Come on.
One step. Two steps. A quickening pace.
It's going to happen this time. I know it.
Left foot, right foot. Faster and faster until Thistlepaw's plodding along turned into a brisk walk. Already she could feel her claws seeping into the ground, trying to keep her from running. But this time she had a plan. Thistlepaw flexed her paws harder and harder until her toes no longer touched the ground. Her claws would not be able to slow her down this time.
Gradually, Thistlepaw began to push harder off of the ground with her back legs, propelling herself forward. Toes off the ground. Toes off the ground. The rhythm of her feet hitting the ground began to steadily increase until she was at a very slow run. It was not good by any means, and Thistlepaw's flexed paws proved to be a rather odd sight, but it was something. Thistlepaw was running for the first time since she had humiliated herself previously at the nursery by falling on her face.
Her pace increased ever so slightly. Thistlepaw could now feel the breeze rustling through her fur. The few trees around her almost felt like a blur, not because of Thistlepaw's speed, but because of the high she was experiencing. This is what it is means to be a member of Lightningclan. To run and feel connected to the wind, to the sky, to the world. This was it.
The warm sun, the rushing wind, the moving grasses. These sensations proved to be too much for the young apprentice. Thistlepaw lost herself in the moment just long enough to forget one crucial detail to her running. Toes up.
Soon, the warm sun became dry dirt, the rushing wind came to a crashing halt, and the moving grasses instead became stagnant as Thistlepaw's front claw got caught in the ground and caused her to topple over. Thistlepaw winced in pain at her claw being tugged on, but even that pain could not take away the ecstasy that she was feeling.
I can run. Thistlepaw got up, shaking off the dirt and looking back to her starting point, which seemed so far away. I can run. She looked to the sky, then down at her paws with her long claws. I can run. It was no longer a distant dream to become equal to the other cats of Lightningclan. I can run. Her run was by no means on par with even the slowest Lightningclan apprentices, but it was a start. Thistlepaw looked to the sky, her determined eyes daring the members of Starclan to prove her otherwise. "I can run!"
