Hazeheart's condition gave him unusual and sometimes ill-timed sleeping patterns. More often than not, he was awake when he should've been asleep, and asleep when he should've been awake. Fortunately for the plush tortoiseshell tom, the last pawful of moons had seen him being the warrior he'd always dreamed of; he hunted and patrolled with the best of them.

It was a fantastic confidence boost. He wasn't one to let it go to his head, though; and why should it? He was doing nothing more than what was expected of him. Having already had several small naps throughout the day, it didn't take much to rouse him from his slumber. The cold press of chilly silver-and-black fur was as good a wake-up call as any. Hazeheart glanced around, expecting to be wreathed in the familiar, comforting scents of Darkblaze and Brightfeather, his siblings, but was met with a different scent entirely.
"Smokefur?" He mewed, surprised. "Is everything okay?" She was in the warriors' den? Faintly, Hazeheart wondered if something had happened to the healer's den, to have her curled up with the other warriors. Maybe she was looking for me. He thought hopefully, the young warrior always up for a pleasant conversation with the she-cat. She'd been very kind to him over the years.

With a small yawn, Hazeheart looked out of the warriors' den. It was impossible to tell what time it was, with the way NightClan's camp was. Hadn't tonight been a Medicine Cat meeting? Oh StarClan, did I sleep through it all? Was it dawn? His siblings would've woken him if he'd slept in again, he was sure of it.

    Smokefur heard the voice of Hazeheart addressing her which let her know just who she had decided to share a nest with, and this knowledge caused her to let out and audible groan. She was on the verge of giving up, as the one cat she had decided to awaken with her unnecessary presence happened to be one of her most beloved clanmates. Who she had been helping with sleeping related issues. "I'm sorry Hazeheart..." She said as she sat up, exasperated and done with the entire season. She quickly buried her face in his fur with a huff and explained, "I'm cold and tired, and you warriors are warm and soft." It wasn't exactly a great explanation of the many intertwining reasons that had lead her to this very moment, but it covered the most important. She was cold. This weather was ridiculous. She is a medicine cat, you have to do what she says.

Hazeheart smiled. That was as good a reason as any for wanting to curl up in here. She was right; it was warm and soft in the warriors' den. He could see more than one cat inside the den that looked as if they might sleep until new leaf.
"That's quite alright, Smokefur. How did the meeting go?" Hazeheart patted her flank with the tip of his mottled tail, not minding the company at all. "Of course, you can tell me after you've rested." He didn't mean to keep her up; she probably would appreciate the chance to get some shuteye.

Thinking mildly that he would bring the healer something to eat, Hazeheart's head swiveled to look across the den opening to the fresh kill pile. Or, abysmally, the empty space that was supposed to be the kill pile. Hazeheart's spirits sank a little. They were lucky there weren't too many kits in the Clan now, Blackwolf's brood had reached apprenticeship—which meant more hunters for the Clan... But would it actually help?

He'd talk to Darkblaze and Brightfeather about it. Even if they had no answers for him, it would be nice to commiserate over the weather and the state of things.

    Smokefur grumbled around Hazeheart's fur when she was probed about the gathering, the noise was unintelligible and she realized she might actually have to shift the way she was laying to have this conversation. Ignoring the kind warriors offer to let her sleep she lifted her weary head with a groan, "The medicine cat gathering didn't happen, we couldn't even make it all the way across our territory." She answered clearly distressed as she buried her face in his fluff once more, soon there was more grumbling emitted from the warm ball they had constructed. Their minds seemed to wander to the same place as she thought about the hunger that plagued her, although when everyone in the clan was starving it wasn't a big stretch to imagine them thinking the same thoughts. She lifted her head slightly and moaned, "I guess I get to have sleep for dinner again tonight."

The young warrior's ears pinned back with concern. Couldn't make it to the meeting? What did that say about StarClan? With days like these spent with hungry bellies and vacant eyes, it was hard to keep faith. Quiet, perfectly aware that she might very well refuse to talk to him about this, Hazeheart asked curiously. "Does StarClan talk to you a lot?" His green-blue eyes were bright, eager for a sign of hope—for anything to prove that StarClan was still listening to them. Still cared about what happened to NightClan.
"Can they do anything about this leafbare?"

Hazeheart didn't know what he was expecting. Just something more than silence.

While he awaited her answer, the young warrior's stomach gurgled piteously, and he winced, hoping the sound would disturb the others. It wasn't likely to, though; the cats of NightClan had to get used to growling, aching bellies and sleepless nights when the hunger became too much to bear.
