Greenleaf 11, 6
A half moon hangs over the valley in a sky clear of any of the day’s lingering rainclouds. The night is cool and refreshing, which makes for a pleasant journey to the Moon Tree for each of the Clan’s medicine cats.
Due to the showers on and off, it had left the growing night rather cool as opposed to the blistering heat the valley had been experiencing as of late. Though the ground was soft underpaw, small pebbles and dirt stuck to Ebonypaw's pads as she padded only slightly behind her mentor's smaller form. Despite the small annoyance of getting dirty, the proper feline was pleased with the less stuffy heat, as her long coat only worsened that problem. With their sights set towards the mountains, both Medicine Cats of Stoneclan were en route towards their desitnation, the Moon Tree. It was another half-moon tonight, and as tradition stated, healers of each clan joined up for their own little meeting under the stars. Pale green eyes were trained ahead, mind full of curiosities for the night as she and Sandblaze were accompanied by Cloverspring, the ever grumpy Cobrashadow and one of the newer apprentices, Poppypaw, who happened to be bouncing along beside the patrol like an over excited frog.
Attending with them: Cobrashadow, Cloverspring and Poppypaw
He'd made sure everyone was fed and hydrated and eaten what strengthening herbs he could manage before they headed out. The sun was still down, he'd left early to arrive on time to the meeting. "If you can't be nice to the other medicine cats, then don't speak at all." He told the two warriors he'd chosen to come with him. Amberwing and Timberfrost. Really, he didn't need the escort, but Lionstar's word was law so he dealt with it. Had to protect their medicine cat, he understood. They arrived in good time, thankfully without incident, and Falconstorm left his escort behind to await the arrival of all the medicine cats. Hopefully, the drama going on between TreeClan and NightClan wouldn't extend to their medicine cats.
Attending with him: Amberwing and Timberfrost
The agreeable weather of the day gave way to a calm night, however as Smokefur and Shadowchaser left for their half moon meeting they were feeling far less balanced. The events that had transpired at the most recent gathering gave all of the cats present reason to be wary, this would be the first time all the clans had met since the event after all. With the end of their journey in sight the Nightclanners enter the fray and hope that the medicine cat's code holds, and rivalries are truly stood apart from tonight.
Attending with them: Cinderfur and Frostjaw.
A dampness hangs in the air, a reminder of the day's intermittent showers. The ginger and white healer pads quietly near the front of the patrol, just behind Icefeather. Behind her, given some undisturbed sibling time, Tigerpaw listens quietly to Lynxfire, the second escort. The surrounding air is warm but not unpleasant, and the journey passes uneventfully and unhurriedly. That is, until their destination draws into view. With a little more bounce to her step, Kindleflare thanks their escorts and hurries to join the other medicine cats, dark amber eyes cast backwards patiently in a silent invitation to Tigerpaw.
Attending with them: Lynxfire and Icefeather
Dewfrost is the last to arrive, accompanied by an escort of three warriors. There is little chatter on the way to the Moon Tree and she dismisses the three with a silent wave of her tail as she spots her peers waiting, following them inside the cavern and offering nods of greeting to each, taking up a spot near Shadowchaser.
Attending with her: Morningstorm, Ivoryfoot, Mistsong

A small flicker of disappointment washed over her as she realized LightningClan was the first to arrive. That didn't last long, however, for dark amber eyes could see Dewfrost as the RainClan medicine cat approached the Moon Tree. Curling her tail in relief, she butted her head reassuringly against Tigerpaw's flank before taking a seat where the remaining medicine cats would undoubtedly join them. As RainClan's younger medicine cat's paw steps finally brought her to the two LightningClan healers, Kindleflare's tail lifted from where it rested on her paws in a friendly wave. "H-Hello, D-Dewfrost. I h-hope R-RainClan is w-well." She mewed gently, offering the other she-cat a smile.
Sandblaze and Ebonypaw were next to arrive, and the ginger and white she-cat offered both StoneClan healers a similar greeting. Her amber eyes cast out toward the horizon, obviously searching for something. She had a nervous air about her that exceeded her usual nervousness. But the reasoning behind her strange energy remained a mystery. A distraction appeared the the form of TreeClan's larger healer, a purr blooming in her chest as Falconstorm arrived and settled down next to her. "F-Falconstorm!" She exclaimed happily, pushing her nose against his sturdy shoulder. "H-Hi!"
The clearing seemed to fill up quickly following Falconstorm's arrival. Each familiar face was greeted with a polite and friendly smile, the nervous medicine cat making idle chatter as best she could with how distracted her mind was. As the greetings between medicine cats began to fizzle out, the ginger and white she-cat gathered herself and stood, clearing her throat softly. Glancing at Falconstorm to find strength in the big tom's presence, the LightningClan shivered excitedly as she faced the other medicine cats. "B-Before w-we h-head in, I h-have one a-announcement I w-would like to m-make."
Dark amber eyes shifted to Tigerpaw briefly, a brilliant smile spreading over her maw. "I, K-Kindleflare, medicine cat o-of LightningClan, c-call upon my w-warrior ancestors to look d-down on th-this ap-pprentice." She did her absolute best to steady her voice, feeling a flurry of excitement at getting to speak these words. She wondered if her apprentice was feeling a similar joy as she. "T-Tigerpaw has trained h-hard to understand the w-ways of a medicine c-cat, and with y-your help he w-will serve his C-Clan for many m-moons. T-Tigerpaw, do y-you p-promise to uphold th-the ways of a m-medicine cat, to s-stand apart from r-rivalry between C-Clans, and t-to protect a-all cats equally, e-even at the c-cost of your l-life?"
A moment of silence for the young tom to speak his part. And when he answered, she couldn't help the purr in her voice as she continued. "Th-Then by the p-powers of StarClan, I g-give you y-your true name a-as a m-medicine cat. T-Tigerpaw, from this moment you will be known as T-Tigereye. StarClan h-honors your kindness and d-dedication t-to helping o-others, and we w-welcome you a-as a f-full medicine c-cat of L-LightningClan." Stepping forward, she pressed her nose to his forehead, the purr still rumbling in her chest as she whispered. "S-Surprise, T-Tigereye. A-And c-congratulations."
As she stepped back, her voice joined the chanting of those who called his new name. |

Though he was occupied in conversation with his sister, which was mostly one-sided with her talking and he listening, when the group finally came into view of the Moon Tree cavern and Kindleflare suddenly hurried onward, Tigerpaw quickly excused himself from his sister’s company to lengthen his stride after his mentor. There was an eagerness about the older medicine cat as if she was anticipating something in particular, which was all the more noticeable in that it was unusual. Even with his first horrifying experience at the Moon Tree, Tigerpaw had come to enjoy medicine cat meetings and the camaraderie of being able to discuss the things he was passionate about with cats who shared the same interests. Warriors generally cared little for herblore, and while he could certainly always talk to Kindleflare about such things, and he loved her as he loved any member of his family, it was still nice to have others to share with.
Kindleflare took to greeting each medicine cat as they arrived. Tigerpaw merely dipped his head to Dewfrost, the young she-cat had been rather withdrawn since her mentor’s death, not that he could blame her. He leaned just a little against Kindleflare at the thought of losing her, not even realizing he was doing it. Not for many more moons, he assured himself silently. Kindleflare was not as old as Swanfeather had been. Surely they had many more seasons together. His ears pricked forward as Sandblaze and Ebonypaw arrived and he offered the StoneClan apprentice a small smile, “Hello, Ebonypaw. Sandblaze,” he added on quickly, not wanting to seem rude for excluding the older tom from his greeting.
When Falconstorm arrived he again dipped his head respectfully. He knew Kindleflare was close friends with the TreeClan tom, but to be honest his large stature was rather intimidating to Tigerpaw. Logically he knew that the older tom would certainly not hurt him, but… he was just so big. When the NightClan medicine cats arrived, he was surprised to see Smokefur in attendance since she hadn’t been at the last meeting. But he supposed after the last gathering, maybe both medicine cats would be looking for some guidance for their Clan. Not that it was any of his business. He felt a little guilty just for thinking about it, ducking his head in greeting to the two NightClanners as if they might see his thoughts in his eyes.
When Kindleflare spoke up, he turned wide, curious amber eyes her way, wondering just what she was talking about. And then she started to say familiar words. They sounded like the words a Firestar had always spoken before…. His heart seemed to skip as he realized what she was doing. Excitement and anxiety coiled up in his chest as his mentor continued. Was he really ready? Was she sure? What if he wasn’t? There was a pause, expectant eyes on him as Kindleflare posed the question all Clan cats had to answer before they became recognized as full, adult members of the Clan. It might be worded a little different for medicine cats, but the expected answer was the same.
He reminded himself that Kindleflare would still be there. Just because he had earned his name didn’t mean he couldn’t ask for her help, didn’t mean he couldn’t still learn from her, didn’t mean he would be on his own. It took him a moment to find his voice, and he flushed under his pelt when it came out far higher pitched than intended, “I do.” But Kindleflare simply went on with the ceremony, for which he was grateful, and her own certainty in the ceremony was all he really needed to accept that maybe he was ready, maybe he had earned it. Tigereye. He closed his eyes as his mentor pressed her nose to his forehead, a rough purr catching in his throat as she congratulated him, “Thank you, Kindleflare.” He brushed his cheek against her shoulder, his anxiety over whether he was really ready for his name or not fading. He trusted his mentor’s judgment far better than his own, and if she thought he was ready then he must be. He drew in a deep, steadying breath and glanced around sheepishly as the other medicine cats called his new name, embarrassed by the attention. Even still, he couldn’t wait to tell Lynxfire and Sleetpaw. Ghost the Undead Goddess Justice @poptart Fawn BlooRey DVD

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams While the long coated feline didn't mind peppy personalities, she was glad to slip away from Poppypaw and her bouncing shenanigans as the younger healer followed her mentor up up towards where the other Medicine Cats were waiting to travel to the Moon Tree together.
Wide, flat paws made easy work of the rocky terrain, similar to that of Stoneclan's own barren lands. The larger Stoneclanner slipped in and out of the shadows as the licked at her lengthy, black pelt as Sandblaze led the away ahead.
Controlled excitement flickered within the pale gaze of Ebonypaw as the proper feline placed eyes upon Tigerpaw and his mentor. With a bow and a greeting, her attention soon turned to Falconstorm as the former warrior also made his way towards them. She repeated her respectful greeting towards the Treeclanner.
Before descending towards the waiting, oddly white tree within the mountains, Kindleflare stepped forwards and recited similar to that of a leader. Mossy orbs widened as Ebonypaw realized that Tigerpaw was receiving his full name at that point, Starclan watching from above as the stars glittered faintly.
Though she was younger, Ebonypaw was proud of Tigerp- Tigereye. He had worked hard to achieve this point and she was sure Kindleflare was even prouder of him, her nervous fidgeting was more noticeable than normal tonight. Youthful curiosity flooded the young apprentice's mind, wondering when she would get her own name.
And what it could possibly be.
"Congragulations, Tigereye." Ebonypaw mewed in that sharp tone of hers, giving a respectful nod and a soft nudge to the older tom as they moved to file towards the Moon Tree. With a flicker of her stubbed tail, she made her way towards the twisted, alabaster roots near where Sandblaze had chosen to lay down.
From the time she curled up she was whisked away to her dreams, breathing slowing as she fell into the darkness of unconsciousness.
When those pale green pools reopened, the large she-cat was shrouded in a silver light. The world around her was a star-studded landscape, out behind her stretched a glowing, barren field similar to that of Stoneclan's territory. In front of her grew a massive forest where the tips of the trees weren't even visible within their vastness.
Sitting up, Ebonypaw moved to run her rough, pink tongue across the lengthy fur of her chest. Ears flickered this way and that as she listened for movement while adjusting her appearance. No need to meet Starclan with ruffled feathers, it just wasn't prope-
A small squeak parted the large she-cat muzzle, a strange sound to hear from such a sizable feline. Each feather of black fur fluffed up as another, silent cat easily snuck up and spooked her while grooming. Sitting ridged for a moment, pale green pools blazed with annoyance and embaressement as they settled upon the culprit.
"Mintleaf!" Ebonypaw hissed slightly, taking a breath as her fur began to lie flat once more. The small gray feline was bouncing around almost as hyper actively as Poppypaw had been on their journey from home. The Starclanner's brilliant green gaze was glittering with amusement. "That was not funny."
"Oh, Ebonypaw, don't be such a grumpy old badger." Mintleaf said, flickering her tail sheepishly behind her as a permanent smile plastered her soft features. She was young to be apart of their ancestor's ranks, couldn't be more than Ebonypaw's one twelve moons old. Though sometimes the healer's guide acted far younger.
Ebonypaw, on the other paw, had been told her whole life she had the temperament of a cranky, old elder. Rabbitfur liked to tease her about it as a kit, and she had always shrugged it off with an ear flick.
"I don't come here to play around, I come here to communicate with you for the sake of my clan." Ebonypaw said after a moment, that proper tone of her sharp. The green of her eyes near emotionless as she gave a final lick to her chest before looking up to see a still smiling Starclan she-cat.
"You are allowed to have fun sometimes." Mintleaf mocked Ebonypaw's tone before giggling softly and flickering her tail. And just like that, the kit like nature of the young gray cat was gone as a light of ancient wisdom flickered like a flame within green pools.
"You've been doing well with your training. You have shown the true heart of a Medicine Cat, learning from others that don't belong to Stoneclan." Mintleaf's voice still held the tone of youth, but it also had mellowed out to not be as excited though that smile still remained. "You have found wisdom and training from not only Sandblaze but also Falconstorm and Skyteller."
The young healer felt a wave of pride wash through her chest, puffing it out ever so slightly despite the fact that they were the only two cats, it seemed, within the entirety of the forest. The black feline had always wanted to learn from the other healers among the valley, different cats had different knowledge and what was better than learning all she could.
"Keep training Ebonypaw, and continue to keep your heart in the right place. You are growing up into a fine young healer." Mintleaf let out a soft purr, padding forwards. Though she was smaller than the black feline, Mintleaf stretched up to touch her nose to Ebonypaw's forehead and the edges of the Stoneclanner's vision blurred as sleep fleeted away from her.
Within seconds blackness had surrounded her once more and within a couple breaths, Ebonypaw was blinking away her dream as a yawn parted her jaws.

He was so happy to see Kindleflare. She made him feel like he was on the right path, even when he felt like StarClan had forsaken him. He greeted most of the other medicine cats cordially, but when he saw the LightningClan Medicine Cat he trotted over to her and licked her between the ears, greeting her in affection before leaning over to headbutt her smaller apprentice as his announcement to full fledged medicine cat went through. "Congratulations Tigereye." He rumbled quietly, giving the smaller tom a smile. "You will do great things." And Ebonypaw was also a cat he'd come to appreciate the company of. The she-cat was curious but brash, tending to do things because she wished to without thinking them through. She'd change as she aged, but she too got a headbutt from the large tom. "I trust you are well?" The greetings would complete one after the other and when the time came Falconstorm strode into Moon Tree with a heavy sigh. Another meeting to sleep without dreaming. StarClan were still angry with him, and it was likely he wouldn't get any warning or visions from them ever again. But he laid down anyway next to Kindleflare and her newly renamed apprentice, curling his tail across the she-cat with a smile before laying his head on his paws to sleep. He had only just shut his eyes when a heavy weight settled on his chest, so that he couldn't breath. The world was drowned in blues and darker blacks, the sounds of thunder booming across the world. Small bodies shot past him, carried on an invisible current. He couldn't breathe, and kicked his legs reflexively trying to find the surface. Why was he underwater? He couldn't swim, thick fur bogged him down and sunk him towards the bottom. Black overshot his vision and without any contact with StarClan he shot awake, gasping for air and shaking uncontrollably as he realized it had been a dream and that StarClan had sent him a dream without context or explanation. What had happened? He still felt like he'd been under water, his heart beating fast and his lungs heaving as he drug in air. He imagined he looked shocked, out of sorts. Smokefur didn't feel like she or her apprentice had received too much attention upon their arrival, very standard pleasantries were exchanged, and it didn't seem like they were being ignored or ostracized. It was best that it wasn't looked into to hard, and Nightclan's medicine cat chose to view the tone of the meeting as a win. Sometimes even when trying to stand apart from their clans more combat focused affairs a medicine cat could easily bring baggage with them that has no place at a half moon meeting. Tonight the assembled cats had done well, even the warriors seemed to be behaving, and the peaceful tone gave way to a tradition that brought all the medicine cats together. As Kindleflare spoke the words Smokefur had heard many times before she prepared herself to deliver a strong vocal congratulations, the nervous tom had earned all the praise that could possibly be bestowed upon him tonight. As the newly named medicine cat's mentor finished her part Smokefur quickly chimed in with her peers calling out his new name with all the force she could muster.
As the cheers died down each medicine cat took turns approaching the moon tree and settling within its branches, and whilst Smokefur joined the rest of the medicine cats she prepared herself for the confrontation she planned to orchestrate. As she saw it Starclan had many questions to answer, particularly regarding their choice in Nightclan's new leader. Smokefur faded off to sleep just as she usually did when dreaming in the moon trees embrace, however as she woke in Starclan she quickly deduced she was alone. This was different, she seemed to always be visited by her mentor at the very least, however there wasn't an ancestor in sight. "That's how its going to be, huh!?" Smokefur yelled out indignantly, knowing exactly who she wanted to speak to. "This is your doing isn't it Ravenstar!? It's been moons since you left me to watch over Nightclan practically by myself, and all the times I have stood here since then you have refused to even face me!" A rustling behind Smokefur caused her to pause, as she whipped around to see Dapplecloud. "She's not here Smokefur..."

curiosity is not a sin... ...but we should exercise caution with our curiosity Shadowchaser It was a somber walk to the Moon Tree, Shadowchaser keeping step with Smokefur - a few glimpses at the aged medicine cat to make sure he was not walking too fast. They were in luck, weatherwise. No snow, no rain, no bitter, aching cold. Shadowchaser had long ago taken notice of how certain weather patterns affected those of an advanced age. Smokefur, sadly, was also privvy to these same weather conditions.
Shadowchaser murmured a soft thank you to their escorts - Frostjaw and Cinderfur - when the two healers arrived at the mouth of the Moon Tree. It warmed him to see Sandblaze and Ebonypaw, as well as Tigerpaw and Kindleflare - the apprentice had certainly grown since he'd last laid eyes on the younger tom - but it was Dewfrost's arrival that was most welcome to him. He gave a curt nod to Falconstorm, trying to ignore the tension in his belly whenever he was around the fluffy TreeClan healer.
Falconstorm probably hadn't said more than two words to him in Shadowchaser's entire service as a medicine cat; this left Shadowchaser with the distinct impression that Falconstorm either thought very little of him - or simply preferred the company of female healers instead.
"It's good to see you, Dewfrost." He greeted her with a smile, and was rewarded with a gentle purr in return. The broken stammer of LightningClan's senior healer prevented a more indepth conversation, however, as the she-cat had an announcement to make. Shadowchaser's expression lit up with surprise. Already? StarClan, where had the moons gone?
Kindleflare performed the ceremony for young Tigerpaw, and Shadowchaser was quick to join the other medicine cats in their loud cheering of Tigerpaw's new name - Tigereye. "Congratulations," Shadowchaser purred. "Kindleflare has taught you well."
That was the last order of business before the dreaming began. Shadowchaser plodded softly into hallowed grown, feeling the cold touch of the Moon Tree against his pelt as he curled up against its roots. His tail brushed softly against his mentor's flank, wanting the reassurance of her presence. Times for NightClan had become... strained, and Shadowchaser had come to the Moon Tree in search of answers; when he breathed in slow and deep, letting that breath free after a forced count to ten, the chestnut tom prayed he would walk away from this dream with more answers than questions.
The lush pine forests of StarClan surrounded him, that indescribable scent of something both familiar and foreign mingling with the faint scents of the other medicine cats. Shadowchaser looked around, expecting Hollowcry or Sootfeather - or, perhaps, a medicine cat from the past.
Instead, Shadowchaser saw a figure in the distance, lounging and grooming himself beside a small copse. Shadowchaser's pulse hiccuped, and he immediately went closer, recognizing the scars and the two-hued eyes of the old brawler. Not so old, now that Shadowchaser was right in front of him. StarClan saw fit to return Blackwolf to his former haughty glory, that gleam in his eye hinting at more than just a return to strength and vigor. Blackwolf, more than anything, looked happy.
Ghostlight...
That had to be the reason.
Seizing his chance, Shadowchaser addressed the StarClan warrior with some urgency. "Blackwolf. I... I need your help to convince Darkstar to focus on what's best for the Clan."
Blackwolf snorted. "You mean give up on avenging my death, is that it?"
"Yes." Shadowchaser's tail flicked behind him, betraying his pent up hopes and worries. "It's going to get NightClan thrown headfirst into a war - you know what that's like, you know what the cost is."
The older warrior didn't looked swayed. Rather, he cocked his head, gloating. "You'd have been better off sending Smokefur. She's old enough to understand what war is truly like. You? You're just afraid, aren't you? Afraid of more cats you can't heal."
Shadowchaser's jaws parted in astonishment, hurt flaring up like a wasp's sting in his chest. "I'm not afrai--"
"There's nothing I can say that's going to stop what's coming, Shadowchaser." Blackwolf cut him off, rising from his lounged position into a sit. "If Darkstar doesn't avenge me, Crowflame, Graywolf, Bonetail, Hollystorm - any number of cats will seize that opportunity. What makes you think you wouldn't be in this same position if some other cat had died? Darkstar is NightClan's leader." Two-toned eyes gleamed. "This is the NightClan way; any blood of ours spilt is repaid twofold. The time for weak leaders is over. War is how our warriors are forged. While the other Clans are content with growing fat and lazy, we strive for greatness."
Blackwolf purred, challenging Shadowchaser with his signature stare. "I raised her well. You should be proud, your sister is going to accomplish great things."
"At what cost?" Shadowchaser snapped, his heart aching with the desperation to stop what was coming. "It's easy for you to speak of war and greatness, you've already lived! Your time is over." Shadowchaser ignored the warning flash in Blackwolf's eyes, speaking firmly. "It's over. It is my responsibility to take care of my Clan, and that means making sure kits don't grow up orphaned or young warriors aren't mercilessly slaughtered for a dead cat's ideals!"
Shadowchaser was breathing hard now, golden eyes wide and intense with the passion of his conviction. "I will do everything in my power to limit casualties, Blackwolf, but if you see your children or your grandkits sooner than you expected - just remember how important it was that we strive for greatness."
He saw the bristling of the scarred tom's pelt and the widening of his stance, but Shadowchaser paid him no mind. Rather, he turned away from him, putting distance between he and Darkstar's mentor. What are we going to do? The question echoed through the Moon Tree's cavern as he awoke, breathing hard, against the roots.

The pride on Kindleflare's face was evident until the moment all the medicine cats began settling in to dream. Butting her shoulder happily against Falconstorm, before resting her head on Tigereye's, the ginger and white she-cat was still purring as she lay down before the Moon Tree and pressed her nose to the familiar entity. A deep, contented sigh escaped her as she slipped into a sleeping state, darkness sweeping in both her vision and her hearing. It took but a few heartbeats for the soft sounds of nighttime in the real world to be replaced by the quiet peace of the dreaming world.
Dark amber eyes blinked open to a familiar starry landscape. Rising to a sit, Kindleflare let her eyes roam, her heart still bubbling with the joy she'd felt in the mortal world. That is, until her previous visit here trickled into her mind. Her tail tip twitched nervously, an uncomfortable feeling settling into her throat. Quietly praying that she was not left with such an awful dream again, the ginger healer stepped around in a circle to search the seemingly empty surroundings. A rustle to her left drew her attention, and Kindleflare spun about dizzyingly fast.
The relief that swamped her when her gaze landed upon the gentle features of Firebird was indescribable. "M-Mom!" She stammered, nearly tripping over herself to close the distance between the two of them. Firebird smiled warmly at her daughter, greeting her with a purr as the medicine cat pressed her forehead to the older she-cat's star-speckled pelt. "I d-did it! I a-actually d-did it! T-Tigereye h-has l-learnt s-so much, a-and I got to g-give him his f-full n-name t-tonight. I m-mean, you kn-knew that already I-I'm s-sure, b-but I c-couldn't n-not t-tell you! I-It's a-almost m-more exciting th-than w-when I g-got my n-name!"
The words just spilled out of the medicine cat's maw, drawing an amused smile from Firebird. "You certainly did, my dear. Your father and I couldn't be more proud. You and Tigereye both handled the fallout from the badger chase well too." Although the mention of the badger fiasco made the ginger she-cat uneasy, something else caught her attention. There was something... Distracted in Firebird's gaze, despite the obvious loving praise. Kindleflare's ears flicked back momentarily, and she took an uncomfortable step back. "M-Mom...? Wh-What's wrong..?"
The older she-cat sighed gently, closing her eyes a moment before focusing back on Kindleflare. The healer could see that her mother was picking her words carefully. "Your trials are not over yet, my love. For you or Tigereye. Redstar is a strong tom, but with him.. He will bring a new age for LightningClan. You may find yourself even busier than you were beneath Firestar's reign." Kindleflare's heart dropped a little in her chest, dark amber eyes falling to the starry grass at her paws. Redstar had always made her uneasy. He was an intense figure, with a near unchangeable determination. If he set his mind upon something, it would be so.
"Y-You mean.. M-More fighting..? More w-war?" The silence, and the pressure of Firebird's chin atop Kindleflare's head was all the confirmation she needed. "Hush, Kindleflare. Do not dwell upon it too long. Rejoice in Tigereye's success for tonight. Just be ready. And be there for those that need you." As Kindleflare stepped back, it looked as though Firebird had something else to say, but the older she-cat remained silently conflicted. As the stars around her began to fade, the image of her mother disappearing back into darkness, Kindleflare thought she heard her mother's voice whisper a single word. A name.
Nightstep.
Dark amber eyes snapped open to the dim light of the Moon Tree's cavern. Her maw twisted in confusion, wondering why in StarClan's name Firebird had spoken her brother's name. M-May she... M-Misses him? S-Surely that's w-what it is. The ginger healer thought to herself, gaze drifting to Tigereye at her side as the young tom stirred. She offered him a warm smile, but it was obvious there was something in her that was distracted by other thoughts. Pressing her nose to his ear, she rose slowly. "S-Say y-your... F-Farew-wells, T-Tigereye. Th-Then l-let's g-go share y-your n-new name with the C-Clan." |

Feeling no small amount of pride in his new name, he offered a bright smile to each cat that congratulated him more personally as the group of peers moved to settle among the roots of the Moon Tree. He curled up beside Kindleflare, Falconstorm taking up a place on her other side, and purred happily, tiny stub of a tail twitching eagerly for Mapleheart to greet him by his new name.
He closed his eyes, his breathing evening out, and when he opened them again Mapleheart was there, but also Russetfall. He leaped to his paws and rushed forward to push his nose into his father’s neck fur, purring louder than he ever had at finally seeing him again. His father purred back, rasping his tongue over his son’s ear, “I’m so proud of you, Tigereye.”
Mapleheart’s purring filled his ears as well as his sister stepped forward lick his cheek, “You’ve earned your name, Tigereye. You are more capable than you give yourself credit for.”
Russetfall spoke again, “I’m so happy you found your place in life, a place you can be happy in.”
Tigereye laughed nervously, “Me too… I would have been a horrible warrior.”
Mapleheart headbutted him lightly on his shoulder, “Don’t talk down about yourself, Tigereye. You might not have been much of a fighter, but I’m sure you would have found something of your own to excel at as a warrior. Anyway it doesn’t matter.”
Both StarClan cats took a step back, the pride in their eyes warming Tigereye’s heart. He had never imagined any cat would be proud of him for anything, not until Kindleflare. He owed her so much. Glancing down at his paws, he drew in a short, sharp breath, before looking up to his father, “Do you… do you think Firesky will be proud of me?”
The older tom’s gaze softened and he stepped forward again to press his nose to his son’s forehead, “Of course she will be.” There was a strain in his tone and he sighed, “I know your relationship with your mother has not been… easy for you. You or Lynxfire. She does love you, loves us. Now that she no longer has her ambition to distract her, spend more time with her and you’ll see. Every cat has their flaws… that doesn’t mean they don’t love, or deserve to be loved.”
Tigereye nodded as Russetfall stepped back beside Mapleheart again. He didn’t doubt that his mother loved him, but he had always fallen short of living up to what he thought he should be as the son of a leader, sure he would never draw an ounce of pride from the she-cat who gave him life. But he supposed he wouldn’t really know until he spoke to her himself, so it was best to leave the wondering behind for now. There might be something more important to discuss. He looked between them hesitantly, “Do… either of you have any messages for me?”
Mapleheart smiled, “Not this time, little brother. Enjoy your new name and be proud of your accomplishments.”
Russetfall purred again, “It seems waiting to come visit you was a good choice. What better time than now?”
Tigereye purred as well. It was truly perfect timing, to have his father return to his life to congratulate him on earning his name, “I love you… I love you both.” He stepped between them to rub his cheek along each their shoulders in turn, and then they faded away and he was left with their lingering scents as his eyes blinked back open to the Moon Tree cavern.
Kindleflare pressed her nose to his ear and he looked over at her as she spoke, "S-Say y-your... F-Farew-wells, T-Tigereye. Th-Then l-let's g-go share y-your n-new name with the C-Clan."
His heart leapt anxiously at the thought of being the center of attention again, and with more cats than just his medicine cat peers, but he nodded as he rose and arched his back in a stretch. Then he remembered Lynxfire, outside waiting for them, and his paws itched to just run out and tell her his news. He forced himself not to, however, and instead quickly wished Ebonypaw and Shadowchaser safe travels home before he allowed his paws to carry him out of the cavern, picking up speed the closer he got to the entrance until he realized just how it might look to the warriors waiting outside if he suddenly burst out into the open. Probably like he was being chased by something dangerous. Again he forced himself to calm down, stepping out into the open night air and making a brisk beeline right for his sister. Smokefur slowly drug herself back from the land of the dead, and rejoined the world of the living as her surroundings faded in. As this occurred her calmed mind slowly ramped up to its maximum processing speed, and the revelations that had taken place during her dream came back to her. Dapplecloud's words resonated with Smokefur, and it would be fair to say that her entire world had been shaken on that evening. After Smokefur slowly rose from the moon tree's embrace she found herself performing a lazy stretch, the motion did not indicate just how much was running through her thoughts. It mattered little as she still had more business to attend to, the nights work was not yet over for the aging she cat. Thus Smokefur was forced to push the dream out of her mind, and after letting Shadowchaser gather himself she called on the NightClan escort before setting off and leading the way back home.
