Splash of Leaping Trout
tribe of forgotten waters
[attr="class","splash"][attr="class","splash-content"]It was her first serious patrol as a cave-guard, and Splash felt the responsibility weighing on her shoulders as she followed behind Dark. So far, the prey-hunters had been very successful with their catches. The large torbie had watched the hunt with interest from a distance so as not to disturb potential prey, her keen golden eyes flitting between the surrounding area and the sky above. The life and skill of a prey-hunter was so alien to her, trained only in the dangers and threats of their mountain home and how to prevent cats from being claimed by them. To watch cats like Mulberry bring down a hare with little effort was fascinating.
The only downside was the rain. Splash's long, thick patched coat was hanging down from her muscled body like a great big shaggy cloak. She felt heavy and encumbered, irritated by the constant barrage of rain. "I can't believe they can even see anything in this weather." She said to Dark, motioning with a white paw towards the hunting party. He shook out his pelt, sending droplets flying everywhere. "Prey-hunters don't just use their eyes to see." He replied, smiling slightly at the bemused look that crossed Splash's face. He left the young cave-guard to ponder what he meant as the prey-hunters rejoined the cave-guards at the crest of the hill, laden with wet food. Splash found her mouth watering at the delicate scent of the prey. Even though their catch was soaking wet, it still looked delectable.
Thunder rumbled like some great beast above them, and Splash flinched at the sudden sound, claws unsheathed. But a storm was not something she could fight off, no matter how keen her protective instinct. The tension among the patrol heightened as they began their journey back to the cave. Splash held up the rear, her sodden pelt slowing her down. Moth's alarm made Splash's own apprehension increase. If even the Tribe's leaders were frightened, something was terribly wrong. It wasn't long before even she could sense it. An energy pulsing through the air, fierce and hot, ready to strike. Her fur bristled as she trotted quickly behind the other cats, ears flat to her head as though readying herself for trouble.
She felt it in her whiskers before she felt anything else. Like the sky itself were reaching down great, powerful paws and trying to drag her upwards into the clouds. Then, in less than a heartbeat, the entire world lit up. The light was glaringly bright, forcing her eyes shut and a shocked gasp to drive up from her lungs.
A chunk of wood flying off the splintered tree hit her in the shoulder, knocking her to her side with a snarl of pain. A heartbeat or so after the flash, a deafening boom rang out, making every cat flinch a second time. Splash forced her eyes to open and tried to rise to her paws, wincing in pain as she discovered she couldn't put weight on her leg. Cursing, she gritted her teeth and lifted her eyes to look on in horror as the damaged tree caught flame. She could only barely hear Mulberry's voice crying out for her prey above the ringing in her own ears as Ebony, one of the other cave-guards on patrol, hurried to let Splash lean against her and hobble forward. "Forget your stupid rabbit!" Splash snapped at her, golden eyes blazing with both pain and fear. "Your life is more important!"
