18 Moons. She-Cat. NightClan. No I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
Hollystorm had no qualms against going on Dawn Patrol. Though usually more adept at hunting at night, the black warrioress saw the intelligence of hunting during the day and making sure their borders were freshly marked. The last thing any cat wanted was TreeClan or RainClan getting any ideas; I have an apprentice of my own now. That was a satisfying thought, and one that had her rising out of her nest early at Redcloud's beckoning, to collect the sleeping kitten from the apprentices' den.
"Wake up, Coalpaw, Sootpaw. Dawn patrol." Her voice was quiet but commanding, and each kitten was given a firm lick across the ears to stir them, before the NightClan warrior left to rejoin Redcloud and Dustspots in the center of camp.
They were going to be hungry and drowsy and hardly focused on the task at hand, but Hollystorm felt no sympathy for them. Only a cool amusement over such unstructured little lives; it was their jobs as mentors to shape them into the proper NightClan warriors they were always meant to be. Dimstar would accept no less from his offspring. With a wary glance towards the leader's den, where both Coalpaw's father and her own mentor, Starlingcry, were resting, Hollystorm half-expected the silver-eyed figurehead to appear just because she'd thought about him.
Shaking her head of that silly superstition, she uttered a mrrow or two of laughter at Coalpaw's appearance, the long-haired tom looking scruffier than a kit that wandered through a bramble bush backwards. "We will catch prey on the way back. I know it's early, but the best time to learn about the territory is during the daylight; you'll have to be sharp, Coalpaw. We're looking for fox tracks."
After Redcloud and Smokefur had chased a fox out of NightClan's territory the other day, Hollystorm thought it was a good opportunity for the apprentices to see the tracks and smell the stale fox's scent before they ever had to encounter one. Seeing a predator's pawprint in the mud would put the vulpine menace into perspective.
Hollystorm didn't want Coalpaw getting any ideas about heroics. After what the fox had done to her brother, to Palebreeze... Her green eyes briefly showed pain, and she resisted the urge to run to Smokefur's den to check up on Coyotepaw, but she scratched her claws across the cavern floor to get her bearings back. They will know the dangers of our territory. Mark my words. Hollystorm glanced to Redcloud, trusting their new deputy to lead them out of the cavern.
Hollystorm smoothed down a pesky tuft of fur on the back of Coalpaw's neck, half expecting him to duck away from her caretaking.

Look out to the future, But it tells you nothing Coalpaw had been slept well along side his sister. His tail draped over her body as he pressed in his back against her. It felt a lot like sleeping in the nursery which helped him in the entire transition process what was early apprenticed hood. The fluff that was his pelt had started to even out. He looked less like a chaotic mess that was often attributed to kithood.
As he continued to sleep the young tom heard his name being called. At first he wanted to ignore it but as his sister's name was also called Coalpaw gradually opened his eyes to feel Hollystorm's tongue against his ears. Coalpad didn't know how to react. Starlingcry and Gracklefire were the only to cats to every lick him in order to wake him up. He might never admit it, but it was a gesture he appreciated.
Rising to his paws, Coalpaw flicked his tail over Sootpaw's nose to wake her up before tilting his ears toward Hollystorm and what she had to say. He hadn't thought about eating anything until she mentioned it and in that moment his tummy rumbled. However, he didn't dare question her.
Exiting the apprentice den he gathered around Redcloud before looking toward his mentor. Feeling her attempt to smooth down a bit of his fur had him darting forward a bit. It was one thing for her to lick his ears but something entirely different for him to groom his fur.

Sootpaw had started to warm up to the idea of being an apprentice after her ceremony was completed, it was a delayed reaction for sure but the realization that Redcloud was her mentor finally had finally hit her. When the lick across her ears roused Sootpaw from her slumber it drug her mind kicking and screaming from its deepest recesses, this left her in a poor state. Propelling herself out of the den with nothing but motivational energy she chirped, "M'up!" before rolling her front left paw awkwardly. Sootpaw didn't even know what was happening as she lost her balance and skidded face first across the camp floor. Rolling back onto her paws with a hiss Sootpaw spoke again, "Now I really am awake..." After giving herself a few licks out of sheer embarrassment she glared up at her mentor, the tumble had certainly soured her mood. "The sun isn't even up yet..." Fawn @marshymutt Hellion

Redcloud waited patiently for the two apprentices to join them, watching as Sootpaw bounded out of the den at full force only to end up tumbling over onto her face moments later. The young deputy did her best to hide a laugh at the kitten's misfortune, though the obvious amusement on her face certainly did nothing to help hide it. Her face soon straightened when Sootpaw glared up at her and complained about the sun being up. Or at least to Redcloud it sounded like complaining. "The sun will be up by the time we get back. Still, it may seem quite early to be heading out on a patrol but It must be done to ensure the safety of the clan and the sanctity of our borders. Now as Hollystorm said, we'll be keeping an eye out for fox tracks. There have been a few unlucky encounters with hungry foxes on our territory as of lately and it would be best for you two to learn how to identify their scent and tracks so you can avoid them in the future." She added, eyes glancing carefully from each member of their little party before speaking once more. "Now, let's go, if any of you have any questions you may ask while we walk." She mewled out, taking lead of the group and beginning to walk in the direction of the Deer Path. Fawn @poptart Hellion

18 Moons. She-Cat. NightClan. No I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
A dark-furred kitten took a comical tumble, and Hollystorm's eyes glowed with mirth, the green looking greener with the effort to suppress a smile. She shared a smirking glance with Redcloud, before the deputy took charge of the situation, leading the group up and out of the dark entrance to NightClan's camp.
Coalpaw's avoidance of her grooming hadn't gone unnoticed, and that too brought a snarky purr to her throat. Little furball. Someday he'd grow into all that fur of his; until then, he looked like a tuft of fur from a cat that had gotten into a fight. When she'd caught a glimpse of him sleeping curled up in the nursery when she'd been visiting Starlingcry, it had been hard to imagine there were two little eyes and a little face in there under all that fuzz.
The subject of foxes had the black-furred warrioress turning serious one more, and she kept a watchful eye on their surroundings, her sleek pelt rippling as they passed through shadows and patches of light where the dawn was trying to poke through. "Can either of you tell me what a fox looks like?" Starlingcry had probably mentioned them to her litter--what queen wouldn't? They were a frequent menace to NightClan's territory, along with raccoons and the occasional badger.
Expecting the offspring of Starlingcry and Dimstar to know at least the basics (after all, why would Dimstar of all cats allow his kits to leave the nursery with empty heads? He must have taught them a few things), Hollystorm brought up the rear, listening for their answers with pricked ears.
The always strange scent of the large, hooved animals the Clan cats called deer made Hollystorm's pelt prickle; they weren't dangerous (as long as you stayed away from their feet), but their size made her uneasy. It was unpleasant to think there were animals even taller than a lynx walking around in the valley beyond.

Look out to the future, But it tells you nothing Coalpaw watched as Sootpaw stumbled. He didn't rush to her aid. She didn't seem hurt and as his sister regained her balance the incident was forgotten. As they continued out of the camp and his sister's complain warmed his ears Coalpaw wanted to shush her. There was no point complaining to go on a dawn patrol, it had to be done might as well grin and bear it.
Coalpaw followed after Redcloud, careful to pain attention to what was going on around him and avoid running into her. Coalpaw had very little interaction with NightClan's new deputy, but he respected her still. Dimstar had chosen her so she must be a capable warrior. Perhaps she could be someone he looked up to, after his own mentor and family members.
No questions were burning in him as he followed behind her, but his maw was open to catch any extra scents. A lot of smells of damp earth were making certain smells stand out. He wondered for a moment if it was the opposite during the drier moons.
Titling his head to look behind him toward his mentor, Coalpaw tail flicked to show that he had the answer. Not waiting to give Sootpaw a chance, Coalpaw replied.
"A fox normally has dark red fur with a white belly and face markings and their tails are really bushy," Coalpaw answered looking between both warrior to see if he was correct. He was almost certain he was right. He was repeating exactly what his mother told him about foxes during one of her many lessons. Starlingcry had been very careful to tell her kits what to be wary as they grew up.

6 Moons. Apprentice. Nightclan.Sootpaw trudged along behind the cats that seemed to be in a much better mood then she was, all excitement she had felt was gone after her tumble and she was currently filled with nothing but annoyance and embarrassment. The walk through the forest seemed to quickly modify her attitude however, it still wasn't great but she no longer wanted to growl to herself under her breath as they walked. The apprentice used more of her eyes than her nose as she took in the sights of the forest which were still quite new to her, it amazed her to think this had been just outside of camp all her life. As Hollystorm posed the fox question Sootpaw as in her own little world and missed the initial question, luckily she was bailed out by her brothers response. From Coalpaw's answer Sootpaw quickly inferred he was talking about a fox and added an answer of her own. "They are also smelly and ugly..."

NightClan Deputy - 30 Moons - She-Cat Another gentle, airy laugh managed to escape Redcloud's maw at the rather kittenish insult Sootpaw made about foxes. "Well, they might not be as smelly or ugly as say....Lionstar, but you're definitely not wrong." She mewled out in amusement.
"All jokes aside, you're both technically right. Foxes do indeed have ginger fur, bushy tails and an unpleasant, pungent odor. Which is why we're going to be making a brief stop when we get over to the Deer Path. Not long ago I helped protect Smokefur from a fox there and I think it would be the perfect place for you young ones to learn how to identify the tracks and the scent of a fox. "
Redcloud wasn't entirely sure how fresh the scent would be, but she figured it would be safer for them to learn without the looming danger of a fox lingering around. Even if it was somehow better to learn with an actual fox around, she wasn't about to allow that to happen. She would fight to keep these apprentices safe no matter what the cost would be, it would be incredibly foolish to put them in such obvious danger.

18 Moons. She-Cat. NightClan. No I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
Hollystorm was pleased by Coalpaw's answer; it was good that he knew at least that much. Her assumptions about his nursery education had been right. While Redcloud led them to the deer path, Hollystorm began to detect the faint whiff of both cat-scent and fox - some of it was Smokefur's and Redcloud's - but there was definitely that pungent stink Redcloud had mentioned.
Her claws unsheathed, remembering the injury her brother Coyotepaw had sustained a few moons ago at the vicious claws and teeth of the same animal. The fox had been killed - how else did NightClan handle threats? With a merciless strike to the throat, that's how - but just knowing there had been another one in the territory was enough to make the fur along her spine raise just so.
Hollystorm investigated the area, waving the group over when she found a unique set of prints in the rain-dampened deer path. "Look closely, Sootpaw and Coalpaw. Do you see the claw marks on the fox print? Cats don't walk around with their claws out, but badgers and foxes can't sheathe theirs like we can sheathe ours." That was a good way to tell the difference in tracks; badgers also, usually, had very very large, very wide paws that were impossible to miss. They were heavy, lumbering animals, so their prints were easy to find on wet days.
While the apprentices got a good look, Hollystorm glanced around, keeping close watch on their surroundings. "I'll mark the border," she mewed, brushing past Redcloud and continuing to the edge of their territory. There were deer prints here as well - and she wouldn't be surprised if Redcloud mentioned them. Focusing on renewing the markers, she kept one ear pinned back for any questions from Coalpaw.

Look out to the future, But it tells you nothing Coalpaw's ears twitched at the sound of Sootpaw's voice added her own to answer to him. He turned his head to her and gave an approving nod. Even if he didn't show it, Coalpaw cared deeply about his sister and wanted her to do well, however, in that same breath he wasn't always going to bail her out. Their relationship was unique to say the least but it was normal to him and one he was comfortable in.
Hearing Redcloud mention that they were going to see some fox tracks had Coalpaw's eyes growing wide and his heart start to pound. As a young tom he hadn't gotten to see many exciting thing and even if he wasn't a living fox, the tracks were still pretty cool. His excitement was evident in the rapid twitch at the tip of his tail.
Coalpaw had a particular innate ability of having an eidetic memory. While in the realm of his young life he hadn't fully understand that it made him different, the exposure to the fox tracks would prove to be forever imprinted in his memory. The ability aside, Coalpaw was simply excited to be near something dangerous.
Keeping near his sister as they progressed on, Coalpaw's eyes were glancing around rapidly to all the new sights, even his nose was busy sorting out the various scents. It was new and thrilling and continued to be shown in his rapid tail movements.
Seeing his mentor wave them over, Coalpaw trotted past Sootpaw to stand beside his mentor and look closely at the paw prints in the soft ground. As Hollystorm explained to him about the difference in fox claws, Coalpaw looked at his own forepaw and unsheath and resheathed them a few times to test it out. As Hollystorm said she was going to mark the border, Coalpaw looked back to Redcloud and his sister before taking a few steps to follow Hollystorm a bit.
"Are foxes a really big threat to us? Or are badgers worse?" Coalpaw asked his mentor, showing a small sliver of fear. It seemed despite his excitement about seeing the tracks of learning about the creatures, there were lingering doubts about his safety and that of his family and clanmates.
