RAVENPAW

Open your eyes, choking on his breath.
Open your eyes, choking on his breath.
[attr="class","raven-content"]Drip. Drip. Drip. Green eyes open to darkness. In darkness, you could never truly be sure whether or not your eyes were open. He strained them open wider, trying to take in any semblance of light, but nothing was there. He was aware of a distinct dripping sound, though not where it was coming from. It was almost like it was everywhere at once. Maybe even within him. No. Wait. There was something else. Something moving. He wasn't sure exactly how he became aware of it, as there was no light source here. But he could see a mass slipping through the darkness, displacing it like water. "Hello?" He called out, stepping forward. He felt his paws sink into liquid he couldn't see, black and insidous.
A sigh. He could definitely hear it, a whistling breath as though it bubbled up between the spaces in long, crooked teeth. Suddenly afraid, Ravenpaw froze, struggling to make out the shape. Suddenly, light slanted down from an unknown source, allowing Ravenpaw to see his own whiskers and the circle of darkness around him.
Drip. Drip. Drip. Disconcerted by the closeness of the sound, he stepped backwards, his eyes scanning around. A feline shape emerged into the circle of light from the darkness, seeming to materialise from nothing. It was slightly larger than Ravenpaw, and though it definitely had the shape and form of a cat, its appearance was not that of any cat from the waking world. A stark white and clean skull jutted out from a circling of dark, black feathers which ruffled as it moved. The eyeless sockets stared through Ravenpaw, the bone glinting off the light shining down from above. When it breathed, the breaths whistled up through the exposed bone, making a sound that indicated it was tongueless. Ravenpaw felt as though he should be bristling with terror at the sight of this creature, but he stared at it blankly as if he hadn't yet processed its horrifying appearance.
He found himself drawn forward, lifting a paw up out of the murky blackness to bring him closer to the thing that stood before him. The black feathers that framed the skull lifted as though in alarm, and those lipless jaws opened, the exposed teeth parting in a soundless gape. The jaws extended far beyond what a normal cat could achieve, sending a chill through Ravenpaw's fur. Then the creature dipped its dark, feathered paws into the blackness, lifting the dripping foot up to its own skull and smearing the blackness across the pure white bone. It left a painted dark smear across its features, those empty sockets staring at him, never leaving Ravenpaw's face. Then, once more dipping a paw into the inky tar, it leaned toward Ravenpaw. The dark tom wanted to leap backwards, and finally a bristle began to form along his spine. But he did not move as those strange, feathered toes smeared the cold tar across his own face. Confused, frightened, wanting answers, he simply stared at the creature in open bewilderment.
He only flinched when it turned to run back into the darkness where he couldn't see. "No, no wait!" Ravenpaw yelped, his voice not quite echoing or carrying, almost as though the space around him was closed in and claustrophobic. He took off after the creature, the dark tarry smear cold on his own face. "I don't understand!" He yowled, his legs stained dark with tar. "Stop!" But he could no longer hear the splashing of feet ahead of him. It had vanished, with no answers to give him.
He jolted awake, sweat forming above his green eyes as he gasped and panted for breath. He shivered in his nest, his mind reeling from the images he had seen, full of dread. It had just been a dreadful nightmare, not real, and yet the indistinct creature with a feathered pelt, feline figure and a face of death remained in his thoughts for the remainder of that moon.
Inspired by Heli's interpretation of the song Exxus being a recurring nightmare of Ravenpaw's where he chases after a bird-cat-skull hybrid creature that is terrifying to him but he wants to know more about. He chases this creature through his nightmares but never gets the answers he is looking for.
