Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams It was her second gathering since earning her apprentice title under the watchful tutelage of her mentor, Sandblaze. Within the moons that she had become the ward to the Medicine Cat her curiosity for knowledge had grown even more from the time she had been within the walls of the nursery.
The young Stoneclanner had dealt with the aftermath of both her clan and Lightningclan chasing out a den of badgers, luckily most were not seriously injured... though both Hawkstar and Firestar had suffered losses that day. She had been quick and efficient, working hard with her wide paws to ease pains and stop bleeding.
With her studies going smoothly, the growing black feline made her way to the gathering with her head held high with pride in her hard work. Pale green pools were vacant of most expression when Stoneclan made their presence known within Starclan's Claws with the other cats who had already arrived.
There was a flicker of her ear as Ebonypaw wondered if another fight might break out. It shouldn't, but that didn't mean that it wouldn't happen. With so many different cats, clans and potential volitile natures anything could happen.
A least Minkfire isn't here.
The thought was offhanded and quickly passed through Ebonypaw's mind. There was no point for her to debate her clanmate's motives or the new warrior's intentions when it came to ruffling the fur of others.
The attention of the fluffy black she-cat shifted with the arrival of a small group of cats. She didn't know there scent, nor of the large tom who stood at the front of them, though through her studies of the clans she could surmise that they were probably the Tribe of Forgotten Waters.
Her curiosities had been peaked once more.
Flickering her tail nub, the growing feline gave a quick dip of her head to Sandblaze before padding softly over to where the small patrol of Tribe Cats stood among the outskirts of the Gathering. From what Ebonypaw knew, Skyteller was not only their leader, but also their healer. She couldn't help the questions that bubbled within her mind though she properly kept her mouth shut as she approached.
Giving a proper and respectful dip of her head, Ebonypaw's voice soon followed, "Skyteller." Pale green pools lifted to slowly run over the larger tom before flickering to each cat he brought with him. "Welcome to the Gathering, it is definitely an honor to meet you. I am Ebonypaw, the Medicine Cat Apprentice of Stoneclan."
She couldn't hold a conversation without giving the older tom her information, it would just be poor manners. Besides, within the curious mind of the young she-cat, she wondered what healing techniques and specialties she could possibly learn from not only an experienced healer, but also one of different tactics than cats who followed Starclan.

Teller of the Mountain Sky The greeting had drawn Skyteller from his wandering thoughts. He glanced down at the small she-cat and nodded, shaking away those worries of times to come and all too willingly focusing on the apprentice. "Thank you," he purred, "It is nice to meet you as well, Ebonypaw. You're learning the healing ways, is that right? I haven't had the pleasure of meeting an apprentice thus far. How long have you been learning?"
A talk like this was nice. Much less stressful than dealing with the trials of being Healer, of winding his way through customs unfamiliar to him and the Tribe, trying to balance each individual leader enough to make them happy, but not giving more than he felt he ought to. The worst of the talks were over now, and he was more than willing to talk about something like this before he led his cats back to the mountains. River looked tired; he guessed she would sleep well tomorrow. She would still be grieving her sister, he knew, but she had agreed to come regardless, to represent the Tribe. Tribe of Forgotten Waters

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams The young feline was pleased as how pleasant the older tom seemed, though of course she hadn't been too worried about trouble. At first glance all the tribe cats seemed nervous within their own pelts, out of place among the clans who were comfortable in such a setting.
Genuine curiosity was easily readable within those pale orbs as the growing black she-cat easily held the Tribe Healer's gaze. Rabbitfur had always told her it proper as well as highly respectful to hold eye contact during a conversation. She may not know him, nor live among his tribe, but he was still a leader and healer that deserved respect for his position.
It was just the proper way to go about things.
"I'm glad I could be of use upon your encounter of an apprentice." It was an amusing statement as her whiskers wriggled with the emotion, but Ebonypaw was pleased that she could teach him something along with hoping to gain wisdom or knowledge from him in return.
"I'm only nine moons, and Sandblaze chose me as his apprentice when I turned six moons. That's the age all kits either choose the path of a warrior or get picked to learn under the Medicine Cat." The young feline continued, feeling proud at the information she could pass on.
She also couldn't help the shimmer of pride that danced through her pale gaze, she already had three moons under her paws with Sandblaze. Each day she learned more, she trained more. She had crossed paws with Smokestorm in an attempt to learn to protect herself and she made sure to listen to the older healers at each half moon healing so she could catch specialties or mixtures she might make use of, if ever needed.
Her curiosities always lead her towards higher learning when it came to the art of healing.
"I must admit Skyteller, " A small flicker of her nub as her question wriggled around her mind. She hoped she wasn't over stepping her bounds by asking such a question, but she couldn't help when her natural curiosity won out rational reasoning. Not to mention she'd brought it up in a respectful manner that could easily be brushed aside if it wasn't desired conversation.
"I'm very curious as to how you are both leader and healer to your clan." It seemed like so much to shoulder for a single cat. Each clan was lead by not only a leader, but also their most loyal of warriors, the deputy. Within the hierarchy there was also room for the Medicine Cat and their apprentice should they take one.
"It must be a lot to take on, your strength is respectable." The black feline couldn't help the amusement that filtered through that green gaze, though not towards Skyteller. A small giggle broke through her near emotionless facade before she corrected herself and offered a quick dip of her head in appology for her behavior.
"I don't think Hawkstar would enjoy shuffling through herbs on a daily basis." Ebonypaw spoke softly and lightly of her aging leader, the old tom growing closer to the bid of Starclan but still fought as if he were a fresh warrior. Her statement wasn't meant as an insult in any form, but within her head the image of Hawkstar's ailing bones moving and organizing groups of herbs was quite amusing.

Teller of the Mountain Sky Six moons? A hint of concern swept through the Healer at that. It was awfully young to turn a cat out of the roost and teach them such harsh lessons about hunting, fighting, and whatever else the Clans deemed necessary. It was strange, too, to consider that she would spend her entire life being a medicine cat- being picked at such a young age was a rarity among the Tribe. Most had already become prey-hunters or cave-guards before being called. Perhaps younger minds learned faster, but for such an important rank maturity was necessary. Perhaps, he realized, it was very much like the rank of the Clans' deputies, where they watched and learned before taking on the full rank when the former joined their StarClan.
Ebonypaw's voice pulled his attention back and he refocused on her, his tail flicking at the guilt of his wandering thoughts. It was a valid question, he supposed, since she had only known the rank to be split between two- or even three- cats. True, it was challenging at times, but as a whole? "My main role is as Healer- or medicine cat, as you call it. I ensure my Tribe stays healthy and treat any injuries or illnesses that may come. Aside from that, I preform ceremonies when a kit is ready to become a to-be, or when a to-be is ready to become a cave-guard or prey-hunter. If there are decisions to be made, I may have the last say but generally they are made as a group. As for hunting, my prey-hunters decide where they think is best to hunt, and the cave-guards follow them to protect them. What other duties does your leader make?"
He was curious. He knew there must be other ways the Clans differed from him, and perhaps he could learn some of those ways from this to-be- no, apprentice was their term. If she was willing to share, he was willing to listen.

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams New words were being put into the young and growing feline as she stood there with the lead cat of the Tribe. Everything around her, the drone of cats from every clans, it all faded into the background as she solely focused on Skyteller. Her curiosties were peaked and being fed as she conversed with the older tom.
Prey-Hunters and Cave-Guards. Obviously the names were self explanatory, as as those pale green pools of her glanced over at the cats accompanying Skyteller. With his explination, she figured the larger and more bulkier cats had to be the Cave-Guards, while the lithe and small ones held the title of Prey-Hunter.
Interesting.
While all clan cats learned both skills of fighting and hunting, Ebonypaw could see how dividing the talents would be profitable when it came to the small Tribe up within the mountains... but in the clans? Sometimes the best hunters were also equally talented in fighting and vise versa.
Returning her gaze to the elder healer, Ebonypaw took in his question, allowing it to mull over in her head for a moment. With a quick glance to Hawkstar, the aging Stoneclan leader, the young apprentice decided it wouldn't do the clan any harm to explain the dynamics of how they work to the Tribe's leader.
"Hawkstar generally makes decisions based on what he feels is correct or believes is in the clan's best interest. What he says is final. He does ceremonies for when kits become apprentices, when apprentices become warriors, and when warriors become elders. Starclan grants every leader nine lives, and then the leader will pick a deputy."
Ebonypaw had learned much of this from her mother. Rabbitfur had been keen on explaining clan life and politics as soon as the young black she-cat had been three moons old. Best to go into training with a foot already on the stones. The thought of her mother caused Ebonypaw to pause for just a sceond.
It was a shame the black and white senior warrior couldn't have attended this gathering, should would have been very intrigued with Skyteller and his tribe.
Flickering her nub tail and sending the moment away, Ebonypaw continued to attempt to explain the clans as best she could. "Even though Hawkstar makes most of the decisions, he often asks Smokestorm, our deputy, or Sandblaze for council." She had yet to be asked her opinion on things when it came to the well being of the clan, as she was still young.
"Smokestorm does a lot too!" She suddenly added, pleased to speak of her deputy as well. "Why, she gets to pick cats out for border patrols and hunting patrols every morning. She also watches over the training of apprentices to decide when they are ready for their final assessment to earn their warrior names."
"Oh," Ebonypaw thought for a moment, "You said you had specific cats who hunt and those who protect them. Warrior apprentices learn both skills, some are better than others at hunting or fighting. Both are required to earn a warrior name though. Even I have to learn some defensive battle techniques to earn my full name."

Teller of the Mountain Sky Cats who hunted and fought. Skyteller glanced across at the crowd of cats that remained, wondering what it would be like to live with those who would hunt at some times and then turn and ask- or be offered- to fight. It was their way, of course, but so far removed from his own. "My Tribemates rely on each other. When they hunt, the prey-hunters trust the cave-guards to keep an eye on their surroundings for any threats that might come. How do you hunt if you must also watch for danger? And the efforts of both ensure the Tribe remains safe and fed."
He shifted a bit. "Skyteller, typically, does not venture out of the cave. They stay where it is safe, because we have just one life to offer our Tribe. When I grow old, I will pick a likely cat and train them to take my place, and when I join our ancestors they will take the rank of Skyteller in my stead. So it has gone since we formed into the Tribe, countless seasons ago." How different were their lives? Could this young she-cat, who knew only the ways of the Clans, understand his Tribe's ways? Possibly no more than he understood the Clans'.
"It sounds like the way your Clan runs is efficient. Each cat seems to know what is expected of them. Having met Smokestorm, I know she is a cat who knows what she is doing." He might not like her brash demeanor, but her confidence and self-assurance were qualities a cat who would be leader needed. "Perhaps, young one, I will bring one of our to-bes next time, and you can talk with them. I have a couple who would love to meet cats who live their lives in a completely different style to our own."

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams The young feline tilted her head to the side ever so slightly as she listened to the older tom speak of his tribe. While listening she also observed, those pale green pools watching as he so happily spoke of his home and the cats he lived with with within the mountains.
As he spoke once more of the Prey-Hunters and Cave-Guards, she couldn't help but let that mossy gaze slide back over to the cats huddled behind him with nervous expressions and wide, unsure eyes.
Hopefully, within time and re-occurrence, they would be more comfortable at the Gathering.
With an ear flicker, the black apprentice mulled over his first question why Skyteller finished speaking. it was true that danger lurked among Stoneclan's territory, Lightningclan was another wide open clan that had predators that hunted among the skies. And of course, all clans worried about badgers, foxes or the occasional sightings of Demon.
And yet, sometimes cats did get stolen by a bird as it swooped down and flew away. Though it was a more rare occasion. Ebonypaw didn't get to join in on the hunting excursions, she wasn't training to be a warrior, to provide for the clan the way the others did. So the young she-cat didn't have an answer for Skyteller, though she assumed that each cat kept an eye on each other while they hunted.
The talk of his successor intrigued the youngster as her ears flickered and those pale green pools refocused upon Skyteller's face. He seemed to be growing a tad more comfortable as he spoke of his life, the nub of her tail flickering slightly as she listened.
"Skyteller, why wait until you are older?" Ebonypaw asked in that sharp voice of hers, curiosity intrigued a little more. While she knew Sandblaze was young, he was still old enough to name an apprentice, and even Hawkstar and Smokestorm took on several apprentices throughout their services as Stoneclan's leaders.
Why, even Ebonypaw would assume that once Sandblaze retired and she was old enough to take a cat on, she too would claim an apprentice.
"Wouldn't you want to train a cat while you are younger? Sometimes Medicine Cat Apprentices spend most of their life with their mentor." While she didn't disapprove of their methods, as it wasn't her place and highly disrespectful for her to do so, she was curious about it. It was different and odd to her, but she wanted to learn as much as she could about the Tribe.
"Sandblaze is young, I wouldn't be surprised if I were a senior cat before he retired and I earned my own apprentice." Her whiskers twitched amusingly, picturing gray fur upon both her and Sandblaze's muzzle.
Upon the praise Skyteller gave her deputy, Ebonypaw couldn't help put twist her neck to find her gaze resting upon the diluted calico form of Smokestorm. It was just a quick glance as she returned it back to the tom she was deep in conversation with. "Smokestorm is well respected warrior, she will make a good leader one day." Her voice was respectful as she spoke highly of her deputy.
"She has even helped me with some defensive training. Though it is rare that Medicine Cats ever get involved with fights or scuffles, but we need to know to protect ourselves. We stay out of clan politics and it's very improper, and quit rude, for another cat to attack or stop us if we are journeying through the territories."
Interest once more intrigued, Ebonypaw's pale green pools lit up with excitement over the fact of possibly meeting a young apprentice... rather To-Be as Skyteller called them. She could only imagine the stories they could swap, about their homes, about their families, about they way they lived and went about their daily lives.
The young apprentice didn't know if all the fluff of her pelt could possibly hold her excitement. "Oh, Skyteller, that would be loads of fun! I would love to exchange some stories with a cat my age. With all the differences within out lives, it would certainly be an adventure."

Teller of the Mountain Sky Though Ebonypaw was young, Skyteller found her quite enjoyable to talk with. She was quiet, attentive, and knowledgeable about the workings of her Clan- as she ought to be- while being open-minded about his Tribe's ways, different as they were.
"My duty, at that time, is merely to train the to-be to take over for me. I receive a sign from our ancestors when I should choose them, and my remaining time will be spent ensuring they are ready to take over when I am gone. Their training is often short and difficult. They will be pushed hard, and they will have to be committed. The cat may be young- younger is often better, so they have more life to give- and they must learn all I can pass on quickly." It wasn't a long process, by any means; perhaps a mere season or two before they had to be ready to take up the rank of Skyteller. Quite possibly the cat who would take over from him had not yet been born.
"I am glad to hear she has her Clan's support. I wish her luck in the future." Perhaps it was just to the Clans that were not her own that she felt dislike. It seemed foolish to him, but who was he to say their ways were wrong? For a cat who knew no other way, it would make perfect sense to be wary of those who were not from her own Clan.
Ebonypaw's excitement over his offer made his whiskers twitch in amusement, and he purred as he dipped his head. "I will do that then. I know a to-be or two who would love to come to one of these meetings. If you'll be here, you can meet them the next time we come." His gaze flicked toward the white-and-gray she-cat who padded to Ebonypaw's side, giving the apprentice a nudge and then a nod to Skyteller before informing the apprentice that they were ready to leave.
He was honestly regretful of the parting, but he supposed they couldn't stay all night- and he and his cats had a long walk back to the cave. At least there would be good news to pass on this time. With a dip of his head Skyteller spoke again. "It was nice to have met you, Ebonypaw. May your ancestors watch over you, and I look forward to seeing you at the next Gathering."
