The darker of the two siblings walked along side her brother who carried a plump newleaf mouse. Her golden eyes were downcast, she wanted to be the one to catch it, but she had been distracted by a small sparrow. She hadn't the skill yet to catch such a quick bird and well short. Her stumble resulted in a sharp cry as she went nose first into a tree root. Her brother laughed, which only added insult. He had in his jaw, careful not to puncture it with his laugh, a mouse. Knowing the hunting wouldn't be good in the area and their allowed time to be out without a mentor was coming to an end. Duskpaw decided to head back to camp without a catch of her own. And so the two siblings arrived together to see the camp in pleasant activity. Their mother had went back to her full warrior duties and the siblings rarely saw her. It caused a slight drift, especially between mother and daughter, she still wanted to be the center of her mother's attention. What neither of them knew was that Lionsong made it a habit to peak into the apprentice den to check on her darlings. She often nuzzled each of them before departing for her nest and curling up close beside her mate.
"Why don't we share my catch," He mumbled around his catch. Duskpaw's ears tilted toward her sibling's with a nod. She didn't realize how hungry she was until Dunepaw placed the mouse before her and nudge for her to take the first bite. She ate quickly, doing her best to leave a decent amount for her brother. Between them both the mouse was gone within a matter of moments. Her paw went to rub her chops clean as she let the meal settle. When ever she was inside the camp her guard fell quickly and she was distracted by her early meal and didn't notice the arrival of another cat until it was too late.
"Did you check to see if the elders had eaten?" The voice was gruff and both siblings quickly looked up to see the clan deputy,Meadowleaf ask the question. Dunepaw was at a lost for words, it was in that moment both siblings realized what had happened. "No..." She answered her, looking down at the bones of the prey. "You will need to see Lionstar because you broke the warrior code," She flicked his tail as a signal for both of them to follow him. Dunepaw remained rooted in his spot but Duskpaw urged him on as both headed toward Lionstar's den.
"Wait here, Lionstar will want to you b-," "No! Don't punish Dunepaw, I made him do it. I told him it was okay," Duskpaw was near frantic as she tried to protect her brother by taking the blame. Meadowleaf narrowed her eyes but gave a single nod, her attention turning to Dunepaw. "Is this true Dunepaw?" The younger tom nodded out of pure reaction rather then actually thinking about it. "Fair enough, Duskpaw wait here, Dunepaw go wait near the camp entrance," Meaadowleaf watched as Dunepaw dipped his head and retreated away. The deputy entered Lionstar's den. Duskpaw considered running away, heading into the forest for the evening. She couldn't bare a harsh punishment, but she also knew that if she didn't take it Dunepaw would. She had to protect her brother. He was her other half and as long as she had a pulse she would take care of him. Mother said it was her job. Dunepaw's bout with greencough juts a few moons ago had changed Duskpaw. Even if he would surpass her in size she'd always view him as that small little bundle of fur. Even if he grew to be a brute, she'd never be able to forget how scared she was of seeing him near death in Littletimber's den.
"He will be out here shortly," Meadowleaf's words broke Duskpaw out of her train of thought. She did the only thing she knew how to do, she put on a brave face. She nodded to Meadowleaf, put her head up and stopped her nervous twitch of her tail and waited.
