Uncomfortable in her nest, Duskrose decided to get up. The weather making her tense. She dreaded thunderstorms since her kithood. Stretching out her legs once she left the warrior's den, she saw Dunefang. Her brother watched from his spot across the camp. She met his gaze. His quiet disapproving look soured her decent mood. They hadn't spoken to each other since the day she told him about Blazefang. It seemed neither of them had the words to bridge the gap. Not to mention they were both equally occupied with their own duties. Their vastly different lives.

While her clanmates prepared for war with NightClan. She ventured toward the LightningClan border frequently. Even with their moorland rivals taking back the open woods, Duskrose tried to visit every other day. Some days she didn't see Blazefang not that she fretted. It wasn't easy to maintain their relationship. The rare moments they were together she kept sacred and close to her heart.

The coming storm meant there would be work to be done. Catching sight of Fawnspring a fair distance away from Dunefang. She ventured toward the she-cat, offering a small smile in greeting. Having interacted with Fawnspring in fleeting moments, Duskrose figured they could do a bit of hunting. "Fawnspring, are you busy?" Her tone a bit more reserved given her shift in the mood but nevertheless inviting.

She heard the far-off, muted growl of thunder, as if the mountains surrounding the valley were grumbling and groaning. Fawnspring sighed, giving up on coaxing her rather dramatic apprentice out into the forest when the skies promised rain. "Alright, alright, we'll do battle training tomorrow. But if you think you can avoid getting dirty forever, Snowpaw, then this is going to be a long apprenticeship."

Fawnspring accepted defeat, and rather than feel a sense of shame for being unable to properly motivate her apprentice, the diminutive she-cat saw it as an opportunity to be alone with her thoughts. Ever since Kindleflare's visit... It was as if her head had been scrambled up, like a bird's egg that had fallen from on high. Had that easy, perfect friendship she had with Thornheart really been so fragile? Now when she saw him, her heart fluttered, her nerves were frayed as if mice had chewed and chewed and chewed them down to tattered ends.

She loved spending time with him, but now there was the weight of what-if hanging between them - the electricity charged whenever Fawnspring was close enough to brush pelts with her best friend.

"Fawnspring, are you busy?"

Duskrose's question came out of left field, and Fawnspring leaped on it eagerly. "No I'm not. Did you have something in mind? Now would be a good time to hunt, before the clouds burst." Fawnspring's green eyes were soft and curious. Despite being caught up in her own concerns, she couldn't help noting that Duskrose seemed a little... on edge? Or maybe she's always like that. We aren't close, so I can't say anything for certain. It felt good, knowing the other she-cat had reached out to her first. It was probably just for the sake of convenience, but Fawnspring liked to think it was because of her amicable nature.

"You read my mind, a hunt would be nice," She answered the question without mother to give a polite greeting. If they wanted to have any success in catching something decent that would need to move quickly through the forest.

"I was thinking of somewhere near the open woods, I've scented rabbits nearby, we could get lucky and catch one."The idea was grand, hunting rabbits was no easy feat. Not that she worried too much about it. If LightingClan could do it then it was worth a shot by a TreeClan cat. In a fantasy world, she could pretend that all the time spent with Blazefang had let some of his hunting talents brush off on her. She knew deep down that it wasn't the case, but she had another secret.

The time spent seeking out and visiting with Blazefang had lent her rare moment to see the moorland cats hunt. She watched and memorized how they chased down and ambushed their prey.

Awaiting Fawnspring's reaction to her suggestion, Duskrose mused for the hunting technique in her head. It would likely be the smartest course of action to let Fawnspring partake in ambushing. Duskrose felt more surefooted to trample through the open woods to find and chase a rabbit. Nevermind the fact rabbits were often more quick-witted when it came to hiding in various crannies. Duskrose's ambition would prove her fault. Likely resulting in a failed hunt, a fact she refused to accept.

”Rabbits?” She couldn’t help sounding incredulous. It was rare for a rabbit to end up on the TreeClan fresh kill pile, and for good reason; they were hard to catch. When’s the last time I challenged myself? It could be fun! And hopefully she’d have a rabbit’s tail to bring to the kits to play with. Something she’d always enjoyed when she was their age (after she got over how morbid it was to play with a piece of a dead thing).

Duskrose was gazing at her expectantly, and the petite she-cat didn’t leave her waiting. Bright eyes were expressed her renewed openness. ”Well it’s worth a try! I don’t have much experience catching them. How do you suppose we catch one?” I need to warm up my muscles. I’ll likely have to do a fair bit of running.

They had strength in numbers. Fawnspring didn't have the faintest idea of how to catch a rabbit by herself; did the same methods that worked on mice and squirrels work on rabbits? Could they sense the vibrations through the ground like mice? With ears that large they must hear most predators before they smell them... Then again, a rabbit's nose was no minor thing either.

Fawnspring frowned in thought, letting the ideas ebb and flow as she worked towards a solution. Pale paws moved on muscle memory alone, and Fawnspring came back to herself just as the woods began to get thinner, the slender trees more wide apart as LightninngClan's expansive moorland lay a few lynx-lengths ahead.

Pleased with Fawnspring's answer. Duskrose led the way to the open woods. The slightly mixed scents reminded her too much of Blazefang, but she had no time to focus on that. Instead, she guided Fawnsprings to crouch low near a steadily growing bundle of grass.

"The trick is for one to wait and ambush it while the other chases. I think I'll chase it toward you if you can catch when it's close,"It sounded simple but Duskrose had a sinking feeling it would prove more difficult.

Content in her denial, she took a few paces away from Fawnspring. "Wait here and I'll try to drive one toward you," Having those be her parting words, Duskrose disappeared into the thicket, weaving about the space to find herself a busy rabbit.

Various other prey scents teased her nose, but she refused to follow them. Hyperfocused on finding herself a rabbit to proudly bring home to her hungry clanmates. Add to that the bragging rights when she visited with Blazefang. How proud of her he would be.

Narrowly avoiding stepping on a dry stick, Duskrose caught the fresh scent of her prey. Moving away from the drier brush, Duskrose managed to pinpoint the small brown creature. The rabbit nibbled on roots, appearing content with its meal. Duskrose held back a purr of excitement, the hunt was on!

Moving about so she could have a straight shot toward Fawnspring, Duskrose bolted forward. Claws extended to aid in traction, she tried to flush the rabbit in the direction of her clanmate, but it was a poor attempt.

The rabbit dodge about the undergrowth with surprising agility given the different terrain. Duskrose kept chase but the rabbit outpaced her after a few well-timed corners. The orange she-cat stumbled with a sharp turn, sending herself tumbling over her paws. Claws digging painfully into the earth to stop herself from skitting in the earth.

"Mousedung!"She spat, rising up and giving herself a shake. "I lost it!" She called to alert Fawnsprings, anger seeping into her voice.

While Duskrose slipped ahead to track down their prey, Fawnspring checked her positioning within the shadowy roots of a young oak, making sure of her paw-placement and tail set. The petite she-cat waited, every nerve alive and ready to help in any way she could. Beige ears could detect the faintest sounds of movement nearby, and she seemed to tense even further - before a quick mental chiding relaxed her posture.

Fawnspring's ears pricked at the sudden low thumps of something heavy hitting the ground. Did Duskrose catch it herself? A twinge of guilt hit her, mixing with the gratitude over a successful kill. That is, until the older she-cat cursed nearby, causing Fawnspring to jump from the sudden burst of noise.

"Mousedung! I lost it!"

"That's alright," Fawnspring immediately found her hunting companion, giving the other she-cat a gentle supportive nudge with her shoulder (after Duskrose was back on all four paws, that is). "Rabbits aren't really easy for TreeClan cats to catch anyway." As if pulled by some magnetic force, Fawnspring's gaze flicked to the border, as if talk of rabbits might very well summon their moorland neighbors. "It was a good challenge though. We can try again later if you'd like?"

Dejected, Duskrose accepted Fawnspring's gentle nudge but did not embrace it. The dark cloud above her, ready to rage within her head. Thoughts of Blazefang came to her with the fading scent of rabbit on her nose. Could he have taught her? His damaged leg didn't seem to make for an easy time hunting but she knew he had been a mentor. Perhaps in his younger moons, before his accident and capture then escape. Funny how little she knew of his youth.

Her own memories of their time together were often filled with stolen moments and a general update. Their more romantic times few and far between. Not that it quelled her feelings for him, but did bring them into question. Perhaps it was infatuation like her brother insisted. A desperate cry for attention that had been answered with Blazefang. She used him to fill a void, he likely did the same. Not that had any ill feelings for him because of it, the failed hunt only reminded her of how different their lives would always be.

Fawnspring's suggestion to try the hunt again refocused her attention on the she-cat. Blinking away her distracted expression.

"No, it's not worth it. Let's hunt like normal like we are supposed to in the thickets with leaves under paw," Duskrose told her, parting from the she-cat with a flick of her tail as she led them back away from the border. They had no business hunting rabbits.
