[smear:f3e471]Fallenleaf [/smear:f8c56a]
~~~~~~~~~~~
The pale she-cat was padding alone, among the rugged terrain that StoneClan was now supposed to call home. Her wounds since the battle had healed physically, but emotionally... It was harder for the she-cat to push the emotional scars away. Her pale gaze moved up to the sky, remembering her brother, Blackeagle, who'd lost his life. His had been the final StoneClan death of that battle. She could still remember the voice that commanded them to retreat
A few moons back, the StoneClan senior warrior would have been disgusted by her own thoughts. Now, however, Fallenleaf couldn't help but ask herself who they were. What was StoneClan? A group of cats who couldn't even defend their own home? Wasn't that a little pathetic. The voice of reason, the one that reminded her they had been a single Clan against the forces of two other Clans combined, tried desperately to make itself heard, but it was such a quiet voice. So quiet compared to the others. The betrayal stung deep for the old she-cat.
If only they had had help... If TreeClan and NightClan had spared but a patrol or two each... They might have been able to turn the battle around. But StoneClan had been left to fight alone. A bitterness hung within the older she-cat's eyes, her movements becoming stiff, almost angry.
Originally, Fallenleaf had left camp to hunt. She'd been with Hawkstar and a few others, but they had split up, hoping to cover a wider area. They would remain close enough to hear each other, in case someone needed help. The older she-cat, however, had completely given up on trying to find any prey. It was terribly unlike her usual self, but recently, she hadn't exactly been herself.
Her heavy, jarring steps were nearly painful, but she didn't seem to care. As she skirted the length of a cliff, the she-cat kept her head low, not exactly paying attention to where she was walking.
Suddenly, the ground beneath her paws seemed to just give out.
The cliffside crumbled away beneath her paws, rubble cascading down the cliffside, ricocheting off of the various ledges that jutted out from the heavily sloped ground. Her claws scraped the rock as she desperately tried to grab hold of something, but the earth would not stop moving beneath her paws. With a sharp caterwaul, the senior warrior was suddenly sent hurtling down the sloping, rocky terrain.
[smear:996600]Hawkstar[/smear:663300] ~~~~~~~~~~~~ The huge sand colored tom had been stalking up on a mouse he'd seen scuttle out of one of the rocks. He'd been closing in on it, all senses locked on the little brown creature, when a sharp wail ripped his gaze away from the now disappearing mouse. His first instinct was a sharp anger, and a determination to know who had just cost him that mouse. The image of Fallenleaf suddenly plunging off of the side of a cliff, however, had panic surging through him.
"Fallenleaf!" He bellowed, his paws immediately forcing him into a run. His paws struck the earth, but no matter how sharp a stone pricked at his paws, the stone-trained pads held strong. He moved as quickly as he could, his heart racing in his chest. "Fallenleaf!" He called again. As he neared the cliff, he forced himself into a skidding stop, his common sense ripping through his determination to get to the she-cat. The ground was cracked, obviously weak. With a hesitant step, the tom put his paw down, feeling the earth begin to give way beneath him.
He had to find another way. Skirting the edge for more stable ground, the StoneClan leader desperately tried to catch a glimpse of the senior warrior. Oh StarClan... Where is she? You can't take her from us now! He thought, panic seizing him.
Where IS she?!
[smear:dbb623]EAGLETALON![/smear:cc380a]
|
41 Moons // Tom // Senior Warrior // StoneClan Eagletalon's front paws were still dirty from where he'd just buried a finch, golden eyes and sandy ticked coat illuminated by the sunlight as he hovered just slightly beside Hawkstar, his heart having plummeted the second Fallenleaf had gone over. It had almost happened in slow motion, for the warrior who had seen enough dead loved ones to last him an entire lifetime and then some. Fallenleaf no! I can't keep losing cats! They had not been particularly close, the alabaster she-cat having been a few moons older than her, closer to Hawkstar's age if not further along, but he still considered her a part of his 'family'. After he'd lost Fallenleaf, his parents and his first apprentice, Eagletalon, so as not to self destruct and turn into a damaged, empty shell of his former self, he had latched onto his Clan as a whole, his love for them strengthening even after the heavy casualties they'd suffered at the claws of StormClan, despite the deaths ripping through him like the teeth of some monstrous dog.
Testing the cliffside just like Hawkstar had done, his eyes feverishly scanned the ground, backing up when it started to give way beneath his feet - thin ticked golden tail laying over his broader-shoulder brother's back, a subtle gesture that Hawkstar was to stand back. If the leader of StoneClan decided to hover at the edge longer then was safe, then Eagletalon would just have to pull him away by force - even if such actions got him a good clawing of the ears or a hefty blow to the side of the muzzle. "Let's find a way down - maybe she fell into a stream or something." Adrenaline screaming through the scarred warrior's veins, he looked to his brother, best friend and leader with sharp, calculating eyes, ready to run to the ends of the earth and back if it meant they could rescue their fallen friend. Even if she... Even if she had not survived the fall... To leave her body down there was unthinkable, and Eagletalon had no intention of doing so.
It had been impossible to uncover Fallingstar's body from the rocks after she'd been caught up in the rock-slide that ultimately claimed all nine of her lives, and Eagletalon's ivory needle-like claws gripped into the stable ground, shredding the grass and clovers under paw at the idea of something similar happening to their white warrior. No. Not on my watch, StarClan. You keep your greedy paws to yourselves, do you understand me? He'd had it with simply sitting back and mourning the loss of lives - if Fallenleaf was still alive, then at this point, Eagletalon would've fought demon himself to reach her - and one good look at Hawkstar and he knew his brother in all but blood would do the same.
Golden eyes scanned the circumferential area for a possible way down, gradually pivoting on sturdy back legs, edging his way closer towards the left side of the ridge when it showed the most promise. The cliff-edge seemed to go on forever! If he could just find where it sloped down...
r i p p e d e a r senior warrior, stoneclan Drawn by the yowl and the clatter of falling rocks, Rippedear rushed over to the noise only to hear Hawkstar and Eagletalon panting and leaning over the edge of the cliff. He rushed up behind them and peered down himself. "Who was it that fell?" he asked, heart pounding. He was not going to lose another cat to something that could be prevented. Curse RainClan and LightningClan -- foxdung LightningClan -- for what they did to StoneClan. Without waiting to hear who the fallen was, Rippedear padded to the right side, opposite of Eagletalon to try and find a sloped way down. While finding no slope, he did see a series of ledges that progressed down the side of the cliff, leading down the edge. "Over here!" he yowled, then jumped on to the first ledge. He scrabbled for a hold and almost shot over the other side, but he held on. He jumped down much in the same fashion from ledge to ledge, sending pebbles and rocks spraying down the mountain. Turning around to look back up, he saw the way up would be a much more difficult journey. How they could carry the fallen cat back, dead or alive, was a mystery to him, but he swore he would. "Who ever you are, Clanmate, I will find you and bring you back."
breathing in the chemicals wolfclaw
Wolfclaw bolted upright at the yowl pierced the air, the prey he was stalking utterly forgotten. The silver and black cat raced over to where Hawkstar, Eagletalon, and Rippedear were staring over the edge. Stepping carefully to the edge himself, he scanned the ground below, seeing nothing. The gathered cats split, searching for a way down. Rippedear called out, apparently finding some means to the bottom.
The deputy raced over, seeing the series of ledges. 'But will we be able to get back up? With an injured cat, or maybe a body?' Wolfclaw shook the thought from his mind, black ears pricked forward as he carefully hopped down, ledge to ledge, massive paws almost too big for some of the smaller ledges. He moved quickly, but carefully, forgoing the last few ledges, instead hopping straight to the ground, landing heavily.
He looked back to Rippedear, who looked up at the path down with a bit of hesitation, no doubt thinking similar thoughts to what Wolfclaw had at the top. "Come on. Let's go." He flicked his tail as an indication to follow, bounding off in search of the cat who had fallen. He just hoped they would find the victim before it was too late. 'StarClan, please. Don't take another from us'.
[smear:996600]Hawkstar[/smear:663300] ~~~~~~~~~
The huge sand-colored tabby stood frozen at the edge for a moment, until his brother, Eagletalon coaxed him away from the edge. If it had given way beneath Fallenleaf, it would only be a matter of time before it gave way beneath him. He was much bigger than the older she-cat. Pulling himself out of his daze, Hawkstar glanced to his left, and to his right, noting how both Eagletalon and Rippedear were searching for a way down. When Rippedear called out to them, Hawkstar's ears shot up. "Eagletalon!" He called, before bounding towards where Rippedear and Wolfclaw were already making their way down.
Staring at the precarious little ledges for a moment, the massive StoneClan leader flexed his claws as he took a steadying breath. I have to get to Fallenleaf. Flattening his ears, the sand colored tom started down the slope, ensuring his stance on the ledges was balanced before he dared take another step. His slower speed was understandable, however, for such a large, broad shouldered tom wasn't exactly designed for this type of escapade down a cliffside.
Taking the final leap, the tom landed beside his deputy, flicking his tail and telling the group to fall in behind him. "Single file. Follow me. I have eight lives to lose, you all have one." He spoke, his voice heavy and serious, partly due to the severity of the situation, partly due to the memory of losing a life. Even so, Hawkstar would give up all eight of his remaining lives before he lost one more of his Clanmates to this mountain.
Taking careful steps, large paws tested the terrain before him. If he made it across, then the terrain should be able to hold the weight of the others. He parted his jaws, trying to catch a scent of the she-cat who had fallen. All he could find, however, was the scent of the mountains, the rocks.
Suddenly, somewhere along the course, the unmistakeable scent of blood slammed into him, causing his ears to flatten on his skull. "Fallenleaf!" He half-cried, half hissed, his pace picking up as the fallen rocks came into view. Examining the scene carefully, the tom flicked his ear, ordering the rest of his mini rescue patrol. "Move the rocks away from her. She's here somewhere, but be careful."
His large paws hauled the stone rubble away as Hawkstar searched desperately for their fallen Clanmate. Time seemed to drag on forever, with no progress made. And then, as Hawkstar pulled a rock away, he spotted pale white fur, stained gray and red. "She's over here!" He hissed, quickly unburying her with the help of others. There was a heaviness in his heart as he gazed upon the scene. Fallenleaf lay on her left side, bleeding from anywhere that was possible. The sharp rocks had pierced her skin wherever possible, leaving her usually pale coat dark and matted with blood. Her left foreleg was twisted at an odd angle, and Hawkstar immediately thought the worst. By the looks of it, she must had wrenched her shoulder, possibly even broken a bone in that leg.
The outcome didn't look good. As he glanced at his Clanmates, he took a careful step forward, touching his nose to her pelt. [smear:f3e471]Fallenleaf [/smear:f8c56a] ~~~~~~~~~
The pale she-cat lay barely conscious, unaware of where she was. Everything hurt, leaving her incapable of moving. Even her breathing was shallow, almost invisible. It hurt to breathe. Her mouth was agape, and she could taste blood in her mouth, scent it everywhere. She tried to wonder who was hurt, what had happened, but rational thought seemed impossible to come by.
A sudden, tiny pressure was applied to her side, and a groan escaped her as pain lanced through her body. Her eyes flashed open, and she tried to reach out, to swat away whatever it was causing her pain, but an even greater amount of pain caused her eyes to roll back in her head, leaving her fighting for consciousness once more. She was aware of voices around her, hissing quietly, desperately.
"She's alive! Someone get her on my back! We need to get her out of here, the terrain could give out at any moment." She didn't recognize the voice, couldn't comprehend what it was saying, her mind so fuzzy with all her pain. The last thing she remembered was trying to take a deep breath, before falling unconscious beneath the radiating pain that shot through her body, originating in her ribcage.
[smear:dbb623]EAGLETALON![/smear:cc380a]
41 Moons // Tom // Senior Warrior // StoneClan Eagletalon's stomach made a sickening lurch, potent images of Fallingstar's last moments having flashed before burning golden eyes with no warning, momentarily blinding the tom to the scene before him. Fallingstar. The scarred StoneClanner dug his claws into the foreign soil as though to grasp ahold of his surroundings, staring at the broken body of Fallenleaf, horror coursing through his veins as though he'd inhaled some unhealthy substance - the spell finally broken when Hawkstar spoke reason.
Flicking his tail, the sand-hued warrior started forward, approaching the unconscious Clanmate with a grim tightening of his jaw, hard enough to make his teeth hurt as he thought how best to comply with Hawkstar's request, knowing the broader-shouldered tom would be able to carry the she-cat back. "I'll grab her scruff, someone get her legs." Mewing curtly, his words sounding stiff and serious as his own memories tormented him, Eagletalon gently rasped a tongue over Fallenleaf's ear, feeling an foreboding mixture of rock dust and blood when he did so. Don't worry, Fallenleaf. We'll get you back to camp and then Ivypaw will fix you. You won't die here.
He was grateful the senior warrior was unconscious, grateful that she would not have to be aware of the pain it was going to cause her when she was moved, the tom's teeth clamping around the dirty, bloodied scruff to have a more secure hold. Trusting either Wolfclaw or Rippedear to help support the other end, Eagletalon made a careful step towards Hawkstar, trying to avoid any sharp protruding rocks that might cause her unnecessary further damage. Whatever you do, don't drop her. Sharp eyes roved to their corners, meeting the gazes of his fellow Clanmates, united in their efforts to rescue one of their own. With a grunt of effort, Eagletalon was able to lift Fallenleaf's upper body onto their leader's back, her front paws draped partially over her shoulder.
The scents and the sights and the memories were all still wreaking havoc upon his mind, visible in the way his skin quivered beneath his pelt, an expression of solemnity not usually present on Eagletalon's face was there now. He couldn't quite shake it, the urge to scream and scream and scream. After this moment, when Fallenleaf survived, he was going to ask Hawkstar if he might place a ban or pass a law that would not allow Queens to name their kits 'falling' 'fallen' or anything similar - that prefix had become like a death sentence for the Clan found amongst the stones.
He had never been quite so superstitious, but then again, he'd never seen such horrendously bad luck in his entire life happen in such quick succession.
r i p p e d e a r senior warrior, stoneclan Rippedear flicked Eagletalon's shoulder with his tail, attempting to lend a small amount of comfort to the tom. Anxiety practically poured out of the warrior, and Rippedear hoped that he wasn't thinking of Fallenstar at the moment. They all needed to focus on the cat in front of them.
Rippedear grunted, securing the least affected portion of Fallenleaf's hind legs in his mouth. Iron and salt filled his mouth as he gripped her blood soaked fur. He almost let go at the taste, memories of the battle filling his head. He would have shaken his head to clear his brain, but doing so would have rattled the battered she-cat more than she needed.
Following Eagletalon, Rippedear navigated carefully to their leader and did his best to not jostle the feline in his--their care. He did have to wonder, though, glancing back up at the ledges that brought them down, how they were going to get Fallenleaf back up the cliff face.
a silver lining sometimes isn't enough to make some wrongs seem right 'Single file. Follow me. I have eight lives to lose, you all have one.' Wolfclaw stood aside and let Hawkstar take the lead, waiting until Eagletalon and Rippedear passed before moving, bringing up the rear of the patrol. Their hunting trip was over, and now they were perched on the very border between life and death for one of their own.
A pile of shattered stone heralded their arrival at the fall, and the group quickly began searching the rubble. 'She's over here!' Wolfclaw, having been the furthest away searching, arrived at Fallenleaf's side last. He made it in time to hear the soft groan that Hawkstar's gentle touch had elicited, and a tiny spark of hope lighted. Working with Eagletalon and Rippedear, the bulky silver and black tom helped support the she-cat's hindlegs as the trio lifted her onto their leader's back.
The entire situation was tense, and no one dared voice the concerns that were certainly on everyone's minds. Would she live? Would she even make to their camp? How were they supposed to get her back up the cliff face? Once Fallenleaf was securely upon Hawkstar's back, Wolfclaw remained nearby, his bulky shoulder pressed gently against the she-cat's hindquarter, there to support her should she begin to slip.
His golden-green gaze flicked to first Rippedear, then Eagletalon, then toward Hawkstar's face. His position toward Hawkstar's midsection, supporting Fallenleaf gently, prevented him from meeting the gaze of the sandy tom. Still, his gaze fixed upon the part of the StoneClan leader's face that was visible, silently waiting for their next moves.
[smear:996600]Hawkstar[/smear:663300] ~~~~~~~~~
The great sand colored tom's teeth were pressed tight against each other as his amber eyes gazed worriedly at the three toms accompanying him. They moved to Fallenleaf's side, obeying the suggestion he had given them, preparing to lift the battered senior warrior onto his back. He feared that moving the damaged she-cat might only succeed in further harming her, but he knew that they couldn't just leave her where she was. For StarClan's sake, she was still alive. Lowering his huge frame, the StoneClan leader tried to make himself as small as he could. He was trying to diminish as much of the moving of the she-cat as he could. Working together Wolfclaw, Eagletalon and Rippedear managed to shift Fallenleaf onto his back. He could feel the weight of her unconscious body on his back, adding to the weight he already carried on a day to day basis.
With a heavy exhale, the sandy tom gave a mighty push with his legs, careful to rise at an even pace. One shift might cause Fallenleaf to slip from his back. One slip could be disastrous. Not wanting to dwell on the possibility of slipping, the StoneClan tom shifted slightly, testing the new weight distribution. He felt someone behind him, ready to catch the she-cat should she begin to slip, and suddenly he felt... More reassured. Perhaps they would successfully pull the she-cat out after all.
He would never admit it, but there had been doubts in his mind. The clamber down the cliff hadn't been an easy one, and now they had a bod- She's still alive. The leader found himself snarling in his mind. Now they had an unconscious Clanmate to pull out of there. This would be no easy task. Glancing at the Clanmates he could see, the tom nodded his head, now standing as comfortably as he could with Fallenleaf on his back. "Good work everyone. Now... Let's get ourselves out of here. Safely." He told them, before taking the first tentative step forward.
It was different, walking with another on your back. The effort needed to move was considerably more, and the whole distribution of weight was thrown off. She didn't shift like the rest of his bulk did. She stayed glued to him, unmoving. It was... Unnerving, to say the least. Forcing himself to concentrate on each step, and not the eerie stillness of Fallenleaf, the tom pushed forth, taking another step.
The familiar brush of fur was at his shoulder, and Hawkstar knew his brother was at his side. He could scent the other tom, and feel his own sturdy shoulder, aiding in taking some weight whenever it was necessary. The process was slow, seeming to take an eternity. Hawkstar's steps weren't as sure as they normally were, his claws scraping at the rock, trying to grab a hold of anything that would hold his weight. He was glad for the presence of the other toms, for he felt as though he might not be able to make it up without their support. Whenever Fallenleaf's weight began to slip, one of them was there to gently push her back into position. Whenever he lost his footing and staggered slightly, they were all there to catch him and re-stabilize him. No matter how hard it might be, Hawkstar's determination remained.
It felt as though a millennium had gone by by the time the four toms scrabbled over the top of the cliff. Hawkstar's breathing was ragged by this point, and he was leaning rather heavily on the offered shoulders. His leg muscles were beginning to scream at him, desperately wondering what kind of strain he was putting them under. But they'd made it. There wasn't much further to go. Exhaustion beginning to take hold, the StoneClan leader managed to mumble something, hoping that one of them would hear him. "We.... We're almost there... J-Just a little further... We have to... To get her to Ivypaw..."
