Wounds - not the emotional kind, no amount of cobweb could staunch that kind of bleeding - needed attention. Without an apprentice, Ebonyheart could not be everywhere at once. After two maddening days, Ebonyheart made a necessary decision.

Whitehawk was chosen to act as temporary deputy, for reasons that must have seemed obvious to some. What he lacked in perfect vision, he made up for in quality of character.

"Congratulations," said Honeynose, trying hard not to scratch at the poultice Ebonyheart had applied to the base of her ear. The Clan was gathered around, some still in shock, some still in need of medical attention as they took shelter with the Tribe. The stench of fear and exhaustion permeated every living body there, but there were some who flocked closer to Whitehawk, as if he represented stability they craved.

Already, voices were rising up into a tide of murmurs and questions.

"How do we look for survivors?"

"Can we go home again?"

"How are we going to keep ourselves fed?"

"What should we do, Whitehawk?"

"I can't find my mum, I'm scared..."

The burden of leadership was heavy, and the added sting of survival did not help. But a burden on many shoulders instead of one, could lighten the load.

Something painful lingered in those first two days of being in the Tribe. Something that wasn’t just the loss of the clans’ homes. Everyone who had fled into those mountains had lost something that day, whether that be their camp, their feelings of contentment, or even loved ones. No one had been spared. But, as much as he hated comparing the lives of some to the lives of others, there were multiple within that cave who had been hit harder than the rest.

A single saddened green-yellow orb looked on at the group of gathered cats on the opposite side of the cave. Owlstar, Nightrunner, Cloverstar, Dapplefire, Silverstar, Emberheart, and Mossheart. The helms of each of the respective clans. But there was one among the group who...wasn’t quite like the rest. Ebonyheart. The only Medicine Cat within the gathered. While the other Leaders and Deputies stood carrying on with their deliberations, duties that were their own, Ebonyheart had no choice but to be among them, for she was the only one able.

Birdstar, Leader of Stoneclan, and Sorrelclaw, Deputy of Stoneclan, both victims to the earthquake. One consumed by that of a landslide, and the other…..well….no one really knew. But they were both gone, and with Ebonyheart the only remaining cat with authority in the clan, she was given the mantel by default. She was a capable cat, one who he was confident would never let the clan go guideless. But, at the same time, the loss of both Birdstar and Sorrelclaw had taken a heavy toll on her, just as it had many. He almost wondered if the grief that plagued his Medicine Cat was in some way greater than anyone else’s, but he tried not to assume.

Instead, he did what he could to help her and help the others as well. He had been volunteering to head out hunting with other patrols and was attempting to comfort those of his clan.

Even in that moment, he sat with the fluffy form of his Apprentice, Wisteriapaw, leaning against him, which was when he heard Ebonyheart's voice. The announcement was brief, as he might have suspected one to be. But surprise found his features as she stated that she would be choosing a temporary Deputy, and that that cat would be himself. His single orb blinked a few times in surprise before he stood, taking a few steps forward. Though he could feel many eyes locked on him, he tried not to feel the pressure as he dipped his head to the black she-cat. "Thank you, Ebonyheart."

He heard words around him of congrats, but, even more so, he heard questions. Questions of confusion, questions of fear and concern. He could feel the tension building, and he understood, but he couldn't remain quiet. Not now.

"Everyone, we will make it through this. All of us. This is just another boulder in our path that we will make it over, one way or another." He looked momentarily to Ebonyheart, taking a deep breath and letting it out slow. She had made the choice for him to help her in the clan's time of need, and he needed to take on that role, preferably quickly under his own watch. His singular gaze went to those who gathered around.

"We will do what we can to get back on our paws, starting with those who are injured. Everyone please make sure that those around you who are hurt make it to a Medicine Cat to be treated. And if you are an Apprentice, speak to the Medicine Cats to see if they need any help. As for our Warriors, we need as much food as we can, but this is not our territory, and we must follow the rules of our hosts. Everyone seek out the prey-hunters and see if we can form a number of hunting parties. We will focus on our health for now."

His gaze found itself looking into the far distance outside of the Tribe's lands. We can only hope that we will have a home to return to when this is over.
