindle flare would be fine, and butted her head against her sisters chin affectionately. Harespring on the other paw, was being a pain. "Sure of course that would solve the problem! Except that then everyone else would think we were a thing. And I would never hear the end of it from your brother." She aimed a half-hearted swat at him just for good measure, grinning all the time. He mentioned hunting and how that warmed you up, and she rolled her eyes. "Of course hunting warms you up silly! But it's the middle of the night!" Then he mentioned Kindle flare and not being sure if she could hunt, and Robinflame had to snort and a make a chatter sound of annoyance. Before she could reprimand him though, Night step appeared, and Robinflame greeted him warmly, rubbing up against him and he and Kindlflare reminded the silly young warrior that Kindlflare had been a warrior before a medicine cat. The calico fluffed up her fur, smiling a long suffering smile. "Not that any of that matters at this moment because it's the middle of the night, and it is far too cold for us to be out hunting, let alone any rabbits to be out of their dens. So we shall have to find alternative ways of warming ourselves, don't you think Harestrike? You can always reassure yourself of your worth tomorrow by hunting once it is light, and then I'll come with you and trounce you." She smirked challengingly. "Kindlflare could be the judge too, if she isn't overwhelmed by any clan injuries." BlooRey DVD Fawn
