Rabbitleap
[attr="class","rabbitscroll"]
Leafbare was hitting hard this year. A good chunk of GaleClan's warriors were down, being treated for various severities of greencough. For the most part, Rabbitleap had so far remained unscathed, save for a sniffle and occasional cough here and there. He didn't think much of it, preferring to let the medicine cats use their limited resources on the more ill cats. Currently, he was stalking through the territory with two other warriors, in search of food. Every paw that wasn't out of commission was currently being utilized, whether for hunting, gathering water or herbs, or maintaining their borders as best they could. The slim warrior had been going out daily, sometimes more than once, just trying to do his part for his Clan.
He had taken Leopardheart, Lynxrush, and Harechaser this time. The hope was to work together and snag something a little larger, that would feed more than one cat. He had scented out a rabbit warren earlier in the day, so that's where they were headed. The current plan was to set Leopardheart and Lynxrush some distance away while Harechaser and himself flushed the rabbits out and chased them into the waiting claws of their Clanmates. "Okay, the warren is close. Leopardheart, Lynxrush. Spread out a bit and set up here. Harechaser and I will flank around and come up from behind. Harechaser, I'll get you to start digging out at one of the back entrances to flush them out, and then I'll start chasing any that come out the main entrance over here where you two can pounce on them. Harechaser, if more pop out while I'm chasing the first ones, start chasing them here, too. I'm hoping that by having you wait, we'll be able to snag more than one." He looked to the two pouncers. "When we're in position, I'll wave my tail to signal. Return it to show you're in position and ready."
Leaving Leopardheart and Lynxrush to get set up, Rabbitleap led Harechaser in a wide half-circle to come up on the opposite side of the den. He then directed Harechaser over to the smaller exit he had found, while he moved into position a few tail lengths from the main entrance. Settling into a crouch, he lifted his tail behind him, glancing back to see Harechaser mimicking. He scanned the tall grasses in front of him, seeing two other tails pop up. He whipped his tail down sharply, signalling Harechaser to begin digging. Only a few seconds later, a rabbit burst forth from the warren, and Rabbitleap immediately lunged forward. The rabbit took off, and he followed, keeping a few tail-lengths between them, adjusting his course to guide the rabbit towards his waiting Clanmates.
As he raced across the moor, his breathing suddenly became much harsher. Confusion washed over him as he panted; running normally didn’t take so much out of him. Still, he pushed on, even as his chest constricted. They needed this food. His heartbeat pounded in his ears, drowning out any other sounds. The rabbit ahead suddenly shifted course, but as he went to turn, too many things happened all at once. He choked on his incoming breath, beginning to panic as air refused to move into his lungs. His body still moved, claws digging deep into the ground beneath him. His hindlegs attempted to plant themselves into the earth as a pivot point, but collapsed underneath him instead, sending him skidding through the dirt. His head hit hard, and darkness flooded his senses as his consciousness began to slip.
