Lionstar The crown is getting heavy
But they've written my name in the stars The shallow marsh was uninhabitable. The heat of early greenleaf had dried it out into a dusty bed of sticks, frogspawn and sun-scorched grass; Lionstar preferred the sour smell of dried marsh mud to the sopping, half-drowned grass beds it had now become. The golden tom did not need to scale a tree and balance on a bough to see that NightClan had flooded; his field of view was limited, but many moons in the valley had given him the opportunity to learn and remember what happened during certain weather patterns.
If their own shallow marsh was flooded, then the same could absolutely be said for NightClan's wetter, marshier territory.
"Anything?" He mewed without turning, having heard the approaching pawsteps of a morning patroller. A hunting party was making use of the wildflower meadow, which had grown lush and full again after the rains.
"Some NightClan stench, but not as much as before." Yewfang replied, snorting. "Stale."
Lionstar felt a small ping of satisfaction. Yes, the flooding had to be bad in NightClan for them to neglect to scent mark the deer path - even if it was only slightly. Large golden paws, stained brown from the flood waters, retreated from the edge of the shallow marsh. "Mark our side as usual, but don't cross into the Deer Path. Their absence this morning isn't an open invitation for TreeClan to behave recklessly."
Clouds of midges hovered over the marshland, and Lionstar cut a swath through one cloud with a brusque sweep of the tail, leaving this damp patch of territory behind as he rejoined the dawn patrol. Yewfang tensed, and her party members nearly crashed into her. "Shhh!" she snapped, remorseless. "I hear something."
In just a few heartbeats, Lionstar heard it too.
It was like distant thunder, and he felt tremors rise up through the ground, his paw pads absorbing the sensation. Lionstar's stomach dropped. "Everyone scatter! Get to a tree!" It was rare, but when it happened, it often had poor consequences for the cat unlucky enough to be in the way. Fur bushed out, the dawn patrol flung themselves aside as a herd of deer stampeded through the forest.
Dirt and grass were tossed into the air by their sharp hooves, and Lionstar gritted his teeth, gripping onto the bark partway up a tree trunk, relying on strength to keep him in place when he'd been unable to get to the bough in time. What's chasing them? he wondered. Deer, for all their size, were skittish creatures. They'd just as soon run from a single Clan cat as--
Two screams pierced the air almost at once.
Yewfang had shrieked in pain as hooves cut into her pelt and crushed her legs and back; the fall from the tree had stolen the breath from her body, the she-cat left in the path of the deer. One young deer tripped over Yewfang, but it wasn't the source of the second scream.
Lionstar's golden eyes widened in horror. A monstrous shape had appeared behind the stampede, terrible jaws clamped around the neck of a youngling deer, dragging it to the ground with savage strength - even while the thing's dying cries mingled with Yewfang's moans of pain. Blood stained the lynx's fur from muzzle to chest to paws, wild eyes snapping up from its fresh kill to realize it wasn't alone.
Demon bared reddened teeth, spraying flecks of blood with a malevolent hiss.
The flooding had diminished the deer's grazing grounds, and Demon had gone where the prey had gone -away from NightClan's territory. Lionstar dropped to the forest floor with a heavy thud, his paws stinging but his stance set wide, fur bushed out as he squared off against the lynx. "Finchcloud! Get Yewfang and get out of here!" He couldn't take his eyes off of Demon, who was now crouched over the dead deer, muscles bunching under a rain-damp pelt.
We don't want your fresh kill, monster. Just let us go in peace! Lionstar's breath froze as Demon lurched for Finchcloud and Yewfang, smelling her wounds. Lionstar lunged into the space between them, the deer's blood soaking into his paws as he intercepted. Demon's hot breath washed over him, the lynx snarling; a massive limb struck out to knock Lionstar off his feet. Thick golden fur protected him from Demon's claws - but the impact flung him against a nearby oak, the breath squeezed out of him in a wretched gasp.
Ears ringing, spine screaming, Lionstar staggered back to his paws and threw himself at his opponent.
Anything to buy his Clanmates some time to escape. Demon would not give up the deer; if anything, the valley's oldest foe set a murderous eye upon the patrol as if Demon intended to start his own fresh kill pile. I've been building up all these kingdoms for so long

Timberfrost The story's getting old but my heart is getting colder The multitude of noises faded into the background as blood pumped quickly through the massive tabby's form. Ears angled forwards and frosted gaze trained upon the commotion falling all around the group of Treeclanners. The deer were scattering in all directions as the last of them bowled over Yewfang's fallen, broken form below the trees.
Muscles rippled under the brown and black stripped pelt of the she-cat with each, perfectly precise movement. Her long claws sank into the moist branch, the wide length holding her size with ease as she surveyed the trouble below her. The warrioress had shimmied up a tree the second the noise of hoof beats upon the forest floor.
If the deer were fleeing, something was chasing them.
Frozen cerulean pools widened ever so slightly as the massive, monstrous form of Demon lunged from the misty shadows to bring down it's choice of prey. But the moaning form of Yewfang also snagged it's attention, her blood tainting the morning air with the heavy scent of iron and fear.
The ever dutiful warrior wasn't about to let this monster feed on her clanmate, and with Lionstar's yowl Finchcloud would need all the time he could to drag her broken form back to camp without being tracked. Slinking farther towards the edge of her branch, Timberfrost grew closer to the Lynx that Lionstar had so foolishly launched himself at.
What a good way to get yourself killed... The thought was almost a snarl in her mind as the massive tabby bunched her muscles and leaped down from her hidden spot among the tree's wide green spread. A icy cold battle cry left her muzzle as it parted, sharp fangs bright against her dark tabby maw. Her ambush landing as Demon was preoccupied with the massive form of Lionstar in front of his face.
Timberfrost's heavy form slammed into the larger feline, while not being enough to drive it from it's paws, she managed to make it stagger a few steps from the impact. Though momentarily startled, the monstrous cat soon realized that the tabby she-cat was latched onto his back, long claws sunk deep into it's pelt to keep her there. Within seconds however, the Lynx went from trying to buck the tabby off to dropping it's left side in an attempt to roll over and crush her completely. Demon's actions too slow for Timberfrost's quick moving mind, the she-cat launched herself to the right, avoiding both flailing limbs and jaws as she did so to land on her feet.
Wild golden eyes caught sight of Yewfang and Finchcloud once the Lynx found it's paws again, a dangerous growl within it's throat. Until a yowl split the air. Timberfrost had darted in close to slice her long claws down across Demon's eye, splattering crimson blood against the floor before she leaped back from an outstretched paw once more. It's head swung to pierce both Timberfrost and Lionstar with one dangerous golden eye, the other currently shut as blood dripped into it. "Over here foxdung." Her sharp tone was as cold as ice, frosted cerulean pools hard with battle and intensity.
She had his attention again, good. Timberfrost would prefer it that way, she was a protector, a warrior, it was her duty to keep the others safe as they tried to get away. It was her duty to fight along side Lionstar, to use her body as shield for all the Treeclanner's deeper in the forest. A snarl upon her maw, the growl rising deep from within her throat, Timberfrost stood proudly and strong.
Though fear was probably needed in this situation, the massive tabby felt none. Adernaline coursed through her blood and the excitement of dangerous battle brought the smallest fog of darkness around the edges of her cerulean iris'.

 R obinpaw trailed just behind Yewfang with a water vole in her jaws. The rodent had died without a squeak, with a neat snap of its neck. She was proud of the neat kill, but didn't want to look boastful in front of Yewfang and Finchcloud. She had accepted Yewfang's praise with a modest smile and a twirl of her tail in acknowledgement. She would definitely bring this vole straight to Appleshade and her kits, who were on the verge of being apprenticed and growing more restless by the day. At the mention of NightClan, her green eyes travelled in the direction of enemy territory. Why was NightClan's scent stale? Did the water drive them further upslope? The flooding wasn't so severe in TreeClan that they had to evacuate, and Robinpaw had assumed the same would be said for the volatile night hunters.
She nodded slightly when Lionstar spoke, the vole in her mouth preventing her from voicing a response. She would have buried it to keep it fresh for when they returned to camp, but the earth was soggy and soaked beneath her paws, and she figured it wasn't the best condition for digging. She stuck close by Finchcloud's side, now large enough that she nearly reached her mentor's shoulder. The air was humid and heavy with the recent rains, and Robinpaw wasn't a fan of how damp her pelt felt in the mist. Even more irritating were the clouds of flies that were determined to feast on her freshkill before any of her clanmates got the chance. She flicked them away with a white paw- then crashed into Yewfang, who had abruptly halted in front of her. Her vole dropped from her jaws and plopped onto the soggy earth, and Robinpaw was just bending to pluck it back up again with a flash of irritation when Yewfang's warning words sent a chill down her spine.
Confusion clouded her thoughts as the rumble of thunder sounded in the distance... but, was that thunder? Robinpaw didn't even get the chance to scramble up a tree. The deer burst from the forest, blind in their wild panic, hooves flying and kicking up dirt in their wake. Robinpaw rolled to the side, ducking down behind a log as the world turned to churned mud around her. A single deer leaped over the log where she hid, and Robinpaw flattened herself to the ground, heart racing.
A shriek of agony cut across the thunder of hooves, and Robinpaw's eyes wildly focused on Yewfang, who had been trampled by several of the deer. Her heart went cold, and she scrambled forward on her belly. "Yewfang!" She hissed to her clanmate, but flinched backwards when another deer stumbled over the fallen warrior. What frightened her even more than that shriek of pain was the fact that Yewfang was so silent now. Her paws trembled with the urge to run to Yewfang, but she knew to do so would be suicide, she'd be trampled in seconds.
Moments later, the sharp hooves were suddenly not the only danger Robinpaw had to fear. A snarl cut the air like a lightning strike, and her eyes fell on a hulking shape that was clutching a dying deer in its fangs. The calico apprentice stiffened in shock and fear. It was like nothing she had ever seen before, had a size she hadn't imagined any cat could reach. But this... thing... wasn't a cat. Her fur bristled wildly as the monster let out a guttural hiss, tufted ears flattened in a terrifying expression of rage. Dread seething deep in her stomach, Robinpaw felt as though every part of her had gone numb with fear. When Finchcloud shot for Yewfang, she hurled herself after him, knowing that they could drag the wounded she-cat far better with two of them. Her claws unsheathed in her panic, her fear scent thick in the air. Just like the vole. She thought with a jolt. She heard the scuffle of pawsteps, and caught the blur of motion as the lynx launched towards them. She tensed, a wild plan to slash the monster's face with her claws to defend Yewfang and Finchcloud flashing into her thoughts. Before she even finished processing the attack, it was over. Lionstar bowled into the giant cat, his thick golden fur bushed out to twice its usual size. Shaking her head in a desperate attempt to clear her alarm, Robinpaw bent to grab Yewfang by her scruff. She wasn't about to run away. Her eyes hardened. Yewfang needed help.

TREECLAN WARRIOR FINCHCLOUD Got that sunshine in my heart Finchcloud had taken the chance to give Robinpaw a lesson in stealth, encouraging her to sneak up on him while Yewfang and Timberfrost had gone to check the NightClan border, one eye on Lionstar as the tom surveyed the stretch of enemy territory. From what Finchcloud had seen, most of NightClan's land was now underwater, and from the report Yewfang gave, it seemed that none of them had felt the need to check this border since then.
All the better, the young ginger tom thought to himself, standing as the patrol started to move on. Focused on his apprentice, Yewfang's warning was the first hint he got of something wrong, but he was quick enough to pick up the thunder of hooves headed right for the six. There was just a heartbeat between Lionstar's warning and the panicked stampede's arrival, just enough time for Finchcloud to hurl himself toward a tree, following Robinpaw's tortoiseshell tail.
Twin shrieks rang through the air, and Finchcloud whipped his head around, front claws digging into the bark of the tree. His tail fluffed as he spotted Yewfang sprawled on the ground, blood oozing from her black-and-white pelt. She wasn't moving. More terrifying, however, was the appearance of the lynx; the huge cat was clinging to one of the smaller deer, dragging it down and killing it with a bite to the neck. The deer's blood spotted his muzzle as he lifted his head, cruel eyes fixing on Yewfang. Finchcloud bounded over to her, barely aware of Robinpaw at his side, and every hair on his body bushed when Demon sprang at them, eyes widening as time seemed to slow down, taking in the fangs and claws of the lynx hurling himself at the three.
Lionstar and Timberfrost intercepted him, drawing the devil cat's attention, and with an effort Finchcloud shook himself from his trance, but he couldn't make his fur lie flat. Get Yewfang and go, Lionstar had said; dipping his head with the intent to grab his former apprentice by the scruff, Finchcloud paused when he realized Robinpaw was already trying to drag the injured she-cat away from the fight. "Robinpaw- Lionstar told you to get up a tree! Go on!" Shoving his head against her middle, Finchcloud pushed the apprentice toward the nearest tree. "Get up there and don't come down until you're told!"
He didn't have time to make sure she obeyed, only hoping that she would. Gripping Yewfang's scruff and lifting her as gently as possible, Finchcloud headed for the cover of the undergrowth, forcing himself to not stop and look back at the battle that raged between his Clanmates and the lynx that was a constant threat to the Clans. Her breaths were ragged, the scent of her blood rising around him in a choking cloud, and there was no trace of the fiery young cat he'd come to know. Her hind legs trailed limply beneath him; she made no attempt to struggle free of him.
A low moan rose from her throat, and Finchcloud hesitated, unsure if he was causing her more pain. His ears flicked back, the sounds of the fight muffled by trees now, and he took the risk of letting her go, gently placing her head on the ground and stepping back. "Yewfang?"
She didn't answer; she didn't move. The moan trailed off, and her eyes glazed over. There was the slightest jerk of her front paws, and then nothing. Stunned, Finchcloud stared down at her for a moment, unable to grasp at first that this was happening. Too fast- just a few minutes ago she'd been walking, talking, breathing. Alive. And now.
"Yewfang... no, StarClan, no." Trembling now, grief welling up within him, Finchcloud bent to touch his nose to the dead she-cat for a moment. "I'm sorry... I'll get you home."
Taking her scruff in his jaws once more, blinking rapidly at the trees around him that wanted to blur, Finchcloud carefully carried Yewfang's body toward the camp.

It was just supposed to be a routine patrol. Checking the border with Nightclan, making sure they weren't trying anything risky. Little did Foxfur know, they were in for a big and dangerous surprise.
As he marked Treeclan's side of the border, a bit of a distance from the main patrol, a loud noise caused the Somali warrior to lift his head up and look back towards the other Treeclanners in confusion. That confusion quickly turned to panic as he realized that deer had run over Yewfang. That panic quickly turned to dread as he made out a nightmarish figure behind the deer. A creature he had only ever heard about from fear-stricken warriors returning from patrol: Demon.
Lionstar and Timberfrost reacted much more quickly than Foxfur did. For a few moments, he stood there, afraid and at a loss of what to do. His last truly dangerous encounter was in his kithood, in which he had gotten his ear torn up by a ravenous rogue. But this? Even against three warriors of Treeclan, Demon still had a good chance of beating them. They needed a miracle to get out of this.
A few figures running away caught Foxfur's attention. Robinpaw attempting to drag Yewfang, who then was taken by Finchcloud. They would be fine. Foxfur turned his attention away from the trio of cats, unaware that Yewfang was taking her last breaths.
Right now, his leader and Timberfrost needed the most help. You can't be sheltered forever. Foxfur was a cat who preferred to partake in life's pleasures, but he couldn't ignore his clanmates in need now.
Foxfur began to run over, his stride increasing with every step. Faster and faster he went, his eyes narrowing as he got closer to Demon. This was real, and Foxfur was completely ready to face the situation head-on. Literally.
As he pounced at Demon, the ginger tom slammed his head full force into the lynx's head, hearing something snap in the process. Backing away quickly to get his bearings, Foxfur looked at Demon and saw that something in his mouth was bleeding. He must have knocked some teeth out. That will hopefully be helpful.
Timberfrost was on the other side of Demon, throwing taunts at him. Both warriors had done some damage, and both warriors would confuse the lynx so that it would be unaware of the next attack coming for it.
"How do you expect to get the ladies with an attitude like that?" he challenged, causing Demon to swerve his head towards the Somali tom. Lucky for Foxfur, Timberfrost was also throwing insults, causing him to look constantly between the two warriors, unable to make a decision on who to attack. It was as close to immobilized as he would get for now.

But they've written my name in the stars Lionstar took a step, and something between his shoulder blades screamed in protest. The tom, already taking hard breaths, visibly cringed, spots dancing in front of narrowed golden eyes as he struggled to regain control. Expecting hot breath upon him at any second, Lionstar was instead spared by his Clanmates coming to his aid. Timberfrost was StarClan's gift to the forest as far as Lionstar was concerned, the massive tabby she-cat landing on Demon's back, working over the behemoth and subsequently buying Lionstar some time.
Did Yewfang make it out? The golden tom stole a glance beyond the carcass of the deer to see Finchcloud and Robinpaw's retreating forms. Thank StarClan.
A blur of ginger fur collided with Demon's maw, and Lionstar's stomach convulsed in horror at the unexpected spray of blood - but Foxfur, staggering back, was unharmed - and feeling well enough to taunt the monster lynx with a timely quip. Lionstar rolled his eyes. He needs a refresher on battle techniq--
Demon snarled and lunged, no longer weighed down by indecision. A true predator knew hesitation was the difference between lost prey and a full stomach. Lionstar forced himself into a run, desperate to close the distance between the monstrous lynx and the young warrior in his path. "Foxfur move!" He rasped, even as the crushing press of claws triggered a startled yelp from Foxfur, the warrior pinned to the earth beneath a single bloodied paw.
Demon brought his maw a mouselength from Foxfur's face, intending to rip his head right from his shoulders. Lionstar crashed into the monster with all the strength he could muster, kicking off with powerful hind legs to throw the fullness of his weight into Demon's chest. Lionstar latched on with teeth and claws, curling his body under Demon's jaw and around his neck to avoid the wretched, stinking mouth. The world proceded to spin in nauseating jerks as Demon backed up, spitting with rage and releasing Foxfur to concentrate his efforts on clawing Lionstar free.
Lionstar hung on, tasting only fur even after several attempts to bite at Demon's throat. It was not like killing or wounding a prey animal. The size difference was too great. It was like fighting a living, breathing embodiment of power. StarClan, he had never felt so helpless.
Claws punctured his flank, ripping skin and fur away from the sturdy muscle underneath. Lionstar yowled in agony, his hold slipping from Demon's neck as he was ripped free, a claw left in the lynx's thick fur. Stars exploded in his head as he hit the dirt, the jagged wounds on his flank weeping red. TreeClan's leader struggled to rise, but his legs would not obey the heart raging in his breast. Move, he snarled at himself, don't just lay down and die.
With a herculean effort, Lionstar forced himself into a half crouch - tasting his own blood as his jaw hit the ground again, legs collapsing. No, not here. Darkness creeped across his vision like a slow, dreadful fog. Sound muffled, even the blood pulse of his heart in his ears dimmed to nothingness.
StarClan's forests beckoned, and he was helpless but to than answer the call. I've been building up all these kingdoms for so long

Demon's not gonna back off his kill now that it's just him versus two cats  Get Lionstar near the Great Maple and he'll be able to wake up enough to haul himself the rest of the way home! As long as he gets to lean on a couple warriors, of course. |

It was within those seconds that it felt like time had completely slowed down. With Foxfur's normally passive form trapped underneath massive paws right before the massive figurehead of Treeclan threw himself, literally, within the devil's mouth. The massive predator practically dealing with the leader the same way a normal cat would do a fly.
The harsh scent of iron met the massive tabby's nose, blood of her own pumping within her ears as her mind quickly tried to think out some way of escaping such a predicament. There was no doubt that her leader was about to loose a life, if his stilling form hadn't already passed to meet with Starclan.
"Foxfur! Take Lionstar to the Great Maple!" Timberfrost's cold tone rang out sharply as she darted forwards. She had to act quickly, and she wasn't going to let Foxfur meet his demise as she was sure Yewfang had earlier due to such unfortunate circumstances within Treeclan's normally safe forests.
She'd use herself.
The massive warrior held strongly to the belief that she was a shield for Treeclan. She'd put her body and life on the line to make sure others were safe, and right now both the ginger coated Somali and their leader needed a shield between them and the prowling Lynx. By this point, Finchcloud, Robinpaw and Yewfang should have been far enough away to be safe...
Race past the massive feline, Timberfrost moved to swipe her claws across the leathery pad of his nose. It earned a sharp snarl from Demon as she tried to dart past him, but she wasn't quick enough during this encounter. Her massive paws left the forest floor as she went tumbling into a tree not too far away. Searing, white hot fire ripped through her body as blood quickly welled up from massive slices along her left hind-leg and flank.
Frosted cerulean regained focus as the lynx turned it's attention from the others to where Timberfrost lay bleeding and slightly dazed at the base of a tree. Quickly pulling herself up, the massive warrior ignored the sharp warning of tenderness as she put weight on that paw. The only way she was escaping from such a situation was to use all four feet, even if the pain was almost unbearable. Warm blood was quickly matting up her tabby striped pelt along the red, welting marks. From behind the clunky form of the lynx she could see Foxfur dragging the larger form of Lionstar away into the undergrowth.
"Come and get me Foxbrain." She snarled, tail lashing before she turned and darted off in the opposite direction. Ignoring the intense pain racking her body with each stride, the massive tabby continued to run with as much speed as she could muster. There was a massive, chest shaking growl that followed after her before the heavy thuds of paws. She didn't look behind her, so she couldn't actually tell if the demonic feline was following her.
Hanging a quick right, the massive tabby dove head first into a thicket of bramble bushes in an attempt to find some cover that she knew the larger cat wouldn't be able to follow her in. Thorns ripped at the short, dense pelt of Timberfrost including her fresh wound which caused her to grit her teeth against the pain. Pressing against the bramble protected trunk of a tree, the she-cat lowered herself to her belly as she listened to the now silent forest around her. Even the birds and rodents and fled the arrival of the massive mountain dweller.
Ears flickered as a massive yowl sounded, though nothing else came after it as the sound of thudding paw-steps lightened as Demon went about his business now that the clan cats were out of his way. It was highly likely he went back to his downed deer, something of that size could have fed the clan for several days. Timberfrost lay there for a moment longer, the scent of her own blood strong as she ignored both that problem and the intense pain within her leg.
Shifting her body, the massive warrior finally picked herself up to all four paws before making her way back through the prickles and pokes of the bramble thicket she had hidden herself in. This time her gait wasn't so forced as she fell into a limp to keep too much pressure off of that right hind-leg. Making a wide circle of the territory, the Treeclanner slowly headed towards the Great Maple where she hoped that Foxfur and Lionstar had successfully made it without any problems. The adrenaline was slowly wearing out of the beastly fighter, each step sending another sharp sting through her body.

H er paws burned against the ground from all the skidding and swerving to avoid the deer, and the short run she had taken to Yewfang's crumpled form seemed to have scraped her paw pads raw. Yewfang felt like prey in her mouth, still and with the raw tang of blood in the air. Sound seemed muffled around her, like they were submerged underwater and all the chaos and violence was happening somewhere above them. But she heard Finchcloud clearly when he shoved her so hard she almost stumbled. "Robinpaw- Lionstar told you to get up a tree! Go on!" His voice was sharp, and her heart leaped into her throat as the image of him swam before her eyes. "Get up there and don't come down until you're told!" She shook her head immedietly, an icy determination in her eyes. She had never disobeyed Finchcloud before, or Lionstar for that matter. Seeing Yewfang injured seemed to have awoken a new spirit in the rule-abiding she-cat. "I'm not abandoning you, or her!" She meowed firmly, her voice almost lost in the sounds of shrieks and the piercing roar of the battling lynx. "We can carry her back to camp quicker with two of us!" He could punish her later all he wanted. All the ticks in the world wouldn't discourage her from following her instincts, and her gut told her that running away was wrong. Never again.
She grabbed Yewfang by her lower back, helping her mentor drag her towards the potential safety of the forest cover. Yewfang's breaths were terrifying and comforting all at once. Terrifying, how ragged and uneven they were, like a fish trapped on the shoreline gasping for water. Comforting, that she was still breathing. Robinpaw was trembling, but determined to get Yewfang back to camp, back to Falconstorm, so he could work up some miracle of StarClan and get the young warrior back on her paws. It was this determination that gave her a steady step and strength enough to drag the larger warrioress through the cumbersome undergrowth. Ferns and branches snagged on their pelts, but still they trudged on. Yewfang moaned softly, and Finchcloud halted. Robinpaw stopped a heartbeat later, releasing the clump of Yewfang's pelt that she'd held onto as gently as she was able. Robinpaw was breathing heavily, and she flattened her ears. She didn't know what to do, what to say. She didn't want to even breathe lest she remind Finchcloud that she was there, and she hadn't listened to him or her leader when they'd told her to run.
"Yewfang?" She heard Finchcloud whisper. And then all at once, Yewfang gave one final twitch, and didn't make another sound. "No. I can get Falconstorm. I can run back to camp and fetch him." She protested, all too aware that Yewfang's chest no longer rose and fell. She was so terribly still. But that couldn't be it, it couldn't be. They could still help her! She repeated this in her mind, rattled by the sight of her mentor's all-too-familiar grief. But it didn't look familiar on Finchcloud's ginger tabby face. "You're gonna be okay, Yewfang." She mumbled hopelessly as she took up the she-cat again. She knew deep down in her heart that Finchcloud was the only one who heard her.

Almost within an instant of Foxfur's taunting of the large lynx, Demon leaped upon the ginger warrior, pinning him to the ground and snarling. Fear shot up through the tom's eyes as they widened, staring into Demon's open and toothy mouth as it descended towards him. As his death neared.
Foxfur couldn't tear his eyes away from his impending doom, horrified at the crimson droplets gathering at the ends of Demon's fangs and falling onto the Somali tom's face. It was not deer blood.
All that fear quickly turned to confusion as the weight was abruptly removed from Foxfur's body. Staggering to his feet, Foxfur looked to see what had caused Demon to abandon the kill and froze in horror at what his eyes were met with.
His leader. Lionstar.
Lionstar had saved Foxfur's life.
But not his own.
Blood flew around the clearing as Demon shook the large leader back and forth. Lionstar's blood. After the lynx dropped him, TreeClan's ever-strong leader crumpled to the ground. He was...dead.
"Foxfur! Take Lionstar to the Great Maple!"
Timberfrost's command jolted Foxfur out of his stupor, and the tom waited until the she-cat began working on distracting Demon to bolt over to Lionstar's mangled body. "He's got more lives. He's got more lives," he mumbled to himself. But what if he didn't have more lives? Foxfur wasn't really one to count how many times TreeClan's leader had died. He had just always assumed Lionstar would be there forever. What if his leader had wasted his last life on saving Foxfur?
Shaking away the thoughts, Foxfur bent down and grabbed Lionstar by the scruff, dragging him as quickly as possible to the Great Maple. Lionstar was much larger than the ginger warrior, but the adrenaline coursing through Foxfur's veins made the exhaustion seem like nothing. All he could think about was getting Lionstar to safety.
Once they had reached the Great Maple, Foxfur dragged Lionstar over to a soft patch of grass by the roots and let him go. The ginger tom took a few steps back and sat down. "Please wake up. Your last death shouldn't be like this..."

Lionstar The crown is getting heavy
But they've written my name in the stars Death embraced him in a grip almost as tight as Demon's jaws. He did not wake gently in the land of spirits, but came to with a gasp and the scent of blood clinging to his coat. To Lionstar's confusion, his pains were still fresh and harshly throbbing, not about to let him forget their presence. Death felt an awful lot like the life he'd just left behind.
The forest, as if to echo his confusion, was silent as a boneyard, shadows long and stretching between dark trees, smudged with fog. Lionstar's stomach clenched, dread squeezed his innards tight and unsheathed his claws as a scent - a wretchedly familiar scent - turned the bewildered down-tilt of his muzzle into a scrunched snarl.
Grayowl.
Some of the fog condensed to charcoal, coalescing into feline shape while something low and burning, like a corpse-fire, lit up two points on the cat's face where it's eyes should have been. The wind seemed to whisper miss me? as Lionstar's hackles raised.
"Get out," he seethed, even as his body punished him for the battle stance he adopted. Without waiting for Grayowl to respond, Lionstar struck out at the spectral tom, his claws sweeping through fog and fire into nothingness.
"Lionstar!"
Suddenly, the stars reappeared and the scent of rotten earth and hated foe rescinded, the pain of his injuries briefly ebbing as StarClan's light returned to the forest. Clarity returned to Lionstar's eyes in a sudden flash of gold. Grayowl. Dark Forest. He spun quickly, seeking the voice of reason that had called him out of the shadowy madness of the other place.
"Sandfur," he breathed in hushed disbelief, his heart running to meet his mother even as his paws struggled to push him into a heavy pace. Sandfur's purr reached him, the warmth of her presence seeping into him like a patch of sunlight as he pressed the top of his head against his mother's flank.
Her death had been so long ago...
"My son, my little Lionkit," she purred, standing back to get a good look at him. Her expression was touched by sadness. "You must go back, your Clanmates need you. Hold on to your strength. One heinous creature has become nothing but bones and memories, but your troubles are not over. Keep your eyes open."
"Is it someone in the Clan? Or are you talking about Darkstorm?" He demanded, ice gripping his throat. Was there no end to TreeClan's interpersonal troubles?
Sandfur blinked at him mournfully. "Just keep your eyes open. I love you, Lionstar." Her voice got fainter and fainter as the world of the living yanked him back to the breathing, pulsating forest he had died in.
Be careful...
Lionstar woke with a gasp, coming back to reality with something like a pained grunt, his vision wobbling like a robins' nest in a storm, pitching to the side until he took a few deep, steadying breaths. "Wh-Where...?" The sight of a familiar ruddy-ginger face, Foxfur, snapped him out of his half-crouched daze, his wounds still howling for treatment. "Demon! Where is he? Where is everyone else? Yewfang--"
The world yawed left, and Lionstar had to plant his feet to keep his balance. StarClan, he felt... chewed up and spit out. He hated the gap in his memory losing a life left him with, and he studied Foxfur quickly, relieved, at least, to see one cat come out of this relatively unscathed. "Tell me what's happened," he mewed gruffly, anxiety pulsating behind his eyes like a migraine, threatening to overwhelm him. Where are the others? I've been building up all these kingdoms for so long
It's good to be king OOC: Feel free to help Lionstar get back to camp or meet up with Finchcloud, Robinpaw & Yewfang (or bring in some NPC help). |
