Leafbare was as harsh as it always was. What with the greencough going around and what not. Even still, Boneshadow had just finished his daily meditations when he managed to unintentionally pick up a foul scent. Rather than investigate alone, Boneshadow made his way back towards the campgrounds to grab a fellow warrior or two and maybe some apprentices to go on a patrol with him.
Boneshadow trotted his way into the camp, nodding towards an Elder that was strolling about a little early, and heading towards the Warriors den to see those who were already up. "I've picked up a nasty scent in our territory, I'd like one of you to come with me to check it out.
Halfmask had been sleeping a bit later than she normally did, but stirred when Boneshadow entered the den. She nodded and volunteered herself to go with him on the patrol. She stood and stretched, and scratches at her nose momentarily. "I'm ready to go when you are" she told the Deputy. The two of them set towards the Apprentices Den. Boneshadow stooped into the den and spoke. "Frogpaw, Grimpaw, come with us. We're going to investigate something." The two apprentices got up simultaenously and followed behind as Boneshadow and Halfmask made their way out of the camp.
Boneshadow picked up the foul stench with ease. It was now more noticeable since he was actively looking for it. Halfmask smelled it too, as did the two apprentices. "We're going to find out what that is, and report it to Ravenstar." Boneshadow and the others began to actively hunt the trail of the foul odor and soon came to a clearing where they lost the scent momentarily. It was Frogpaw however who picked up the scent again and lead the way momentarily.
As everyone picked back up on the smell, Boneshadow began to think. It was obviously an animal of some sort, that much he could tell from the scent. But he wasn't entirely sure of what it was. Hopefully not prey, for it smelled quite horrid and would surely be inedible.
The patrol group stopped for a moment. The birds that had been chirping moments before had ceased to do so, and had all flown away in a flutter of feathers. The smell was also exceptionally strong here. Boneshadow's tail twitched as they all heard a low growling noise. Grimpaw looked in an off direction. "What's that over there?" He began to take a step, but Boneshadow cut him off. "Don't move." Grimpaw froze, but eyed Boneshadow curiously.
Sudden movement set off alarms in the cats heads. A huge figure of a cat had jumped into view, and was charging towards the two apprentices with an obvious intent to kill. Boneshadow and Halfmask hastily blocked the way, only to be batted to the side effortlessly. A huge cat, or rather, a lynx, had decided it was lunch time. Frogpaw and Grimpaw turned tail and ran, but the lynx was coming up fast. Boneshadow had gotten back to his feet, and was charging after, and leaped to bite the lynx on the tip of the tail.
The large monster-cat was furious now, and turned to bat at Boneshadow with a large paw, claws fully extended. Boneshadow was tossed aside, and fell onto the ground. He struggled to get up, and as he looked, the lynx had turned its attention towards him, rather than the two apprentices. Boneshadow knew that was a good thing for the apprentices. But a bad thing for him. Halfmask had gotten up by now, and rushed over in an attempt to help. Boneshadow, for the first time in his life, raised his voice and yelled at the other cats to "run back to camp as fast as you possibly can."
They didn't need to be told twice. Halfmask, Frogpaw, and Grimpaw all turned and ran in the direction they knew to be home. Boneshadow did too, though the lynx effortlessly caught up with him and swatted at him again, causing Boneshadow to be sent in the opposite direction. The lynx turned to follow-up on its attack just in time to have Boneshadow latch himself to its face, and begin to claw at its eyes frantically. Big mistake, the lynx opened its mouth and bit down on Boneshadow's stomach, effectively ending the NightClan deputy's life with little effort.
