LIONSTAR leader of treeclan Blinded by the light of a new sun After the tragic event that had taken their medicine cat from them, the patrols had been almost doubled in size; he would take no chances. Demon had made it clear that three cats were not enough to frighten the lynx away anymore—or the mountain cat's desperation was outweighing his sense of risk. Lionstar wouldn't pretend to understand what went on in their adversary's mind. He didn't want to, not unless it would help him protect his Clan.
Lionstar led the dawn patrol himself, with Swandive, Thornstrike, Blackfire and Firepaw making up the moderately sized unit of cats he took with him along the NightClan border. All had been quiet on that front; he would've found it unusual if it weren't for NightClan no longer being helmed by that irritating she-cat, Ravenstar; her successor, Dimstar, seemed far more reasonable.
When they reached the edge of the mountains, walking along the Clan border that was a distinguishing scent line to alert loners and other ilk that this was no longer free territory, Lionstar scent-marked a few boulders and trees, before turning to address the group. "Thornstrike, lead the others back to camp. Firepaw and I are going to stay here."
He kept up a calm disposition, though shared a knowing look with Thornstrike—Firepaw's father—the other tom knowing perfectly well why he was breaking away from the rest of the group. A worried glint seemed to show in Thornstrike's eyes for half a moment; keep my daughter safe, it said, and Lionstar gave a certain nod. He would protect her with his own life; they would begin hunting out here and work their way inward. They were far from Demon's den, though that could prove little consolation.
With a stern expression, Lionstar tapped Firepaw gently on the shoulder, corraling the eager ginger she-cat to walk with him closer to a more noticeable TreeClan marker. "Do you know why you are staying behind with me, Firepaw?" Perhaps she could guess why, perhaps not. He would enjoy informing her that he was to be her new mentor—but he would enjoy watching her figure it out for herself even more.
Lionstar smiled, unable to resist. A cool leaf-fall wind ruffled his impressive mane, and he regarded her with that paternal patience he was known for when it came to apprentices. It would be good to hear her thought processes; to know what she was like, not from a leader's perspective, but from a mentor's perspective. As a Clanmate. If she was anything like her mother (and she seemed like Emberstorm's little shadow), then she had so much potential wrapped up in her fluffy ginger body.
It would be a privilege to train her. Take it to the world, gonna sing it like an anthem

i've still got a lot of fight left in me Firepaw carried herself surely across the forest floor. Her green gaze was wide and sparkling as she trotted along, putting on extra bursts of speed occasionally to keep up with the much longer strides of the warriors she was on patrol with. She was trying to remain happy and perky, she was the only apprentice on patrol with warriors and the Clan's leader! Yet although she held her tail high and proud the tip of it kept drooping slightly as she trekked on in unusual silence. She was happy and all but it was just, she was clever enough to know that the only reason she was tagging along here was because she didn't have a mentor of her own to bring her training with the other apprentices. She sighed, flanks heaving with the exhaled breath as she continued forward, thankful for the shade sheltering her thick pelt from the scorching heat. She wanted nothing more than to be the best Warrior she could ever be, how was she supposed to do that without a mentor to teach her what to do? She fixed her bright gaze on the large form of their leader who led the patrol. The large tom seemed lost in his own thoughts and she wondered idly what it was that he was thinking. Yet the thought that pestered her the most was, was he ever going to appoint her a new mentor?
She blinked guiltily, fixing her gaze back on the territories surrounding them. As leader he obviously had lots of responsibility and it hadn't been that long since she'd lost her mentor but she still felt irritation buzzing beneath her pelt. Flicking her ears she realized that she'd fallen behind again and put on another burst of speed to catch up, almost colliding with the warriors and pulling back hastily just in time. Twitching her whiskers with embarrassment she ducked her head momentarily before lifting it again and continuing on with a more determined stance. How dare she be trailing behind pitying herself when she was supposed to be helping her Clan! She could be teaching herself here both not to be a whingebag and how to sharpen her senses when patrolling. Feeling proud of herself for behaving so maturely she trotted along acting a bit more like her own self. She was on patrol with Lionstar while the other apprentices just had to do the usual training! A slight twinge of jealousy did manage to worm its way in at the thought of what they might be learning but she simply chose to ignore it.
Her round gaze continued to sweep itself over the trunks of the high trees. She'd always been a good climber and relished in the rush she got when she reached the top. She knew some cats, even in TreeClan, feared the height and the damage that the fall could cause and she supposed it made sense but being a Wild cat would always have its risks. They were not the kittypets elders spoke of in their tales, they took risks to survive and she knew being able to hide in the branches of the trees would come in useful if cats inexperienced with such a skill decided to attack the camp. At the thought of battle her eyes glittered even more and her tail tip twitched restlessly, if there was ever a battle she would most definitely join and prove herself. She would slay any cat who challenged her Clan! Which is why you need to train...That horrid little voice at the back of her mind just really wanted to ruin her good mood didn't it! She swished her tail stubbornly, well it wouldn't! Tonight she would slip out and train herself if that was what it would take.
She grew quiet as they reached the border, whisker's quivering excitedly as she stood by the other warriors. However surprise ran through her as Lionstar spoke to her father and the rest of the patrol to return back and leave the two of them here. She felt her heartbeat quicken with a mixture of nerves and excitement. What could the leader of their Clan possibly want with her? She saw her father exchange a glance with Lionstar and she gazed up at the two toms with unguarded curiosity until her father turned and led the other cats away. As the others disappeared she turned back to the large tom and tried to stifle her burning curiosity. She remembered her mother once telling her 'patience is key'. She followed obediently as he led her to a marker on the border with a tip of his tail and stopped to gaze up at him. She could hardly stand still with a the mixture of nerves, impatience and excitement stirring in her stomach and she shifted from paw to paw in the prickly grass.
When he finally did speak she was surprised to hear it was a question he was asking. Why he'd held her back? Wasn't he supposed to be telling her that? She hesitated, not wanting to blurt out something stupid so she held her tongue firmly. Was it a trick question of sorts? Her gaze narrowed and she kneaded the ground with confusion as she racked her brains for an answer. What could he possibly want with her? She felt hopefulness begin to fill her as a possible thought flittered into her mind. The only thing she could think of that made her different to the other apprentices was that she didn't have a mentor. Was he going to appoint her a new mentor at last? She squirmed with excitement and curiosity as to who it could possibly be. She did wonder in the back of her mind why he'd had to bring her out here to tell her but she didn't spend too long lingering on the thought. He had his reasons she supposed and if she was right with her assumptions she wanted to know who it was! "Err I wouldn't say I know but I'll definitely take a guess!" She flicked her tail from side to side with cooped up energy as she practically buzzed excitedly and she felt confidence battle her nerves at the warm smile he gave. "Am I going to get a new mentor now or soon?! Oh please say yes!" She pleaded, unable to keep in the last little outburst as she stood gazing up at him with hopeful determination in her stunning green gaze. She was going to be a Warrior as good as Lionstar no matter what! Fawn || 1,097 Whoops this turned out longer than expected but I got it done <33

LIONSTAR leader of treeclan Blinded by the light of a new sun Lionstar laughed, perhaps having underestimated her energy a little. "You're right, Firepaw. You are getting a new mentor now." The golden warrior leaned in and touched noses with the apprentice, like he would have done had this been a normal apprenticeship ceremony. "Are you prepared to work hard, Firepaw? We have some ground we need to cover before the Clan gets much busier preparing for leaf-fall. With any luck, by leafbare, TreeClan will have one new warrior."
The Clan leader took a subtle step back, fully expecting her to explode into whoops and cheers, the ginger she-cat so aptly named, it brought warmth to his heart to see someone so young and so full of life. I hope she keeps that fire, for as many moons as StarClan grants her. He had seen some apprentices lose their fire as they'd aged, lose that burning energy; well, perhaps lose wasn't the right word. That fire merely matured or simmered down to make room for other things...
And in some cats, he'd seen it extinguished so thoroughly, the sight of it almost made his heart ache. Hopefully Firepaw would be in the former category, not the latter.
"We'll start with hunting, and I want to see what Nightshade's already taught you so far. After that, if there's time and you aren't too tired, we'll discuss fighting tactics." Just the basics. Lionstar planned to offer her an assessment of sorts, just to see what her current level of progress was. The enormous golden tom stretched out his front limbs, muscles and sinew flexing in the sunlight beneath a dense blackish-golden pelt. When he straightened, he looked energized, his gaze reflecting the sunlight like fossilized amber caught in the rays.
Mouse. Vole. Shrew. Squirrel. Then we'll move on to birds tomorrow morning. Catching birds was a different hunting method entirely, and one he wanted to devote the morning to when the birds were most active. It was a shame they were not expecting any rain soon; plenty of puddles meant plenty of bathing pools for birds, and that would've brought them closer to the ground more often.
Recalling all of this knowledge felt good. It was as though he were giving himself an assessment, combing through his long memory to the earliest days of Lionpaw, apprenticed to Sagefur. His whiskers twitched as his lips moved into a smile of fondness, remembering with warmth the old cat's wry, pleasant attitude.

i've still got a lot of fight left in me She shifted from paw to paw without wasting a mere moment to take a break from the continuos movement. She was unable to keep in the little mrrow of excitement that burst from her the moment he confirmed her hopeful thoughts. She was getting a mentor, at long last! Despite her longing to yowl her joy she remained silent however practically trembling with eager excitement as to know who it could possibly be. When the large tom leaned down to touch noses with her she blinked in dumbfounded surprise for a few moments before jerking her head up and bumping noses with him rather painfully, letting out a throaty purr as she did so. However once she leaned back she ran her tongue over her paw and dragged it over her ears to take a moment to gather her bearings and get over the embarrassment of how unprepared she'd been for that.
However her clever little mind was already beginning to let everything fall into place and she was already gazing up at him with round, shocked eyes. The sun glinted off her green gaze causing the the orbs to glimmer a magnificent luminous colour. Once he started speaking her excitement became too much and she sprang back onto her paws, tail flicking from side to side with contained energy. "I-I, of course yes Lionstar I am going to work harder than any other apprentice in TreeClan- in all the Clans!" She exclaimed confidently however she was still struggling to overcome the shock of the truth that struck her. He'd kept her here alone, performed the actions of an apprentice ceremony, was he trying to say he was going to be her mentor? Instantly lapsing into a delighted purr the little she-cat couldn't help but blurt out. "Are you my new mentor Lionstar? You, our leader, want to train me?" She practically squeaked the words, unable to get over it however she was quickly adapting as she usually did and the shock was giving way to delight.
"I'm definitely going to be the best warrior now with you teaching me!" She meowed with delighted pleasure burning in her emerald orbs. However quickly realizing she was acting like a kit, the ginger apprentice straightened and forced a more serious expression onto her face. She puffed out her chest proudly and kept herself as still as she could however her whiskers still trembled with barely contained excitement.
As he began speaking again, getting down to business she watched on with admiration in her eyes. He was honestly the cat she wanted to grow up to be and he was going to be the one teaching her! She couldn't be happier. She listened on attentively, gaze growing more serious as she let her thoughtful side take over. The mention of fighting practice sent a tremor of new excitement through her. She hadn't got around to much of that with Nightshade! Not much hunting either, regretfully but they had gone through a few basics. Looking up to Lionstar she meowed regretfully "I didn't get to go through that much with Nightshade sadly, but we did go through some basics with hunting like how to find and track prey and how you should make sure the wind is blowing towards you so that it carries the prey scent to you and it doesn't know you're there. We also tried out the hunting crouch, supposedly I'm quite good at it." She added the last part proudly, happy to have remembered all that Nightshade had thought her. Thinking for a moment she added on more seriously. "You also needn't treat me like a new apprentice, I'm a fast learner!" She insisted, she didn't want to be treated like she was younger than the other apprentices her age!
She trotted alongside her new mentor, feeling as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. It seemed her chances of being the best warrior had been increased once again!

LIONSTAR leader of treeclan Blinded by the light of a new sun "You also needn't treat me like a new apprentice, I'm a fast learner!"
Lionstar had to suppress the urge to chortle, his eyes glittering with the subdued humor. "I know you're not a new apprentice, but there's still so much to learn. However, I want to see you in action, Firepaw. Show me a hunting crouch, and at the same time I want you to tell me what scents you can pick up."
They were near the Great Maple, and thus a plethora of smells, some old and stale, some new, some floral and some fauna, was around them in abundance. Lionstar himself detected an old, lingering scent of squirrel that must have been digging for acorns near one of the oaks.
Similar to how he had appraised Badgerpaw a few days ago, Lionstar fixed his attention on the bright ginger she-cat, noting her posture, noting the weight distribution and the position of her tail. It was easy to be uncertain of one's tail, or to forget the right place for it and allow it to either drag too low or hang too high. If they were in dense foliage low to the ground, then it was best not to let it drag. If they were hiding in tall bushes and shrubs, keeping it low near the leafy detritus would serve better than letting it wave about.
He suspected she might have trouble with that, given her excitable temperament. She was very expressive, very physical, though much of her personality came out through her intonation and the shimmer of her eyes. He would correct any faults he noticed, as was only right. A warm wind blew through the shaded forest, ruffling Lionstar's mane and causing him to raise his nose to the air current.
Mouse. It was a little hard to detect through the sugar maple seeds (the Great Maple always smelled sweet during greenleaf and newleaf) and the pleasant aroma wafting from wherever the sap was unexpectedly exposed, but many moons of practice made it easy for the tom to pinpoint their prey.
Could she smell it? Lionstar lowered his muzzle from the wind, not about to give anything away, his keen eyes still trained on Emberstorm's daughter. Lionstar itched to go pursue the mouse himself, to enjoy the pride-inducing rush of catching food for his Clan, providing for his loved ones, but he refrained. Sometimes restraint was better than giving in to every single impulse; if it hadn't been for the bountiful season, he might have considered stalking the mouse himself.
But she deserved a chance to try. And the reward of cultivating a young feline into a loyal and talented warrior of TreeClan was worth more than the few seconds' rush of catching prey. Take it to the world, gonna sing it like an anthem

i've still got a lot of fight left in me Fresh excitement stirred within her as she gazed up at the large tom admiringly. He wanted her to show him her hunting crouch! She shuffled her paws enthusiastically, going over everything that she'd been taught beforehand. She took the time to turn in a slow circle, observing the terrain surrounding her in a way she hoped seemed professional. Her face had an evidently put on business look to it although of course she presumed it looked convincing and her tail tip twitched thoughtfully. As she opened her mouth she was slightly daunted by the torrent of scents that seemed to practically attack her scent glands and she hesitated for a moment. Slight nerves spiked at her pads but she pushed it down firmly, she could do this if she stayed calm. For now she decided to focus on her crouch before focusing on the many scents hanging in the area. As she dropped low to the ground she held herself as light as she could letting only the tips of her long stomach fur brush slightly off the dusty ground beneath.
There was never a shortage of vegetation in TreeClan it seemed which was always an advantage for them if cats not used to maneuvering around the constant shrubbery decided to try and invade. However in this particular spot near the roots of the great maple it was slightly thinner and Firepaw supposed it was due to the constant shade supplied by the long limbed branches stretching high above. Sun dappled the ground around her where it could break through the thick canopy and her ginger pelt seemed to almost glimmer like a flame where it hit it and she had to ignore the instinct that came with being young to pounce on the beams. This was her chance to prove herself to Lionstar! She kept herself pressed low but not so low that she would catch on anything poking out from the forest floor lying in wait to trip or snag on an unsuspecting cat. After a few moments of adjusting she was pretty sure had it right however as she let her focus drift from keeping her muscles bunched and wander to the scents hanging in the warm air her tail started doing its own thing. She failed to notice it twitching as it usually did when she was trying to concentrate and it instinctively raised slightly higher than it should've been.
There was a frown placed neatly on her mouth as she kept opening it to drink in the smells around her. There was so many stale and fresher ones it was so hard to pick out which was which! She'd began kneading the ground stressfully but with a sharp shake of her head she forced herself to calm with a great deal of effort. Being flustered was not going to help, she would have to take her time. She stayed still for a good few moments, gaze narrowed with concentrated effort as she picked out which scent was which. There was the scent of squirrel nearest to her but as her heart began to beat quicker with excitement she quickly realized that it was stale. It had long since left this spot. She sorted through a few more staler scents through the sweet smell of maple clouding her senses and just as she was just about to give up as uncharacteristic as it was, something stopped her. She lifted her muzzle higher into the wind and inhaled deeply finally catching it again. Mouse! It was nearby and definitely not stale! Feeling pride wash over her she forgot that she was supposed to be hiding and jumped to her paws triumphantly. "There's a mouse!" she exclaimed with a grin before suddenly realizing the mistake she'd just made. "Mousedung, I wasn't supposed to react like that" She lowered her ears slightly in embarrassed shame. Of course she'd make a fool of herself! However as she tasted the air again she blinked with relief when realizing that she hadn't scared off the prey.
She dropped back into the crouch, slightly rushed now and accidentally misplacing her tail as it remained visible where it quivered with anticipation. "It's still here" She breathed. She blinked up at him questioningly for guidance. Suddenly remembering something she'd been told on one of her first days as an apprentice. 'A mouse will feel the vibrations of your pawsteps before it sees you' She shifted her position so she stood lightly on the tips of her paws puffing out her chest with pride and hoping Lionstar had noticed. Her heart bet quickly at the thought of making her first catch. Fawn || words sorry to keep you waiting!

LIONSTAR leader of treeclan Blinded by the light of a new sun "There's a mouse!"
It was hard not to laugh out loud at Firepaw's enthusiasm; besides, she quickly realized her error, following it up with an embarrassed comment about how she shouldn't have done that. "Shhh," he reminded her gently, lowering into a hunting crouch so that he could be closer to the ground, prepared to catch the mouse if it escaped her clutches.
He believed she would do well, however. Nightshade had been a decent mentor, from what he knew of the tom. "Mind your tail," mewed Lionstar, voice barely above a whisper so as not to disturb her concentration. If Firepaw had been a heavier cat, he might have recommended sliding her paws across the forest floor where applicable—it would help her edge in closer, without having to lift up each foot and set it down again, which was bound to cause a considerable vibration if she'd been stockier.
But Firepaw was more fur and enthusiasm than body-weight. He nodded approvingly at her 'tiptoed' approach, watching for the results with keen golden eyes. The rustle near the sugar maple stilled, and Lionstar held his breath, straining his ears to listen for the soft, tell-tale scratch of mouse claws on tree roots as it snuffled through the leaves for more food.
The sugar maple looked splendid, the drought not effecting it as much as some of the other plants in the forest (its roots were deep, and would not surprise Lionstar in the least if they reached all the way under the soil to the sparkling brook), but the edges of the leaves, once crisp green, were already starting to turn golden-and-red with the approaching leaf-fall.
Soon enough, Firepaw was going to have the time of her life hunting. Her ginger coat would help her blend in magnificently; between the two of them—gold and orange—as long as her skills were as sharp as her attention span, they would bring back plenty of fresh kill for TreeClan. Of course, even if her pelt had been as black as night, there were still shadowy places to hide in the forest, and ways to take advantage of just about any coat color. She would do just fine.
Aware that the mouse might sense something was off if she took too long to approach, Lionstar silently urged her onward. Now, Firepaw! Here was her chance. Lionstar's whiskers twitched in anticipation, eager to see her perform. Was this her first catch? She had made it clear to him earlier that he was not to treat her like a new apprentice—so that must've meant she had some practice hunting.
Let's see how she does. Take it to the world, gonna sing it like an anthem

Firepaw "everyone says she lives in a fantasy world"
She blinked with surprise as he asked her to watch her tail, blinking sheepishly as she realised it was flicking restlessly and as she glanced back over her shoulder she could see the fiery limb held in full view. She dipped her head apologetically but kept her mouth firmly shut, she wasn't going to let herself risk scaring off the prey again. As she quickly shifted her position slightly so that she was correctly hidden, she could feel her heart beating quickly in her chest with excited anticipation. She was going to make her first catch! Well, there was a chance she could miss it but she wasn't going to dwell on that. She would succeed, she could feel it.
The shuffling that she'd been relying on to note its presence suddenly stopped and with a frown she leaned her ears forward, straining to catch a noise as her maw hung open to drink in the scents. After a number of dragged out moments she finally caught the soft scratching of what had to be its tiny paws rooting for food. A small pang of sadness disturbed her excitement. This mouse was just like them, trying to stock up on food to survive. What if it was a mother and had its own sort of kits back in its nest relying on their mother to be fed? She swallowed uncomfortably, Nightshade had mentioned that the first kill could be hard for an apprentice although she'd just brushed off his words. Maybe he'd been right. If only they could survive on things like nuts and berries too but even the thought made her nose wrinkle, life without prey sounded awful!
Realizing she'd probably lost precious time with her thoughts, she forced herself back to reality. Better this mouse die than a Clanmate from starvation she decided determinedly and soon felt her doubts get washed away by adrenaline as her instincts took over. She moved across the forest floor as silently as she could, trying to both take note of where her paws were falling as well as the location of her target like Nightshade had taught her. As she got closer a fresh burst of excitement disturbed her concentration and she inhaled sharply as a stick cracked loudly beneath her paw. The small critter, now visible amongst the roots, lifted its head in alarm and prepared to flee but it was too late.
With a strong kick of her hind legs, Firepaw sprang at it, managing to catch its tail as it tried to bolt and dragged it backwards where she could bite at its neck as swiftly as she could. Panting, she let the limp body fall to the ground. It hadn't been the most graceful of catches but she'd done it! She spun around to face Lionstar, eyes glowing with pride and a purr rumbling from her throat. "I did it!" She exclaimed delightedly. Suddenly she let her gaze fall down shyly to her paws as she admitted. "That was actually my first catch, Nightshade had me practicing on leaves and twigs but I hadn't actually done the real thing yet." She glanced back up at the large tom, emerald orbs shining hopefully in the sunlight. Would he be proud of her? TAG: Fawn , Notes: , Words: 551 |

LIONSTAR leader of treeclan Blinded by the light of a new sun "Well done!"
The golden tom beamed, showing his teeth in an encouraging smile, sharing in her joy at her very first catch. He felt fortunate to be a witness, remembering all too well how excited and competent he felt when he'd caught his first mouse. It was a fat one, too. Almost as big as a vole. He'd bragged to a group of wide-eyed kits that he'd caught a long-tailed vole, a very rare type of prey...
Lionstar's whiskers twitched with amusement. He'd been a bit of a troublemaker growing up; actually, he'd been a braggart growing up. He'd wanted to be the best there ever was (not unlike Firepaw here, but with a lot less sweetness behind it), which apparently meant he had to boast of his accomplishments and show off whenever the opportunity presented itself.
"That was very good, Firepaw. We will work on your footing, and soon enough you'll be catching all the mice in the forest." Lionstar purred, guiding her back towards camp with his densely fluffy tail across her shoulders. "We'll bring that to the elders, and you can make sure they know it's your first catch. I think they'd be honored to have such an important mouse." It was sure to brighten a few of their elders' days, old as they were they could still feel a simplistic happiness over sharing in the youngsters' joy.
It was but one of many 'firsts' for Firepaw, and Lionstar fully intended to keep her progress going skyward. Someday she would be hunting squirrels in their branches, patrolling with the other warriors, and bringing back dozens of prey as long as she worked hard and honed her skills. There was potential there, absolutely, but most of all there was drive.
The most talented cat in the forest would hardly make a good warrior if they didn't have any desire to be one. And Firepaw very badly wanted to be one. Lionstar had no worries there.
Aware that she might be tired from the patrolling (they had a long walk home), Lionstar decided to do most of the talking while she carried her mouse back, filling her in on various hunting tips and certain things to watch for. It felt good to be a mentor again; Stormchaser would have joked that it was just an excuse to talk without interruption. Lionstar felt a stab of melancholy for his old friend, hoping he was watching over the Clan from Silverpelt. Take it to the world, gonna sing it like an anthem

Firepaw "everyone says she lives in a fantasy world"
She purred delightedly at his praise, chest puffed out as she beamed proudly at her achievement. She'd made her first catch! It brought her one paw step closer to being the best warrior of all time and she grinned mischievously as her tail tip twitched energetically. She listened on eagerly as he spoke, nodding occasionally to show she was listening as she scooped the prey up into her jaws and let him lead her back in the direction of camp. Her first initial instinct was to respond with a protest at having to finish for the day but it was quickly washed away with excitement to deliver the prey to the elders and see their reaction at her catch! As she trotted along she also became aware of how much her paws hurt and even if she'd never admit it, she was tired.
For once in her life, she actually fell into an easy silence as she listened in on the words that her mentor spoke. Her ears remained angled towards him and every now and then she would glance up admiringly at the large tom when she wasn't watching out for roots hiding in wait to trip up a distracted apprentice! As she got closer to camp she felt lighter than she had in days, she had the best mentor in the whole Clan! There was definitely hope for her now!
