The tom noticed that his own mentor was crouched and stepping lightly. So maybe the mouse was not a dream. He was hungry now, it had been a while since they left camp as well. Time seemed to fly when you were having fun, and that is exactly when Redpaw was doing. He liked the training, it was fun. His mentor was not as boring as some of the other apprentices made him out to be, and he could not wait until he told them that.

But when Eagletalon told him to try and catch it, he looked at his mentor questioningly. He pointed to his right though with his tail in an answer and he spoke quietly for his question. "Eagletalon, could I chase it to you? I don't feel comfortable with trying to get it on my own just yet." He voice his own worries about himself. He did not want to mess up catching the mouse and bringing back nothing to the camp after his training session. So, he waited a little bit until he started to stalk toward the mouse.

The firs thing he had done was made sure that he was upwind from the mouse so that it would not scent him. He was also making sure that he placed his paws carefully and quietly. He had not yet gotten a reply from his mentor, but he was still going to make sure that he chased it toward the older tom if he did not catch it himself. He was going to try first though. The tom stopped moving when he was the right distance from the mouse and he gathered his haunches to pounce.

The ginger tom pushed from the ground and he landed on mouse but not in the right spot to be able to catch it. The mouse slipped from his paws and Redpaw gave chase then. He changed the course of the running mouse so that it was soon headed towards Eagletalon. At least I tried.

    "Sure," Eagletalon had mewed when Redpaw had first expressed his worry of being unable to catch it. The heavily scarred warrior likened Redpaw's hesitation with his desire to succeed, and his desire to feed the Clan - both were good, it was a good thing that Redpaw had such drive. Getting into a crouched position, golden eyes made to follow the progress of his young apprentice, observing as the kitten made a decent pounce towards the mouse, but the timing had been a little rough - and Redpaw's claws failed to sink into the small prey.

Rather than let it go and allow his tail to hang down, discouraged, Redpaw instead began to chase the mouse towards Eagletalon, something that pleased him as well. Good, he didn't forget. It was not as though he viewed the ginger tom as being absentminded, it had more to do with the fact that missing a first catch could be distracting as well as damaging, but Redpaw hadn't let that catch him off guard. Maybe because he had expected to miss? Eagletalon could probe his mind on it later. Laying in weight, the StoneClan tom swiped out a claw and caught the mouse, delivering a swift bite to kill it. "Well done, Redpaw! I thank StarClan for the life of this mouse." Eagletalon sported a half-grin at his apprentice, wanting to make sure the younger tom knew to always give thanks for his kills - something he himself sometimes forgot or neglected to do so out of personal laziness.

The whole point of being a mentor, though, was training a cat full of the potential to be an even better warrior than you were.

Eagletalon gave the smaller feline a nudge with his shoulder, in a good mood with the progress they'd made today. "I think that's enough for today, Redpaw. Let's head home."
