Lionstep
He could remember the first time Sagefur had brought him here to teach him how to climb. Somewhere along the sturdy branches of the Great Maple, were marks that had been made by his claws and his claws alone, overlapping that of countless others - the enormous sugar maple having outlasted them all. Lionstep let out a small amused purr, swaying his tail back and forth against the leaf-covered ground, his senses filled with smells of leaf-mold, a crisp autumn breeze, and the sound of creatures scurrying to and fro in preparations for winter. He had hunted thrice for the Clan already, and hadn't yet been assigned a border patrol, so Lionstep was taking Sagefur's suggestion and relaxing for a little while. Alright, so Sagefur had suggested that he actually interact with his Clanmates about anything that wasn't work, but Lionstep was starting with kitten-steps.
No reason to jump into the deep end so soon.
Having found a sunny spot that illuminated the brilliant red and golden leaves scattered around the base of the Great Maple, Lionstep sauntered over, content with just relaxing, his guard successfully lowered along with his body. The magnificent golden-furred tom closed his eyes, letting the sun warm him like a mother's gentle touch, very nearly dozing off...

Lionsong
I will stand by you I will help you through When you've done all you can do.
---------------------------------------------- Cougarflight ruined my hunt again!
Those were the words the replayed in Lionsong's head for the hundredth of time. Her heart sank, she had just returned from a border patrol and wasn't even three minutes before she turned around and headed out again. She felt guilty for her sister's mistake and thus she wanted to make it up to the clan by fixing it. She found herself wandering toward the maple tree, the sweet scent allured her as she graceful clung to the tree, climbing up it with expert ease.
Once in a limb she found herself in a peaceful state, the mess of worrying about her sister long gone. She ventured out further and slumped down, one leg dangling off the edge of the branch. She sighed heavily, the chirping of a bird caught her attention. She moved up to a more prone position, her head held up high as she flushed a little, she was always nervous before she sang.
Taking in a big breath of air and exhaling she calmed her nerves before letting out a little tune. The tune it's self was simple but beautiful, it cleared her head and calmed her, singing was her joy. After her little tune she sang it again, but this time she stopped, down below her was movement but she didn't know who it was, she froze, surely they heard her singing?

Lionstep
What was that?
Just as his consciousness had drifted into the realm of naptime, a beautiful series of notes no bird could produce rocked his consciousness back down to earth. Lionstep's golden eyes snapped open, the muscular golden tom glancing upward instinctively, expression the epitome of surprise. Why hadn't I scented her earlier? That was the question he should've been asking himself, not the one he blurted out in his bemusement;
"Was that you singing?" It was kind of a dumb question. Obviously there were no such birds - at least no bird he'd ever heard before - that could produce a tune like that! Rather than stay in his curled up position, with his overly-large paws tucked up underneath his body, Lionstep was up on his feet in an instant, tail held level with the ground as he tilted his head back to get a better look at her. He'd heard of Lionsong's singing technique before, but he'd more or less assumed it was a made up or far-fetched tale. Cats didn't sing. And not in trees.
Well...it was the first time Lionstep had been wrong twice in a long time.

---------------------------------------------- Was that you singing?
Lionsong looked down below her to see Lionstep, a tom-cat that shared part of her name. She hardly knew him since well he was older than herself and she hardly socialized outside of keeping her sister in check, however she was polite and effortlessly got down from the tree limb she was perched on, to stood in front of him, a good head shorter than the older warrior, giving a respectful nod of her head to him.
"Well I could lie and say it wasn't me, but I doubt you could sing.." She said rather curtly, it was one thing to sing it was an entirely different thing to be caught. Part of her the she-cat that was nervous about anyone hearing her sing wanted to tear his ears right from the base and leave him bleeding, but the other half was amused that he heard her, but Lionsong wasn't yet sure which half was going to win.
"Now I know you're not stupid or anything, so I assume now you're going to tell the whole Clan you heard me sing...count yourself lucky you still have ears." She said rather rudely and considering the situation it was slightly expect on Lionsong, a little out of character yes but still expected.
"Now what in StarClan's name are you doing out here?" She asked harshly, kneading the ground with her claws unsheathed.

Lionstep
Used to being treated with respect, Lionsong's abrasive tone caught him by surprise, and his ears momentarily folded against his golden skull in a look of obvious offense - but common sense caught up with him. "Well if you know I'm not stupid, then you should also know I'm not a snitch." He retorted, wrapping his tail around his paws as he sat. Not like anyone would believe me even if I DID go telling the whole Clan about it. He wasn't some apprentice who didn't know any better, not to mention he wasn't that inconsiderate of the feelings of others. If Lionsong had wanted to tell everyone she could sing, she would've done so by now.
Upon being asked what he was doing here, it was Lionstep's turn to act somewhat uncomfortable. Napping sounded like something an elder would say, so Lionstep gave a nonchalant if not entirely stupid answer;
"Just getting some fresh air." You live outside, idiot. When are you NOT getting fresh air? Ignoring his inner critic, Lionstep met Lionsong's gaze, doing his best in these unusual circumstances to socialize like Sagefur wanted him to. He was a bit out of practice, but at least now he couldn't say not for lack of trying.

Lionsong
I will stand by you I will help you through When you've done all you can do.
---------------------------------------------- His reaction made a little smirk grow on Lionsong's face as her eyes narrowed and looked him up. He was well built and judging by his size he could easily take her out, flicking her ear quickly she scolded herself mentally for thinking of Lionstep as a enemy instead of a clanmate! He however eased up a little but sitting down and curling his tail neatly around his paws.
Lionsong took up a similar posture but taking a few steps back and lazily laying down on her side, however he upper part of her shoulder and head kept upright, she easily kept him in sight, she trusted him like she ought to since he was a clanmate, but even if he claimed he wasn't a snitch, the little tidbit of her life would cost him parts of his fur he even dare to blackmail her with it.
His claim to be getting fresh air brought forward a large right right laugh from Lionsong. She laughed so hard she begun to purr in amusement. "Getting fresh air?! Are you some kitty-pet?" She mocked him playfully, trying and failing to contain her laughter, however she felt like she was disrespecting him and forced herself to stop, causing a few snorts which brought a faint embarrassed flush to her face. "Why not admit you were just coming out here to nap? That's what I was going to before you opened your big fat mouth about my singing." She regarded again this time a little amused snapping in her voice.

Lionstep
Her laughter made him flush beneath his pelt, but he didn't react with any kind of defensive words, instead glancing up to the treetops as though it didn't bother him - but her speaking brought his attention back to the tabby she-cat. "Do you always sing before you take a nap?" He retorted, as if implying she was a bit on the strange side because of this. Though Lionstep wasn't usually prone to starting verbal trouble with his Clanmates, he was by no means a fuzzy golden pushover. Especially not in front of cats younger than him.
Lionstep's upright nature kept him sitting politely, an almost military attitude about this sturdy young lion of a tom, his large paws gently sheathing and unsheathing his claws in a light kneading of the grass beneath them, tail giving an occasional twitch behind him. "Cougarflight's your sister, isn't she?" He added as an afterthought. Lionstep wasn't about to badmouth the other cat, he was simply bringing up the subject, wanting to make sure he had the familial connections correct. The two were fairly opposites in personality and abilities, so it was easy to assume they weren't related at all.

Lionsong
I will stand by you I will help you through When you've done all you can do.
---------------------------------------------- Do you always sing before your naps?
His question made her think, she did sing a lot, normally with the safety of being alone, minus the few prey animals the really didn't mean much to her. Lionstep's question brought a pleased smiled to herself, she sang a lot and she enjoyed it. However she wasn't about to sing to him for any reason, but she thought happily about all the times she sang, they were peaceful and relaxing times.
Lionsong returned her attention to Lionstep's posture, it was just to plainly put it ridged and rather annoying. She was just as formal in the right setting but come on Lionstep! She thought to herself, he was just to uptight. With a slight frown to relaxed herself more, trying to get him to copy her. She sunk down her shoulders, which made a little purr wiggle out of her maw, her tail moved to a lazy state beside her legs.
"Cougarflight's your sister, isn't she?"
Her relaxed state grew it's own wings and flew off, she tensed up at the mention of her sister. Was he about to complain, she couldn't take that not when she wanted to get away from it. She already left camp with the idea to hunt and make up for her sister's mistakes. However the lull of a nap called her away, she even had signed herself up to go on the dusk patrol in place of Cougarflight. A heavy sigh left her maw as she looked up at him, moving to sit now, her own posture ridged, mimicking him now.
"Yes Cougarflight is my sister. Yes I know she can have her head in the clouds, I'm sorry if she messed up your border patrol or hunt. I'll make up for it no worries. I promised to have a talk with her also, maybe she won't do it again, but I can't promise anything. Please don't be upset with her." Lionsong spoke in a monotone voice, the same speech she gave countless times to cat in her clan. She had perfected that same speech for the past three moons, it was almost like hitting replay to a little recorder in her head. Part of her hated that fact she had to say that speech so many times, however she was in a way protecting her sister from the blunt of everyone's annoyance.

Lionstep At last the dots connected, and Lionstep understood her fluxuating moods. The mere mention of Cougarflight sent this she-cat into a state of tired apology, the sister having to constantly make up where Cougarflight fell short. Not having any siblings, Lionstep couldn't exactly understand, but he was sympathetic nonetheless. "I wasn't going to say anything negative," he replied, looking at her with an expression that was non-confrontational, only honest. "I was only wondering if the two of you were related - you're a bit opposite in personality, that's why I asked." He may have first caught her up in a tree, but Lionsong was obviously a thousand times more grounded than her sister. Heck, StarClan was closer to the ground than Cougarflight was. That she-cat must've been a piece of work to train! It was a wonder their Clan leader hadn't suggested she go back to being an apprentice and fill her head with a bit more than daydreams, hopefully the second time around would allow more things to sink in.
Speaking of apprentices...
For some unknown reason, the words 'Cougarflight' and 'Apprentice' connected in his brain somewhere to create a rather obnoxious and entirely insane idea of his. Lionstep was dying for his own apprentice, right? Obviously if their Clan leader had thought he was worthy of one, he would've been given one by now, right? ....So in an effort to prove himself, what if he did he impossible?
What if he actually taught Cougarflight to hunt successfully, fight successfully, and generally start picking up the slack she was piling onto her sister day in and day out?
....Lionstep smiled.
He was either a genius, or a complete and total nutjob for thinking this.

---------------------------------------------- A very visible sigh and relax looked covered all of Lionsong, he wasn't going to freak out about her sister, what a relief. Happily she allowed herself the satisfaction of knowing he wasn't going to freak, that put an entire new feel to her mood. Lazily she returned to her lay down position, but kept her attention on Lionstep. Half a yawn left her mouth, she tired her best not to let it show to much, wasn't going to do her any good if she fell asleep while talking with another warrior.
"I know Cougarflight can be a little random and sometimes annoying, but she is still my sister and I will do anything to protect her. Now if you do have a problem with her in the future come to me and not Distantstar, I much rather handle it myself." Lionsong spoke, this time her voice absent of any harsh words or sarcasm, she was honestly asking him to not take any frustrations with Cougarflight to Distantstar, she wasn't sure if she'd be able to protect her sister from their leader.

LIONSTEP Though it was true, Cougarflight was more of a burden than a help to her Clanmates, and could even be a liability what with her spaciness and how much she lacked as a warrior, but Lionstep wasn't the kind of cat to badmouth another. Cougarflight was part of TreeClan, and unless she turned traitor and left for RainClan or something, his opinion of the dreamy she-cat wasn't going to change or somehow become overly negative. "Actually," started the TreeClan deputy, his voice resonating out of his chest with an inquisitive note attached to the end of it, "Would you be interested in helping me train your sister? It's true she's not the best fighter or the best hunter - I know she's well past her apprenticeship days, but I think the extra lessons will do her some good." Call me painfully optimistic, but there's no such thing as an untrainable warrior unless that warrior is suffering from some sort of disability or mental illness. As far as he could tell, Cougarflight was suffering from neither, just an enormous case of fleeting attention span and lackluster hunting and fighting skills as a result.
Lionsong might call him crazy for even suggesting this, but it really said a lot about his character. Being the newly appointed deputy as well as the mentor to Dawnpaw meant that he was most certainly a cat who didn't have a great deal of leisure time, but he was offering to take an hour or two out of his busy schedule to help out Cougarflight, and in turn, help out Lionsong. Of course his motives weren't just for the good of those two cats in particular; as the deputy of TreeClan, the golden-furred warrior couldn't sit idly by while Cougarflight continued dreaming her way through life and not contributing her fair share to the Clan.
This was likely going to be a year-long project, Lionstep realized, blinking his deep amber eyes, but Lionstep was, if anything, persistent.

---------------------------------------------- Hearing those words leave Lionstep's mouth forced a growl out of Lionsong. What kind of mouse brain fool would even think of such a stupid idea!? Her eyes narrowed again, Lionstep just had a habit of getting on her bad side and stay there for that matter. She hated it when cats offered to help with her sister, they couldn't rewire her brain to fix what was wrong. Nope, in fact they were stupid for even asking let alone offering. Deputy are not Lionstep was going to get a rude awakening.
"Did you fall from the stupid tree before I got here?" Lionsong snapped, taking an advancement toward him, her eyes filled with annoyance. "You will NOT! Do that, you won't pity Cougarflight, you will leave her alone understood?" Lionsong hissed her posture becoming like a huntress ready to spring.
"You might think that helping Cougarflight and teaching her will secure your rank as deputy but you can go eat mouse droppings! Cougarflight is happy where she is and I"m fine with helping her out. Now keep your ideas to yourself or with StarClan as my witness you will regret it." Now the thread that Lionsong had growled was empty, she wouldn't dare attack the deputy, it was like attacking her clan, not she had every right to be angry as she was.

Lionstep Lionstep's own temper flared up, spurned on by Lionsong's harsh reaction to what he'd thought was a friendly, open-minded suggestion. His eyes flashed, his lips thinning as he spoke, "This isn't about pity! It's about building a stronger Clan!" The large golden tom let out a small snort, recalling her words about how she was perfectly fine picking up the slack for her sister's shortcomings. "Oh please. I may not be able to keep tabs on every cat in this Clan, but don't try to pretend it doesn't get tiresome hunting and patroling and living the life of two warriors instead of one." Lionstep's chest swelled with his words, the wind ruffling up his fur and seeming to coincide with his general air of abruptness. He intended to train Cougarflight whether he got Lionsong's permission or not; this wasn't so much a move he was making because of the struggles of one cat, it was a move he was making because he felt confident he would be successful, that the Clan would have one less weak link as a result.
"How long do you plan on hunting and patrolling in your sister's place?" interjected the tom, his tone sharp, "Are you going to fight her battles too? If TreeClan is ever attacked, what are you going to do? Stand in front of Cougarflight and intercept any enemy that comes her way?" The deputy suppressed a low growl at the thought. It was difficult to protect a whole Clan when you were too busy protecting a single cat.

However she knew better then to even dare to react, he was provoking her in a way and exile was a punishment for her attacking the deputy and if she was gone what would Cougarflight do?
"I am living the life of one warrior that cares for it's family. I am living my life from my sister. I keep her in check I make up for her short comings. It's not abnormal for a cat to go on exta patrols or go out hunting more than four times a day. " Lionsong growled, her eyes narrowed and her face contorted into a snarl.
"No one mister high and mighty Deputy, notices I do Cougarflight's work and that's how it's going to stay" Lionsong spat, her body tense, trying to ease out of fighter mode. "I suggest you bring your 'I'm so awesome I'm the deputy' little high you have back to the real world. " Lionsong snarled, her lust for battle pouring into her words. "You need look back on yourself before you change everyone" She growled, turning quickly and flicking her tail across his face, as if it was her claws, she was tense.

Lionstep The deputy's tail lashed from side to side with each word that came out of Lionsong's mouth. High and mighty? That's what she thought he was being? Alright fine, he was meddlesome, but by no means did he think himself of higher status and worth than the other cats in this Clan. He was above them in rank only, and even that wouldn't matter much when it came to battle - he would never hold back because he felt as though his Clan 'needed' him more than they needed any other warrior, he was just not the kind of cat who let his position go straight to his head. "How about you stop being so selfish?" He snapped back, his teeth bared, a low growl rising out of his chest like lava from a volcano, Lionstep not appreciative of her little tail swipe. "What in the name of StarClan would you lose if I were to take some time to train Cougarflight? If I fail, I fail, nothing changes. If I succeed," he eyed her meaningfully, though there was obvious fire behind those vibrant irises of his. "If I succeed, then you won't be doing four extra patrols and extra hunts trying to pick up someone else's slack! Which for the record, is abnormal!" He spat those words with less vehemence than Lionsong had spat hers at him, but it was obvious the deputy's temper was threatening to flare up, his civility thus far a credit to the years he'd spent trying to curb his preference for action over words. Lionstep could scarcely stay still, and so he didn't, the large golden tom settling for pacing around the agitated she-cat, his ears folded back, his massive paws solid against the cool earth. "You do realize life is only going to get harder for you once you get an apprentice, right? What do you think is going to happen once you have to start training someone on top of four extra patrols and four or five extra hunting sessons?" The deputy felt the fur along his spine bristle slightly. Chances are, she'd probably work herself to death.
