Lotuswhisker
63 Moons || Warrior-Queen || RainClan
Sunshine splashed over the cold, snow-choked banks of RainClan's River. Lotuswhisker tested the water with a paw, shivering so hard her whiskers trembled as she felt the icy water shock the sensitive paw-pads. Buck up. It can't be helped. She had to continue Yarrowpaw's training. Their sessions together this past winter had been isolated to fishing and struggling to catch whatever land prey they could find. Lotuswhisker had encouraged her to go on hunting patrols, to make sure she was learning as much from their Clanmates as she was from Lotuswhisker.
Battle training wasn't Lotuswhisker's strongest field. If anything, it brought back unpleasant memories of Leopardyowl's aggressiveness, of the glares and the hateful words he'd thrown at her like flicking dung off his claws. Despite these unpleasant sensations welling up in Lotuswhisker's heart, she couldn't let the past interfere with the future — especially not Yarrowpaw's future, a she-cat who had nothing to do with the Civil War and it's long-lasting scars.
"Ready, Yarrowpaw? Your opponent should already be there, waiting for us." Lotuswhisker's deep brown coat was fluffed to its maximum size, her white chin and throat helpful when it came to hunting land prey, but that would offer no uses here. "It's chilly, but I promise we'll warm up during your mock battle."
With a soft brush of her tail against the apprentice's shoulder, Lotuswhisker took a full breath, holding it as she felt the icy river water press against her belly fur, and swam across.
An orange and white tom was there to greet them when they finally set paw on the sand bank. Lotuswhisker purred a greeting, feeling as if she were meeting up with a nephew. "Did we keep you waiting? I'm sorry, I wanted to make sure Yarrowpaw ate first."
"S'no trouble," said Goldhawk, looking bright-eyed and eager to begin.
Lotuswhisker and Poppyflame's friendship had been allowed to deteriorate in the past few moons Poppyflame had been alive; not because of bad blood, but because of their lives simply spinning in opposite directions. Despite that, Lotuswhisker still watched over Poppyflame's three kits with the fondness and genuine concern of an aunt; Berrybreeze, Frogchaser and Goldhawk. They were kind, capable warriors. It hadn't been that long ago they'd been apprentices themselves, after all.
"Whenever you're ready, Yarrowpaw," Lotuswhisker spoke up after shaking the ice water from her pelt. "I want you to battle Goldhawk. The winner has to knock their opponent into the water." Oh StarClan, is that too harsh? Lotuswhisker's tail tip flicked. She'd thought, perhaps, that it would be good incentive to win...
"Don't forget the basics," said Lotuswhisker. "I know he's older, but don't be afraid. You're almost a warrior, too." She smiled encouragingly, hoping this would go well.
