Splash!
"Gosh darnnit!"

Along the shore of the river stood a small cat, poised to strike at the small fish in the waters close to it. Her paw was lifted before striking out to try and scoop a fish from the water again. The silver cat succeeded....succeeded at getting herself drenched that is. Her chest now wet from the splash she caused this time. "Wow....I feel like such a mouse-brain." The she-cat grumbled, staring at the water. She could see as plain as day that there were smaller fish swimming around the edges of the river bank but she just couldn't figure out how to go about getting one. She had thought it would be simple but maybe she had been wrong.

The small she-cat huffed, choosing to lay down on the bank versus try again. For the moment, she would watch the movement of the fish. Perhaps learning how they move would help her to figure out how to catch one. She hadn't had a whole lot of training with fishing but she wanted to build on the things she did learn out on her own. She had really hoped she could figure it out and impress her mentor with her self-taught skills. The only problem here was the fact that she was such a clutz. She screwed up so much it had become normal for her. This particular time, however, she was getting frustrated by it. She wanted to help the clan out in anyway she could and fishing was their main source of food. So she needed to figure something out here. While hunting furred critters would also help, she wanted to have the skills of the Rainclan cats before her.

"I know I can do this...." The she-cat stood up with a new determination sparkling in her eyes. She stood at the edge and watched carefully as silver flashed below her. There was one! The she-cat struck out with her paw, feeling something rub across the paw pads. She then scooped towards shore hoping to fling the little thing out of the water. To her surprise, she managed to send a small fish flying. But the fish flew further upstream right back into the water.
"Gaaaaah!"

Two sets of blue eyes watched the small she-cat as she tried to land a fish from a bush nearby. As the she-cat flung a fish upstream, a chuckle sounded from the owner of one of the sets of eyes. "You don't have much luck there, do ya?" A seal pointed tom stepped out of hiding and approached the she-cat. Behind him, a second tom emerged from the bush. This tom was a spotted, tricolor cat with brilliant blue eyes like the first.

"Leave her be Sparrowpaw. She's still learning just like us." The tricolor tom said, butting his brother with his head playfully. He smiled gently at her and gave her a respectful nod of his head. "Don't mind my brother. He's a big goof. I am Finchpaw. It's Littlepaw right? I've seen you in the den but I've never had the chance to interact with you before." He said sitting next to the water a little upstream from her. He gazed down, spotting the same fish she had.

"I was just playingggg." The other tom whined as his brother scolded him. "I'm Sparrowpaw!" He said with a sudden grin. Recovering quickly from being told not to do something.

Then there was a sudden splash from upstream as Finchpaw managed to land a minnow from the river water. He picked it up and carried it over to where Littlepaw and Sparrowpaw stood. He set it at their feet. "You have to be patient and know the precise moment to strike. They're quick little buggers."

Sparrowpaw rolled his eyes at his brother. He was just so serious all the time. He needed to have a little fun! "Let's have a competition! Let's see who can catch more!" Before the other two could answer him, Sparrowpaw went straight to the bank and started to try and fish something out of the water.

Finchpaw shook his head, glancing at Littlepaw. "He likes to make things into games. Might be fun though....what do you think?" The tom asked watching the small, silver she-cat.

Littlepaw jumped in surprise as she heard someone chuckle from behind her. She hadn't realized anyone was watching her horrible attempt at fishing. So that means they watched her just fling that fish right back into the water. 'Darnnit.' She could feel the skin under her fur flush in embarrassment. Now she would look like an idiot to whoever was spying on her.

Amber eyes turned just as a young tom emerged from the bush nearby. He was then followed by a second tom. Two cats were watching? Littlepaw could feel her heart drop to her paws. To make matter worse, she recognized the boys as two fellow apprentices. No doubt they would make fun of her from now on after this. "No. I'm such a clutz sometimes." She said with disappointment creeping into her voice.

'Sparrowpaw and Finchpaw. That's right.' She had seen the brothers in passing before but she had never socialized with them before. So this would be a first for her and of course the first impression she leaves is that of a total clutz that doesn't know what she's doing. "Yes. I'm Littlepaw. And sadly I don't know much about fishing just yet..." She meowed in reply to Finchpaw. While she had been shown the basics of hunting but she hadn't been taken on a fishing trip just yet. So she was going with her gut here.

A sudden splash upstream made the she-cat glance around Sparrowpaw. Finchpaw had managed to land a small minnow with no problem. How did he do that? How can she do it? Now she was tempted to ask the tom to teach her what he knew. But before she could say a word, Sparrowpaw chimed in about having a competition to see who could catch more. She frowned at this. She couldn't even catch one little fish let alone multiple.

"I might need some help then....I couldn't even handle one little fish let alone more than that." She felt like an idiot having to ask for help but she was determined to learn how to do this.

Sparrowpaw was off in his own little world while the other two spoke to one another. He was going to have fun with this regardless of whether they joined him. He stood poised on the bank of the river, watching. A minnow swam right beneath him, providing the perfect opportunity to snag it. The tom, who was way too excited, struck out too soon. The water he hit at splashing his chest. He made a face before trying again. He needed at least one fish!

Finchpaw, on the otherhand, was watching the embarrassed she-cat. If she didn't want to play Sparrowpaw's game she truly didn't have to. His brother could be overbearing at times so he wouldn't look down on her for refusing. Especially when she had such little training time with the water.

"Ah. I see, I see. Well we don't have to have any sort of competition then. My brother is a hard one to keep still so his games are his source of entertainment." He meowed. "I more or less let him go and join in here and there." The tom flashed the she-cat a friendly smile.

"I might need some help then....I couldn't even handle one little fish let alone more than that."

Finchpaw blinked as the she-cat asked for help with it. "Are you sure? You really don't have to feel obliged to appease him." The tricolored tom eyed her, wodnering if she really wanted to or was just saying that.

Littlepaw's ears swiveled in the direction of Sparrowpaw as she heard a splash. The tom was anxiously waiting on the bank, trying to catch himself a fish as well. But unlike her, he didn't get embarrassed by his miss. He continued with this determined look on his face like nothing had even happened. Perhaps she should think more like him and just focus on getting that fish. Typically she wasn't one to care what others thought but in this case she did make a fool of herself when she caught that fish and ended up flinging it right back into the water. But this time around, she was ready to try again. Giving up was not something this she-cat did willingly.

"Oh no. I really do want to try. I just need to learn the proper technique to do it." She assured the colorful tom. "And I don't mind playing games from time to time. Might make me focus harder on getting one of them." She smiled at him and stepped up a few tail-lengths down the bank from Sparrowpaw. She stared hard down into the water, catching the shimmer of a fish's scales almost immediately.

Her head turned to look towards Finchpaw. She then whispered, as if the fish would hear her. "What next?" She turned her head back to stare down the fish, watching them rock to and fro with the slight current in the water. Maybe if she learned their movements, she could pinpoint the precise moment to strike.

Finchpaw chuckled to himself. The small she-cat was a determined one, that was for sure. Despite being "clumsy," as she so says, she still pushed on. She almost reminded him of Sparrowpaw in that manner. While his brother found it hard to be serious about anything, he never gave up either. He pushed on like nothing would get him down. It was a trait he almost wished he had himself. While he thought he was strong, he was no where near like the two before him. He admired them both for that fact. They would both be great warriors despite their clumsiness and lack of seriousness.

Sparrowpaw, on the other hand, was still trying to hook himself a minnow when the she-cat joined him a little further down the bank. Blue eyes glanced at her as a grin curved onto his face. This would be so much fun! The tom found himself getting more excited and found it hard to keep still now. He always tried to get others to play his games and most of the time they just brushed him off like a pesky bug or something. So he was delighted to have someone join in.

Finchpaw joined his brother and new friend, standing along the bank between them. "You need to be patient and watch the fish. Try to guess where it's going to go when you strike out." He said as he lifted a paw, watching the little fish in the water below. He then struck out at the water, also missing his mark. He made a face. "You're not always going to get a fish....so don't get too down on yourself." His eyes turned to look at Littlepaw at that remark before looking back at the water.
