Dawnkit opened his eyes slowly. He had been pretending to sleep while he had waited for all the other cats in the nursery to start napping. The ends of his whiskers twitched with excitement when he realized he was the only cat up. Today, Dawnkit was going to go on a quest with none other than his sister, Paintedkit! This quest was dearly important to the tabby tom. He hadn't seen Petalrain, his birth mother, in a long while, and he was starting to miss her. Plus, he wanted to show her how much his pounce had improved. Dawnkit just knew that Petalrain would be proud of him for working on it! She was a great warrior, so she would just have to love seeing her son becoming just as good of a warrior as her. Dawnkit sat up, attempting to imitate the deep stretches he saw the bigger cats doing after they woke up from naps. Instead, the tabby kit fell over, his eyes burning with embarrassment before he remembered everyone was asleep. Dawnkit got to hit feet and padded over to his sleeping sister as quietly as possible, hoping not to wake anyone. The tabby tom prodded Paintedkit with his large paws, then resolving to a gentle headbutt to wake his sleeping sister. "Paintedkit, wake up! We have a quest to go on," he whispered, although Dawnkit's whisper was rather loud. He was not good at being subtle. He was just too excited to find Petalrain to think about the fact that their quest was a stealth mission to an extent.

Paintedkit 3 Moons - Stoneclan Kit
Her dreams had been vague, dark and depressing almost. Her short term memory failed her as it blurred away into nothing as a voice broke through the mist of unconsciousness. The young soul had been comfortable, curled up with the curve of Duskflower as the queen provided warmth and nurturing for the young kits of Petalrain. She was obviously not expecting her brother's head to softly bump into her shoulder, completely jarring her from slumber.
Tiny green pools opened, narrowing before focusing upon her brother's face scrolling with emotions that she failed to emote herself. She was in every word his opposite when it came to nature and personality. Expression blank and dim, the tortoiseshell shifted slightly to part her jaws into a yawn. The final remnants of her shattered dream whisked away like a breeze through the forest, an ear flickering as the dark kitten managed to push herself up on steady paws.
"Where do you expect to go on this quest?" Paintedkit finally asked, her rasped tone dull and flat as she seemed utterly disinterested in any sort of adventures Dawnkit had planned out within his head. It honestly didn't matter what she thought, in the end she always managed to get dragged into her brother's shenanigans. Mute green pools looked over to the snoozing form of the queen raising them, annoyance at the birth mother attempting to rise but the multicolored she-kit pushed it back down into the hidden abyss she had created for it.
She'd deal with that speck of darkness another day.

Dawnkit was positively bumbling with excitement as his sleepy sister woke up, pessimistic as always. That didn't bother the happy kit because he had enough motivation for the both of them. He hopped around Paintedkit, barely able to contain himself as he spilled the contents of their quest. "We are going to find Petalrain! She'll be so happy to see us." Dawnkit sat down long enough to add one last detail: "Plus, I'm going to show her my pounce. You should show her yours too!" Dawnkit knew his sister wasn't one to practice her hunting skills, but it only felt fair to make her feel as included as possible. Despite her lack of desire to do all the things Dawnkit found himself doing, he still loved her fiercely and wanted her to be as happy as she could physically be.
"C'mon, get up!" With one fierce push, Dawnkit moved his sister out of her nest. His sheer size allowed him to do a lot of things that kittens his size should not have been able to do, and dragging his sister around was one of them. Without looking back, Dawnkit began to clumsily creep out of the nursery, having strong faith that something would eventually compel his sister to follow him. Once he was out of the nursery, he lifted his head and sniffed the air in search of the familiar scent of his mother. He huffed with impatience. Nowhere yet. Maybe Paintedkit will know where to find her.

Paintedkit 3 Moons - Stoneclan Kit
A small growl rose in the young she-kit's throat as her brother nudged her almost annoyingly. His optimism and happy-go-lucky attitude were almost too much for her little pessimestic bubble. She didn't know where he got all his energy or why she was the one stuck dealing with it. But even as she sat there, watching her brother slip out of the nursery she knew she wasn't about to let him go wandering off on his own through Stoneclan's camp.
So, with an overly dramatic sigh in which she resisted the urge to throw her head back, the dark tortishell pulled herself to her paws and slowly trudged after Dawnkit. His excited scent was rather easy to pick up, though the moment the she-kit squeezed her way through the den entrance she practically ran into her brother. Squeaking slightly, the smaller of the two kits rubbed her nose with a fore-paw and annoyed expression plastered over her near emotionless face.
"Your grand adventure led you to the Nursery entrance." Her tone was deadbeat, lack of enthusiasm or interest as she let her near blank green pools watch Dawnkit. She didn't understand why he was so bent on finding her 'mother', as far as Paintedkit was concerned Petalrain didn't care about them so why did they have to care about her. The warrior never once stayed in the nursery except to feed them, and as soon as she was done she ran off to leave them in Duskflower's care.
If any cat were to care about their 'pouncing skills' it would be the she-cat who practically raised them, despite not giving birth to them. Or their father, Dustclaw.
"Do you even know where to find Petalrain?" Her tone was sour, the smallest hint that she really didn't want to go looking for her birth giver, but somehow Paintedkit always managed to get dragged along wherever Dawnkit went. Perhaps it was a sibling thing. In any case, it wasn't like either of the kits could get very far without being escorted back to the safety of the nursery.

Petalrain warrior of StoneClan Motherhood hadn't suited her by any means. From the moment the kits started to stir within her, she felt an odd sense of dread. Duskflower had tried to make her feel better. She'd comfort the to-be queen by offering advice. It rarely comforted Petalrain.
She was perhaps too excited the moment they were born and Duskflower offered to watch over them for her. It became an unspoken agreement. Duskflower cared for them, Petalrain fed them.
There were moments after they ate their fill that Petalrain would watch them sleep. Try to force some sort of connection. The one that queens often talked about. The longer she would stare the more stressed she got. The bond never truly forming.
She felt broken.
So she left. Fed them as needed, lucky to have Duskflower, Petalrain did the basics. She may have birthed them but she was no mother. Duskflower, a natural, took care of everything to the point Petalrain started to resent her aunt despite all that she had done. Twisted and torn up inside over the relationship. Petalrain tried to hide the jealousy that had formed like sharp thorns. It was no one's fault but her own. Blame but on herself for the shortcomings. For not being a mother that the kits deserved.
Now with the kits weaned, she had no reason to see them. She could go back to living her best life. Try and forget that she had failed at the one thing all she-cats were good at.
"You should stop your kits from leaving the nursery," Her head shot up from where she had laid down for a nap. Hawkfall stared down at her, brow raised waiting for her response.
"Where is Duskflower?"
"Went for a walk I'm guessing, just go put them back in their nest. They should be napping," He told her before stepping back to tend to something else. Annoyance appeared in her raised hackles. Putting the kits back in their nest always ended with her in there with them. Staring at their scrawny forms until they dozed. The void in her chest edging a bit wider each time she laid down with them.
Entertaining the idea of not going, Petalrain mulled over the idea until a small voice in her head told her to go. The uncomfortable feeling be damned.
"Hey! Dawnkit, Paintedkit, get back to your nest!" She called, stalking forward eyes narrowed. Perhaps if she was stern enough they'd tuck their tails and go back to bed. Duskflower could discipline them later.

Dawnkit huffed at his pessimistic sister's snide remark. He couldn't understand why she was so unwilling to go on an adventure with him! Oh well. At least she came! It was the most that the young tabby could hope for, and he was incredibly grateful for it. He turned his head to Paintedkit with a feigned look of sarcasm that he had copied from her. "Well it wouldn't be a quest if we knew where she was!"
Almost as if he had summoned Petalrain by speaking of her outside of the den, the two kits' mother came up to them, telling them they needed to be in their nest. Dawnkit tilted his head, confused as to why his mother didn't even ask why they were out. "But, but mommy," he started, his eyes confused and indignant. "I just wanted to show you my pounce. Look!"
The large tabby kit crouched down, wiggling his haunches as he focused on a leaf. Clumsily, Dawnkit jumped straight up before landing full force on the leaf, aggressively biting into it and ripping it in half.
Satisfied with his stellar performance, Dawnkit sat up with half of the leaf still in his mouth, looking between Petalrain and Paintedkit for affirmation.

Paintedkit 3 Moons - Stoneclan Kit
The introduction of a new voice had a chill quickly make it's way down the young feline's spine, instantly souring her mood more than it already was upon waking up. An ear flickered as the multicolored she-kit turned her normally blank gaze upon the arrival of Petalrain, the warrior that had birthed her and her tabby coated brother. Thought that was about all she did. It often that emotion leaked into her pale pools, but at the moment just the slightest hint of ice chipped around the edges of her irises.
"If I wanted to be in my nest then that's where i'd be." Her tone was mostly dull but there wasn't the slightest of irritation under the normal sarcastic wit that came with the feathered tortoiseshell. The tip of her plume ticked back and forth as Dawnpaw's excitement mirrored the opposite of her own feelings.
Paintedkit didn't understand why Dawnpaw was always trying to get the attention of their 'mother' when it was obvious that she really wasn't interested in anything any of them did. She only stuck around long enough to feed them before slipping back out of the den and leaving them within the loving care of Duskflower and Dustclaw. Though, despite the affection she grew up with it didn't soothe the sting of abandonment that was sharp within the painted she-cat's chest.
"At least we can eat sticks for dinner now." Paintedkit parted her maw to give a sarcastic, emotionless response to her brother's act. Though at least she acknowledged it, and in her own odd way she was congratulating Dawnkit. Those unreadable, judging pale pools watched Petalrain after her brother's show of skill upon the poor, unsuspecting twig. She doubted that the warrioress would have anything nice to say, rather she'd probably tell them in a more stern tone that they needed to return to the nursery.

Petalrain warrior of StoneClan "- mommy,"
The term of endearment sent a shiver down her spine. Instead of softening her expression, it got harder, brow furrowed even more now. She stared at Dawnkit as he spoke, trying to calm the twisted emotions tumbling within her stomach. How could a name have such an effect on her?
Eyes tracked Dawnkit as he pounced onto the leaf, it was impressive considering his age but not enough for her to give him a pass. They both should be in their nest, waiting for Duskflower's return before venturing out again. Kits could get hurt, a shudder went through her, remembering the day that cost Bettlejaw his leg and Sootwhisker her sight.
Catching Paintedkit's reaction to Dawnkit's success, Petalrain found it the right time to reinforce her direction.
"Second time I've told you both, get back to your nest. Pouncing can wait until there is someone to watch you." In a rare moment of physical contact. Petalrain nudged Dawnkit in the direction of the nursery, sensing he was the main reason they were out.

Pouncing could wait until there was someone to watch? Confused, Dawnkit felt the need to clarify to his clearly confused mother what his entire plan was. "Well, that's why I showed you! So you could," he faltered, his voice breaking ever so slightly, "watch."
Almost as soon as he had said it, Dawnkit realized what his mother really meant. She didn't want to see him. She didn't want to see Paintedkit. She didn't want to see how much work he had put into his pounce for her.
Golden eyes looked to his sister, his lip quivering ever so slightly as the two kits made eye contact. He walked over to her, pressing his head into her flank, not wanting his mother to see how strongly her words had affected him. Despite her sarcastic comments about his pounce, Dawnkit knew without a doubt that Paintedkit loved him wholeheartedly. She loves me more than Petalrain does...
Dawnkit backed his head away from his sister's side, looking back to Petalrain. Every quest had to finish with something good, or at least the promise of it. "One day you will be proud of us," he stated, flicking his tail towards Paintedkit as well. Their mother may not have loved them very much, but maybe she could learn to be proud of them. I have to try.
But for now, the two kits had completed their quest. Dawnkit licked Paintedkit's head, motioning to go back to the nursery with a flick of his ears after.
