T he earthquake had been scary, sure, but in Briarsky’s opinion it was quite possibly the best thing to have ever happened to her. She wouldn’t dare say such a thing aloud, knowing all who had been lost in the disaster and many of who still remained were injured or grieving. But, for the first time ever, she witnessed a beautiful thing—the coming together of all the Clans in the midst of a terrifying unknown. Part of her thought it was fascinating and poetic, but the larger part of her couldn’t help but think this widened her mate selection pool significantly. Nothing forced you to get to know each other and get along like having to be stuck in a cave with every single other cat in the valley and the mountains. And Briarsky intended to get to know someone very intimately. Who that someone was, she didn’t yet know. So when Owlstar approached her to ask her to mentor Harepaw, she hadn’t had quite the reaction the LightningClan leader was probably looking for. “That’s seriously going to get in the way of my mingling, Owlstar… if you know what I mean,” she mewed cheekily, completely shameless. The look on her leader’s face was enough to make her change her tune quickly. “Oh, you weren’t joking? I mean… it would be an honor to mentor an apprentice. I’m sure I can fit his training into my schedule,” she promised lightheartedly, already getting up. As many jokes as she made, she tried to take her duties as a warrior seriously. Some might disagree, but at least she was enjoying herself, right? Now, this would be interesting. She’d been in the apprentices’ den briefly with Harepaw, and she wondered how that might affect her ability to mentor him. Would he take her seriously? Did she want that? No, she decided abruptly. She loved her former mentor Silverburr, but she wasn’t going to be quite as serious as him and intended to have a more exciting training style. Her mind was already buzzing with ideas as she weaved around the large groups of cats that were clustered around sharing tongues. The Clans were finally starting to relax more around each other—she could see now that most groups had cats from two or three different Clans in them. Her ice-blue eyes scanned the cave, looking for Harepaw’s silver bengal pelt. He looked so much like his brother Swiftpaw, she knew for sure she’d mix them up, so she was going to approach this situation with confidence. She finally spotted the LightningClan apprentice and his brother, and picked her way over to them. “Harepaw?” she called. “Wanna get outta here? Surprise, I’m your new mentor.” She assumed he would already know about the fact that Sparkjaw, his former mentor, had been injured, but he probably hadn’t been expecting to get reassigned in the midst of all the chaos. It was just like Owlstar to still prioritize the training of apprentices, though.
