Somehow, everything broke. Roachflight hissed, fear making his stomach roil and heave as the ground pitched beneath them. He could see Dapplefire stumble and then catch herself, several foxlengths ahead. Their territory was still damp after the flooding, and the Clan, wary of sinkholes, had to step carefully - and spread themselves out. Too much weight in one spot could spell disaster for many.

Above them, the trees creaked and groaned, and the low pitched rumbling hum was almost maddening in its constancy, causing Roachflight's movements to be jittery. He was lagging behind, but he wasn't the only one. Close by, looking equally frazzled, was an older she-cat. As if aided by the seriousness of the situation, her name actually sprang up in his mind only seconds after spotting her. Stoatclaw.

The first bloody rays of dawn were beginning to peek through the shuddering pines, but there was no chance to acknowledge this. Suddenly, a jagged shadow of a skinny pine pitched overhead. Dark copper eyes widened as the shadow stretched above him and all the way to Stoatclaw to his left. The tree was falling! Roachflight shouted as he lunged to the left, slamming his body into Stoatclaw to send her sprawling out of the way. The tree slammed into the ground so hard he felt it rattle his bones, and the sound hurt his ears, his body pulsing from the cacophony.

Chaos.

Everything was crumbling around her and her clanmates. Something bigger than they had ever experienced, bigger than any cat, bigger maybe than Starclan, was happening. Their world was literally falling down around them and there was nothing they could do about it.



Stoatclaw was one of the last cats to exit the clan, keeping an eye on the slower cats: elders, pregnant queens, queens with kits, that sort of thing. The clan were running for their lives, but there was no place they could go to escape. The disaster was all around them; it covered her pelt, filled her eyes and ears with confusion, and pierced her heart with terror. It was all she could do to keep her paws on the move.

I need to find Panthercall! She thought desperately, sending a hasty prayer to Starclan to keep him safe.



She wondered what the other clans were doing now. Were they experiencing the same things? Was the whole world falling apart, or just the clans? Was this punishment from Starclan for something? So many questions, and yet the only thing she could do was run. Run, and stick to her clan.

Suddenly, Stoatclaw heard the sickening crack of a tree snapping and she skidded to a halt, not knowing where the tree was going to fall or even which one had broken.



The wind was knocked out of her when a cat, not a tree, barreled into her and sent her tumbling into the brush. The tree landed squarely on the spot where she had been heartbeats before. Stoatclaw flipped herself on to her paws and was surprised to see her savior was Roachflight, a rather unpleasant cat to be around on any normal occasion. Maybe he wasn’t all bad? He saved her life, after all. Stoatclaw nodded to him, her eyes wild, “Thank Starclan you’re here, Roachflight!” she said breathlessly, partially due to the body slam she just received. “Come on, we have to keep moving with the clan!”

They were already behind, but it was not difficult to pick up the fear scent of their clanmates. Stoatclaw kept pace with Roachflight, but as they were running she saw ahead of them the ground begin to shift “Turn!” she veered off to the right, along the fault line. A few more pawsteps and the ground would have eaten them whole!

The earth seemed to yawn open into a jagged mouth - or a wound, and Roachflight hissed in alarm, feeling dirt and rock spray against his whiskers and face as he followed Stoatclaw's order. If she'd spoken just a half-second later... Roachflight squashed that thought as aggressively as he would any other enemy.

"Don't fall behind!" Dapplefire's yowl sounded above the cracking earth, and Roachflight snarled at the deputy. "You think we're TRYING to?!" He was an abrasive tom on a good day, but the heightened sense of danger - and that stomach-plummeting feeling of having almost fallen to his death - had him spitting vitriol at the drop of a whisker. He couldn't help it. This was not what he'd expected.

Shadowchaser's urgent message to Cloverstar, this warning from StarClan - it was all so much worse than what he could have ever pictured.

But Roachflight hurried on, he and Stoatclaw joining the throng of bodies all pressing towards the edge of the mountains. Somewhere above them, a distinctive, throaty rumble caught Roachflight's attention. Nearby, an older cat groaned - the sound so quiet he barely caught it. "What? Speak, you idiot!" He pinned the older cat with a burning copper stare, and the cat's eyes, already wide and rolling with fear, didn't even seem to see him. "The mountain's falling. The mountain's falling."

In the distance, a landslide was shaken loose, and from their position down below, it was as if a black cloud were coasting towards them - hungry and eager to swallow them up.
