Newleaf 21 -------------- He'd snuck away from camp for the first time in a long time. He needed to be away, just to think and go over everything he knew was going to be happening soon. He was looking for an apprentice, he was at odds with StarClan as they could no longer control him through the use of their 'visions'. He usually only ventured away when he was gathering herbs, but today he'd just been walking while he thought and his paws brought him back to painfully familiar territory. StoneClan. Herondive. He stopped at the Sun Stones, wondering if he should just go back before one of the patrols found him and escorted him out of the territory. But...he wasn't here to see her, he was just wandering. And, while he was here, he supposed he could look for a few herbs to bring back. Not too much, he didn't want to deny StoneClan their herbs, just one or two to top off his stores back home. Newleaf was in full bloom, and a majority of herbs and medicinal plants grew in abundance even if they were hard to find. Even if they came after him, he was a big tom and would stand his ground. He wasn't seeking out one of their own anymore, if they even knew about the romance. He'd keep his broken heart to himself, he just wandered here. They could do nothing to him, not as he was a medicine cat. It was against the Code. It was one of the few times he was glad to be a medicine cat. Ghost the Undead Goddess

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams It was easier for a Medicine Cat to sneak away than a warrior or a kit, they weren't as closely monitored or watched. It had been advised several times by both leader and deputy that no apprentice go out on their own, and yet the growing she-cat didn't always want to be watched like a disobedient kit.
Not to mention, she was bored.
Sandblaze had gone out earlier with a patrol near the Rainclan border to look for herbs while the warriors hunted for the fresh-kill pile. Ebonypaw had once again been tasked with menial duties such as clearing out the bedding both for them and the elders before she checked on the retired cats to make sure they weren't in need of anything for aches or pains.
Once she was finished, the black she-cat decided upon herself to try and find herbs on her own. What was the point of learning to be the Medicine Cat if she couldn't accomplish things without the watchful gaze of her mentor or the annoying presence of a warrior.
Slipping from camp, Ebonypaw made her way towards the border Stoneclan shared with Lightningclan. Sure, the tension between the two was tight and stiff but no cat would be dumb enough to lay their hands on a cat who operated outside of the Warrior's Code.
Wide, flat paws easily scaled the barren land as she grew closer and closer to the Sun Stones, although she scent that greeted her was not one she expected. It neither belonged to one of her clanmates or the breezy scent of those who lived along the mores.
"Falconstorm." Ebonypaw's mew was proper as she dipped her head to the older tom once his stature came into view. The black she-cat let her pale green gaze run over him in inspection though her expression was guarded for the moment.
"You are very far from home, is everything well within Treeclan?" Curiosity had always been a large part of Ebonypaw's mental structure, even from the time she was a very small kit curled at in the curve of her mother's belly. And why shouldn't it be, the search for knowledge was endless.
The young she-cat was not yet fully grown, but her size was still impressive for a young cat of nine moons, and the fluffy nub of her tail twitched as she easily held the gaze of the senior Medicine Cat. Falconstorm was far more intimidating than Sandblaze was, though Ebonypaw didn't fear the Treeclanner. She had met him at both Gathering and Meetings, though she had never completely conversed with him.
Her curiosities dealing with healing and herbs went far beyond just her learning underneath Sandblaze's watchful gaze. She was curious about the practices that were unique to each clan, or even that of the Tribe she had heard Hawkstar and Smokestorm mention on occasions. Ebonypaw had the desire to learn it all, what was the point of being Medicine Cat if she didn't learn all the tricks and advantages others knew?

He was so lost in his own thoughts, his own memories, that when Ebonypaw spoke his name he startled, fur fluffing out comically before he realized who he was seeing and calmed down. Of course there was the chance of the medicine cat's apprentice, of Sandblaze's apprentice, to be out here. Did that mean the young tom was out as well? "Ebonypaw. Is Sandblaze with you also?" He looked around and scented the air, but only found the scents of Ebonypaw and a recent patrol. She was alone. While he didn't approve it wasn't his place to scold her for her recklessness. A medicine cat was precious to the clan, and she needed to learn that the hard way. But she was speaking to him and he knew he had to reply. "My clan is well." he sighed. "I am, but I roam across the valley fairly frequently. Hasn't your mentor told you that its a medicine cat's prerogative to roam wherever they please in search of herbs? So long as you don't take too many of the rare ones then its generally alright." He sat down slowly, curling his fluffy tail around his paws. "Honestly I was only out for a walk and this is where my paws brought me." Ghost the Undead Goddess

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams The young feline hadn't missed the way she startled the older tom. While it hadn't been her intention, the fluffy black she-cat couldn't help the slightest wriggle of her whiskers as a faint sliver of amusement crossed through those pale green pools.
"Ebonypaw. Is Sandblaze with you also?"
The young she-cat wasn't surprised that Falconstorm inquired about her mentor, after all they were both Medicine Cats. Not to mention Ebonypaw was still young, it wasn't often that a nine moon old apprentice was out and about on their own.
"Sandblaze is off gathering herbs near Rainclan with some warriors." The young feline gave a slight flicker of her ear as she continued her statement, better to give the whole story than half of it, "I finished my tasks and figured it would be more productive if I looked for herbs too."
Listening to the older tom, Ebonypaw was pleased to hear that his clan was doing fine despite his sudden and random appearance within Stoneclan's territory. Or rather, it was currently shared territory between Lightningclan and Stoneclan, but that information was neither here nor there at the moment.
Her attention was grabbed and interests peaked as Falconstorm continued on about Medicine Cats having the innate ability to roam the valley free of punishment to where-ever their paws take them.
"I was aware that a Medicine Cat could go where they pleased, but I am not to sure Sandblaze is keen on that idea. I've yet to travel outside Stoneclan except to Gatherings and Meetings." The short but poofy nub that was her tail flickered with the smallest spark of excitement as her curiosities rolled within her mind.
"I have always entertained the idea of studying along side other healers. I do believe it would improve my training if I learned techniques and herb mixtures unique to each clan." It was something she had yet to discuss with Sandblaze, and she was sure it would have to be passed to Hawkstar as well if it were to happen. But it was something that Ebonypaw believed would help her excel within the chosen place in her clan.
The proper feline finished her bit of speech for a moment, not attempting to hog up the conversation all for her ideals or thoughts. So she followed his reasoning for ending up on Sun Stones, pale gaze watching Falconstorm easily as she asked her question.
"Would you perhaps like company on your walk?" Of course, the young feline wouldn't intrude if Falconstorm wanted to be alone, but she felt like there was something she could learn while being in the presence of an older, more experienced cat. "Maybe we can stumble upon something we can add to our stocks."

Falconstorm had to say something now. She was out here, at her age, by herself. Without protection. He sighed. "And have you learned to defend yourself yet?" He leveled the paleness of his gaze on the younger cat. "While medicine cats are generally immune to the borders that only applies to other clan cats. Those outside the clans, and wild animals like Demon, don't care if you're a medicine cat. They'll kill you if given the chance." He brushed his tail against her, looking her over and pleased to see that she was unharmed. "You put your life at risk coming out here without an escort. As chaffing as having cats around all the time can be, until you can protect yourself its for the best. But, I'm not here to scold you." He stepped away and motioned with his head for the she-cat to follow him. Until a patrol found them, she was now his to protect. Not that he'd be saying that. Youngsters tended to resent being protected. At least the ones that thought themselves big enough to protect themselves. "You may walk with me. I think there's some things you can learn." He stepped up to two plants that looked exactly the same, but he knew one of them was poison ivy and the other a harmless leafy plant. This was basic, but he had no idea how far she'd come in training. Not that she was his to train, but he was proving a point. She couldn't gather herbs if she didn't know her herbs. "Generally speaking, each medicine cat only shares the knowledge of their personal mixtures with their apprentice. Because these mixtures take advantage of herbs that are native to each area it would be pointless to actively teach everyone each others mixtures. So while learning from other healers is a good idea, asking them for those mixtures wouldn't go over well." Now on to the two plants he was looking at. "Look here, Ebonypaw. To gather herbs and other useful things on your own you must have knowledge of what you are looking at." He was sure she had started this training, but this was more a way of pointing out that she had really put herself in a bad place. "These two plants look exactly the same, but are they the same thing?" Ghost the Undead Goddess

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams Though it wasn't necessarily a scolding, the young she-cat was bright enough to know that she was in trouble for escaping camp. The warm feeling of embarrassment and guilt prickled underneath her thick coat while she held the gaze of her elder with a steady expression.
After a moment, the she-cat dropped her gaze to her wide and flat paws, a trait that many Stoneclanners had as it aided them when jumping and roaming the rocky terrain in which they lived. She wasn't one to often get into trouble, she knew the rules that were passed down from older cats and she knew what apprentices could and couldn't do.
But she was a Medicine Cat, her life was a little more precious that those who fought to protect their clan with their life. Her life was given in servitude to heal those who could not, to aid those with pain or aches, or those who substantiated injuries, both minor and major.
And yet, because of her curious nature and her willingness to learn and not stand by on idle paws waiting for her lesson to be given. While young, Ebonypaw still had a lot to learn about the world around her, as well as the dangers that lurk within the shadows. Her stubborn nature, pride and curiosities were bound to get her in trouble throughout her lifetime.
That didn't mean she liked being scolded though.
Shuffling her paws for a moment, Ebonypaw finished dipping her head once she lowered it, giving Falconstorm the respect he deserved. Especially since it wasn't his job to train, mentor or punish Stoneclan's Medicine Cat Apprentice.
"I understand." Knowing her place, Ebonypaw wasn't about to point out that she had been through battle training, with Smokestorm even. Arguing wasn't something she was known for, and she didn't think that justifying her stance would aid her in this situation. Better to suck it up and accept what she had done wrong.
It was the only way to learn from one's mistakes after-all. Not that that didn't mean it would possibly happen again...
However, despite the somberness of the meeting between Ebonypaw and Falconstorm, her attention and interests were peaked once more as he accepted her question for company. He even added in the fact that he could possibly teach her a thing or two, which was exactly what the young she-cat craved at the moment.
Heat of punishment vanishing from beneath the feathered length of her black coat, the young and growing she-cat quickly fell in-step with the healer from Treeclan, that light of curiosity vivid within those pale green pools. She practically hung onto every word that left his maw as he explained the very thing that swirled within her mind when she thought of tutoring under other experienced healers.
Put on the spot, the normally confident apprentice could feel that liquid courage slowly slipping away. Her pale gaze concentrated upon the two stalks of plants Falconstorm had inquired of her but all there was within her head was a vast blankness. The nub of her tail twitched slightly as she could feel another bout of embarrassment roll through her chest almost painfully.
How foolish she must look to the elder healer.
Finally, Ebonypaw drew her pale pools from the plants to focus on Falconstorm as she shook her head. "Forgive me Falconstom, I haven't been taught these plants yet..." Sandblaze had been more keen on teaching her need mixtures and herbs for certain ailments. Like Whitecough and Greencough when Leafbare had been at it's fullest. Or even the healing of wounds after the skirmish between the clans and badgers.
Not that she was blaming her mentor for lack of specific training regiments. He was also a young healer who had just been given his own apprentice after the death of Dawnblossom before her. And yet, the realization made her think about how young and untrained she actually was.
Nine moons was not a long time for that of a learning healer. It took moons and time to get through training, longer to earn the full name of a fully ranked Medicine Cat, and she was only nine moons old. Hardly out of the nursery and from her kit given name.
"I would like to learn what they are though, if it doesn't bother you too much...?" Even though he said she could learn some stuff from him didn't mean he would be willing to train her briefly during their unexpected meeting, but the young she-cat could be hopeful. In the end, he wasn't her mentor, it wasn't up to him, but she would be forever grateful for the addition lessons.

"Its alright, I had to learn it the hard way when I stumbled through a patch when I was young. My mother about never let me live it down. Leaves of three, let it be." He flashed the youngster a smile. "Its commonly called itch-leaf or itch poisoned ivy leaves. There are a few plants that share this feature, so its best to avoid touching them altogether if you can help it. They cause severe irritation and itchiness wherever they touch. Most likely you'll see them as a three leaf plant with a stem that has a larger leaf at the end and two smaller ones off to the side. The leaves are smooth or notched on the ends and they have a pointed tip. Its reddish in newleaf, green in greenleaf, and yellow or orange in leaf-fall and you can sometimes find greenish-white berries growing on them and green or yellow flowers in newleaf." He paused letting her take it all in as he motioned with a paw at the slight reddish hue over the leaves, distinguishing them slightly from the other leaves around them. "Best thing is to avoid them, but if you touch them rinse in the river for a few minutes to get as much of it off as possible. Its irritating, but not really harmful." Ghost the Undead Goddess

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams As she had withe very lesson given to her, the young she-cat drank in every word that fell from Falconstorm's maw. Knowledge was something that she strived to learn, whether it was from Sandblaze or another healer. From a young age she had realized that she wanted to learn everything and all she could about the art of healing.
Her favorite curiosities lay within such things.
As the elder healer spoke, those pale green pools of the young she-cat scanned and double scanned over the plant that lay at her wide, flat paws. Ebonypaw was trying to memorize the shape, color and scent of the plant while also retaining the information that fluttered within her fluffy ears.
Her tail nub flickered slightly before she repeated what she had been told back to Falconstorm. "Leaves of three, let it be. It causes severe irritation and itchiness, best to wash it off immediately and to wash for a few minutes. Known as Itch-Leaf or Itch Poisoned Ivy Leaves." There was a slight well of pride within her chest as she recited.
While she didn't repeat everything Falconstorm had said, Ebonypaw did believe that what she had echoed was the proper amount of knowledge to be ordained from the encounter with this plant. However, to make sure she wasn't forgetting anything, those pale green pools quickly looked back to Treeclan's Medicine Cat.
With a flicker of her ear, tilting her head ever so slightly, she added, "Usually a three leafed plant best left alone." Often times she flooded her mentor back with as much information as he had given her, but she wasn't sure if Falconstorm was looking for all that. Not to mention, she was merely pleased that he was willing to teach her what he knew.
Ebonypaw already had a paw towards her dream of learning from all healers, as she stood there next to the older tom. The excitement within her chest only caused that look in her gaze to brighten and her nub to wriggle slightly.

He let her rattle it back at him, basics and the most important parts of what he'd told her. It was also how he'd learned as a young apprentice, bombarding his mentor with a million questions endlessly and generally driving him nuts. As Bluejay's apprentice not so much, as he'd learned to curb his curiosity by that point. "The point of this small lesson was letting you understand that its best for you to go with your mentor until you can at least identify those common plants that could cause you harm or irritation. Believe me, running accidentally through a patch of itch leaf is not something you want to deal with. For days. The itch is unbearable. The only way to treat it, other than a dunk in the river, is to crush chamomile and soak it in water then soak a leaf in the mixture and apply it to area a few times a day. Though, honestly I'd just dunk the effected area in the mixture. But I enjoy watching my clanmates squirm when they get wet." They usually only used chamomile when traveling to Moon Tree, so having another purpose to it, even a small one, was probably a surprise. "Now, should I walk you back towards your camp?" Eventually he'd have to hand the young she-cat over to her own clanmates and head home, and no one could question what he was doing there. Medicine cats could travel far and wide to gather herbs. Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams The young apprentice was pleased with her response to the older healer, though that small flush of embarrassment came back when he once again brought up the fact that she shouldn't be alone at her age. The black feline couldn't possibly bare returning back to camp itching like crazy because she had run into the wrong plant because she lacked the correct knowledge.
But, failure was apart of growth and she had failed at her singular mission, Falconstorm had not only taught her but corrected her and she would be wiser the next time she decided to venture away from the safety of Stoneclan's camp and clanmates.
And! She got to learn something new today, or rather, a few things. Ebonypaw learned not only a non-deadly but rather annoying plant to look out for, and a few ways to fix the ailment. Including Chamomile, which really wasn't used for much except traveling.
She'd be pleased to return such information to Sandblaze. Though, there was the smallest nag in the back of her mind that hoped her young mentor wasn't too displeased that she had gained help from that of a Medicine Cat from a different clan. Especially when Ebonypaw appreciated everything her own mentor did for her.
A small wriggle of amusement passed through the black feline's whiskers at Falconstorm's small note of watching clanmates struggle with itching. A small bit of humor from the former warrior now healer of Treeclan. Despite the fact that their meeting had been quite easy, it gave a small breath of life to the lesson.
Dipping her head respectfully towards the older tom, Ebonypaw parted her maw to reply in a proper manner. "Thank you very much Falconstorm." Her small nub wiggling behind her subtly as she continued. "I think it would be wise to have company back to camp." She knew it was for the best.
Besides, neither Sandblaze, Hawkstar or Smokestorm could get upset with her being accompanied by a Medicine Cat. They tended to have free rein where-ever they roamed. They were outside the troubles of clan life and avoided any conflict due to their own specific code and procedures.
And, in all honesty, Ebonypaw didn't mind spending a bit more time with the older tomcat. She rather liked his company. So with a flicker of her ear, the black apprentice turned to pad next to him, making her way towards the camp of her home.
