Snake | Lead Cave Guard | The tail tip of Snake was twitching so much that it felt like it'd fall off. After the news of the fox scent not only in Tribe territory but at a very important, well traveled location. There was a lot of stress that was added to the thought of what it could be doing. Primarily, Snake was worried about what would happen if it moved to a place where the tribe didn't go very often. What if the fox set up a den in their territory. It was big enough that maybe, just maybe, they'd miss it. And that frightened him. Even still, that wasn't something that he felt that he could outwardly show. There was enough responsibility that he needed to be careful how nervous he actually ended up looking about what, for the time being, was just a fox. Just a fox. He looked around again. He'd already told some of the Cave Guard's to meet him here, by the entrance. But he'd also told Moon and he was looking for her now, waiting for what was quite possibly going to be a long time of tracking and work to get everything they needed to done. He just hoped this was going to turn out alright. Tap, tap, tap went his claws on the floor. Rooster took the Tribe's safety seriously. Snake didn't have to wait long for the stocky grayish-brown tabby tom to appear at the designated meeting space. A fox wasn't so big a threat that Rooster's brow was furrowed and his jaw tight with concentration. In fact, upon seeing his old guide, Rooster's maw split into a cocky grin. "Now this is a good way to spend a day. Who else did you ask to come with us?" They'd need a prey hunter, obviously. A cat with a powerful enough nose to make up for the cave-guards' sensory shortcomings. Now that he'd arrived, Rooster caught on to the older tom's fidgeting. The tap tap tap of claws on river rock, the frenetic swish and flick of a dark-tipped tail. Rooster looked bemused. Yes, this was serious, but there wasn't too much urgency, right? The Tribe had been warned, and Rooster had full faith in his family's ability to track down the mangy old thing and force it to leave. If I was lead cave-guard, would I be tapping my claws too? Rooster, while not the most imaginative creature, was able to coax his synapses into picturing a reality where the Clan had chosen him as the leader of all the cave-guards. Words like burden, huge responsibility, can't fail, constant vigilance sprang to mind, and Rooster swallowed his relief that it was Snake and not him who had to worry about such things. Rooster's ambitions were rooted in the Skyteller's approval - and at first he'd been... well, jealous that his Tribemates didn't think him worthy of being the lead cave-guard, but he got over it fast. Snake was his teacher, of course it would land on Snake's shoulders and not his. I still have a lot to learn from him. With that in mind, Rooster adopted a more impatient attitude, choosing to pace a little and match Snake's anxious mood. mintedstar/fur Ghost the Undead Goddess ♛ 𝔽𝕒𝕓𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟

It wasn't really an impatience and anxiety that Snake would have liked. It just served to make the whole idea of what they were doing more difficult. But he tried not to show it. Instead, he focused on answering Rooster's question. "Moon," he said. That wasn't a big surprised. Moon wasn't so much the obvious choice due to her skills (that was a bit debatable at any point, since Snake had a clear bias), but he was aware that she was likely to be a fair more calming element to all that was going on. Or, specifically, the anxiety he was placing on the situation. He forced himself to sheath his claws again and breath out a sigh. "Other than that, we're expecting two other cave guards soon." He scanned the darkness of the caves behind Rooster and curled his tail closer to his body. While he was confident that he could be a good lead cave guard, sometimes he had doubts. Like now. How much feelings were too many? How likely was he to just cause more problems by how he reacted to a situation? What if he was leading everyone into too much danger? There was a lot that could go wrong and that's what scared him. But at least Rooster was here. That offered quite a bit of relief all around. There was just a matter of what else they could be heading for. But no. Cut that thought off now.

Her bushy tail furled out behind her, billowing in the breeze from the falling water. She hadn’t been a Cave Guard long, but her anticipation at going on such an important expedition had her brimming with excitement. This was her opportunity to prove herself, and she was going to snag it. Snake himself had tutored her and knew her lack of patience better than she herself did. More than anything, she wanted to show him that his teachings hadn’t been wasted, that she had become the defending claws of the Tribe as Skyteller had always believed she would be. [break][break]And who else was joining the party, except for Rooster himself? Splash felt a grin crossing her face as she saw him, catching the last snatches of his words. "Now this is a good way to spend a day. Who else did you ask to come with us?" Splash bounced into the light, her golden-green eyes gleaming with mirth. “Me.” She purred, looking at her former guide with warm eyes. “So, is it just me, Snake and his shadow going?” She asked sarcastically, motioning towards the pair who were both pacing together step-for-step. She loved Rooster dearly, but boy was he cracked as an egg sometimes. Her whiskers twitched in amusement. Did he hope to emulate Snake by matching his every move? [break][break] [attr="class","ray-img"] And then came Spotted Bark of Silver Birch, his silver form seeming so small next to the tall, muscular cave guards. Even though he was a former Clan cat, Birch’s physique had always matched that of a prey hunter, which allowed him to slot in perfectly with the rank when he had decided to join the Tribe. He dipped his head respectfully to Snake, his heart leaping into his throat. If he was to be their tracker, then this was his first proper test as a Tribe cat. He feared letting his Tribemates down, but firmly reminded himself that his job was only to help them find the threat. Not fight it. Fighting had never been his strongsuit, and living here in the Tribe allowed him to put all his focus into honing his hunting skills. “I’m the, uh, tracker.” He explained shyly, looking from Rooster, to Snake, to Splash. “I think someone mentioned it might have been a fox?”[break][break] [attr="class","boxo-notes"]YAY. His shadow! It actually wasn't until several minutes later that Rooster recognized his former To-Be's slight, and he snorted like a wounded boar. "I'm just respectful of my former mentor, something you could learn something from!" He betrayed his true feelings with a half-grin, squaring up as if he might give Splash a good cuff around the ears for her cheek - but the presence of their so called tracker poured ice water on his cheery mood.
Rooster's striped brow furrowed. "You're not Moon." He glanced from Splash to Birch to Snake, expecting one of them to have some kind of explanation. It was true, Birch had cast aside his life as a Clan cat, but... Rooster couldn't shake the feeling that he had to be cautious around this cat. Careful. Trust wasn't something they could give away, like extra fresh-caught prey. It was important and it should be protected. His distrust of the Clan cats had only increased after the earthquake. The many opportunities for Rooster to observe and accept a culture different from his own had been largely lost on the bulky cave-guard.
"Moon got caught up with something else." The voice that penetrated the tension was Dappled Sunlight Through Canopy Leaves, a very large tortoiseshell whose role in the Tribe was as obvious as the weather. Rooster huffed. "What could be more important than being personally picked by Snake for a mission?" He didn't expect Sunlight to have answers for him, but no small part of Rooster grumpily blamed the tiny, absent she-cat for this new introduction to the lineup. After another pawful of seconds spent being annoyed about it, it dawned on Rooster that their party was now full.
He raised his chin, recapturing his dignity as he turned to face Snake. "Alright then. I'm ready." Even if it means relying on this Birch fellow. Rooster couldn't stop the intrusive swirl of critical thoughts; could they really trust someone who switched allegiances so quickly? The Tribe was far superior, obviously, but... Confusion flitted through Rooster's mind, and he shook it off. He needed to focus. mintedstar/fur Ghost the Undead Goddess ♛ 𝔽𝕒𝕓𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟OOC: Sunlight used with permission from Ghostie. <3

With the current group collected and Moon's excuse made, Snake dipped his head to his Tribemates and headed off. His tail flicked for a couple seconds before he responded to Birch's question, "That's the scent that was picked up. Though it smelled off. I wouldn't be surprised if we're facing a fox with kits." Hopefully not many. But it wouldn't something denied by Snake's pessimism to learn that the fox was a mother and it would be even harder to get ride of her when she was trying to protect her cubs. "But that's just what the reports were. Today's motto is to expect the unexpected." His words were soft, so as not to betray his thoughts. He didn't feel like he could properly account for everything that was about to happen. It felt more like evaluating the possible damages was about to stretch out in front of him into a spider's web of impossibilities. He kept those thoughts under control though. Instead, he just focused on watching the path ahead, judging his steps as he lead the others toward Snake River. It was easier to start from the point that the scents had been located in. This was where there would be the most likely chances of picking up the trail of the fox (or foxes). He looked to his 'shadow' then, trying not to remember Splash's words. They'd stung just a little, but he was attempting to hold himself together and be a good role-model for his fellow Tribemates. And at least he was hopeful that Rooster would be a good match against a fox, should this turn into a fight. At least his doubts hadn't rested in the same location as Rooster's. He was at least willing to trust Birch knew the scent of fox - probably more familiar to it than the new cats around him day in and day out now. (Was that a rude thought? Snake's eyes cast sideways, trying to see if Birch had suddenly gained mindreading powers. His tail flicked in such a way as if to ward that possibility off.) Either way, it was good that he had quickly been placed as a replacement when Moon hadn't shown up. (He hoped she was having fun wherever she was. Maybe she'd catch up. It would make him feel more comfortable to have some other familiar faces other than Rooster.) Eventually he pulled to a stop though. Looking around a collection of rocks and then eventually to Birch. "Here," he said. "This is where the scent was reported. Hopefully it isn't too stale to pick up a lead." He looked to Splash, Sunlight, and Rooster then. "Be on guard. The priority right now is locating the fox and driving it off if we can do so without great harm to ourselves. Understood?" That was at least the logical, save conclusion he'd reached on how to phrase all of this. An added glance at Rooster. Splash's words briefly tempted him to tell Rooster to take the lead position. Then he shook the idea off. It had been a joke (or at least, he wanted to take it as such). He shouldn't let it rattle him. Words: 531 // Tags: Fawn Ghost the Undead Goddess ♛ 𝔽𝕒𝕓𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟
