Today was the day, it was finally time. Tinytail had an apprentice at long last. She was in charge of teaching one of Nightclan's apprentices all her skills so they were ready to be a warrior. She would make sure this apprentice was the best apprentice ever seen. She smiled and stood up slowly. She stretched herself out and walked out of the warrior's den. She wondered what lesson she should teach first, she would like to say battle training, however, it was important she kept her eyes on the enemy, and it was even more important that her own apprentice knew how to do just that. So, it would be border control first. She walked up to the apprentice den and stuck her head in to see the golden orange cat that was Squirrelpaw. She had been told that she was shy, however, Tinytail would soon help her get out of that habit, she would make sure of it. "Squirrelpaw, wake up, it's time to begin your training." She waited by the entrance of the den as she waited for her to wake up. She had to admit, she was excited to start training her new apprentice. It would be a great chance for her to prove how great of a warrior she was! Silver

For once Squirrelpaw had decided to sleep until the sun was fully up in the sky instead of venturing out alone as she'd become prone to doing lately. This choice proved not to be a good one when suddenly the den was invaded by the loud, excited voice of the Warrior that had been selected as her mentor. Letting out a loud squeak of surprise as she was roused rather forcefully, the young Apprentice none-the-less did rise from her place and stretched to work the kinks out from her muscles before padding out on silent paws after the she-cat that was to teach her. Tinytail - her Mentor - seemed to be an excitable cat and poor Squirrelpaw felt that she was going to be overwhelmed by that trait very quickly if the older she-cat didn't learn to tone herself down a bit. She wasn't Cardinalpaw, after all, she didn't tolerate loud cats very well.
The pale orange she-cat felt very much like she was some sort of...well learning tool for her Mentor. Tinytail seemed much too excited about being her Mentor and it made the shy she-cat very uncomfortable. She still came as she was called though and paused, tail twitching, just next to her new Mentor. Why did she always have to get the noisy ones? She'd rather be out among the dark and the trees than dealing with this...radiant ball of excited sunshine. She blinked slowly, realizing how rude and hateful that thought had been; two things Squirrelpaw was not. Maybe she wasn't all the way awake yet or something. Tinytail was going to teach her how to be a proper Warrior, and she knew she should be grateful even if the bubbly personality of the she-cat did grate on her sensitive nerves just a bit. She'd get through it, because she wanted to learn. That didn't mean, however, that she had to like it very much.
She hoped Tinytail settled down before too long and all this bouncing around and overeager excitement was just the rush of having an Apprentice for the first time. If not, this was going to be a long few moons for poor Squirrelpaw. Nice would only get her so far before even her patience ran thin. She had to try though; because she wanted to be a Warrior and be useful to the clan. She wasn't exceptional like Cardinalpaw, by by Star Clan she was going to do her best to make some sort of difference because this was her clan too! She forced herself to take a deep, calming breath before offering a tiny smile to her Mentor as well as a quiet greeting. "G-good day to you Tinytail."

It has been just that, Tinytail was excited to get her first apprentice, however when Squirrelpaw came and stood beside her, she became serious at once. She stared at her apprentice like there was a life and death situation at hand. "It's nice to see you up Squirrelpaw. I was going to take you battle training today, but I thought it was best to check on the borders instead, you can never trust the other clans. They are all enemies, you never know when they'll attack, that's why you need to know the territory like the bottom of your paw. When I'm done with you, every clan will fear the name Squirrelpaw. They will never dare to attack Nightclan, or be them fools! Now then, let's us get going." She gave a gentle nod towards her before walking towards the exit of the camp. She stopped before she left and turned to wait for Squirrelpaw. Tinytail was determined to make her a fine warrior, when she was done with her, her name would send shivers down the spines of cats. Amber eyes went wide in shock as she listened to her new Mentor talk about the things she would be teaching her. It...she...that wasn't what she wanted at all! She dug her paws into the ground beneath her and didn't move even after Tinytail moved off towards the camp's exit. She had to set this she-cat straight right here and now. She wasn't going to let her Mentor decide the sort of cat she was going to become! "Star Clan above Tinytail, do you really think turning me into the sort of Warrior you think I should be will make you a great Mentor? I don't want to be feared by the other clans, I want to defend mine from those that seek to harm it. If you were looking for a fierce apprentice go talk to my sister because that's not who I am! And I refuse to let you turn me into what you think I should be! I'm not...I'm not like that. I want to be a great Warrior, but I want to be a Warrior that is true to the Code and not the hatred my Mentor has of other clans. I refuse, I won't. I'd rather stay an Apprentice forever, so if that's what you're wanting then count me out!"
Her words were passionate, unusually so for the normally shy she-cat, but she was determined. She was not Cardinalpaw! Her paws were set in a strong stance, her fluffy tail held upright instead of dragging the ground as it did when she was feeling shy, this was the stance of one who would one day be a Warrior. Squirrelpaw had never lacked for heart; what she was missing was self-confidence and a feeling of self-worth. She thought she wasn't considered good enough because she wasn't so bold and fierce as her sister Cardinalpaw. And now, hearing it again from her Mentor, she had finally had enough. She had spoken out. A Mentor was supposed to teach her how to be Squirrelpaw the Warrior the way it felt Star Clan wanted her to be, not Squirrelpaw the Warrior enemy of all not-clan and the ideal image of a Warrior for Tinytail. She couldn't take that, not from anyone else.
She took a step forwards towards her Mentor, then another; her tail lashing out angrily behind her. She might be shy, but she knew herself well enough to know that letting someone else decide who she'd become wasn't something she wanted like ever. Had it been too much for her to think her Mentor of all cats would be the first to actually ask what she wanted? Or why exactly she wanted to become a Warrior in the first place? Or anything really about her? Despite her clear sense of distress over this entire thing, her words were actually still very quiet and clear. She wasn't angry, exactly, more like disappointed.
"Tinytail, I'm happy you're excited to train me, and I'm honored to have a great Warrior chosen to be my Mentor. Just please...don't try and make me into something I'm not. I don't think the same way you do. If that disappoints you then I'm sorry. If you'd rather have an Apprentice that's more outgoing and aggressive and fierce, I won't fault you, but I'm going to stay true to what I believe in. Star Clan didn't make me like my sister, they didn't put my soul into this plain for me to be exactly like Cardinalpaw. I don't know what they want for me just yet, but it's not that. I'm not Cardinalpaw, I'm Squirrelpaw. I'm shy and I hide behind my tail sometimes. I'm clumsy and I like to swim and catch fish and I'm proud to say I'm quiet on my feet. That's who I am, isn't that enough for you? Can't it be enough? Please...."
She wanted...she wanted someone to just let her be herself and not expect her to be like Cardinalpaw. She wasn't her sister, couldn't anyone understand that? She wanted to learn to defend, not mindlessly murder other cats because they happened to belong to another clan from her own. That....just...why did no one seem to understand that? What was so wrong with wanting to be a shield for the clan and not fangs and claws alone?

Tinytail stared at Squirrelpaw in shock for a moment, unsure what to say or do. She hadn't expected such a response from her apprentice. After a moment of silence she gave a slow nod. She wanted to get along with her apprentice, she wanted to be a good mentor but at the moment it wasn't going well.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you. To me, all the clans are enemies, they aren't to be trusted, but you don't know that, do you? You have no reason to hate or not to trust other clans, and neither do I, however, it is what my mother taught me, and it is what my mentor taught me. I thought you too would have the same hatred for the clans as I do. Although I am not disappointed, nor am I angry. Every cat is different, I shouldn't of assumed. Now, we will still be doing border control, it is important for you to know where all the borders are. It will also allow you to learn where everything is. Are you ready to leave?
She gave a small smile, not saying anything more. She still didn't trust the clans and that was why she wanted to do border control.

Squirrelpaw took a deep, calming breath as she eyed her mentor's expression of shocked surprised. She did hate to raise her voice, but it had needed to be done. She was tired of being compared to her sister, and of everyone assuming she wanted to be a certain way. It seemed she had gotten through to her mentor for the moment, so she'd take the small victory for what it was. Rolling her shoulders, she approached her mentor again as the other she-cat amended her statement and apologized. "I am sorry for raising my voice, I just couldn't bare to hear those words from yet another cat. I understand why you must hate the other clans, and that's fine so long as you now know I don't feel the same way. I know they can hurt us and I'll fight them when the time comes without hesitation, I just won't blindly hate them."
She moved to walk with her mentor now that she wasn't behaving in such a manner as before. Her friendly nature, shy though she was, meant that she wouldn't leave the conversation on such a dour note. "Now then, I'm excited to go to the borders. I've hunted in the territory, of course, but never so far out." She let a small note of excitement seep into her tones and hoped it was enough to shift the mood for the better. She wanted to get along with her mentor, after all. Even if she had snapped at her, at least it put them on the same page and evened things out between them. Now though, she wanted to start again and this was the best way to do so.

Tinytail nodded to Squirrelpaw with a soft smile then looked towards the exit. She didn't mind that Squirrelpaw had shouted at her, she made a mistake, and she admitted that. She walked out the camp slowly, and as she did, she spoke softly to Squirrelpaw.
"It's no problem. I made a mistake, don't worry about it. Now, the first place we will visit is the Ambush Pond, that's where you'll get your water."
She smiled, and continued towards Ambush Pond, she thought it would be a good idea to show her where the most important areas were. Her tail swished softly as she continued to lead, every so often, she'd look back to make sure Squirrelpaw was following close behind. She didn't want to leave her behind. While Tinytail led, she would sniff up every so often to see if she could pick up any signs of prey. She would need to teach Squirrelpaw how to hunt soon, but first, she wanted to show her the area.

Squirrelpaw nodded at her Mentor's words before following after her on silent paws. Having grown up in this territory, she did know some of the areas closer to the camp but the further out areas would be new to her. She understood it would be good to know the borders, and she was excited to get started. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all with Tinytail as her Mentor. At least the she-cat had understood why she'd upset her new Apprentice and had apologized for it, that was a good sign to Squirrelpaw that she might just be seen as an individual instead of just the sister of Cardinalpaw.
She paused for a moment, hiding behind her tail for a moment, before she moved herself forwards once more to follow in step behind her Mentor. She needed to learn so much so that she could become a good Warrior for the clan. She might not ever be the strongest or most well-known, but that was alright because she'd be able to help protect the clan still with what she was learning. She didn't have to be big and bad like her sister to know she wanted to protect others. So she'd learn everything she could from Tinytail and hope for the best.

Tinytail continued to Ambush Pool with Squirrelpaw. It didn't take long to get there. She placed her tail in front of Squirrelpaw telling her to stop before stepping forward slightly.
"This is Ambush Pool. Those strange plants grow on the water, and that tricks cats into thinking it is solid ground. Make sure you be careful when you are around here."
She leaned in and took a small drink before lifting her head and looking over to Squirrel paw. Now that she knew it wasn't solid ground, she was confident that Squirrelpaw wouldn't try and step on it. She didn't think she would anyway, she wasn't a stupid cat but with her never being here it was certainly possible. Tinytail sat down, waiting for Squirrel to look around the area, ask any questions she may have and then get ready to continue onward. It also allowed them both to rest a little while Squirrel looked around.

Squirrelpaw stopped moving when Tinytail did, sniffing delicately at the water and the plant-life that covered it carefully as she took note of what was being said to her. So the ambush pond held it's own dangers to the unwary, that was good to know. Slowly and carefully of her footing, Squirrelpaw circled the area to get a better feel for it before returning to her Mentor's side. Her tail flicked out in front of her face again as it often did when she was feeling shy, but she held her place at Tinytail's side and spoke softly to the older she-cat. "So then, do cats do any fishing from this place? It looks like a good place to do so; especially for those of us that are strong swimmers."
She felt like maybe this would be a good place to fish from, and if it was then she could do her part for the clan as well since she was an excellent swimmer in her own right. Maybe something to show everyone that she didn't have to be like her sister to still be considered useful, that would be good. In the meantime though, it was time to move on and she was ready to do so. "I'm ready to move on whenever you are Tinytail."

Tinytail smiled at Squirrelpaw and gave a simple nod. before looking to the water. Yes, it was a good place to fish. She had come here every so often herself to catch fish from time to time. She had to admit, it was nicer than she thought it would be. She looked back to Squirrelpaw with another smile.
"Yes, I have fished here before. If you would like, we can catch some fish before we head back to camp. We will go to Branch Trail next, it is a good place for hunting birds."
She nodded to her before walking forwards. She was going to enjoy this, spending time with her apprentice and teaching her everything she knew. There was no doubt Nightclan would fall, Squirrelpaw may not be like her sister, but her fighting skills would be so great, that if any cat dared to invade that they would soon be running with their tails in between their legs. A smile came to her maw as she thought about that while she continued to lead on towards the Branch Trail.

Squirrelpaw got the distinct feeling as she watched her Mentor that she'd missed something important in this conversation. She wondered still just how much her Mentor actually saw her and not whatever image she held of the Warrior Squirrelpaw may become. She worried they would argue a lot over the fact that she didn't want to be overly violent, but now that she'd stood up for herself once, it wouldn't be so hard to do so again should the need arise; or at least that was what she hoped would be true. As a general rule, Squirrelpaw didn't like violence, but she did understand the need to defend those that needed her. She understood violence for self-defense and to protect the clan, but sometimes she didn't understand the need for violence against other clans simply because they were from other clans.
It grated on her sense of self, and she pulled her tail forward to hide behind once more in hopes that her troubled thoughts wouldn't show through in her expression. Instead she merely hid behind her tail and nodded to her Mentor. "I'm not hungry and the prey pile is already full so we don't need to fish, I was just curious if it was a good place to do so. So umm....right Branch Trail is next then? Night Clan certain has a large bit of territory, don't we?" She tried to interject pride for her clan into her words as her Mentor probably expected from her, but to her own ears the words sounded more like a fact than actual praise for her clan. This was so awkward and Squirrelpaw would be very relieved indeed when this part of her training was well and over with.

Tinytail continued to lead Squirrelpaw towards the branch trail. She noticed her hide her face with her tail but said nothing of it. Every cat was different, she had to remember that. She continued onwards until she reached the branch trail, once she was there she looked around with a smile. This place was nice, she liked it here, she had to admit. There wasn't much honey at the moment, but soon there would be, and she loved the taste of honey. It was worth getting a sore throat just once to try it. "This is the branch trail, you'll collect moss here for bedding. There is also a lot of birds here, so it can be a good place for hunting. Lastly, this is where I will train you to climb and ambush when the time comes. If you walk over that way.." She pointed her tail towards the black woods before speaking again. "You'll end up in the black woods, but there isn't much prey there. Medicine cats often go there to collect herbs." She smiled, and sat down as she waited for Squirrelpaw to take everything in and get ready to move on again. Silver

Squirrelpaw moved at Tinytail's side, continuing to quietly take things in as was her way. The sights and scents of this place were interesting and she felt like by the time her Mentor began to teach her to properly stalk prey she wouldn't feel so shy around her anymore. That was the hope at least. Deciding to try talking to her Mentor a bit more, she shyly offered a topic of conversation that might appeal to Tinytail a bit more. "I look forward to that. Actually though...maybe it doesn't count, but I've caught a frog in the grass before. So hopefully I'll be good at hunting other prey when the time comes." Her words spent she fell back into silence before turning her gaze towards the woods indicated. Medicine Cats gathered herbs there, that was interesting to know.
She moved closer to Tinytail and inclined her head respectfully to show she was ready to continue their journey. She was really learning a lot already so maybe this time as Tinytail's Apprentice wouldn't be so terrible after all. As they continued on her way, she kept making herself try to be friendly with her Mentor, she could do it, it was just hard for her. "Y-you know...I used to collect the feathers that Apprentices would catch when I was younger. I'd ask them to bring them to me sometimes and decorate my mother's nest with them."
It was a look into the sort of cat she was and it made Squirrelpaw happy to be able to speak to her Mentor in such a way. Maybe they would even be friends some day soon.

Tinytail listened to Squirrelpaw and gave a soft nod. Her little story was interesting, and she was looking forward to see what she could do herself. Once they were ready to move on, she set forth towards the Muddy Pools, while she did, she gave a s soft smile and began to speak. "We're off to the Muddy Pools now, but I do look forward to watching you catch prey. If you caught prey before, then catching another should be no problem for you. Feathers are nice though, they are very beautiful to look at. Talking about nests and Queens, one day I want to be a Queen. Redcloud is my mate, and we're looking for a male to help us." She spoke proudly as she led the way towards the Muddy Pools. She had a few ideas as to who the male could be now, but she still wasn't completely sure. She was going to have to talk to Redcloud about it, and get her opinion on the matter. Silver
