Shadow and his brother Gray were born to two Cave-Guards, Shadow a far more silent and stoic than his brother. They were raised upon the belief that they would be future Cave-Guards just like their parents. Even from a young age, it was shown that Shadow preferred the quiet and solitude, not nearly the troublemaker that his brother happened to be, which of course caused him to gain favor with their parents though it never seemed to cause an issue between the siblings. Despite that fact, it does become clear throughout the remainder of their kithood and into their To-Be-ship that Gray does become competitive with Shadow, who seems to rather ignore that fact and focus more on his development and growth as a solitary cat.

• To-Be: 
  

Though Shadow was given a Guide (Guide up to Adopter), like all other To-Be's he was trained by a majority of the Cave-Guards to give him a rounded knowledge from different perspectives. He was impressive as a youngster, picking up things quickly and working himself hard during training or outings with the Prey-Hunters. He tended to keep to himself out of preference and remained a rather stoic tomcat compared to the more outgoing members of the Tribe, and despite his brother's insistence on being competitive with him, Shadow tended to ignore any challenges or competition from both Gray and any other young tomcats. 

• Cave-Guard: 

Still as stoic and quiet as ever, Shadow moved up in the ranks from a To-Be to a full on Cave-Guard. There were a pawful of times when many different she-cats fawned over him though he ignored their advances and didn't really seem to have an eye for the she-cats of the Tribe. At least, not until a few clan cats decided to come and join the Tribe. Which was when he met his future mate, Dawnflower, who quickly took up the name Flower that Blooms at Dawn after gaining the rank of Cave-Guard with him. It was Shadow who had been assigned to help train and guide Flower as she took her first steps into Tribe life, and her gentle heart and compassion seemed to quickly steal his heart. He properly courted her in the solitude of just the two of them, not one to show such personal things or emotions among the many faces of his Tribemates, and eventually they became mates and she bore his kits.
