If this is what winter's gonna be like then count me out! Shaking the fur out of his pelt, Russetpaw returned from a brief prey-retrieving trip with Snoweye, his father. It had been a short opportunity for male-bonding, but the father and son pair had always been particularly close to begin with; Snoweye had given him some valuable advice, and Russetpaw had talked his ears off, bragging about himself, declaring his determination to do well, talking about everything he'd been learning these past few weeks. Being an apprentice was fun for a tom like Russetpaw, and it was especially fun if you had accomplices, though friends would do just fine. With that in mind, he deposited the little minnow he'd caught on the fresh kill pile, having shared a meal with his parents earlier before setting out, and went to go raise some ruckus. Poking his head into the apprentice's den, the ruddy tom filled his lungs with air; "LILYPAW WAKE UP!" Having spotted the pretty patched she-cat still curled up, asleep in the already cooling nests of the apprentices' den, Russetpaw just hadn't been able to resist. He liked Lilypaw; she wasn't a stick in the mud, she was just as curious and almost as determined as he was, she made for pleasant company - especially when it was likely they were going to do something...not necessarily within the rules. Still, all the recent frost and the frozen river and all the adults worrying about prey shortages had left Russetpaw badly in need of a little fun. Why not go play in the snow drifts? Or play tag in some of the few woodlands that they actually had? Every day didn't have to be all work work work, now did it? They were allowed to have fun every now and then. I know, I'll take her to see StarClan's Claws. We haven't seen a gathering yet, but that doesn't mean we can't get a sneak peek! "LILYPAW WAKE UP!"
Lilypaw woke with a start, her amber gaze a little startled at the wake up call. Peering through the dark, she spotted the familiar face of Russetpaw poking his head into the Apprentices' Den.
She smiled a little, though the weather outside was bitterly cold and many of RainClan's streams and rivers were frozen, the tortoiseshell apprentice wasn't at all worried.
In fact she was quite the opposite. Training was so much fun when the ground was covered in a blanketting of thich white snow.
She stretched her muscles, and though they ached a little, her amber gaze was filled with enthusiasm. Maybe she could catch something for the clan?
Lilypaw bounded over to Russetpaw, a spring in her step. She greeted the ruddy coloured tom with a friendly mew, "Hi Russetpaw."
Stepping out of the Apprentices' Den she was met by a wave of bitterly cold air, "So," she began, shaking some snow from one paw, "What do you want to do?"
Though she hadn't talked to Russetpaw much, she knew he was a lot like her, they were both incredibly curious and determined.

All the warriors at the moment were being so annoying! Worrying about prey shortages in the cold weather and whatnot. Lilypaw wanted a little break from RainClan's camp full of stressy warriors. Hopefully Russetpaw had the same thing on his mind.

Grinning, the ruddy tom flicked his tail towards the entrance. "You've never been to a gathering yet, right? But I've been to StarClan's Claws before - they're huge!" Russetpaw wasted no time in launching into today's plan of action, his tone dropping into that particular note of charisma and enticement that usually ended with him wandering or coaxing others to wander out of the territory with him. He lowered his voice to keep from being overheard. "Mudfang says the river is mostly frozen over, we should go check out the gathering place - it's technically neutral ground, so we aren't breaking any rules." Ah loopholes. Sometimes they were his best friends. The cat he'd been referring to, Mudfang, wandered past with a surprisingly sizeable trout in his mouth, and the irritated screech of Mudfang's mother at his back. Russetpaw grimaced for him in sympathy, but when the warrior glanced this way, Russetpaw plastered on a smile full of innocence. Nope. I'm not up to anything. Honest. Carry on, noble warrior. With Mudfang out of the way, Russetpaw swiveled back around to face Lilypaw, shaking snowflakes off his whiskers. "So how about it? Let's go check it out and go fishing on the way back." Lilypaw smiled. It seemed that Russetpaw had a plan. She shook her head at the ruddy coloured apprentice's first question. She had heard of StarClan's Claws, the place where the five clans gathered once a moon. Her paws trembled with excitement at the thought of going to the sacred place. It wasn't like they would be breaking the warrior code by going there anyway.
StarClan's Claws was neutral ground, as Russetpaw had just said, she smiled, also lowering her voice, "No-one will even know we've gone," she grinned. She glanced over her shoulder to check no-one was listening in on their conversation.
Just as Russetpaw referred to him, Mudfang passed.
For a second, Lilypaw expected him to join in on their conversation but then the ear-splitting screech of none other than the noble warrior's mothe pierced the air.
The tortoiseshell-and-white she-cat flashed him a sympathetic glance, but when he passed, she was a little relieved.
"I'm in," she mewed, her voice scarcely a whisper just in case another warrior was passing.
She couldn't wait. StarClan's Claws, here I come!

"Where are you two headed?" mewed Vultureback, having set down an undersized trout to address the two apprentices leaving camp a little too hurriedly. Russetpaw whipped around, gazing up at the mottled warrior with a look of innocence. "Going out to hunt for the Clan, well, fish but you know what I mean." There was a brief silence in which the ruddy tom wasn't sure if the behemoth RainClan senior warrior believed them; the apprentice was able to release the breath he'd unknowingly been holding when Vultureback gave a dismissive flick of his tail, scooping up the fish again. "Be back before sundown." He mewed over his shoulder, padding off in the direction of the fresh kill pile. Russetpaw waited until the warrior was out of sight to celebrate. Throwing Lilypaw a reckless, excited grin, Russetpaw nudged her with his shoulder playfully, loping past the exit to camp and into the snowy RainClan territory, enchanted and lighter of heart despite the cold. He thought it was kind of beautiful, actually, the way the snow blanketed everything. Even though the frozen river meant less food, he still liked winter. He liked the quietness, and the stark contrast of fur against the pure white billowy snowbanks and chilly snowflakes he liked catching with his tongue. When they were out of hearing range from the cats at camp, Russetpaw filled his lungs with air and called up to the icy branches above. "YAAAAHOOO!" The apprentice lurched back at a startled bird took off, leaving Russetpaw to recover quickly and laugh in it's wake, turning back to his accomplice. "Pretty great, huh? I kinda like the snow. Lilypaw tried to look as normal as possible when they were approached by Vultureback, though it was difficult when there was so much excitement building up inside of her. It was understandable that they had been approached by the mottled warrior seeing as they had been departing camp so hurriedly. Lilypaw just smiled sweetly, that usually worked. She spotted the trout he was carrying, a little undersized in her opinion. Even she could catch something bigger than that!
She shook yet another tiny snowflake from one of her whiskers. Vultureback seemed satisfied at Russetpaw's little lie about hunting because he soon left them to it. It wasn't really a lie though, they'd catch something to feed the clan on the way back.
She remained silent as they exited the camp, though as soon as they were out of earshot, Russetpaw let out a yowl.
A bird in a nearby tree suddenly took flight. Lilypaw jumped at it's sudden movement, then laughed, realising it hadn't been an enemy warrior and was just a pigeon.
She collapsed into the snow, excitement flooding through her. The cold didn't bother her at all, not with her thick fur.
She glanced over at the russet-coloured apprentice.
"Pretty great, huh? I kinda like the snow. It's...different."
Lilypaw smiled, "Me too, I love the ice too. It's so... pretty." she replied.
She liked Russetpaw. She and the ruddy coloured tom had a lot in common and It was nice to finally have the company of anoter apprentice who was almost her age, though a tiny bit older.

The warrior-to-be fell into a play-bow, swatting with a sheathed paw at his long-haired calico companion, his fur fluffed up with exhileration rather than fear. What ELSE was the snow good for besides a good mock battle? Emerald eyes gleaming with his signature fire and spirit, the tom danced back out of reach, the snow crunching under paw before he hunkered down behind a snow-drift. When Lilypaw came closer, he sprang up in a flurry of snow chunks and descending flakes, shaking it all off his coat as he leaned in close to give her ear a tug. "Tag! You're the fox, Lily!" he purred, bringing up a game of Fox-Tag. Just about every apprentice knew how to play, it was pretty easy; whoever was 'it', had to pretend to be a fox to capture and cobble up the other apprentices. If they tapped one of the other apprentices, then it was their turn to be the fox instead. It was a silly game, and very popular amongst the older kits in RainClan, but Russetpaw was in one of those silly moods to match a silly game. Besides, Lilypaw was fun. She wouldn't turn up her nose at something like this, right? Not when things were going so well for them so far! Before Lilypaw could respond, Russetpaw batted her with a sheathed paw. The tortoiseshell-and-white she-cat staggered backwards, then lunged forward at the ruddy coloured apprentice, mischief glinting in her amber gaze.
Making sure her claws too were sheathed, she batted him on the ear and gave him a playful shove towards a snow drift.
While he returned to his paws, she hid herself in another snow drift, not bothered at all by the cold.
When she heard pawsteps, she leapt out at him only to find her knew she was there.
"Tag! You're the fox, Lily!"
Lilypaw purred, Fox-Tag! She used to love playing Fox-Tag as a kit with Tricklepaw.
She let out a fake growl and faced Russetpaw, excitement dancing in her eyes, "You dared mess with Lilypaw, supreme leader of the foxes!" she puffed out her chest, trying to make herself look intimidating, "I'm going to eat all of the kits in you clan, that'll teach you not to mess with Lilypaw!
She raced after the russet-coloured apprentice, her adrenalin pumping. Gone was the boredom of sitting around in camp doing nothing. So what if there were prey shortages, New-leaf would come around and prey would be plentyful once more. All that mattered to Lilypaw right now was winning this game of Fox-Tag.
Something long and glittering in the distance caught her amber gaze. She stopped, shaking the snow out of her pelt.
It looked like a river, though it was completely still
"Is that the frozen river?" she asked Russetpaw, pointing her feathered tortoiseshell-and-white patched tail towards the still river.

"And I, the fearless Russetstar of RussetClan, will not allow it!" They played for a good while, Russetpaw enjoying the easy game of fox-tag with someone he could get along with so well. It wasn't that Russetpaw had difficulty making friends - quite the countrary, he was all for cross-Clan friendships and playdates and mock battles and such - he just found it particularly interesting that, well, a girl could be this much fun. Pausing when she drew her attention to the frozen river, the tom's sides moving quicker with the energy he was burning through, Russetpaw grinned. "Yep, that's the frozen river. Pretty cool, huh? It looks like tom just kind of...stopped."

[/color] And that it did. With the river frozen, the trees bare, and the snowflakes momentarily ceasing to fall, it really did look as though Father Time had waved his hand and willed the world into stillness. His breath coming out in clouds in front of his dark pink nose, Russetpaw bounded forward to the edge, careful not to slip on the snowbank and headfirst onto the frozen lake. After a while of studying it's solidness, Russetpaw dug around in the snow and produced a cold frosty rock.
Picking it up in his mouth, he made an awkward toss, and the rock made a considerable clunk on the surface of the frozen river, the apprentice's ears pricked forward in anticipation. The surface held, without so much as a single crack.

Russetpaw grinned, suddenly feeling the need to show off. Putting on his most charismatic voice, the ruddy tom's narrowed emerald eyes settled on Lilypaw.
"I betcha I can cross it." He mewed, hoping she'd find that a feat worthy of admiration. He'd never really wanted to impress a she-cat before, in fact he still found them more mysterious than the Moon Tree, but then again he'd never seen a frozen river before either.
There was a first time for everything, right?

Lilypaw's gaze settled on Russetpaw.
"Yep, that's the frozen river. Pretty cool, huh? It looks like time just kind of...stopped."
What the russet coloured tom had said was pretty much how the calico apprentice would describe the scene. The air was cool and still and for a moment there was silence, before Lilypaw spoke, "I don't get why the warriors are so worried. The clan won't starve, the prey can't ever die out here, can it?" she met Russetpaw's gaze, "That's why StarClan led us here, isn't it?"
She shook another snowflake from one paw and her amber gaze quickly lost all seriousness it had held a minute or so ago.
She stepped forward to admire the frozen river. It was completely still and gleamed in the fading sunlight. Curiosity getting the better of the young apprentice, she reached out a paw to touch its icy cool surface.
Russetpaw had just thrown a rock onto it, probably to check if it would carry weight without creaking.
It didn't make a noice.
"I betcha I can cross it."
Lilypaw grinned, "Really?" she challenged, mischief glinting in her amber gaze.

They'd be stuck hunting on land, which, in Russetpaw's eyes, wasn't necessarily a bad thing. He'd never had the pleasure of hunting what the other Clans hunted, and it was a secret desire of his to taste quail, toad, rabbit and mouse - just to see if it was honestly any good. If it wasn't, then he would lay the matter to rest and never stray away from fish again. "Really?" "Well yeah really. I'm Russetpaw, remember?" He boasted, grinning at her like the cat who ate the canary. "I crossed this river when it was much more dangerous - the icy waters were rushing over the rocks so fast you could hardly see them!" Emerald eyes gleaming with the exaggerated and likely false tale, Russetpaw just couldn't be stopped - not when he was already building up momentum and self praise. "Razorfang got stuck out on the rocks, so I went out to go save him - well he flailed and I slipped, I hit my jaw so hard I swear, I saw Silverpelt! The whole rescue hurt is pride, y'know,"

[/color] His boastful tone dropped down into one of thoughtfulness and sympathy, as though HE were not the victim in such a scenario. "It must've been pretty embarrassing to have to be rescued by an apprentice, so I promised not to tell anyone about it - except you, of course. You can keep a secret, right?"

Setting bright green eyes on his pretty calico friend, Russetpaw nudged her shoulder playfully. He felt that she could keep a secret - especially a secret that was more or less a complete and total distortion of the truth that Razorfang would kill him for if he ever found out, but hey, it was better to be SURE than sorry.

The tortoiseshell-and-white apprentice let out a Mmrrow of amusement as she tried to imagine Razorfang stuck out on the rocks and being saved by a small ruddy coloured apprentice. No wonder he didn't want anyone to know about it! I would've died of embarrassment if the whole clan knew I'd been saved by an apprentice.
She shook a snowflake from one of her long white whiskers and nudged Russetpaw teasingly, "Of course I can keep a secret," her amber eyes dancing with mischief, "Now, are you going to cross the river or not?"
Her gaze returned to the completely lifeless river. Peering down into it's still frozen waters, she thought for a second she could see silver shapes moving under the ice.
Fish?
She shook her head, blinking a little in confusion. No, fish couldn't live under the ice. Sure enough, when she looked again, the ice was completely clear and there wasn't any signs of movement coming from under it.
Probably just my imagination, she decided.

Watching the silvery bodies move slowly but fluidly beneath the surface, the apprentice boldly stepped out onto the frozen river, his emerald eyes locked on the prey just out of reach. He wasn't stupid enough to try to break the ice, but he couldn't help but wonder what would happen if they followed them. "You can come out, Lilypaw - it's safe, see?" With exaggerated jumping, Russetpaw bounced around like a young buck, making sure all four paws came in contact with the icy surface three or four times before he stopped. "I wanna see where it goes! Do you think this river runs all the way to StarClan?" It was quite the fanciful notion, that the river connected to the divine realm of their ancestors, but Russetpaw had come to this idea after seeing the night sky from the banks of the river. If he sat on the bank and looked down the whole length of the river, it really did look as though it connected with the stars and flowed into Silverpelt above them. Russetpaw had no desire to join StarClan so soon, but it would be kind of cool to know where this river ended. He could probably ask Razorfang or Blizzardclaw, but where was the fun in that? It would be much more eventful to investigate this little mystery themselves. Russetpaw too seemed to have noticed the fish under the ice, but he quickly dismissed it. There was no way they could reach the prey anyway.
Lilypaw watched as the ruddy coloured apprentice braved it out onto the ice. Her heart was in her throat when he made the first step, but after a few, perhaps over exaggerated, jumps to test if the ice was strong enough to carry his weight, the calico apprentice was satisfied.
Upon his beckoning, she too stepped out onto the slippery surface of the frozen river. Instantly, her paws slipped and slided all over the place, "Woah!" she skidded along it's surface swiftly, her heart racing, but not of fear, but sheer excitement and adrenalin.
She found, though, when she unsheathed her thorn-sharp claws, she slipped to a halt. Beaming widely at Russetpaw she meowed to him, finding that she had to raise her voice as she had slid a considerable distance away from the other apprentice, "Try it!" she called, "Just unsheath your claws, it's really fun!"
"I wanna see where it goes! Do you think this river runs all the way to StarClan?"
The tortoiseshell-and-white she-cat paused for thought, her gaze following the frozen river's trail. After a while it was difficult to trace the usually fast-flowing river as it dissapeared beyond the horizon, "Perhaps," she meowed thoughtfully, returning to Russetpaw's side, this time of her own accord by making sure she walked across the ice's slippery silver surface with her claws unsheathed, "I don't want to go to StarClan yet though," she added, her amber gaze a little distant, "I want to be a warrior first though."

Doing exactly as she said, Russetpaw unsheathed his claws and made an experimental run, his claws scratching the icy surface as he whooshed! right by the she-cat, laughing gleefully as he did so. "What a RUSH! I bet Blazehawk never did this as an apprentice!" Ha, poor LightningClan doesn't even HAVE a stream! Clawing his way back over to Lilypaw, his bright-eyed expression and low purring was interrupted by her thoughtful, heartfelt words about StarClan. Leaning forward, the ruddy tom boldly gave her ears a quick lick, green eyes lit with a warm fire. "Don't worry Lilypaw - we're gonna live forever, well, practically forever. We aren't going to StarClan until we're too old to catch fish!"

[/color] His nose wrinkled at the thought, the idea of being so decrepit was quite possibly the scariest thing ever. It was even scarier than Demon! Well, kind of. They were both a "Ten" on his scare factor, but for vastly different reasons.

Ready to leave those daunting thoughts somewhere in the snow, Russetpaw stretched out his front limbs, then his back limbs, rolling his shoulders and scrunching then lengthening his spine. Done with his little warm up, Russetpaw shook snowflakes off his whiskers, the ice sporting a red-tinged reflection at his paws thanks to his dark ruddy complexion.
"C'mon," he mewed, flicking her shoulder with his tail, whiskers twitching. "I'll race you to StarClan's Claws!"
