Whiskers twitched as she peered out from the medicine cat den. She could scent the rain on the air; the warm weather of this sparkling morning would not last, of this she was certain. With a soft sound in her throat, the ginger and white healer stepped back into the safety of her den, paws wandering over to where he herbs had been left in minor disarray. She'd intended to properly sort them the previous day, but she'd somehow been consistently distracted by other things, warriors and apprentices passing by, or someone needed her opinion on something.

Not that she minded, of course. In fact, the aging medicine cat found it... Comforting when others asked her questions. Gentle paws picked out chamomile from the stack of herbs, sifting to find every last piece so she could tuck it safely into one of the nooks and crannies of her herb store. A silver ticked muzzle tilted just so as she picked out the juniper berries next. She couldn't quite discern why, but these little berries always made her think of Shadowchaser, NightClan's medicine cat. As her mind drifted to the younger cat, she couldn't help but smile warmly.

She missed her friend, just as she missed Falconstorm. Shadowchaser was much less temperamental, and had a fascinatingly inquisitive mind. His presence was reassuring, despite his younger age, and the LightningClan medicine cat found herself wondering how he was doing. Perhaps she should go and visit him soon... She'd have to go and ask permission to do so, and part of her wondered if she'd be granted that. As a medicine cat, she should technically have a free pass to do so, yet... Somehow politics always seemed to play a part. Still, she determined that she would try.

It was always nice to see a friend after some time, after all. And who knew, perhaps she'd learn something when she went there. The last time she and Shadowchaser had properly talked, she'd come to realize that perhaps her feelings weren't all that silly after all.

Shadowchaser

It had taken Shadowchaser all the self control in the world not to wake up Newtstripe. The discovery he'd made - an unfamiliar yellow flower the likes of which not even wise old Smokefur recognized - had him practically buzzing with giddiness. There was routine to Shadowchaser's life, outside of healing injuries; and there was comfort in that routine. But a spark of newness, a sense of novelty was a rare and beautiful thing - and it stoked the sleeping fires of his curiosity into a roaring blaze whose heat he couldn't ignore.

So he let his dearest friend sleep, and after a few excited words with one of the camp guards, he set out for LightningClan's border. Crossing StarClan's Claws was always a unique experience; the space was so large, almost intimidating, and he felt a peculiar sense of detachment passing through as if it were a typical meadow or stretch of woods. Shadowchaser dipped his head in respect as he passed under the looming shadows of the claws themselves, and his stride quickened.

The gathering place yielded to the grassy expanse of LightningClan territory, and Shadowchaser let out a deep exhale, his heart beating hard as he kept up his frantic pace. There was no rush. He knew that. But he'd let his excitement carry him forward, but tiredness was nipping at his heels as punishment for that enthusiastic stride. Shadowchaser stopped to catch his breath, carefully laying down the flower.

And nearly jumped out of his skin as a voice came from the tall grasses.

"You are here to see Kindleflare."

It wasn't a question.

Shadowchaser looked into the distinctively marked face of the warrior Cloudthroat. One half was a mask of tabby markings, the other was icy white, as if he were made of snow. His expression was coolly neutral, non-threatening. Shadowchaser bobbed his head, letting his lungs fill up with air. "Yes! May I be escorted to your camp?" There was no real may I, not with the way Clans worked. He was going to be escorted, or he was going to be turned away. He could not simply waltz right into the heart of their territory without permission. StarClan's protection only extended so far.

Without word, Cloudthroat turned and led him like a ghost back to LightningClan's warrens. Shadowchaser quickly but gingerly clamped the flower between his teeth and hurried after.

Upon setting foot in camp, Shadowchaser made a bumblebeeline for Kindleflare's den, excitedly waving his tail, ears perked forward as he came to a breathless stop before the gentle ginger feline. "Kindleflare! Look what I--it's new! It's something I've never seen before!" The words tumbled out with the flower, and Shadowchaser eagerly pointed to the pretty yellow petals and the large arrow-shaped leaves. "I found it just outside of NightClan territory. I probably missed it a dozen times, the yellow is hard to see at night." Shadowchaser finally snapped his mouth shut, watching with a blossoming purr as Kindleflare processed it all in her own time.
