Larkfeather trailed behind the small patrol, made up of only herself, Shadewhisker, and her brother Harebrain-oh wait, Harestrike, sorry. They were supposed to be checking the TreeClan border and renewing the scentmarks, and since everything had been quiet lately with TreeClan, three cats were apparently all that was required to do the task. She was thankful at least that the third member of their patrol was in no way related to her. Shadewhisker was a pretty quiet cat, so it wasn't hard just to ignore her. However, she was also the leader of the patrol, as the only senior warrior in the group.

She glared at her brother's fluffy tail ahead of her, wondering why Redscar had made her patrol with him of all cats. She relented that he was better than Morningfrost, but not by a lot. Her tail whisked behind her as she gave a dissatisfied huff, causing Shadewhisker to glance back at her curiously. She turned away from the black and white she-cat, not wanting to get into a discussion with her, and silently cursed herself for making any noise at all to draw either of their attentions to her. If she could just make it through this stupid patrol, she could go back to avoiding Harestrike like greencough and everything would be just fine.

Shadewhisker paused to tell them she was going to go ahead and remark the scentline and would catch up with them at the next marker, apparently trying to be nice and give the siblings a short chance to converse on their own. Larkfeather's fur fluffed up as she shot a glare at the tuxedo she-cat's disappearing form. Thanks a lot! She hurried ahead, not even looking at Harestrike as she passed him, intent on just keeping on with the patrol and letting Shadewhisker catch up to them whenever and wherever, but she certainly wasn't going to sit around and wait at the next scent marker. For all she cared, Shadewhisker could catch up with them back at camp!

19 MOONS LIGHTNINGCLAN WARRIOR

There were a lot of things to resent about this stupid patrol. For one, he was here with his sister, Larkfeather, who did a great job at never amounting to anything more than a pretty distraction for all of his friends. Secondly, they were patrolling the TreeClan border; Harestrike rolled his eyes when he'd heard Redscar call his name and direct him to this measly patrol of three cats. That wasn't a fighting patrol. That wasn't the kind of patrol that said 'we've won, StoneClan, what's yours is OURS'; this was a patrol that said 'hey, wouldn't it be hilarious to put three cats who don't like each other on a border patrol together?'

Harestrike scoffed, calling sarcastically after Shadewhisker; "Take your time, I love spending the morning with my favorite littermate."

Yeah, this patrol felt like a joke. It wasn't funny.

Larkfeather went ahead, and he felt a competitive streak stir, watching the she-cat move in front of him as if she were trying to beat him to the border. Harestrike quickened his pace, easily overtaking her on the way to the open woods that marked the territory change between Tree and Lightning.

She's so annoying. A mean-spirited thought popped up just then, and he wisely kept it to himself. He would've bet six rabbits that if Morningfrost had been able to stop her kitting after Thrushwhisker, she would've. Two out of three is not a total victory. Two out of two is so much better.

With little ceremony, Harestrike renewed the border marking, his irritation over being unable to patrol the Sun Stones slow to dissolve, however. Why hadn't Firestar taken something useful, anyway? Not that StoneClan had much territory worth taking. Still, leafbare was coming, so they could use all the land they could sink their claws into. He almost brought up this point with Larkfeather, but quickly thought better of it. She didn't give a rat's tail about anything other than how many toms she could get to line her nest at night.

Her ears twitched back against her skull as Harestrike called back to Shadewhisker. His tone made it rather clear that his words were not at all to be taken seriously, but Shadewhisker gave no indication of noticing and simply kept walking, the only indication that she had heard being an ear twisting back in recognition that she had been spoken to. If she didn't understand that Harestrike meant the complete opposite of his words than she was as harebrained as he was.

Then Harestrike was bounding past her, causing her to simply stop and glare after him. Stupid! “Not everything is a competition, Harebrain!” she snarled after him, racing onward as he stopped to renew the marker. But if he wanted to make it one then fine! As she ran past him she yowled back, “You should just mark all the borders yourself, your STENCH would keep every cat away, Skunkstrike!” She put on a burst of speed after that, hightailing it out of there. She couldn't believe Shadewhisker had left her alone with him! What was she thinking?

She wondered how long she might be able to outrun him. His legs were far longer than hers, and both her brothers had more of the traditional LightningClan build, made for running at high speeds, whereas her own build leaned more toward... average compared to most LightningClan cats, just like most everything else about her. Her coat was truly the only unique thing about her, she had nothing else. She fought the sudden urge to stop and groom. It had become as much a coping habit as it was hygienic. Grooming soothed her, assured her she was still beautiful, still had the one thing she could be proud of.

But she wanted to avoid further contact with Harestrike for as long as possible, and if she wanted to do that then she had to run like the wind. It wasn't long before she began to tire, however. She began to slow, puffing and panting, her lazy way of life catching up to her faster than her brother was. Ugh, this was the worst day she had had in a long time. Stupid Shadewhisker. Why couldn't they just finish the patrol together instead of her splitting off like that? What if they were attacked by TreeClan or something? How irresponsible, splitting up when their patrol was already so small! She cursed herself, wishing she had thought to bring that up BEFORE Shadewhisker had gone.

“Not everything is a competition, Harebrain!”

"Easy for you to say, Larkfail!" He called back, sneering as he put on a burst of speed. Harestrike was aptly named; not just for is fighter's nature because he was fast. He'd lost control a few times and hurtled into some sedge bushes in the past, but Harestrike's perfectionist nature had forced him to practice and practice and practice until he could accelerate and slow down without embarrassing himself. Harestrike felt the wind stream through his fur, his legs churning powerfully beneath him as he blew past Larkfeather. He slowed down enough to shout back after her. "You wouldn't know what winning felt like!"

His sister was a huffing, wheezing furball somewhere in the grass behind him, and he dispassionately wondered if she'd just turn around and go home, or throw a tantrum if he ignored her long enough. Reaching the border with TreeClan, he panted freely, always marveling at how still the world felt and looked whenever he slowed down out of a full-blown sprint. He hadn't needed to push himself to overtake Larkfeather's scurrying, so he didn't; he had pushed himself to a full-blown sprint simply because he wanted to.

Harestrike brushed the treeline with his tabby-and-white pelt, snorting as he thought of Larkfeather's petty insult for him. Skunkstrike. And Harebrain wasn't even one she'd made up herself... She's so pathetic. Did he really mean that, though? A part of him wanted to pity her, because out of all the members of his family, she felt like the one that didn't belong. Not even once had Harestrike put himself in his sister's paw steps. He wasn't about to start now. Considering laying off on the torment, a dragonfly whizzed by, translucent wings a sparkling blur as it caught the sunlight, and his split second's compassion took off after it.

Nah. Larkfeather's feelings didn't impact him any. Why should he care? The only thing that linked them was their parents, for all he knew, she was a stranger to him. A stranger he didn't even like.

Thrushwhisker

Thrushwhisker was enjoying a lovely day out in the territory tracking rabbits.  Well enjoying it for the most part, since he hadn't gotten any cat to come with him, and hunting was never as fun alone. As he loped across the expanse of golden grasses close to the Treeclan border and the stand of open trees, he caught scent of rabbit, and immediately dropped down. Maneuvering around so that he was downwind of the rabbit, he approached, using his scent, his ears, and his paws to triangulate the rabbits position. He moved with surprising slowness compared to his earlier running. Before he could start a chase, he had to get close enough that the rabbit wouldn't just outrun him to a nearby burrow.

Just as he was about to leap to the chase, some idiots started yowling near the border. The rabbit bolted, and Thrushwhisker lost his chance. Annoyed, he stood straight up. Really? Who the heck starts yowling around the territory during prime hunting time? Oh could it be a scuffle between patrols. Ears pricked,Thrushwhisker decided to go check it out.

He didn't get far however, before he saw a familiar white pelt. Typical, his siter was involved. With a heavy sigh he picked up his pace, and caught up just as his brother appeared. Well at least he was here, so hopefully something was getting done.

"Larkfeather! Your loud mouth scared away my prey! Hope you're happy going hungry today." He turned his attention to his Harestrike. "What nonsense is she up to? And how did you come to be involved? I would think you would be anywhere but with her." He said flicking his ears at his sister.

While he had little to do with sister, he didnt exactly hate her like Harestrike did. He more just pitied her. While Morningfrost really shouldn't have neglected her, Larkfeather had made everything worse for herself by constantly moping and then by becoming the most useless apprentice and warrior in the clan. Any empathy had been replaced by pity and disdain.
