Orioleflight
It had been brutal. The evacuation had taken precious time, and they weren’t anywhere near safety when the earth began to shake. Orioleflight had been near the back of the Clan, pushing the others forward with encouraging words and calls to keep going. The sounds of the earth rending and tearing still echoed in her ears, symphonied by the terror-filled wails of her Clanmates. Cats had been separated, cats had been lost, and yet the count kept rising. There was no way of knowing exactly who was safe and who was not, not until it was all over. The constant rain only made matters worse, and Orioleflight was exhausted. Still, she pressed on, herding her little group of StoneClan cats up toward the mountains. They had plans to regroup with the Tribe, and would make their headcounts then.
They just had to make it there.
A broken scream jerked Orioleflight’s attention to a new rift that was opening up. Yewpaw, at the edge of the group she was herding, stood dangerously close to where the ground was starting to split. The mottled warrior immediately shifted direction, sending up a shout. “Yewpaw!” Just as the ground beneath the apprentice’s paws dropped away, Orioleflight arrived, snagging the tortoiseshell she-cat’s scruff in the nick of time. Orioleflight skidded to a stop, quickly backpedaling as the crack opened wider, taking more stable ground with it. Suddenly, Slatewing was by her side, his teeth sinking into Yewpaw’s pelt to help take some of her weight. Together, the two warriors managed to pull the trembling apprentice a safe distance from the edge and could set her down.
Panting lightly, Orioleflight bodily shifted Yewpaw’s head to look away from the rift, dipping her own head to meet the young cat’s terrified gaze. “It’s okay, you’re okay. We’re going to get through this.” She glanced up to meet Slatewing’s equally scared gaze. “Slatewing, I need you to stay beside Yewpaw. Can you do that for me?” The young warrior immediately snapped to, giving a jerky nod. “Alright then.” She lifted her voice to reach the other members of their group. “Let’s keep going, everyone! We have to get up into the mountains to meet up with the rest of the Clan! Let’s go!”
As everyone started to move off, Orioleflight hesitated a moment, taking a deep breath to try to steady herself. For all her bravado, she was just as terrified as the young cats in her charge. There was so much uncertainty, so much fear, and so much further to still go. She was worried about Birdstar; she hadn’t seen him since she left him behind at the camp. She was worried about Herondive; they had become separated when the quake first began. She was worried about the fate of her Clan, the fate of the valley, and even the fate of the other Clans, as well. She was a loyal StoneClan cat, but that didn’t mean she didn’t have friends across the borders.
“StarClan, save us all,” she murmured, before stepping forward, swaying heavily on exhausted paws.

Sometimes.. The world finds it necessary to remind you of the good that it can hold, even when the bad seems to be taking hold all around you.
