Briarthroat's brisk dismissal of the battle party back to camp, his clear displeasure in their initiative, were things Darkstorm could not comprehend. They had freed him from having to go against Foxstar's passivity and gotten the branch trail back all at once. He should have been pleased in Darkstorm's opinion. Perhaps he would have to punish them for show, to continue to provide a united front with Foxstar, but his disappointment in their actions had not seemed at all feigned. The walk back to camp was a proud one, regardless. Briarthroat's chastisement for doing what should have been done moons ago rolled off her pelt like water off a duck feather, their victory shielding her from the deputy’s disapproval. At least Briarthroat had recognized the result. She had warned him that the Clan would not wait while their leaders gave them only silence in response to their increasing restlessness and impatience over the situation with TreeClan. Hopefully now Foxstar would be more forthcoming with any supposed future plans instead of leaving the Clan wondering if she was too weak to lead them and forcing them to take matters into their own claws. Now that the rush of battle was over, the pains of wounds sustained were starting to push through. Nothing she couldn't handle, but all of them would likely require a quick visit to their medicine cats. She looked forward to regaling her brother with the story of their victory. Whether he would appreciate it or not was another matter. It made sense that he wasn’t quite as battle hungry as she was, considering his role as a medicine cat, but surely he would be glad they had the branch trail back at least? Darkstorm let the younger warriors, Crowflame and Graywolf, fill the Clan in as she pleased as she headed for the medicine den to update her brother herself, pausing beside her former apprentice and her littermate, “You two fought well, no matter what anyone says. No one can take your victory from you.” She gave them both an approving nod and padded on, sure they would both be eager to share the details of their first real battle with every cat with ears to listen. “Shadowchaser!” she called ahead when she reached the medicine den, “We won the branch trail back!” Her voice was full of pride for their victory, “Those squirrelchasers barely mounted a decent defense.” That black and white tom had still landed a few scratches, a decent one on her flank and cheek, and when she’d gone to help Ashfang she’d gotten a bite on her foreleg before TreeClan’s retreat had been called.

curiosity is not a sin... ...but we should exercise caution with our curiosity Shadowchaser Shadowchaser did not share in his sister's triumph. Rather, he wore a tight-lipped expression, the subtle flicking at the end of his tail conveying that he wasn't as amicable as he usually was. The last thing he'd wanted to do this morning was treat a pawful of injured cats that had thrown themselves into a battle without permission. Defending themselves was one thing, but taking matters into their own paws like they had? It was disrespectful at best, and... rebellious at worst.
"Sorry Darkstorm," he mewed slowly, sternly. "I don't want to stand around talking. I have a lot of cats to treat." And so does Falconstorm now too, with leafbare right around the corner. Despite the sustained injuries, Blackwolf had not made his way over to the medicine cat's den right away, like any sensible cat would. Shadowchaser wasn't sure what he'd say even if the tom had gone straight to Smokefur's den; he wasn't sure he could be calm and professional enough to keep the disapproval off his face.
Blackwolf had a lot of influence in the Clan, no cat could deny that. Darkstorm in particular admired the grizzled old warmonger, but she also wasn't the type to blindly follow anyone with half a plan. She'd gone with the group of her own choice - along with Hollystorm, Crowflame, Graywolf, and Ashfang. Shadowchaser released a tight exhale, tail flicking faster as he selected a dock leaf from the nearby pile. "Anything serious?" He asked, wanting to be quick - but thorough - hoping her eagerness to share her victory with her Clanmates would distract her from his increasing disapproval.
For the first time since they'd been kits, Shadowchaser felt the urge to lecture her. To scold, and he did not enjoy it. To argue with Darkstorm, Thornscar or Cobrastrike was like bashing one's head into a tree stump. Darkstorm’s fiery gaze narrowed slightly at her brother as she tried to determine if his shortness with her was simply because he had work to do or something more. Was it possible he disapproved? He didn’t seem very excited about their victory, after all. Was it just because he had wounds to treat? Her tail flicked back and forth as he fetched some sort of leaf, watching him appraisingly. “I got a nasty bite on my leg,” she held up one foreleg where a deep bite was visible, “My flank and cheek could probably use something too. I wouldn’t want to catch anything from those TreeClan mangepelts.” She sat, tail still flicking, and shifted her weight to the side without the flank injury. “You should have seen Crowflame and Graywolf. You’d never know it was their first real battle,” pride warmed her tone for the two younger she-cats, “Of course, they are Blackwolf’s kin, so it should be expected that they do well in battle. Especially with the training they had.” That she and Thornscar had mentored the sisters was just another point of pride. Shadowchaser may not want to talk, but did he really expect her to sit here in silence while he worked? If he didn’t want to talk, fine, but there was nothing stopping her. “Leaf-bare should be easier now that we have our proper territory back and TreeClan won’t be stealing our prey. About time, too. We should have chased them off our territory ages ago.”

curiosity is not a sin... ...but we should exercise caution with our curiosity Shadowchaser Shadowchaser examined the bite she'd indicated, not liking the way it marred her dark fur, revealing damaged skin underneath. He rasped his tongue over the wound, cleaning up the blood that clumped the hairs together and obscured his view. Darkstorm yammered on about their victory, and he could practically hear her heart singing in her breast from the adrenaline rush and the high of winning.
“Leaf-bare should be easier now that we have our proper territory back and TreeClan won’t be stealing our prey. About time, too. We should have chased them off our territory ages ago.”
The dark brown tom's tail twitched, and he stepped back as much to take a deep breath as he did to collect the herbs he would need. Did Darkstorm really think that now was a good time to be expanding their territory? (or as others in the Clan would put it, reclaiming what was theirs). Shadowchaser gingerly pawed a small bulb of wild garlic from their herb stores, rolling it across the uneven stone floor of the medicine cat's den until Darkstorm's paws prevented it from going any further.
"I'm glad they did well. I hope they weren't injured severely." Shadowchaser didn't force a smile, rather he held his sister's gaze evenly. "I know you're happy about winning back the branch trail." But...
Shadowchaser averted his gaze, his irritation with his sister tempered by no actual desire to fight. "I think Blackwolf made a mistake. He disrespected Foxstar and Briarthroat, and now Smokefur and I are going to use up precious herbs to heal injuries that shouldn't have happened." All he'd wanted to do when he'd got back from the gathering was curl up in his nest to recuperate; instead, he had been placed on standby while Briarthroat and a pack of warriors went to collect their disobedient companions.
The chestnut brown tom shook his head. "I know I'm just a medicine cat. Maybe my opinions about battles don't count. But next time, Darkstorm, please think about more than just scentlines and rubbing TreeClan's noses in frogdung." medicine cat of nightclan |

Shadowchaser’s verbal hesitation all but confirmed Darkstorm’s suspicions about where her brother’s opinions fell. Her fiery gaze narrowed as he averted his, the fur along her spine rippling with irritation, the only thing keeping her from baring her teeth was the fact that this was her brother she was dealing with. She was not known for her self control, but she managed to dredge some up where her family was concerned. And so she took a moment to allow the burning in her blood to cool before she spoke, though his last comment stung on a personal level. “ Everything I do is for NightClan, Shadowchaser. This was about more than just getting back at TreeClan! They stole our territory, and I’ll remind you, they had no problem doing it right before leaf-bare set in either. They made the hardest season harder for us by taking what was rightfully ours and we sat back and did nothing for season upon season. We gave Foxstar plenty of time to act, and all we ever got were empty excuses and procrastination.” Her tail was whipped behind her as she was unable to control her frustration over her brother’s lack of understanding, “I warned Briarthroat that the Clan would not continue to sit and wait while Foxstar hides in her den and says and does nothing. How do you expect the Clan to trust and respect a leader that barely even communicates with us? She tells us nothing of any supposed plans for retaliation, for reclaiming our land. Now was the right time for this. Before leaf-bare sets in. What we did, we did for the good of a Clan with a leader too weak to do what needs to be done. I will never regret it, and I would do it again if I had to.” She stood then, before he could apply any more of his herbs, “If you’re concerned about this affecting your herb supply for leaf-bare, fine. None of my wounds are bad enough I can’t live with them. Save your herbs for cats who need it more, then. I won’t contribute to a possible leaf-bare herb shortage. I didn’t do this to solve one problem only to create another.” She turned to leave, casting a disapproving glance of her own back at her brother, “I will never consider claiming more territory to help us through leaf-bare a mistake, especially when that territory belongs to us in the first place, and that you do is concerning.”

curiosity is not a sin... ...but we should exercise caution with our curiosity Shadowchaser Darkstorm's sharp retort grazed Shadowchaser's whiskers, and his face visibly contorted into an expression of unease and answering irritation. She truly believes that she's doing what's best for the Clan. Even if that pitted her against him, her very own brother, and anyone else that dared offer a conflicting opinion. Shadowchaser grimaced, and hastily lurched forward, touching her flank with his paw to stop her from going. He wasn't blocking her path - she could keep walking if she chose, but he didn't want the conversation to end like this.
"Don't storm off. Infected wounds will cost even more herbs. You did what you thought was right, Darkstorm." Shadowchaser's tone softened, turning peaceable. Arguments didn't solve anything. "Taking back the branch trail was probably for the best. I just want you to know that there's... more going on than just excuses from Foxstar." He couldn't bring himself to say the words; Foxstar isn't getting better and I don't know what to do. He couldn't bring himself to tell Darkstorm just how much Foxstar's mysterious illness bothered him - and how little her chances of recovery seemed.
"It's not just a herb shortage that concerns me, Darkstorm. If our Clanmates - old warriors like Blackwolf, to new warriors like Crowflame and Graywolf - stop listening to Briarthroat and Foxstar... It won't lead to anything good." Shadowchaser exhaled softly, letting some of the tension out with the quiet breath. "What if even more cats start taking matters into their own paws? What if we want the wooded marsh next, and some young warriors get it into their heads that they can move the scentline themselves? Those are the things I wonder about. Maybe I'm being foolish, I don't know."
What point was he trying to make? Shadowchaser wearily flicked the tip of his tail. "Maybe there was a better time and a better method to take back the branch trail. That's all." medicine cat of nightclan |

Her brother's admission that at least he recognized her actions as steps she had taken for the good of the Clan eased some of the tension in Darkstorm's body. Maybe he didn't have to agree with her about them, but as long as he knew that much, perhaps she could let it go. She did not want to fight with her siblings… but if they ever put themselves between her and what she thought was best for NightClan, she had no doubt that she would. So she stopped when her brother reached out, drew in a deep breath and let it out. His admission that there was more to Foxstar's situation caught her attention and she turned back to him, but he didn't seem keen to say more on the subject. Her ears flicked in irritation, but he was a medicine cat and she vaguely understood that there was a certain relationship between leader and medicine cat. They were the only cats in the Clan touched by StarClan, together they ensured the health and safety of the Clan as a whole. She supposed there might be times when leader and medicine cat confided only in each other, things that should perhaps stay between them for the good of the Clan… but that didn't mean she had to like it. She returned to a seated position as Shadowchaser aired his concerns, ready to allow him to continue his job. “If our Clanmates - old warriors like Blackwolf, to new warriors like Crowflame and Graywolf - stop listening to Briarthroat and Foxstar... It won't lead to anything good.”Her tone was cold when she responded, though the frost was not aimed at Shadowchaser but rather the subject of their conversation, “Perhaps we would listen if our leader ever deigned to speak.” Her tail flicked, “I do see your point, Shadowchaser. If NightClan does not follow their leader, chaos is a real possibility. But in order to follow a leader, we first need to have one that is actually leading. As I told Briarthroat, if Foxstar is too weak to make the decisions that need to be made, she should step down. You should pass that along to her, perhaps she'll listen to a medicine cat.” Her tail flicked again, dismissively this time, “Whatever better time and method there was to take back what is ours is long past. There's no use dwelling on it any longer. If our actions tonight force Foxstar into motion, then it was worth whatever ire we drew from our current leadership and whatever consequence comes with it.”
