If you love me, don't let go The two cats entered the camp slowly; Sleetpaw was in front with Blazefang following; the ginger tom guided her toward the medicine cat's den. Sleetpaw's eyes were half-closed, her pace weaving side to side and she was panting heavily. She was relying more on her uncle's voice as she made her way across the camp, barely aware of anything else. The shade of the den, however, was a welcome relief from the sun's heat and she didn't bother heading for a nest; simply slumping to the ground once inside.
She wasn't sure what was wrong, but she felt far too hot. It had come on little by little as she and Blazefang had been battle training, but she hadn't said anything for fear that he might think she was just trying to get out of it. He'd suspected something, she was sure, because he called an end to the practice, but even on the walk back she'd got worse- until now. She was hot, really hot. But she was tired too, and she rolled to her side, eyes closing. Her ribs rose and fell in a fast pace as she continued to pant, but at the sound of Tigerpaw's voice she forced her eyes open again. Blazefang followed along right behind his niece, panting from the heat himself but far more worried about her condition. He had taken her out for some battle training practice, just the two of them, because she was so much more timid than her siblings, but with her thick coat maybe it had been a bad idea to be so active today. He guided her with a gentle nudge toward the medicine cat’s den, tense and wary, just waiting for her to collapse. It wasn’t difficult to tell something was wrong.
The shaded den was some relief from the glaring sun, “Kindleflare? Tigerpaw? Something is wrong with Sleetpaw. We were training, but now….” He stepped forward in alarm as Sleetpaw did finally collapse and Tigerpaw hurried over to them.
“Sleetpaw?” Tigerpaw’s voice rose slightly in his own alarm over his friend’s condition and he forced himself to take a deep breath. It didn’t help a patient when their medicine cat was panicking. He and Kindleflare had been dealing with some dehydration cases since greenleaf began and the heat took its toll on their Clanmates, but he hadn’t seen anyone come in looking this bad yet. Kindleflare had warned him how simple dehydration could escalate to worse conditions, and apparently even lead to death in the worst cases.
He bent to press his nose briefly to Sleetpaw’s paw pad just to ensure the temperature was indeed the problem and not something else. She was so hot. He tried to keep his voice steady when he spoke, but she was his friend, his best friend, other than Kindleflare, who was more like family, and it was hard to keep his worry out of his tone completely, “Sleetpaw… can… can you tell me just how you’re feeling?” He moved a few paces away to where he and Kindleflare were carefully keeping a stock of water soaked moss for quick access, gingerly picking one up and setting it in front of Sleetpaw’s muzzle, “And lap at this. It will help.” He brought one over for Blazefang too, “You… you should drink too, or you might get worse.” Blazefang grunted agreement, still more worried about Sleetpaw, and bent to lap at the moss, keeping his eyes on his niece.
Tigerpaw fetched a couple feverfew leaves and brought them over to Sleetpaw as well, speaking softly as he placed them near the moss ball, “After you’ve had some water, try to eat these. It will help cool you down.” There were other things he wanted to do as well, but they had to get some fluids into her before anything else. He sat at her side and bent once more to press his ear to her side, listening to her heart, his own seemed to skip at how fast it was beating. This was definitely more than just simple dehydration. If you love me, don't let go Tigerpaw looked worried, and Sleetpaw couldn't find it in herself to try to comfort him. She was having trouble thinking past just how hot she felt, even lying here in the cool shade of the den. He asked how she felt, but she hadn't managed to reply before he was nosing a ball of water-soaked moss in front of her.
The cool liquid washed over her tongue, soaking into the fur of her muzzle and cooling the pad of the foot she used to slide it closer. It didn't stop her panting, but it made her feel just a little better, for a little while. "I'm hot," she told him, shifting to roll to her other side and wishing her fur was shorter. "Really hot. Like I'm still in the sun. Am I gonna be okay?" She looked up at Tigerpaw and Blazefang; her uncle didn't seem to be in as bad a condition as she was. She was glad for that.
Obediently she ate the leaves Tigerpaw gave her, swallowed them down, and then stretched out. Part of her wished she'd been born a RainClan cat, right about now; she wondered if any of them ever had a problem with the heat. Having the courage and ability to just plunge into a deep river sounded like the best way to avoid the sun's heat. But even the thought of setting paw in water that had no bottom to support her made her nervous, and she blinked back at Tigerpaw. She trusted him- he was smart and he'd know what to do.

Tigerpaw was happy to see Sleetpaw able to drink well enough at least. When she also able to roll over on her own, that was another good sign. He breathed a soft sigh of relief, daring to believe her condition had not progressed toward anything fatal just yet. “I’m… I’m sure you’ll be fine,” after the initial hesitation, his voice gained a bit more conviction, “I think you stopped your activity just in time.”
“She’ll be okay?” Blazefang’s question was more an expression of relief than something he really needed answered again, but he certainly wouldn’t mind hearing it.
Tigerpaw glanced over at the tom, “After some rest and cooling off.” And then some more rest. He had gone over the dangers the heat brought with Kindleflare several times in the past few days, the different stages that a cat’s condition could reach due to the heat and the treatment of each. Sleetpaw’s was the worst condition yet, and hopefully the worst they would see, but he couldn’t help thinking she wouldn’t be the last. Warriors’ duties meant lots of activity, even if they avoided doing much during the hottest parts of the day.
“You should drink more water,” he returned his attention to Sleetpaw, fetching another ball of moss and setting it down briefly to explain what he was going to do, “I’m gonna squeeze some of the water into your fur, okay? Since you’re so hot, it shouldn’t be too uncomfortable. If you’re still feeling really hot after that, I’d like to take you to the creek, if you’re up to it.” He didn’t want to make her move too soon, and heading back out into the sun without cooling her off a little first certainly wouldn’t help. The creek water was getting fairly low, but it would be enough for her to lie in and cool off further, and fortunately it wasn’t too far from camp. Taxx

If you love me, don't let go Sleetpaw trusted him. He was worried, but that made sense- she was too, after all. He did say she'd be fine, and she gave a sigh as she lay her head down, more than content to do as Tigerpaw suggested and lie here in the shade. And have some more water, which Tigerpaw was kind enough to bring over; she lapped at it, easing the dryness of her mouth from the heat and panting, taking in every drop she could get and then turning her paws over to rasp her tongue over the pads, hoping to cool them off too.
She gave a mew of agreement to Tigerpaw's offer, and the sensation of water dripping through her pelt felt better than she'd thought it would, but she hesitated at the suggestion. Go back out in this heat? She was still hot, but the combination of water and shelter was making her feel a little better already. And what if Tigerpaw got what she got? His pelt was much shorter than her own, but even Blazefang was still panting a little- LightningClan needed their apprentice medicine cat, she shouldn't risk his health. "No, that's okay," she replied. "I'll be fine, right? If we stay here? What you're doing is nice, it's helping. It feels good."
If just a little uncomfortable, in the fact that she wasn't used to feeling her fur stick to her skin. But she was definitely willing to deal with that, if it meant getting rid of the overwhelming feeling of heat that was still scorching through her. Not as bad as it had been when she'd first made it to the medicine cat's den, but still present. Quietly, unable to help panting still, Sleetpaw curled her paws to her chest and blinked up at both ginger toms. Because I'm a little unsteady Sleetpaw LightningClan Apprentice

The ginger and white she-cat had done her best to stick to the shadows on her return journey from collecting herbs. She hadn’t intended to be out as long as she had, for the heat of the day climbed quickly as the sun rose in the sky. She’d been careful, and had even dipped her paws into the creek whenever possible to keep her body temperature down. Despite her efforts, she was glad to return to the safety of LightningClan’s camp, and was looking forward to the cool, shaded interior of the medicine cat’s den.
As she ducked through the entrance, however, her dark amber eyes landed upon the seated form of Blazefang, who was watching Sleetpaw and Tigerlaw with evident worry in his gaze. Ginger ears pricked, and the LightningClan healer blinked in mild alarm. Stepping forward and placing the herbs she was carrying off to the side so they would remain out of the way, she glanced over at Tigerpaw. “Wh-What is y-your analysis, T-Tigerpaw?” She asked, stepping up to Sleetpaw’s side with a gentle smile to the apprentice.
As she listened to Tigerpaw, she pressed her nose to Sleetpaw’s forehead, and then her paw pads, before testing various other spots along her flank and shoulder. The thicker coated apprentice was definitely far warmer than she should be, which concerned the LightningClan medicine cat. Tigerpaw’s assessment, however, was strong, as were the treatments he’d already begun to administer. With an approving purr, she flicked his shoulder softly with her tail.
“E-Excellent work, T-Tigerpaw. Th-There isn’t m-much else I c-can do. The o-only r-recommendation I h-have, especially f-for cats with th-thick fur, is t-to groom th-them. It w-will help re-release some of the h-heat trapped in th-their fur.” She instructed, bending to rasp her tongue over the she-cat’s shoulder. After a moment, she looked up and nodded her head toward the patient. “Y-You c-continue, I’ll go t-to the creek and b-bring back s-some soaked moss.” She purred, before glancing toward Sleetpaw.
“Y-You just relax n-now, a-alright? T-Tigerpaw will take w-wonderful c-care of you. I’ll b-be back s-soon w-with some water f-for you.” |
