We're gonna play in the dark till it's golden again.
Batpaw stood near the border between Lightningclan and Treeclan, curiously staring off into the forest. Recently Larkfeather's question had gotten into her head and she found herself asking, how did Treeclan cope with not being able to see the sky all the time? Even as she stood there, staring off into the darkening woods, her mind had a hard time comprehending it.
She'd always personally loved being able to look up and see the stars at night, or the fluffy white clouds during the day. Still, she tried to make herself remember that the clans weren't all the same. Nightclan had their marsh, Treeclan had their trees and Rainclan, well they were all wet. It was still quite strange though, to imagine what life could be like in a different clan. Not that she would have ever considered leaving Lightningclan. Though it was still fun to imagine sometimes.
The sudden presence of an unfamiliar scent made itself known, pulling the dark apprentice out of her thoughts. She quickly took a defensive stance and puffed up, trying to make herself look bigger. "Who's there? Show yourself?!" She hissed out.

It was only given the close proximity to LightningClan that Appleshade was allowed to patrol by herself at all. She didn't fancy it. This was a she-cat who desired and thrived in good company, so to be given a task to complete by herself, well, sometimes she wondered why she even bothered getting out of her nest this morning.
Stifling a bored yawn, the pretty she-cat abided by the rules, scent-marking the open woods, her pale silver-sorrel cheek brushing against the bark and ferns until she was satisfied. Who is that smell? Appleshade's pelt bristled in the sunlight; there was someone in here that shouldn't be.
For one horrid heartbeat, she thought it was Demon, but the young voice of a LightningClan apprentice quickly shattered that concern. Appleshade laughed back, voice high and mellifluous. "Here I am~" 'Show yourself' was probably the nicest thing anycat could say to someone who adored the limelight, and Appleshade readily stepped out from behind the trees.
"Hello there. There's no reason to make a fuss, the open woods belong to TreeClan, you know." She smiled, partly dismayed it wasn't a handsome mentor-apprentice pair, but reveling in the unexpected company nevertheless. Perhaps this kitten's mentor hadn't told her that the open woods were, according to the last territory lines, in TreeClan's possession. |

T Batpaw felt her body instinctively relax upon seeing the attractive she-cat. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know." She said, her tone of voice immediately softening as she no longer felt immediately under threat. She hadn't even realized that she had stepped over the border.
The shadowy apprentice backed up a bit, smelling the air in attempt to rediscover the border so she may return to her side. Just how far in had she gotten anyways? If this pretty warrior hadn't found her would she have been in serious danger? The poor kitten's mind was reeling, but she soon enough turned herself around and started walking back in the direction of her clan. Briefly though, she wonder and somewhat hoped that the attractive warrior would follow her, even if it was to ensure that she really was heading back to her territory. She certainly wouldn't have minded the company a single bit.

Luckily for Batpaw, Appleshade did follow the she-cat to the edge of their differing territories, though not so much to ensure Batpaw stayed on the right side of the border but as to strike up a conversation. "Forgive me if this is rude, but how are things in LightningClan? I heard Firestar looked well at the last Gathering." She wasn't spying, by no means. Rather trying to segue into Clan gossip, always wanting to know about the latest couples and dramas playing out across borders.
If Appleshade knew this apprentice better, she would've started a conversation on a much more personal note (how is your father doing? Did your mother's ear cut heal nicely? I hope your brother managed to impress his mentor after all), but sadly she was lacking in any real knowledge about this she-cat. Even her name. Oh great StarClan, what if this is a sign I'm getting OLD? Oh, the horror. She used to be able to identify just about every cat she met—it wasn't HER fault that the new faces just kept cropping up from time to time.
That tended to happen in warmer moons, of course. Kits were being born or becoming apprentices, which meant a whole new group of cats to learn the names of. Appleshade didn't mind; she'd sooner devote her mind to matching faces with names than teaching her own apprentice. |

T The apprentice turned her head slightly, looking up at Appleshade as she spoke of Firestar. "Oh, yeah Firestar's been doing really well. Which is surprising because she's been very busy lately, I would have thought that she'd be a little more tired than what she is, because whatever she's been doing has been really occupying her time. She even forgot to give me my apprentice ceremony for an entire moon because of it." Batpaw stated, continuing to pad on ahead.
Eventually, once she was safely on the other side of the border and in her own territory, she turned around to face Appleshade completely. "My name is Batpaw by the way! It's really nice to meet you, and thank you for not threatening to beat me up. Or um, not actually beating me up either." The shadowy apprentice once again adopted her usual, cheerful attitude, glad to have met another cat today and to not get hurt in the process. If only every meeting with a cat from a different clan went like this, she'd probably have a whole lot more friends.

Again Appleshade laughed. What a sweetheart. "I'm Appleshade, and you are quite welcome, Batpaw. Thank you for going back to your border." So Firestar's fairly busy this moon, hm? That sounds like it's leading up to something...
"Sorry to hear you had to wait a whole moon, she does sound rather busy." Appleshade smiled, fortunate to have met such a polite young feline. "Do you enjoy living in LightningClan? I always wondered what it was like to live in tunnels. Us TreeClan cats—we live in hollowed logs, if you can believe it." Thoughtfully tilting her head, the pretty she-cat's eyes filled with mirth. "I suppose that must sound just as strange to you as rabbit warrens do to us!"
Appleshade wouldn't be able to bear living underground. NightClan's cavern home sounded horrible, absolutely horrible, but the warrens of LightningClan had to be a close second. The closed off environment... No thank you. In TreeClan, you could stay nice and cozy and dry without fear of the walls or ceiling collapsing. Besides, the rain always made a nice sound on the bark when they had a bit of stormy weather.

T "Oh yes, I do like living in Lightningclan! The tunnels aren't really as bad as they look, though they can be somewhat cramped at times. Still, there's lots of nice cats in Lightningclan and I honestly think that makes up for it's flaws." Batpaw mewled out happily.
"Besides, I don't honestly think there's a single thing any of the other clans could offer me that could replace my Cloudypaw....I-I'm sorry, my friend Cloudypaw." She quickly corrected herself. She didn't want anyone to get the impression that she had a crush on Cloudypaw or anything. That would simply be ridiculous, not to mention probably extremely embarrassing for the poor she-cat that Batpaw called a friend. "A-Anyways, I'm sure Treeclan is a great place, but I just couldn't see why anyone would choose it over Lightningclan. That's not to say that Treeclan isn't worthy of such a thing it's just that I myself have a hard time seeing why someone would choose it over Lightningclan." She quickly stated, her skin heating up beneath her fur. Wonderful, now she was all flustered.

Appleshade had a certain ear for detail, particularly when those details pertained to masked feelings or half-truths the speaker might not want uncovered. Or, in some cases, did want uncovered, they were just waiting for someone to ask the right questions.
The slip-up made by Batpaw had Appleshade smiling, a knowing glow entering her eyes. "Cloudypaw sounds nice. What can you tell me about them? Maybe I can meet your Cloudypaw next time." She was less interested in the key differences between LightningClan and TreeClan (why talk about the landscape when you can talk about love?), unable to help the way her curiosity was piqued every time someone expressed an interest that went well beyond friendship.
There was a part of Appleshade still burning from Whiteclaw's rejection, still wounded and wailing over it deep inside. But she hid this well; it would be cruel of her to warn Batpaw that love was painful. That it could hurt sometimes. But would it be better to spare her the pain of finding out about it herself? Oh but there's no saying what happened to me will happen to her. No, her rejection had been... unique.

T Batpaw's ears pinned to her skull in a display of discomfort. Did she really want to tell a stranger about her friend? For all she knew, Appleshade could have been some cruel, sick cat that wanted to know who she cared about so she could rip them straight out of her life later on. In fact, what was she even doing talking to a Treeclan cat anyways?!
The dark apprentice sighed softly, but continued to answer her questions anyways, figuring that if the Treeclan warrior had any intentions of harming her, she would have done so already. "Cloudypaw is very nice actually. A little bit shy but that's alright." She mewled in response to her questions. "Um, as for meeting her next time. Well, if there is a next time I might bring her with me. Not sure how she'd react to seeing you though," She spoke truthfully, there was absolutely no way of knowing how Cloudypaw would react to seeing the Treeclanner, or to the knowledge that Batpaw had been speaking to said Treeclanner.

"I understand," Appleshade mewed sympathetically. "Not every cat believes in friendships with cats from other Clans. I'm glad to see that you do not seem to be opposed to them." The senior warrior paused, her dainty pink nose pointed up as she scented what appeared to be an incoming patrol or a few cats out hunting while the heat wasn't so intense. "I'm afraid I have to go now, Batpaw. It was lovely talking to you, and maybe I'll see you and Cloudypaw at the next Gathering, hm~?"
There, now I have something to look forward to. That would be quite fun. Appleshade loved Gatherings, for obvious reasons; not only were there copious amounts of handsome toms of varying ages, but there were also cats she considered her friends. It was the perfect time to socialize and flirt and just have a grand time without having to worry about borders and scent markings.
Before Skyfall and the others could accuse her of being disloyal, Appleshade called another soft goodbye to Batpaw before walking back into the foliage, pushing through the berry bushes to meet up with the hunting party.
