It had been different when it was just her and her siblings in the nursery. The other queens had been expecting kits, but there were none actually in the nursery with her, Sunnypaw, Niko and Galepaw. The apprentices' den, however...
Cloudypaw fidgeted in her nest, unable to get comfortable. The sound of so many cats breathing, the stillness of it all—it was a little uncomfortable. She hadn't truly been a part of the Clan in the nursery, not like this. So even though only a few days had passed since Firestar had christened them with Clan names, Cloudypaw struggled to adjust.
I can't lay here much longer. Blearily, Cloudypaw stepped with dainty white paws around the forms of her sleeping siblings and Clanmates, softly wishing them goodnight as she headed to the den entrance. Even just being near the tunnel entrance was healthier for her psyche; Cloudypaw took a few much needed breaths, grateful that the Greenleaf nights were cooler than the Greenleaf days.
It took her a twitch of the whiskers to realize she wasn't the only one awake. Cloudypaw shuffled awkwardly on her paws, stealing shy glances at the dark-furred apprentice she'd almost missed entirely. "Do... D-Do you mind if I sit here with you?" What if she doesn't like me? What if she's sitting vigil or doing something important to the Clan and I'm interrupting?
As much as Cloudypaw wanted to take back those words, they were already said, and the young she-cat's baleful blue eyes settled upon the other apprentice, awaiting the inevitable response.

We're gonna play in the dark till it's golden again.
It was quite rare for Batpaw to ever feel the need to sit still. Rather quite the opposite in most cases actually. She usually felt the desire to get up and walk around, allowing her limbs to stretch and her paws to feel the earth beneath her. Yet for some reason, today had been a different day. All throughout the day she hadn't felt the desire to walk or move, rather feeling more inclined to sit and rest instead. It was unusual, she couldn't recall ever really experiencing something like it before and honestly, that only made it harder for her to sit still.
Yes her body was crying for a break, to be allowed just a moment of sleep to recover the energy lost, but she ignored it's pleas. The dark apprentice was convinced that doing so would cause things to go back to normal. So she rose from her place in the apprentice den and silently padded over to the entrance, gazing up at the starry sky with curious yellow eyes.
A flicker of movement off to the side caught her attention, and the yellow-eyed apprenticed quickly stepped to the side so she wouldn't be in their way. She sat silent, watching as a fellow apprentice made her way towards the entrance. Normally, she would have been more than happy to greet her comrade in that loud and boisterous way of hers, but others were sleeping not too far from her. Certainly it would be rude to wake them so suddenly. So instead, she remained quiet, eyeing the tabby she-cat from the dark corner or the den. She noticed a faint twitch of the cat's whiskers and tilted her head curiously as the other feline took a few glances at her before finally speaking.
"Do... D-Do you mind if I sit here with you?" What if she doesn't like me? What if she's sitting vigil or doing something important to the Clan and I'm interrupting?
The shadowy apprentice's ears twitched slightly as she nodded. "I wouldn't mind at all, company of any kind is always welcome." She responded softly, lightly tapping the spot beside her with her tail.

To Cloudypaw's immense surprise, the she-cat actually invited her to sit next to her; Cloudypaw's skin heated up beneath her pelt, but she timidly took up a place beside the dark she-cat as if afraid the invitation was time-based, and would expire if she took too long to decide.
I don't know her name... Oh... Oh what do I say? I should just ask her. That would be the right thing to do; surely she couldn't be blamed for not knowing some of the apprentices' names? She'd been kept in the nursery until she was 8 moons, like the rest of her siblings...
Cloudypaw desperately racked her brains for anything that might be a hint as to who this she-cat was. Apprentice ceremonies... apprentice ceremonies.. Oh, hers was the first one she'd ever seen, wasn't it? Cloudypaw could recall peeking out of the nursery behind Burningleaf and Flashbrook, watching with curiosity and kittenish fear both as Firestar called the Clan together for an announcement...
Who was her mentor? Br... Brightpool. Nightstep's sister. So that makes her... "Batpaw!" Cloudypaw gasped and immediately covered her mouth with her tabby tail, apologizing with her eyes for that sudden outburst. Her ears were pinned down to her skull, whiskers twitching with embarrassment as she heard a few cats muttering sleepily in their nests behind her. "S-Sorry," she whispered. "I just remembered your name. It's... It's Batpaw, isn't it? D-Do I have that right?"

We're gonna play in the dark till it's golden again.
A brief silence had fallen between the two of them, shortly after Cloudypaw took a seat beside her. She didn't feel compelled to talk as she usually did, rather feeling content to just sit and enjoy the company while she had the chance. The silence was interrupted however, by a brief gasp of her name from the she-cat beside her, causing the shadowy apprentice to jump, startled by the sudden noise.
"S-Sorry, I just remembered your name. It's... It's Batpaw, isn't it? D-Do I have that right?"
She gave a quick nod of her head. "Yes that's right,my name is Batpaw. It's very nice to meet you."She smiled pleasantly, happy that her companion knew what her name was. She then froze, realizing that she did not remember this cat's name. "Um, I can't quite recall your name though, I'm sorry." She said, disappointed in herself for not being able to remember her own clanmate's name. Though she did have to admit, she wasn't quite sure how she'd forgotten this feline's name. She seemed to be quite pretty, on par with even Larkfeather, and she was sure she would remember a cat like that.

Oh, I should've introduced myself. I'm such a featherhead... "I-I'm Mi—Cloudypaw." She dipped her head gently, as if gesturing to herself in the most awkward fashion possible. "Nice to meet you too, Batpaw." Does this mean we're friends now? We both know each other's names and... she doesn't seem to dislike me? It was still early, yet. The tip of her tabby tail flicked, realizing she'd nearly given the wrong name by accident.
Well, 'Mina' wasn't the wrong name, it just wasn't her Clan name.
"I'm new," she mewed after a moment, voice still so small and quiet compared to the average cat. She couldn't help it; speaking at higher volumes just didn't seem very... her. It didn't feel proper, to the little tabby and white she-cat with the clear snowy paws. It was much easier to speak softly, to listen and to look, and to occasionally ask a question than carry on long conversations. "Do you think we can train together?" Cloudypaw whispered next, hoping that her new friend would be able to help her get the hang of Clan life.
She wanted badly to rely on her siblings (always had) but this was uncharted territory for all of them. Worried about making mistakes on her first training sessions with Nightstep (the last thing she wanted to do was embarrass herself in front of such a handsome, capable warrior), Cloudypaw desperately hoped Batpaw could come with them. Would the other she-cat help? Or leave her to learn on her own?
If she did, she wouldn't blame her... She should learn on her own but...
Cloudypaw's whiskers trembled as a nervous quiver passed through the length of her body. She was afraid of messing up. Afraid of disappointing Burningleaf and Flashbrook, who had stood up to Firestar to get her and her siblings to stay. Who had welcomed them so sincerely into the family. Cloudypaw could call herself a lot of things, but 'brave' was not one of them. Word Count: 330 WordsTags: @marshymutt Notes:

We're gonna play in the dark till it's golden again.
Everything seemed to click once she heard the tabby say she was new. 'Of course! That's why I couldn't remember her name. I hadn't even learned it yet!' She thought to herself, feeling much better now that she no longer thought she had forgotten her companion's name, "Well it's nice to meet you Cloudypaw!" She chirped out loudly, causing several other cats in the den to let out a groan of contempt. It seemed that she had once again forgotten her clanmates were sleeping.
"Uh, anyways it would be an honor to train with you Cloudypaw. I'm sure our mentors wouldn't mind letting us learn together, and it sounds like it would be a lot of fun to have a sparring partner once I've learned how to fight." Batpaw gave a soft giggle, keeping her voice low so as to not agitate her sleeping clanmates anymore than she already had. "I bet we'll work well together."

Cloudypaw nodded, overcome with shyness from Batpaw's positive reaction. She had winced at the contemptuous groans from their denmates, but her fur quickly lied flat, as her new friend didn't seem to think it was a cause for alarm. I can't wait to tell Sunnypaw and Niko that I made a friend. They would be happy to meet her, Cloudypaw was sure. It was good to make friends with the other apprentices—they were all going to be here a while, so why not... make the most of it?
"I think so too, Batpaw." Cloudypaw's ears flattened as her confidence dipped, but she was learning to use her voice, not keep her fears so bottled up inside. "I... I don't know if I'll be very good at sparring. Just to warn you." So please go easy on me.
Fighting. Oh, how that sounded so frightening when you had no experience to speak of or much of a knack for it. Sunnypaw and Galepaw were already better at it than she was, they preferred to tumble around the nursery while she had been content to listen to the stories the queens and her fathers shared with her.
Will Nightstep be disappointed in me? Cloudypaw's stomach lurched. Oh dear. Well all this worrying wasn't going to make sleep happen any sooner.

The dark-furred apprentice listened to her new friend's concerns with how good she would be at sparring, nodding in response. "That's alright, I'll go easy on you if you'd like. I just think it would be fun to have someone to practice and train with. We're still just apprentices after all, we've got a lot to learn and it might be easier to learn together than on our own." She mewled out happily.
"Also, it's perfectly fine if you're not that great of a fighter, even when you become a warrior. I think what's most important is that you find what you're good at and keep working at it so you can help the clan. You might be better at hunting or caring for kits, and that's okay too. There's a lot of different ways that you can help the clan so don't feel like you've gotta do it one way or the other." She said, hoping her words would cheer her new friend up a bit.

Cloudypaw hadn't realized how much she needed to hear those words until Batpaw had said them. It took an immense amount of pressure off of the tabby she-cat's shoulders, enough that she sighed softly into the night with relief. "Thanks, Batpaw." The sincerity in her mew was unmistakable. "I wonder if I'd be a good queen," the little cat whispered. "Maybe it's because I haven't had any real training yet, but I don't think I'd be very good at hunting or fighting. I've spent lots of time in the nursery, though."
She liked it. There was a warmth and safety there that she didn't necessarily feel in the apprentices' den—though having her siblings there (and now Batpaw) was sure to help with that. Would the other queens accept a loner-born she-cat among their ranks? Cloudypaw tried not to stress over this too much. What if she was the only one really thinking in terms of 'me' and 'them', instead of us?
I'm a LightningClan cat now. I should act happy to belong here. And she was; sometimes her joy and natural, kit-like curiosity was smothered under the weight of her anxiety over being in such a new, strange place. Of fitting in and making Firestar confident that she'd made the right choice to be a Clan-cat.
