Hope when you take that jump
He waited with bated breath. Watched every ripple of fern and frond for signs of his quarry. Russethawk rotated an ear, energy surging through him as he heard the call that would tell him his patience would soon be rewarded.
"Rosepaw, we're going out."
Russethawk surged out of the warriors' den like a pike through a streambed. He intercepted Waterstep and Rosepaw with a big grin and jaunty steps, as if he hadn't been waiting all morning to see his daughter. Brookfall had given him the cold shoulder when he tried to pry Splashpaw away from the large silver warrior, and he'd had to sit back and suffer as one of his offspring went on with their training.
Still, with three more kits, that meant he had three more chances to liven up his day with some much needed family time.
"Rosekit! Apple of my eye, song in my heart. Care to do some hunting with your dear ol' dad?" He purred, sparing Waterstep a smile that was clearly sorry but not as he verbally strongarmed his precious daughter away from the young warrior. Russethawk's tail draped over Rosepaw's back, his affection as strong as the leaf-fall winds. "Sorry, I should stop calling you Rosekit. You're my little 'paw now." Russethawk grinned, chuckling at his own joke. "One of four, actually."
Four kits. Four 'paws.
Four very good reasons to spend the beautiful morning out on a walk or telling stories by the waterside. (Hunting was just an excuse to get them out of camp, and to dissuade any onlookers that he was slacking off for the sake of family time). Nothing too embarrassing about Ashflight, of course. His desire to entertain and charm his kits was countered only by his self-preservation instincts. Movement caught Russethawk's eye, and his expression brightened further. "Sunpaw! Fruit of my loins! Want to go hunting with me?"
Emberlight was the Clan's deputy, and he couldn't be more thrilled that the cat Silverstar entrusted as his second-command was mentoring his son. However, surely kin could take priority, just for the day. Russethawk glanced around as if to spot the warm-toned tom, and he casually adjusted his stance so that maybe Sunpaw would be just a bit harder to spot by a certain someone.
