The queens at the nursery had warned him multiple times of the dangers of running water; while the warriors of his clan were well known for their ability to swim, this was not an inborn skill and would take plenty of training to perfect. Flashkit was a curious sort, and over-sure of his own abilities as many kits were, but he wasn’t particularly dense and knew to stay well away from the River when out on his little explorations of the camp. Over the last few weeks his ma had been giving him more leniency, allowing him to explore the area immediately surrounding the den, though he was still forbidden to set foot outside of the camp itself, and Flash had been taking full advantage of those privileges.

Leaf fall was well and truly here, and some days brought a bitter wind that chilled him in his fur, but there were still occasional days were the weather was almost pleasant. While the weak autumn sun shone down and leant a little warmth to his tiny body, Flashkit considered the young tree in front of him. There weren’t many of them in Rain territory, and this one didn’t reach up too far from the ground, but it seemed big and exciting enough to a young mind... he could probably climb the whole thing in one try, if he really wanted to.

So it was with some effort that the tom kit started to haul himself up the trunk, fumbling for a hold on the bark and clinging on with claws unsheathed, slowly at first but steadily gaining confidence until he had finally scrambled into the top branches. Satisfaction swelled in his chest momentarily as he looked about from his fine new vantage point, but then his belly lurched up to meet it as he looked back to the ground. Flash slowly lowered himself to his belly after that, claws digging into the bark for balance, and waited for his heart to settle back to its normal pace. It was plenty interesting up here – perhaps he’d stay for just a few more minutes...

If I stay here any longer, I'm going to turn into a kittypet. Figuring himself to be 'inside' long enough, Russetkit made a break for the rest of the RainClan camp, breaking free of his mother Brookrun and the nursery, the gray she-cat watching with weary eyes as her ruddy kitten scurried away. Alright, so there were obviously no twolegs here, but Russetkit had heard of kittypets before, from some of the elders - and apparently they stayed inside all day and were never let outside, grew fat and lazy and had no desire to do anything.
That sounded like a fate worse than death to a tom like Russetkit.

With all the pride a future-warrior could hold for his own lifestyle and a wild cat's dignity, the red apprentice-to-be glanced around, emerald eyes gleaming, for someone or something to amuse him this evening. Flashkit! Spotting the ginger and white kitten, Russetkit loped forward on his long red legs to stand in front of him, purring.
"What're you doing?" he mewed, ears flicking to catch the sound of their Clanmates going about their day around them.
To a cat who had explored every inch of RainClan's camp, plus the surrounding area, and had even wandered on a few occasions as far as StarClan's Claws, the stump Flashkit had fancied climbing was a bit of a bore, but Russetkit supposed he could understand the attraction. Getting any sort of vantage point over the whole Clan was usually a good idea - it would make for a great look-out perch, when they weren't doing what they were supposed to, they would be able to spot an adult cat coming before it was too late.
