The golden tabby of a tom paced just outside the warrior's den. He had been up for the past few minutes after sunset in somewhat of a nervous state. He had recently talked with his father about the moment he knew that he loved his mother. Weaselbite explained that it wasn't like being hit with lighting but instead like being warmed by the sun. It started off slow and built over time until the warmth of it all was perfect. Valiantstride had started to feel that way about Skunkspots. Being around her made him warm and his heart skipped too many beats, but it was good right?
Thoughts of her started to cross his mind more frequently and Valiantstride had decided it was the right time to talk to her about it. He wanted her to feel the same, it didn't have to be love right now, but he wanted there to be a hope, a promise for something to grow. But! he would remain a gentleman, if Skunkspots didn't share those feelings then he'd have to figure out how to move on, even if he hated being in the cold.
So that was the reason for his pacing outside the warrior den. He wanted to catch Skunkspots going in or coming out, but the more he waited the more he was starting to realize that she was likely inside the den already. Somewhat defeated Valiantstride took his lapse in judgement as a way to practice what he wanted to say.
"Skunkspots, I want you to know that you are my sun,"
(Wow, wasn't that cheesy) Valianstride shook his head once he realized how stupid that sounded. She'd likely think he was mouse brain because her fur didn't look like that. She was black and white with similarities to the sun at all expect for her beautiful eyes. Those were like two tiny sun. Instead of finding courage in his thoughts, Valiantstride found courage in Hawkfall exiting the warrior's den.
"Is Skunkspots in there?" He asked the larger brown tabby, he simply shook his head no before passing Valiantstride to head out of the camp. Valianstride felt defeated and lowered himself to sit, looking down until his ears rotated to the sound of a returning patrol. Skunkspots was among them and quickly Valiantstride perked up enough to rise back to his paws and close the distances between them.
"Um, Skunkspots if you aren't too tired would you like to go with me for a walk? I wanted to tell you something," He told her, keeping his voice low so no one overheard them.

Her heart flopped around like a landed fish. Hardly the nicest of descriptions, but that's how she felt. Awkward and gasping for air as the sudden appearance of Valiantstride put her in a head-spin. It took her a few blankly-staring seconds to realize he seemed nervous. Great, he's finally realized how lame you are... Said that snarky inner critic of hers, but Skunkspots furiously tried to brush that thought aside.
She... She wasn't so lame, any more. Still not good company, but still not as bad as she'd previously thought.
"I wanted to tell you something."
The black and white she-cat almost leaned away from him, suddenly afraid of what he had to say, but curiosity burned in her breast, and she nodded. "Yeah, I'm not tired. We can go..." She gestured vaguely around them with her tail, forgetting the names of the parts of StoneClan's territory. He made it so hard for her to concentrate sometimes; he sounded nervous, anxious even, but when he'd leaned in and spoke to her, she'd felt tempted to lean in too. Stop that. What if you have mouse breath from this morning? This time she acknowledged her inner critic had a point, and stood still, waiting for him to decide the direction they would go in.
As she waited, her thoughts went off in all directions, negative guesses all tumbling down like rocks, one after the other. He's going to tell you he's leaving StoneClan. He really likes toms. He doesn't want you to get the wrong impression and just wants to be friends. He's already got a secret mate. He was just teasing you, pretending to be your friend. This is all just a bad joke.
If Skunkspots could cover her ears and block out those thoughts, she would've. Instead, she looked intently at Valiantstride, counting the markings on his face just as a distraction tool, almost unaware she was doing it. One... Two... Oddly enough, it was helping her calm down.

A tiny smile crossed his muzzle as she agreed to go with him. He didn't know where to go but he knew he wanted to take he somewhere special. Racking his brain for a half-decent place, he settled on the sky spring not far away.
As his attention return to Skunkspots he noticed that she seemed to be staring at him. That provoked a short chuckle from him.
"Do I have something on my face?" He asked, running a paw over himself to hopefully wipe away anything left over of prey or dirt. Once he felt clean, Valiantstride was careful to brush past her as he took the lead. Glancing back for a moment he waited to see her take a step to follow before he heading off.
The trip from the camp to the Sky Springs was short and as the last bit of sunlight started to fade away, it was quickly coming a quiet night. However, his heart was anything but quiet. It hammered in his chest and he was nervous to look back at Skunkspots in fear she could tell what he was thinking. It wasn't until his nose scented the change in air, the springs often smelled like fresh after and herbs.
He paused before turning to look back at Skunkspots with his head dipped down and his ears tucked back.
"I don't know how to say this, but it needs to be said," He started off, his voice sounding oddly soft. Perhaps it was the nerves that forced his voice to fade.
"I've been feeling this way for awhile and I just have to tell you, other wise I'll hate myself," He went on to saying, realizing that it sounded awfully vague but he wasn't sure how to say it just yet.
'Rip it out like a thorn,' He told himself finally looking up to met Skunkspots' eyes.
"I really like you...I mean really really like you." He muttered barely able to rise his voice above a whisper. He figured that if she didn't like what she heard he could just say she misunderstood him. Awkwardly he turned his eyes away and let them fall to their paws as he stood in front of her.

"Do I have something on my face?"
No! Just your face, which is nice. It's a good face. I was just staring because... Skunkspots' thoughts trailed off to nowhere, and she concentrated mainly on putting one paw in front of the other as Valiantstride led her in the direction of--she sniffed the air as they walked--the Sky Springs. The glow of evening was upon them, and she found herself appreciating the warm reddish-orange light on Valiantstride's pelt from the sinking sun. She probably looked like a tomato, but he wasn't looking at her so she didn't care.
Maybe it was the presence of medical herbs nearby, but Skunkspots, miraculously, did not implode from nerves when they reached their destination. She still felt like a frog that had been left out in the sun too long, about to burst at any moment into a huge, disgusting mess, but she couldn't look away. It was like watching a tree fall on a family of rabbits; Skunkspots felt helpless to stop whatever was coming next, but she owed to the victims--possibly herself, in this case--to at least witness what was happening to them.
She felt like her heart was sticking to the back of her throat, because there was definitely a lump that made it hard to speak. Just get it out, you furball! Her inner voice agonized, the black she-cat's pelt fluffing out as her alarm mounted.
"I've been feeling this way for awhile and I just have to tell you, other wise I'll hate myself,"
Great StarClan here it comes. Just kill me quickly. I'd like to be buried under a tree, so buzzards and vultures can't pick me to pieces. Skunkspots squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for impact. The build up he was causing implied that her whole world was about to shatter, or that she was going to fall into a thorn bush so riddled with prickly points that it would take a moon to find all the scratches.
Here whole world did shatter. But she didn't land in thorns, she'd landed in... the clouds? Soft cool clouds that defied her expectations and did not care that she had repeatedly told herself it wasn't possible.
Skunkspots' jaw fell open. "Huh? You really really like me?" She then glanced around behind him, as if expecting their peers to jump out and yell Got you, Skunkspots, you're so stupid you fell for that! But her senses did not lie. They were alone at the sky springs. At evening. There was a sliver of a moon above them, and Valiantstride had just confessed his feelings for her. She tried to say something reassuring, but her words crashed into each other. "hhrgm." Try again, try again. Dear StarClan try again!
With a feeling as if her whole body had turned to water, Skunkspots stammered back at him. "Y-You have bad taste in she-cats," which was accompanied by a laugh so awkward, StarClan probably winced. "I... I like you too. Don't laugh at me, but I do. For a while. And is it hot here? I think it's hot here. I'm burning up. You're probably fine. You're always fine. Er, I mean you're normal, but if you want to take it the other way then you can, you've probably seen your reflection."
Ears burning so badly she was afraid they'd caught fire, Skunkspots quickly turned away from him, groaning in horror at her own babbling. "Sorry. Sorry. I'm gonna go stick my head in the sky springs now."

Her first reaction calmed his nerve. It was better for her to be surprised instead of disgusted. He could deal with a mild bit of confusion but if she had been revolted by his words he might have just turned and left StoneClan that night. She tried to say something again but all that came out was an odd little noise. A jumbling of words perhaps but Valinstride found it cute, the urge to lick her cheek was overwhelming but he kept himself in check. The words to follow her mishap threatened to break his heart. Did she think so little of herself? For a brief moment concern crossed over his face as he tried to smile as she laughed. He made it his mission to help her see that she was the she-cat for him, but he knew it would take time. Hearing her say she liked him had his ears perking up and all over words zoned out. He didn't hear her mention anything about his looks as his face turned into a wide smile and a deep purr rumbled from his chest! She liked him back! All fears washed away like a welcomed rain. Knowing that she liked him back made him even more confident about what his dad had told him. His happiness was only dampened as she mentioned sticking her head in the water. Confusion crossed over his face for a brief moment until he realize she was embarrassed. He felt only a little guilty he hadn't been listening very well. "Um..don't do that," He purred, moving to stand beside her, pressing his shoulder into her shoulder. "Its cute when you ramble," He added, looking at her with a smile before dropping his gaze. His own cheeks flushing with embarrassment.

Skunkspots felt his touch like a jolt of electricity, and she made an odd sound in her throat that even surprised herself. It took an astonished couple of seconds for Skunkspots to realize she was purring. Sheepish and embarrassed, the black and white warrioress cleared her throat to disrupt the unusual sound, and gave him another awkward smile. "Are you... are you really sure about this, Valiantstride? It's not too late to back out now." We're not mates, but... but we both feel something for one another. So what did that mean? Did they... spend all their time together for a while? Did he have to ask her officially to be his mate? Did she have to ask him?
None of her friends one half of a matching pair; Skunkspots had no idea what the proper order was for any of this. She'd love to play it by ear, and just having a tom she liked actively return her feelings was already so overwhelmingly nice, so much more than she'd ever expected, that it was making her head spin. "I'm not very good at this," she confessed, heart in her throat. "But... if you don't mind my mistakes and my awkwardness and my..." inability to flirt. Skunkspots swallowed nervously. "Then I'd like to keep spending time with you."
How weird. StarClan, how weird was it that she of all cats suddenly had a tom padding after her that didn't mind how much of a social slug she was? How she just oozed awkwardness and didn't say the right things and barely made it through the day without her classic bout of cynicism and self-depreciation. Yet here they were. He grinned at her as if she'd just told him they got to skip leafbare, and her heart tumbled tail over ears at the sight of it. Red went unseen beneath a white and black pelt, but she smiled back.
Can I... can I try something? Before that inner skeptic could chime in with more unwanted snark, Skunkspots leaned in and lightly touched her nose to his, so close that her whiskers brushed against Valiantstride's. Darting back as if stung, she shuffled on her feet, hoping he wouldn't react negatively. It was how she greeted the cats that mattered to her. Well, not Ospreywing anymore... They'd gotten so distant, it didn't make sense. But Fallenleaf, Maplepaw and now Valiantstride, were the special ones in her life, and she wanted him to know that she didn't want to let him go.
Not so soon.

Valiantstride found the purr coming from Skunkspots to be beautiful and frowned when she cleared her throat. Her words hung heavy in the air for him. Valianstride was starting to fear the Skunkspots didn't want him to like her. That she thought of herself so small and unimportant and unworthy? Those thoughts clouded him, keeping him silent. Instead pressed into her side a bit more, letting her know that he was there for as long as she'd let him stay. He found her continued rambling to be silly but in the cute sort of way. To him Skunkspots was perfect, her quirks made her special. "I don't mind at all, everyone makes mistakes," He told her, attempting to be comforting. His cheeks warmed as she told him that she did in fact enjoy spending time with him. His heart quickened for a moment, his tail flicking back and forth. Regardless of where it ended, Valinastride was glad to have shared this moment with Skunkspots. It was too early to say love, but for the first time in his life he someone in life he wanted to create more memories like this one. Build something together rather it end up being a strong friendship or a romantic relationship. However he wished for the later as Skunkspots touched her nose to his, sending sparks through his spine. Valiantstride purred louder and it only stopped as she darted back, leaving him there with a soft smile. Flicking his tail he glanced upward to the sky where the stars were starting to peak out before focusing back on Skunspots. "We should head home," He meowed toward her pressing his chin to her forehead for a second, then taking a step toward camp, waiting for her to follow. Fawn end?
