BRIGHTPAW
"Stupid mouse!" Brightpaw cursed under her breath, scratching at the dirt. It was the middle of new-leaf and her white pelt stuck out as a painful contrast against the green grass. She thought if she hunted closer to dusk she'd be able to avoid the issues of her pelt enough to actually catch something. However, that was the third mouse she missed and Brightpaw figured she should call it quits. Frustrated at herself, Brightpaw looked toward the sky for any sign of advice but instead was met with a chilly brush to her shoulder. Turning quickly she was greeted with the spirit form of Shadepaw. "Shadepaw" She greeted, holding back the urge to rush toward him and brush against his shoulder. The only sensation she'd find would be a rush of cold air and empty space.
How is Brightpaw today?" He asked, sitting down across from her, his posture relaxed. In the moons since their first meeting, Shadepaw and Brightpaw had regularly met up with each other. He'd usually greet her in the dimness of the apprentice den before coaxing her out into the center of camp or on some adventure. Despite the obvious, Brightpaw was glad to have a friend like Shadepaw. He offered her tips in her battle moves which surprised her mentor, but most of the time they talked about silly things. Considering how close they had become, Brightpaw was careful to how she felt toward him. Things couldn't be changed and Shadepaw's state was one of them.
"I'm doing alright," She didn't want to bring up her failures in terms of the mouse. "I finally got down that swiping move you showed me. My mentor was really proud of me!" She boasted for a moment, finding it easy to talk about her achievements to Shadepaw.
"That's really great! I bet you will be made a warrior soon!" Shadepaw replied, showing no signs of distress now she would surpass him, it seemed he was proud. Brightpaw beamed at him for a moment before she realized her cheeks had grown hot and she quickly had to look away. Shadepaw must have noticed because his nose pressed against her cheek and quickly cooled them, but there seemed to be something else in the gesture. Her amber eyes shot up to meet the starlight-blue of his eyes. In a moment of shock, Brightpaw took a few steps back which only made Shadepaw's eyes shift as if he was distressed. "I'm sorry if I upset you Brightpaw! You just looked cute and nervous and I wanted you make you feel better. I - I - I was stupid," He rambled, rising upwards to his paws and attempting to step toward her. When she didn't step back anymore he relaxed but remained standing. Brightpaw exhaled loudly before finding the courage to meet his gaze again, but not before her eyes saw them.
Three large scratch marks marred the fur and skin across his chest. The wounds which didn't looked healed but weren't grotesque either simply kept her attention. Shadepaw had told the story once. He and one of his siblings were tracking a badger, attempting to use the creature's death as a means to earn the warrior name. Shadepaw and his brother were able to track down the creature and instigate a fight. Shadepaw's brother died as the beast tore into him, crushing his spine. Shadepaw had manged to run despite his wound to his chest, he collapsed in the middle of camp before dying. Even if the wounds were unsettling, Brightpaw didn't find them gross, but they did catch her attention.
"Its okay Shadepaw," She replied seeing him further relax until he sat back down. She moved closer, sitting across from him. He was alive and physical she would be close enough to feel his breath against her whiskers or hear the hum of his heart beat. Would you purr when she was around? Spirit-cats seemed able to purr, but she wasn't always able to hear them and maybe it only happened sometimes. "It's just I.. I don't want to..um.." She struggled to find the words, but Shadepaw pressed his nose to her forehead this time letting the 'touch' linger. Brightpaw didn't mind the chill, it made her feel alive.
"I know, I don't want you to hurt either and it would be cruel if I asked you," He stated, Brightpaw let his voice tickle her ear as she twitched them. "Just know, I feel less lonely with you around and I'd hate to lose you," He added. Brightpaw felt her cheeks warm again. That was the closest thing to any sort of declaration. It would be foolish to think either of them could be each other's 'one' they were quite literally on opposite sides of the world.
"If you were still here-here I doubt you would have given me a second glance," She replied which eased the tension between them and earned a short laugh from him. "Untrue, I think that if I saw you sitting alone outside of the apprentice den I would have still talked to you. I'd would have introduced myself with my warrior name. I'd still offer to help you with your training. I'd still be captivated by your eyes," He mused, forcing Brightpaw to blush further and feel the prickle of shyness against the nape of her neck.
"You don't mean that Shadepaw," She replied, leaning back to meet his starlight-blue gaze. He simply smiled and nodded again, nudging her check which was followed by the familiar sensation of cold air.
"Brightpaw, trust me when I say this. You are the best thing to have ever happened to me," His words were sincere and filled with emotion that Brightpaw felt herself being overwhelmed with. Even if thing didn't work out 'normally' Brightpaw knew she'd be able to do anything as long as Shadepaw was there.
