Goldenflower sauntered into camp with a few rather juicy mice to add to the fresh kill pile, it was a successful hunt as always for the golden tom. He was rather grateful that this was a fact as he knew deep inside no matter how hard he worked he wasn’t much of a fighter, this was proved by the thrashing he had received from a certain scary dark cat during his time as an apprentice. He was more then grateful for his gift as without it he would have nothing to contribute to the clan, and he knew that not only for his sake but for his former mentors Cherrypool he had to be good at something. He felt he had to be the best at something as a matter of fact, she was an excellent teacher and he felt awful he was all she had to work with. He was soft, delicate, small and rather weak for a tom… or even a she-cat for that matter. That wasn’t all she had to deal with though, his love for a certain male medicine cat apprentice had proven even more work for the alabaster she-cat. So with all that in mind he knew he had to show the pay-off of her hard work somehow and he was pleased to show it in his hunting. Dropping one of the mice at the freshkill pile he took the other to the nursery figuring the kits and queens might need a scrap thrown their way. Poking his head in with the mouse he purred out softly, “Anyone hungry?”

Gustkit- - - For all his good intentions, Goldenflower should have been focused behind him rather than on the shadows of the nursery. Never one to sit still, Gustkit abandoned the shelter of his mother’s nest as soon as he woke up, his need to have something to do driving him from the warmth of Dovewing’s side. It had been a while since the open area of the camp had provided enough entertainment to last him the day, and it seemed with every passing sunrise, it occupied him for less and less time. Today was particularly harsh, for his siblings were all off somewhere and no one was in the mood to entertain a bored kit.
In a way, he reasoned with his conscience, the older tom had asked for it by approaching the nursery, which as far as he was concerned, was Gustkit’s domain. So, while the warrior busied himself with a nursery that might have been empty, the kit focused on trying to land on his target: the white tip of Goldenflower’s tail. Haunches wiggling in the air and tongue between his teeth, he crept forward with the haste of a kit inexperienced in the art of waiting. Bright eyes watched the tail for a moment longer before he let out a fierce battle cry and leapt, paws outstretched.- - -

Goldenflower let out a rather comical yip as his tail was pounced on by sharp kitten claws, dropping the mouse he had brought; he quickly spun around and brought his tail to his maw for a few tender licks. Having stopped the stinging sensation from his recent scratches he looked at Gustkit with wide eyes and said simply. “Owe. That was a fine pounce but did you have to hurt my poor tail?” Goldenflower would of course like to play it off like he was just playing with the kit like so many would, however if he was being truly honest he would say he wasn’t at all expecting the pounce to happen and the yip was completely genuine. His lack of fighting ability did extend to kits it seemed and as he wasn’t paying attention as he would be when hunting the kit had gotten the better of them. He would never admit that though and he knew if Cherrypool knew what had just transpired she would die just so she could roll over in her grave.

Gustkit- - - A triumphant shout rang through the clearing as his paws hit home, claws automatically unsheathing themselves and digging into the warrior’s tail. He’d done it! His face lit up with a grin, Windstrike’s yellow-green eyes bright in the wake of his success. Straightening up, he looked up at Goldenflower, smile barely fading as he met those wide eyes. Any regret he felt at causing the other tom pain was washed away an instant later when the praise reached his ears. He beamed and it seemed like his grin couldn’t stretch any wider. The warrior had said his pounce was good! A warrior! And it wasn’t his mother or father either, but a warrior who was under no such obligation to say it was good. Glee made him bounce up and down on his paws, and a kit’s hero-worship of any real warrior who would stop and talk to him made him speechless.
It did not take long, however, before words returned and his tongue remembered how to form words. ”Can I see your pounce, Goldenflower?” He asked, eager to see an example to try and copy. ”Please! I bet it’s really good, ‘cause you’re a warrior and all. Everyone’ll be so jealous when I tell them.” A snicker escaped him as he imagined the look on his siblings’ faces when the other kits heard that he got Goldenflower to show him how to pounce. Eyes fell on the discarded mouse, laying there forgotten. ”Maybe you can show me how you caught that, too!” - - -

Goldenflower was so pleased at the look in Gustkit’s eyes, it looked as if he was about to blow up with all the pride swelling inside him. The golden tom picked up a mouse and dropped it in front of his new little friend as he listened to the request to see one of his pounces. He fancied himself as a rather fine hunter and was relieved that he had asked for a pounce not some sort of battle move; if it wasn’t related to hunting he was going to flounder like a hopeless apprentice and be felled by the kit. “Eat up Gustkit and I’ll give you a little show.” He said as he started to back up and give himself a little distance to work, dropping low into a crouch he began to explain his methods. “Keep low, and keep your tail still. The key to figuring out how low you can go without making it more difficult and noisy is actually simple. Only go down as low as you can where you can get back up without any problems what so ever.” He said looking at the kit, “Don’t fight against yourself, your stance needs to be fluid.”

Gustkit- - - In all his excitement about tackling Goldenflower's tail, Gustkit had completely forgotten about the reason why the warrior might have been visiting the nursery, and though it wasn't unwelcome, the offering of a mouse caught him completely off guard. Bright eyes barely flicked downward to locate the piece of prey before they returned to the warrior before him, as the kit absently took a bite, far too fascinated by the prospect of being shown a hunting crouch to truly have any appetite. Only when the warrior made the bargain did he really become interested in the mouse at his paws, and he attacked it with a new fervor, barely chewing before swallowing in his attempt to eat as quickly as possible so Goldenflower would show him the move.
As the warrior backed up and lowered himself into a crouch, the kit barely managed to swallow his most recent bite before his jaw dropped in awe. He itched to try out the move on his own, and having taken a half step forward, the mouse discarded, he would have had the warrior not interrupted him. Ears flicked and he froze as he listened to the directions, carefully attentive to what the other tom was saying. "My turn now!" A grin followed the exclamation. When Goldenflower turned to look at him, Gustkit took that as his cue and moving away from the partially devoured rodent, he lowered himself into what he thought was a decent attempt at mimicking the warrior's crouch; in actually, it was far from it. The warrior's words rang in his ears. He had to keep low; he tried to keep his haunches and tail closer to the ground, but that put more of a strain on his legs than he was used to. He didn't want to get too close to the ground though, because Goldenflower had said that he should be able to get up without a lot of trouble. As he altered one part of his stance, concentration written all over his face, a different part changed as well; for example, when he tried to make himself more comfortable, he forgot about keeping his tail low, and it rose again, flicking behind him as he worked.
"Like this?" He glanced up at the warrior now, careful to remain still, even as the strain made his legs tremble slightly. But that didn't matter; it was easy to ignore in the grand scheme of things. He was doing it! Wait until he showed the others what he learned!- - -

Goldenflower purred at the excitement Gustkit showed at learning a hunting crouch from a warrior, he walked around examining his form purely for show. The golden pelted tom could see everything that was wrong without even having to move from his fixed location, he didn’t want the kit to feel like his flaws were that obvious though. “Keep your tail down.” He said kindly as he flicked the kits tail with his own, he then took another walk around the kit pretending to study him again before offering his next bit of advice. “Now try to stand up, let’s see how easy it is for you to get back to your paws.” He was sure it wouldn’t be easy at all; the way the kit was shaking he was ready to watch a bit of a struggle in the process of straightening his legs. “Remember what I said? If you can’t stand up without a problem you are too low.”

Gustkit- - - Gustkit froze as the warrior padded around him, keeping still as Goldenflower examined his posture. Only his head turned slightly, when the other tom walked out of his line of sight. Ears flicked at the first correction, and he lowered his tail with some surprise, turning back to look at the offending body part. He could have sworn it was down by his paws; when had it started flicking through the air again? With a small huff, he turned back to watch Goldenflower, making sure to keep his tail low to the ground.
It was at the warrior’s next instruction that he felt a little relief. His legs had been getting tired from the strain of holding the position for such a long time, for usually he crouched down for little more than a few moments, while he focused on his target, before leaping. Getting up, however, was harder than he expected. His muscles protested against the action, and his tail rose up again as he lost his concentration. Tongue held between his teeth, he managed to get himself into a standing position, legs feeling heavy. Gustkit sat, looking up at the warrior. ”I was too low, I think then,” He mused out loud. ”Do you guys really do that every day? That’s a lot of work!”- - -

Goldenflower was pleased to see the kit was listening and trying to correct his posture as best he could. It was also clear the kit was still learning how to control his body and how it all worked together, he had slight focus issues like all kits seemed to before a certain age but his attempt was admirable. “That’s about how low you need to be, and in all honesty it was pretty good.” He said with a huge smile, “Just practice going that low until it no longer hurts, trust me it gets a lot easier.” He promised as he head butted the kit softly so as not to topple him on his weakened legs, “So how about you show me your pounce now.” He suggested moving back to make some distance so he could observe, “From what you did to my tail I don’t think I need to show you anything, so let’s see what you’ve got.

Gustkit- - - He beamed at the praise, his yellow-green eyes lighting up with a brilliance only brought on by such an occurrence. Lips parted in a wide grin to reveal sharp kitten teeth, and he straightened his shoulders, holding his head up higher. Goldenflower, a warrior, thought that his hunting crouch was pretty good. He had a good crouch. Take that, Blazekit! It came out as a mental shout toward his brother, hardly lacking a bragging tone. Ha! I have a better hunting crouch than you! So caught up in this one-sided competition was he that he was unprepared for the friendly nudge, completely caught by surprise by the warrior’s head butt. Only unbalanced slightly, he stuck out a paw to the side to steady himself, grinning up at Goldenflower.
”Okay!” As the older tom backed up to observe, the kit rose to his paws, tail flicking lightly through the air. ”I’ve been working on it,” He told Goldenflower proudly, and added by way of explanation, ”It’s got to be better than Blazekit’s.” Complaining muscles fell back into the crouch as he lowered himself to the ground again, eyes focusing on a nearby pebble. With his tail in the air and lip held in his teeth, he lined himself up with his target, haunches wiggling in the air as he waited for a moment, imagining that it were something more interesting, like a mouse or rabbit. Claws unsheathed and with a fierce yowl, he uncoiled, springing forward with his forepaws landing squarely on his target. The grin on his face, which had been temporarily replaced by an expression of intense focus, returned with full force as he turned to face Goldenflower. ”Did you see that? I caught it!”- - -

Goldenflower was incredibly happy to get the opportunity to work directly with the upcoming apprentices of Lightning clan, almost jumping for joy at the idea that someday he would have an apprentice of his own to teach. He vowed to be as good a mentor as Cherrypool had been for him a long time ago, but he reaffirmed said vow as he helped Gustkit with his pounce. So watching with genuine interest in his eyes he waited for the kit to pounce, intense focus painted itself across Gustkit’s features as he dropped lower and wiggled his rear end waiting to go in for the kill. There was a kitten like yowl before the young cat launched and landed on his target, Goldenflower nodded in affirmation that it was a good pounce for such a young cat. “That was an excellent pounce!” He mewed excitedly as he moved closer and explained, “You were so accurate, right on target! The wail was unnecessary but terrifying all the same!”

Gustkit- - - It should have been impossible for the grin on his face to grow any wider, but it somehow managed to do so as his heart seemed like it would burst from all of the pride that overwhelmed any other emotion. Bright, yellow-green eyes gazed up at Goldenflower, ridiculously pleased at the nod the warrior gave him and the subsequent words. Small, striped paws removed themselves from the pebble, and he barely gave it a glance as he pranced over to stand before the warrior. ”My battle cry is scary, isn’t it?!” Part question, part exclamation, he offered an example almost as soon as the words had left his mouth, jaws parting as his take on a ferocious yowl split the air.
A moment later, jaws clicked shut, that smile still on his face. ”Now what?” Fearing the return of boredom, he glanced around camp, searching for anything else that might occupy his time and include the warrior before him. Goldenflower was nice, and because the other tom was a warrior, Gustkit wasn’t sure how much time he would have to spend with him. The kit would take what he could get, and if the warrior didn’t have anywhere to be now, then he wasn’t about to let him go. There was so much Goldenflower could tell him and show him! He would be so far ahead of his siblings once they became apprentices. Yellow-green eyes lit upon the partially eaten mouse lying not far away. ”Hey Goldenflower, do you think I could catch one of those?”- - -

Goldenflower giggled as another yowl left the kits maw, “Yes it is very scary.” Gustkits’ smile warmed his heart and he was glad he stopped to have some time with the kit. He wasn’t sure what was to happen next, he had free time still and didn’t want to just walk out on the kit of he had nothing pressing he needed to get done however the kits suggestion took him by surprise. “Catch a mouse?” He bit his lower lip as he thought about everything that would entail, there were no mice scurrying around camp, even if there had been they would be part of the fresh kill pile already with none left for the kit to try and hunt. So that meant leaving camp which seemed like a huge no-no. Redstar would have his pelt if he took out a kit to go hunting on a whim, so instead he quickly cooked up a counter proposition. “How about I hunt you instead?” He said with an evil smile finding its way to his maw.

Gustkit- - - The disappointment that had flickered across his eyes as Goldenflower considered his question – he knew that the longer the warrior thought about it, the more his chances of receiving a negative answer grew – disappeared when the other tom voiced his alternative suggestion. ”Alright, but you have to count to ten first and close your eyes!” A grin stretched across his features, mirroring that of Goldenflowers, and his tail lashed through the air as he bounced on his paws. ”You’ll never catch me!” He challenged, hesitating only for a moment after his declaration before speeding off.
Mind churning, he cast a quick glance around camp as he ran, paws pattering across the packed down dirt. Should he try to find a place to hide and make the warrior work to find him? Or should he just keep running around camp, using his speed to try and evade the older tom? If he followed through with the former, where would he hide? Because he did value his life, Rookfrost’s den was out of the question, and they had just been by the nursery. Gustkit doubted that the elders would appreciate such a disturbance, but the warriors’ or apprentices’ dens seemed way too obvious. Yellow-green eyes lit upon the one of the remaining spots, and a streak of daring flashed through him. Yes.
Abandoning any sense of reason or caution, the kit checked where Goldenflower was before directing his path toward Redstar’s den. The warrior would never think to look there! Upon reaching the little hollow, he slowed, poking his nose in briefly. Even in there, there was no real place to hide. If the warrior looked for him there, he was in plain sight. The young tom looked up, eyes falling upon the Hill Top, where Redstar addressed the clan. Nothing said he had to hide, and he would have a good vantage point from up there, even if he could clearly be seen. Beneath striped fur, muscles coiled and he bounded up to the top of the leader’s perch, unsheathed claws gripping the dirt as he pulled himself up. There he turned, only taking a moment to gaze at the camp in awe, before searching for his hunter. - - -

Goldenflower giggled as he sat down agreeing to Gustkit’s terms, “Okay I’ll close my eyes and count, now you better get going.” He said with the same evil little smile. So sitting there he closed his eyes and began to count as he listened to the small pattering of paws as the kit shot off to go try and find a good hiding place. For a few moments the older tom was afraid this was a bad idea, he could see the kit deciding no place in camp was good enough to hide and making his way out to hide just outside the camps borders… or farther. He did his best to quickly calm down, rationally reminding himself that there was no way the kit could go that far when he was only counting to ten. With that he realized his count was already up and he opened his eyes and quickly looked around, he didn’t feel like actually stalking the kit so he decided to instead lumber along towards the apprentices den to look first, once he saw it was empty he would move onto the warriors den. That was empty as well, so he took another look around camp for the kit wondering where exactly he could be.
