We're gonna play in the dark till it's golden again.
It was clear to see from the moment she awoke that day, her face said it all and betrayed another night of restlessness. To say it was uncommon for Batpaw to go without sleep would be a lie, one so blatant and obvious that any cat in Lightningclan could have told you so. Today though, it seemed far worse than usual.
Her yellow eyes were bleary and tired, her legs seemed to tremble beneath her own weight. Her ears and tail drooped, as though she hardly had the energy to lift them up anymore, while her head was locked into a constant routine of looking around and giving a good shake to help her stay awake.
Every inch of her body cried out for rest, her own heart seeming to ache in protest as she pushed herself forward, padding over towards Cloudypaw and lightly prodding her side with her paw. There was no way she would give in to her body's demands, she had work to do today and she would most assuredly get it done. She would simply have to wait for her companion to awaken before they could set off. After all, she did want to go hunting with her new friend, and she wasn't about to let a silly little thing like exhaustion stop her.

A gentle paw prodded Cloudypaw into consciousness. Lifting a drowsy face to the cat responsible, Cloudypaw blinked away some of the sleepiness to smile, rubbing her face with a dainty white paw as if to actively rub away the urge to sleep. "Hi Batpaw," she whispered, her voice not yet to a reasonable volume without a fresh drink of water or even a bit of morning dew.
Maybe it was her foggy brain, but Cloudypaw could've sworn Batpaw looked a little... tired. I'll bet she and Brightpool are very busy with training. Nightstep, to her immense surprise, thought it was a good idea to train at night... Cloudypaw wasn't too certain of that, but she was trying her best.
Batpaw had mentioned something about tunnels the last time they'd spoken. Maybe that's where she'd been?
Cloudypaw took a few minutes to stretch and groom her pelt a little, shaking out her brown tabby and white fur, blue eyes crystal clear on such a bright morning. Her pupils narrowed when they left the apprentices' den, and being out in the fresh, clean air helped keep her alert, but didn't encourage her to raise her voice much higher than its usual whisper. "Should we tell Redscar where we're going?" Or at least one of their mentors.

We're gonna play in the dark till it's golden again.
Opening her jaws wide in a yawn, the dark she-cat looked away from her companion for only a brief second. When she looked back to her however, her heart fluttered softly as she set her eyes upon Cloudypaw's smiling face. She found it quite strange, considering not a moment ago, the organ seemed to ache. Now it was fluttering? Perhaps she should talk to Rookfrost about it later, maybe he could figure out a way to fix her confused heart.
"Good morning Cloudypaw," Batpaw smiled back at her, dipping her head in greeting. "Did you sleep well last night?" She asked. Briefly, she pondered the hilarity of her caring about whether another apprentice got some sleep but not herself. If any other cat, apprentice or not, had not gotten enough sleep the night before, she would implore them to head back to bed. Yet here she was, ready and willing to tackle the world after having little sleep over the span of several days.
'That's different though!' She thought to herself. 'The other cats don't have the same kind of energy that I do, they need the rest more than me. Besides, I've done this kind of thing so many times by now that I'm used to it, I'll be just fine.'
Once her friend had finished grooming herself, she silently stepped out of the apprentice den. Her ears twitched slightly as she heard Cloudypaw speak from behind her. "Yes, I think it would be a good idea to tell Redscar, or maybe our mentors. We wouldn't want them getting worried about us, and we'd want someone to know where we're at if something happens." She nodded.

"Okay," Cloudypaw nodded softly, stretching in the sunlight until she felt a soft pop in each of her shoulders and back legs. Feeling better, she shook out her fur, casting a wide glance around LightningClan's camp in search of Nightstep's familiar tuxedo pelt. With a jolt, the kitten remembered her previous lesson. I should scent him out, instead. With a curious step forward, Cloudypaw followed her nose to the warriors' den, peering cautiously inside as if she expected a scolding should any-cat catch her. It was much easier to speak to Nightstep than Redscar; and Batpaw's mentor Brightpool... She seemed somber, or distant. Almost sad.
It was as if no cat existed in camp that could possibly cheer her up. Maybe Cloudypaw was just imagining it, but she felt as if there was an invisible weight in Brightpool that kept her from being happy. But what did the absent musings of a kitten matter, in the grand scheme of things? Plucking up her courage, Cloudypaw's trembling whisper blew into the warrior's den like the tiniest breeze, easily ignored. "Nightstep?"
"He's not here," called back a disinterested, distinctly male voice.
Backing away hastily, she nearly bumped right into Batpaw and squeaked in surprise. "S-Sorry! I don't know where my me-mentor is, can you find yours? Or Redscar?" The tabby and white cat's paws kneaded the grassy earth with shyness. Redscar was... scary. She knew he was the deputy and he must be a perfectly nice cat, but he frightened her a little. Battles frightened her in general.

We're gonna play in the dark till it's golden again.
Batpaw stepped around Cloudypaw and peered into the warrior den, her yellow eyes scanning the darkness. She scented the air and found not a hint of her mentor. Quickly, she turned back to Cloudypaw and shook her head. "Nope, she's not there. I'm not exactly sure where Redscar would be either but we can look around for him." She stated before noticing her companion seemed to be kneading the grass.
"Are you alright Cloudypaw? You appear to be kneading the grass quite a bit there." She commented. Instinctively she moved to nuzzle her face against Cloudypaw's shoulder in attempt to comfort her. This was something her siblings would often do for her back when she was in the nursery and she had hoped that it would help Cloudypaw too. If not, there was a good chance she just made things worse by getting into her friends' personal space and touching her without asking first. 'Oh well, act first and ask questions later I suppose.' She thought to herself.

The kitten's face lit up in surprise, not realizing Batpaw had noticed how nervous she was. Responding to the soft nuzzle with a shy smile, Cloudypaw admitted to the cause. "Re-Redscar is... scary. All those scars..." It was hard for her to imagine how he had gotten them; a pacifist at heart, she was frightened by the prospect of one day seeing Sunnypaw or Niko or Galepaw with those kinds of old wounds on their pelts. They looked painful.
Her whiskers drooped, suddenly worried over whether or not they had made the right choice to stay... Being a loner sounded hard, but so did being a Clan-cat. Especially when you were required by the Code to protect your Clan and your territory sometimes with your life. Had she not fully understood what she was agreeing to, that day in the nursery? Admittedly, Cloudypaw just hadn't wanted to be separated from her new parents.
I-I should talk to Flashbrook or Burningleaf. They always know what to say. They were wise, older warriors. They could help put some of her fears to rest.
Shaking off the malaise of worry, Cloudypaw made the effort to smile at her friend. "I know who we can tell! I'll find Burningleaf." Briefly separating from Batpaw, the kitten's countenance lit up with warmth as she spotted one of her fathers returning with a pheasant in his jaws. "B-Batpaw and I are going to go hunting. Is that a-alright?" There was the faintest of purrs in her throat as Burningleaf licked the top of her head, told her to be careful, and watched as she quickly trotted back to Batpaw.
"Now we can go." She mewed, eager to be out of camp where there wouldn't be quite so many cats around.

Her whiskers twitched slightly, listening to her friend's worries. When her tabby companion stated that the deputy was scary, she gave a nod of her head. Yes, the older tom was most certainly frightening at first glance, covered in scars that told of many a great battle that he'd survived through. She could definitely see why her friend would be unnerved by him.
"Yeah, he looks pretty scary, but he's actually pretty nice. I've talked to him before, he and a few other warriors took me out for my first hunt a few moons back. So I don't think there's much of anything to be worried about." She mewled out softly.
She once again gave a nod of understanding, however, when Cloudypaw said that she would go talk to one of her fathers about them leaving. Sitting patiently, she for once managed to wait without getting up and pacing around, for her fellow apprentice to return.
Without much hesitation, the shadowy she-cat started padding in the direction of the star fields, eager to begin the hunt. As they pressed on and camp steadily got further away, the sudden ache in her chest returned with a vengeance. Her whole body suddenly seeming to feel as though it were all bogged down with water, desperate to hit the floor and fall unconscious then and there. Yet the black kitten continued on, moving rather sluggishly all of the sudden as she fought through the desire to collapse.

Cloudypaw seemed to perk up with the change in scenery, and there was a lightness to her steps that greatly contrasted Batpaw’s sluggish, heavy movements. Hearing Batpaw step none-too-gently upon a clump of sedge just beside her, Cloudypaw’s ears rotated, latching onto the sound. ”Are you tired, Batpaw?” She mewed softly, tilting her head in quiet appraisal. Remembering when she had first met the black kitten late at night, it occurred to Cloudypaw that her friend didn't really sleep much... That can't be very healthy?
Stepping closer, Cloudypaw moved shoulder to shoulder with Batpaw, letting her lean against her if she needed to. "We can hunt later, I don't mind waiting." Really looking at her now, Cloudypaw's blue eyes reflected concern as she noticed the fatigue that seemed to cling to Batpaw closer than her own pelt.
I hope she's not sick! Batpaw would tell her if she was, wouldn't she? The tabby and white she-cat had faith that her friend would be honest with her, especially when it came to things as important as health. But maybe Batpaw was afraid to be held back from becoming a warrior? Especially if Rookfrost thought she should take it easy with training for a while…

Stopping her movements and leaning her weight up against Cloudypaw's shoulder, the black kitten was only vaguely aware of the sound of her friend's voice. Try as she might to be able to hear it clearly, it seemed to be fuzzy and sounded as though it were getting farther away with each second. Luckily, she was able to make out what Cloudypaw was saying, to which she shook her head.
"I-I don't.....I can't....don't br- " Batpaw seemed to struggle to speak at this point and soon enough, her legs gave out, causing the apprentice to come crashing down on top of Cloudypaw. She tried to get up again, to apologize for her clumsiness, but the words she spoke were half-hearted and jumbled while her limbs refused to carry her weight anymore. Whining out helplessly, she could feel the consciousness beginning to slip from her and she had to fight to keep her eyes open, giving Cloudypaw one final frightened look before she finally blacked out, leaving the tabby and white kitten to her own devices.

Batpaw's panicked expression reflected in Cloudypaw's wide blue eyes, which had grown as large as full moons on Gathering nights. She squealed in alarm as the black kitten collapsed on top of her, whining as though in pain, exhaustion wrapped tighter around Batpaw than her own dark fur. "Batpaw!"
Shock rippled through the tabby and white kitten, tears springing to her eyes as she let panic overwhelm her. Wriggling out from under Batpaw, she tried unsuccessfully to nudge her awake, and got only a flutter of Batpaw's eyelids for her efforts.
Oh no oh no oh no! Batpaw please be okay! Heart clenching painfully tight, Cloudypaw's flanks heaved as her breath came in uneven gasps. "G-Get help! I should get help! I—I'll be right back! I'll get help!" She squeaked, voice shrill at her fallen friend.
With one last terrified glance at Batpaw, Cloudypaw raced back to camp, her heart pounding in her ears, her paws flying swiftly over the moorland like she had never run before. She could barely speak when she nearly crashed into Rookfrost, her fear for Batpaw outweighing her fear of Rookfrost by a long shot.
"Batpaw collapsed in the St-Star Field!" She gasped forcing the air into her lungs and back out again.
The jet black tom's eyes glittered coldly. "Show me." He reported, and immediately she spun around to lead him back to her fallen friend. Please don't be dead, please don't be dead. That Rookfrost had not gathered any herbs did not even occur to her.
She half-stumbled, half-ran back to Batpaw, kicking up blades of grass as she skidded to a rough stop in front of the still black-furred form. "H-Here!"
Rookfrost descended upon her like a shadow, checking Batpaw's vitals, his ear laid close to the kitten's mouth to listen to her breathing. He checked her flank next, and, putting a paw on her head, pulled back her eyelid with delicate precision. The tom grunted in disgust. "She's collapsed from exhaustion."
Cloudypaw was left to watched, faintly alarmed as Rookfrost abruptly walked away. "W-Where—!"
But then he returned, clutching a bulb of garlic by the long green stem. He shoved the pungent herb under Batpaw's nose. "Wake up." His voice was like an icy wind, cutting through the moorland.

We're gonna play in the dark till it's golden again.
The sudden darkness that had overcome Batpaw seemed to flee with the newfound presence of a pungent odor. Instead, her bleary eyes were once again graced with a view of the waking world, still as beautiful, if not a bit more blurry, as she remembered it.
She found her strength had returned to her, at least somewhat anyways. The dark apprentice had been able to shakily rise to her paws once more, looking from Cloudypaw to Rookfrost curiously. One look at the bulb of garlic the medicine cat was holding however and it seemed clear.
Ears pinned back in a mixture of embarrassment and frustration, the young cat dipped her head respectfully to the older tom. "Th-thank you for your help Rookfrost. Sorry that you had to come all the way out here." She mewled apologetically before turning her attention back to Cloudypaw.
The ever present look of concern on her friend's face brought a pang of guilt to the shadowy she-cat's heart. "Are you going to be okay Cloudypaw?" Admittedly the question was a little silly, granted that she was the one who had collapsed and not Cloudypaw, but it was the first thing she could think of asking her. She simply had to ensure that her friend wasn't too traumatized by the events that had just occurred. Otherwise she would never be able to forgive herself.

"Are you going to be okay Cloudypaw?"
"ME?" Cloudypaw squeaked, staring at her dear friend in disbelief. The white-and-tabby she-cat shook her head, giving Batpaw a nudge back towards camp. "I-I'm fine! You are going right back — right back to your nest!" There was a quaver in her voice, as if she were still recovering from the entire ordeal, but that quaver slipped away as a new firmness took over. "Don't argue with me," Cloudypaw mewed as sternly as she could muster, her tail laid over Batpaw's back in an effort to guide the exhausted she-cat back to the apprentices' den.
"Oh Batpaw you should have told me you weren't sleeping well! We can hunt any old time." Blue eyes as bright as the stars and brimming with emotion, Cloudypaw was still trying to get her heart to settle, and her legs shook like branches in a storm. When Batpaw had first gone unconscious, she'd wanted to curl up into a ball and cry from the stress, from the uncertainty, but the adrenaline had kicked in. It was still a surprise even to her, but Cloudypaw had had enough sense to fetch the right cat for the situation.
Batpaw wasn't the only one that needed a nap. Feeling giddy with fatigue, she stayed glued to Batpaw's side as they followed in Rookfrost's wake, the incredibly serious healer making no time in returning to LightningClan's camp.

The sudden firmness in her friend's tone had her smiling softly, a chortle of humor escaping her mouth. "You sound just like my father." Came her short reply, starting to walk back in the direction of Lightningclan camp. Her smile turned into something of a playful grin however as she soon sidled up against Cloudypaw. "Though honestly, you look like you're about ready to collapse as well. Maybe we should keep each other held up until we get back to camp." Her voice, though carrying a hint of exhaustion, still seemed somewhat light and energetic in spite of everything. In fact, it even seemed to have something of a teasing lilt to it as she spoke, making it sound almost as though she were flirting with her friend.
It wasn't long before they had made it back to camp however, and as she'd promised, Batpaw headed directly for the Apprentice den. With a brief glance back at her companion, she soon padded into the den and curled up in her nest, collapsing quickly and falling right back to sleep without another word.
