LIONSTAR
57 Moons. Leader of TreeClan
He thanked StarClan for the first hints of spring. The undeniably wretched freezing wind had finally ended, and the sun was tentatively warming up the valley. It was important to the golden warrior that Newleaf was started off right; that it started off in a place of optimism. And what was more optimistic than an apprenticeship ceremony? Dusk-kit, Skykit, Dunekit, Lionkit, Stonekit and Firekit were very ready to leave the nursery and give their poor mothers a break. He had spoken with Lionsong and Littletimber both, and they had each given the all-clear for Dunekit to stand beside his sister as an apprentice.
Unlike his other ceremonies, it was sunhigh when Lionstar jumped onto the Ancient Stump, calling the Clan together with his customary yowl. Watching the thin, ragged looking cats gather beneath the Ancient Stump, Lionstar nearly smiled with regret, feeling a deep melancholy over being unable to fix all of their problems as they occurred. But he couldn't control the weather. He couldn't control the seasons. And he couldn't flush the prey out of their burrows, no matter how he might try.
But there was a spark of curiosity in their eyes. A glimmer of their old selves. And that heartened him.
"Cats of TreeClan! Newleaf is finally upon us." Lionstar smiled, raising his head to the cool breeze that swept through TreeClan's camp, greeting it without fear or anger. "We should welcome in the new season with a few more apprentices, shouldn't we? Dusk-kit, Dunekit, Skykit, Stonekit, Firekit and Lionkit, step forward you six. It's time you were given mentors and joined your Clanmates in the apprentices' den." With so many names to get through, Lionstar withdrew a deep breath, and spoke in a loud, clear voice so that every cat could hear him without difficulty.
"From this day on, until you receive your warrior names, you will be known as Duskpaw, Dunepaw, Skypaw, Stonepaw, Firepaw and Lionpaw." Pinpointing the five other felines he had chosen for mentoring, Lionstar signaled them to step forward with a deliberate flick of his tail.
"Skyfall, Meadowleaf, Zephyrfang, Magpiewing and Lichenfrost. You have all shown yourselves to be exemplary warriors, and I entrust each of you to pass on all that you know to these apprentices. Skyfall will mentor Duskpaw, Meadowleaf will mentor Dunepaw, I will mentor Skypaw," He spared a brief glance at the gray kitten "Zephyrfang will mentor Stonepaw, Magpiewing will mentor Firepaw, and Lichenfrost will mentor Lionpaw."
Yes, he was playing favorites. But did any cat truly expect him not to mentor his deceased best friend's son? Lionstar felt no remorse over his decision as he strode to the edge of the Ancient Stump, jumped down, and went to touch noses with his apprentice. The others already followed suit, and the Clan began to chant their new names—the first few calls discombobulated by so many names, but the Clan quickly remembered the order they were announced in.
