Silence and nothing more. There was no noise to be heard other than the deathly silence that surrounded the blue eyed white kit that was Cloudkit. His head was low, and he sat alone outside the nursery. All the rest of the kits were playing and having fun, but Cloudkit didn't feel like playing right now. Beside, he didn't know any of them. Sure, some were his siblings, and some were just kits from other queens, but he knew none of their names, he didn't even know his. He didn't see a point in joining in if he didn't know who they were, and besides, even if he did, he wouldn't know the game even if they told him. He wouldn't know the rules, he wouldn't know what to do, he wouldn't know anything. He was deaf, everything was silent, and that was a curse. He looked up towards the kits for a moment, his eyes full of sadness before looking down once more to stare at the ground.

Minkpaw huffed as she sat on the edge of the camp, thinking non-specific angst-ridden thoughts as she tended to do if she was left with herself for too long. She was making herself so miserable that at that moment she was seriously contemplating asking Robinflame if they could go out on a training trip, but as she scanned the camp she couldn't spot her mentor, instead sighting little Cloudkit in front of the nursery.
StarClan bless him, he looks more miserable than me
She paused at the thought, then tried to think about what exactly in her life gave her the right to be even remotely as miserable as a deaf kit who couldn't communicate with his family or friends. Having thought of nothing, she felt chastised and stood up, debating walking over to him. He was half her age, but she was only 6 moons old herself and it wasn't like she was ancient, he looked like he needed a serious pick-me-up.
She felt pity blossom in her chest, then shame for feeling pity, since she doubted that Cloudkit enjoyed being the source of such a feeling. Not entirely sure what she was planning on, the young apprentice padded over to the small white kit, picking up a leaf on her way and plopping herself down to sit next to him. Sure now that she'd got his attention, she batted the leaf in front of him, tempting him to play with it, and by extension to play with her.

Cloudkit lifted his head up slowly as somebody sat down in front of him. He stared at her, and watched as she battered a leaf in front of him. He looked to the leaf for a moment before gently batting at it, although it was obvious he didn't really care for it. It brought no real enjoyment to him. He looked to her straight in the eyes, before speaking softly.
"Why bother playing with me? I don't know your name."
Of course, he knew he wouldn't hear her answer, and so he looked to the ground as he gently battered the leaf in front of him. His voice was full of sorrow, he didn't need to hear to know that. All he wanted was a way to communicate. He just wanted to be able to talk in some way, instead of knowing one half of the conversation, and even then, sometimes he could swear he was a mute for he couldn't even hear himself.

Even if it was a half-hearted response, Minkpaw was glad to see Cloudkit bat at the leaf, perhaps her attempt to reach out wasn't too misguided. A lack of blatant rejection was always promising.
As Cloudkit turned to look at her however, she could see that he was still obviously very upset. His eyes looked starkly blue against his light fur, and for a second the apprentice felt caught off-guard and exposed in his young gaze.
"Since when do you need to know someone's name to play with them?"
She snapped back impulsively, but he had looked back at the ground, so probably hadn't even noticed that she had said anything. She paused, trying to wrack her brain for something that might work. He could obviously see just fine, so maybe if she tried communicating with something visual?
The she-cat stood up, padding a step or two and turning so that she was facing Cloudkit face to face, then crouched so that they were on eye-level.
"Doesn't. Matter."
She mewed slowly, trying to move her mouth more than was strictly needed for the words, and shaking her head a little to try and drive home the meaning. For good measure, she then grinned and lashed her tail playfully, wiggling her front paws into the ground before batting at the leaf again, gently and playfully trying to steal it from Cloudkit's paws.

Cloudkit looked up slightly as Minkpaw tried to speak with him. He tilted his head, not quite understanding what she was trying to say, with the smiling and playfulness, plus, the added fact that she was shaking her head, she didn't care? It doesn't matter? He wasn't sure but he felt like he had some sort of idea what she was trying to say to him.
"You.....don't care? Or......it doesn't matter?"
He tilted his head slightly, before looking up to the sky. He then noticed that she had taken the leaf from him. He stared at it and gently reached out and battered at it once again, however, it was with the same half hearted attitude as before. Cloudkit would be much happier if he knew his name, he had to admit that, but sadly, there was no way for him to know. He couldn't hear his name being called, he didn't even know the sound of his own voice, and that was what bothered him the most.

6 Moons. LightningClan. She-Cat. "Doesn't matter!"
She repeated as the kit tilted his head in confusion, but he had looked up at the sky again, so he probably didn't see her mouth it. He seemed to be reacting to the leaf-playing, but the kit looked like his heart really wasn't in it. There was something bothering him that was a bit more deep-set than just not being able to play with anyone it seemed.
I guess that makes sense. I doubt the other kits just excluded him out of sheer bullying. They probably tried playing with him and it just didn't work out, so now they ignore him
The apprentice felt a bit unsure now. Should she keep trying to force a playful attitude even though he wasn't really buying into it? Should she leave him alone? Try to find out what was wrong?
The brown she-cat frowned a little, tilting her head in turn. She opted for an attempt at communication, playing her ears and raising her eyebrows in an exaggerated show of confusion.
"What's. Wrong?"
She mewed, trying to see if there was something specific that she might be able to help with.

Cloudkit had no idea she was trying to talk to him. His eyes were directed at the ground. After a moment, he raised his head to look at her when he saw her play with her ear and raise her eyebrow with a look of confusion. He didn't hear what she had said, but he could only guess. He lowered his head once more, before speaking quietly, but just loud enough for her to hear.
"I don't know you. I don't know anyone here. Everyone is a stranger to me, even myself. I don't know any of your names, not even my own. I can't hear hear the sound of my own voice. I don't see a point in playing when I can't hear the rules of the game, or what I am meant to do. I don't know nothing about clan life, It's all a mystery to me, and it is all it will ever be, and people wonder why I look so miserable all the time? Every night, I wish I can hear my voice, just once. To hear what comes out when I speak, but then I wake up, and I am in reality again and all I hear is the eerie silence."
This time, he didn't look down, he was curious as to what her reaction was going to be. His ears dropped sadly, and it was clear Cloudkit was deeply saddened.

6 Moons. LightningClan. She-Cat.
Minkpaw perked up her ears to listen to Cloudkit as he spoke, frowning at the view of the world he was painting. He was right of course, and the idea seemed frightening and eerie to her. How would it feel to not even know your own name? To have no idea what was going on half the time too. Did he know the name of the clan? Did he know the name of his own mother? He must have had some kind of hearing to start with though, or he wouldn't know how to speak, perhaps the fact that he could talk could be used to his advantage.
The apprentice's expression shifted from sadness to a vague hope based off an idea. Hadn't he managed to guess what she was saying the last two times she tried to communicate? Perhaps a bit of body language and mouth-reading might get him further than he thought it would.
His own name seemed like a good start, and Minkpaw sat back on her haunches and raised her paw to catch his attention.
"You."
She mewed, extending her paw until it gently touched the kit. She then lighted up her front legs, balancing tentatively back on her haunches and extending her paw up to the sky, gesturing as best she could at the clouds.
"Cloud."
She mewed after she had dropped back onto her front legs.

Cloudkit tilted his head for a moment, looking to Minkpaw as she touched him, then as she pointed to the clouds, his head tilted more. He looked up to the sky and stared at it for a minute, before looking back to her. What was she trying to say?
"Me......Sky?"
Was his name Sky? He then looked up once more, and saw fluffy clouds in the sky. He stared at them for a minute, before looking back to her once more.
"Or.......Cloud? Are.....are you trying to tell me my name?"
He wasn't sure, but that was the impression he was getting, especially since she pointed to him. Well, more liked touched him. He stayed focused on her, curious what she was trying to tell him, and honestly, he hoped he would understand her. To be able to know his name would make him so much happier. He may never know what his voice sounds like, but at least he would know what he was called. All he wanted then was to know who everyone else was.

6 Moons. LightningClan. She-Cat. Minkpaw shook her head as Coudkit said "sky," then nodded vigorously as he said "cloud" and guessed that she was trying to tell him his own name.
"Yah!"
She grinned, repeating the movement again in order to cement it.
"You. Cloud!"
She meowed, smiling broadly. If he could be taught his own name, then there was technically no limit to what he could be taught if someone had the time to act it out to him. She paused, trying to think of how on earth she was going to communicate her own name. A mink wasn't exactly a common animal for kits to be taught about, being a bit of a rare creature to come across in the forest. She could try creeping around on the ground and acting sneaky, but she was pretty sure that her attempts wouldn't really go down that well.
Worth a try?
She shrugged to herself, then attempted to commit. The apprentice lifted her paw again, and pressed it against her own chest, then crouched down and tried to walk around in the sneakiest way she could mine, arching her back in that weird way that weasels, stoats, and minks did before pretending to dig a little hole in the ground, looking very silly as she did so.

Cloudkit watched her closely and gave a small smile when she nodded. Cloud? His name was Cloud? He had always wondered what his name was, he had always wanted to know who he was. Well, now he finally did, and he felt a little bit happier. Sure, he didn't know the sound of his own voice still, but at least he knew just a little more about himself.
"Cloud, my name is Cloud? Thank you."
This was the closest he had ever came to actually having a conversation. If only he could hear, then his dream would really become a reality. He then looked to her as she began to act weirdly, arching her back and digging in the ground. He had no idea what she was trying to do.
"Uuuh, rabbit? Squirrel? Dig? I don't know."
He tilted his head slightly, trying to work out what she was trying to show him now but he was completely confused. He had not the slightest idea.

6 Moons. LightningClan. She-Cat. Cloudkit's confusion was plain to see, and for a bit Minkpaw kept trying to act it out. She shook her head at what Cloudkit was guessing, and started walking around with her back arched as high as she could manage, ending up looking more like she was deeply startled instead of looking like a mink.
This isn't working
She shook her head, snorting at her own silly attempts.
"Okay okay, erm..."
She paused, sitting back down and concentrating hard. What could key him off to it being a mink? What did minks do? They had that funny arched back, but she couldn't pull that off. She tried locking eyes with Cloudkit and mouthing it instead. Perhaps that might work, since she wasn't sure if he would be able to guess if she just kept arching her back.
"Mink."
She mewed slowly, moving her mouth slowly in the hope that he might see the shape of the word and be able to guess off that.

Cloudkit continued to watch Minkpaw, and it was just confusing. Although, it seemed she figured out that he had no idea, for she shook her head and stopped her act. He was about to speak, when suddenly she began to mouth something. He watched closely, trying to read the words coming from her mouth. When she had finished speaking he stared at her for some time while trying to decipher what he had just saw. He honestly wasn't too sure what she was trying to say.
"Uuuh, Sink? Tink? Wink? Mink?"
He tilted his head slowly, making as many guesses as he could. Of course, he still didn't know, or even understand about the suffix like -paw. As far as he knew, it was just Mink. Although, that would certainly be a strange name. He continued to stare at her, tilting his head slightly as he waited for some sort of indication of how close he came at trying to guess what she was saying.

6 Moons. LightningClan. She-Cat. "MINK! YES!"
She nodded again, relieved and happy that Cloudkit had managed to guess her name from her mouthing.
"With a bit of practice, you could probably read muzzles"
She commented, though she was relatively sure that he wouldn't be able to catch that. She decided to reiterate what they'd just gone over, to be sure.
"Cloud."
She pressed her paw to his chest again.
"Mink."
She pressed her paw to her own chest. It seemed like the suffix wouldn't be important for now. Besides, suffixes changed as a cat grew up, so it was much more reliable to know the prefix, especially since Cloudkit was only a kit still and had plenty of stuff to learn as it was.
That said... I knew that stuff when I was a kit...
She settled on the idea, motioning to Cloudkit that she had more to add. She pointed at him again,
"Cloud..."
then pressed her two paws close together to indicate something little,
"Kit"
another pause.
"Cloudkit"
Then at herself, holding her paw up,
"Minkpaw"

Cloudkit tilted his head as she smiled at the last name, and nodded her head. Mink? That was who he was talking to. He gave a small smile, this was the closest he had gotten to having a conversation. He looked up to the sky for a moment, when she touched him. He looked down and watched her mouth again. 'Cloud' she said, at least he was sure. It looked to be the same mouth movement as before. Then she pointed to herself and spoke again. 'Mink' was her name, and it seemed like the same mouth movement she had made just. After that, she tried something new. She spoke his name again, and then began to motion with her paws, pressing them something together like she was holding something small in which she spoke.
"Cloud......small?"
She spoke again, and he watched closely, trying to figure it out.
"Cloud.....kit?"
He was confused, that was for sure. Then she pointed to herself and held up her paw. This indication was very obvious for him. He wasn't stupid, he had a good idea what she was trying to say.
"Minkpaw? I don't understand. what is with the end name?"
He found it weird honestly, did every cat have their little end bit? He looked to himself, then looked inside the nursery. Cloudkit? He continued to stare in the nursery, before looking back at Minkpaw.
"Cloudkit.....? Cloudkit because I am a kit still? Why?"
Cloudkit had intelligence for sure. Given the clues, he could work things out. He just didn't understand them when he had.
