Sedgefoot
StoneClan | Tom | 39 Moons
Sedgefoot couldn't ask for a more perfect day to start his training with Palepaw. The warm newleaf breeze blew behind them, ruffling his neck fur. The clouds above meant that the snakes that occasionally sunned themselves on the sandy plateau wouldn't bother them, giving them the perfect place to do some battle training.
As much as he enjoyed plotting and preparing for battles in his head, the idea of actually being in a real fight never appealed to him. But the idea of being in a fake fight with Palepaw, who looked more like a full-grown warrior than an apprentice at this point, would break up the monotony of the last few moons.
Palepaw was a decent she-cat, from what he knew. He knew that they had both lost a brother, except Kitekit's death from sickness wasn't nearly as gruesome as Ashpaw's at the jaws of a fox. He stopped himself from shuddering at the memory by reminding himself that the reason they were training today was to make sure a fox attack like that never took so many lives ever again.
The orange-pelted she-cat that padded alongside him wasn't his first apprentice, but the chance to impart what knowledge he had was always exciting. Of course, he'd much rather start with a fresh, 6-moon old apprentice - Palepaw had nearly finished her training before Wolfjaw stepped aside. Last night, while his sister Honeynose dozed beside him in their den, he lie awake thinking about what the other warrior must have already taught her and how he could build off of that.
Sedgefoot came to the conclusion that because Wolfjaw was so large and muscular, sparring with a thinner, leaner opponent like him would be good experience for her. He'd focus his lessons on agility and strategy over brute strength.
When they finally approached the rock, Sedgefoot leapt up to it with ease and turned to give his apprentice a warning flick of his tail, telling her silently not to jump up and follow.
"When your opponent is above you, you are at a disadvantage." He began, pacing slowly back and forth along the ledge. "Especially if the sun was out, and you couldn't see me through the glare. But it's your lucky day! You can see me clearly and anticipate my next move." Or can you? The tom let out a tiny mrow of amusement - he had forgotten how fun this was! "Now, try to dodge and defend yourself from my attack."
He gave her a few heartbeats to prepare before he pounced, pushing off the rock with his long back legs. He was hoping that she'd dodge left or right, because he didn't want to land on her - he wanted to land behind her. Then, he'd pivot quickly to leap on her back and throw her off balance.
