Even if the skies get rough I'm giving you all my love
Dawnlight poured into the camp. Heavily streaks of blue and purple covered the morning sky. Almost unwilling to greet the day, Valiantstride pressed his nose deeper into Skunkspots' fur. The sound of her breathing, a sweet lullaby, almost successful in luring him back to sleep. Yet just as his eyes closed tight again, a thick tail grazed his nose. Stifling a sneeze, the golden tabby's head shot up.
Greeted by the new greying face of Hawkfall, Valiantstride sighed. "I'm up," He replied, forcing his paws under him. He gave a parting lick to Skunkspots' ear before following Hawkfall out of the warrior's den. The larger tabby had always been an early riser, Valianstride never could quite understand. He preferred the late hours of dusk, just before the daylight disappeared.
"They are already up and they have eaten," Hawkfall informed him. They had agreed just the night before to take their apprentices out for some mock battle training. Thankful that his clanmate had the forethought to prepare the apprentices, he sheepishly took a mouse for a meal. Hawkfall seemed to be a natural at being a warrior. Valiantstride admired him for that.
Mouse devoured, Valiantstride joined up with the rest, greeting his apprentice Rowanpaw with a polite smile. "Ready?" He did not wait for a reply, instead he took the lead paws finding the well-worn path to the sandy plateau.
Their arrival remained unceremonial, Sunpaw having chatted the entire time with Hawkfall. Valiantstride didn't mind, enjoying the simplicity of youth, fewer worries, all ambition. What's not to like?
"Who can tell me the first rule about fighting an enemy cat?" His question drew the attention onto him, Hawkfall sidestepping away from his apprentice to join his fellow warrior.
Calico 314 hawkfall - my npc, stoic, helpful sunpaw - aqua npc, bossy Aqua - let me know if the use of sunpaw is not okay
Rowanpaw stretched luxuriously in her comfortable nest inside the Apprentice's den. She knew she was going out with Valiantstride today, so she was alert. She was ready. But, despite that, she was still relaxed. She wasn't going to waste her energy, until she needed it. She had no idea exactly what the mentor/apprentice pair would be getting up to, but she knew she'd probably need as much energy as she could spare.
Swiping a quick forepaw across one of her ears, she unfolded herself from her nest and decided to grab a quick bite to eat before awaiting her mentor. Sunpaw, an apprentice, like her, followed her out of the den, seemingly lost in thought. Picking up a mouse and devouring it in quick delicate bites, she pulled herself to a sit next to Sunpaw, awaiting their mentors.
Hawkfall saw them first, followed by Valiantstride. He seemed distracted this morning, but she wasn't offended; he must be preoccupied with planning their morning's training. Rowanpaw didn't even have time to mew her assent before she was scrambling after her mentor.
So much for saving energy...
She was so lost in her own thoughts, she barely heard Sunpaw and Hawkfall chatting between themselves. Should I be doing the same with Valiantstride? Quickening her pace slightly, to match his, she whispered into his ear "They talk loudly. They'd scare away the prey if we were hunting... but i'm guessing that's not what we're doing?"
His question, once the whole party had reached their destination, gave Rowanpaw pause. She blurted the first thing that came into her head.
Even if the skies get rough I'm giving you all my love
He chuckled at her answer. "Yes, thats important but a true warrior won't be fighting to kill. A warrior only need to defend against their attack. A lost life creates a ripple effect that will hurt us in the long run," His tone had shifted, eyes glancing toward Hawkfall. The proud brown tabby cleared his throat to add to Valianstride's statement. "When you fight against a rival warrior. It's important you aren't aiming to kill them. Accidents do happen but we want to keep those to freak things," His tail flicked before he stood, directing Sunpaw to stand a couple tail-lengths away.
"Today Hawkfall and I will show you both how to fight. We will spar together for a few rounds then you two will have a go," Valianstride pointed with his tail for Rowanpaw to sit opposite of the other mentor-apprentice duo.
"Ready when you are," Hawkfall widened his stance. preparing for Valianstride's first few moves. Comparably Valianstride remained a few whisker widths shorter than Hawkfall. What he lacked in strength he could make up with speed.
Deciding to dart about his opponent, Hawkfall reacted with reasonable agility. Hawkfall hailed from mixed lineage. Half RainClan, Half Stone an almost ideal combination of each Clan.
Able to catch Valianstride by surprise the toms tussled. Valiantstride landing a few weighed blows to the side of Hawkfall's head. The larger tom slower to recover with each blow. The odds were in Valiantstride's favor until a sharp kick sent him skidding, claws digging deep into the dirt for traction. Imposing as he stood over him, Hawkfall went in to pin Valiantstride and managed. Capturing Valiantstride shoulder against the ground, his hip pinned by Hawkfall's hindleg.
"Yield," He commanded, Valiantstride surrendered with a sharp nod. Hawkfall relaxed entirely, as if the fight hadn't occured. "What would you have done differently?" He turned to look at Rowanpaw, Hawkfall off with his own apprentice now.
