Dandelionkit
Sickness brewed in the pit of the Dandelionpaw’s stomach, but it wasn’t the kind of sickness quelled by herbs or rest. In fact it was made worse by both. Dandelionpaw had occupied her paws with sorting what few herbs she managed to find in their new temporary home high up in the mountains. The rare breaks between checking on the ill or injured left little time for an actual rest. Which left Dandelionpaw to dwell on her dilemma.
StarClan had been silent, even on the night of her ceremony she had received only the most blurry of dreams. Unable to make out the features of her guide, she wasn’t even entirely sure it was indeed a cat. Scared it was a bad omen, Dandelionpaw kept the blurry dream to herself and focused on her training.
Her dreams did not sharpen and it was clear she had been chosen as previously thought. So when the news of the warning about the coming disaster rippled through the camp, Dandelionpaw sat beside her mentor, nodding along when the message was relayed. Guilt twisting in her gut for having not been able to share in the burden.
When the earth trembled and the world threatened to crumble under their paws, Dandelionpaw worked hard to aid those in her care and in the days to follow offered her skill and knowledge to tend to the wounded. But as the death toll climbed and the graphic injuries burned into her memory, Dandelionpaw found the path chosen to be impossible for her to continue on.
Without StarClan’s connection Dandelionpaw would leave her clan blind to dangers once she was the only one to fulfil the role. The thought of Kindleflare being gone seemed too terrible an idea, Dandelionpaw knew what she had to do.
There wasn’t much courage in her heart, she had to admit that. Her body quivered and heart pounded hard in her chest, she feared others could hear. Despite that she kept her task in mind, asking to talk to speak to the high ranks of her clan. It felt strange to command the adults in her life, herself barely 15 moons, but grateful nonetheless that they gathered to hear her.
She cleared her throat several times, a frog seeming to have caught in her throat. The words almost refused to form but after several deep breathes, she forced them out.
“I have something to tell you, but please don’t be angry with me,” Her voice trembled, but she kept going. “I can not be the medicine cat that LightningClan needs. I do not have a connection with StarClan, I thought it would come with time that if I believed and held the faith but they won’t talk to me,” A lump formed in her throat stopping her words so quickly she nearly coughed. “I believe in them so much, I pray every night but still they ignore me,” She added, pained from the struggle to make her turmoil known. “I don’t think faith is enough, and I know our clan deserves all the blessings of StarClan I just can’t help us find them,” Dandelionpaw sighed, gaze aimed entirely at the floor now, refusing to meet even her mentor’s eyes. “I need to step down and find a different path,” She had manged to glance in Owlstar’s direction but once again her head felI. Her voice cracked with the false start. “I am sorry I wasted your Kindleflare,” Dandelionpaw finished, ears downward and tail still, an image of a she-cat barely held together with the thinnest of spiderwebs.
