Owlmind
And thus grant you Wisdom, Courage, and Strategy You're a star, you really are You're the one shining bright from all the rest in the dark A champion with nerves of stone You trained for this since the day you were born
Leafbare always made it hard to train, especially living on the open moorlands where the wind had direct access to any cat that wasn't hunkered down within a sheltered, warm den. However, despite the downfall of icy winds and frosty paws, it also toughened the warriors of Lightningclan, made them more durable to the extremes they had to face during the hottest and coldest times of the seasonal cycle.
She hated the cold.
Her coat was too short and light for weather like this. No matter how many moons she had survived, she always swore the frost was going to be the death of her.
Owlmind's ears twitched, frozen from the cold wind as her thin tail attempted to keep her paws warm, which, would have been fine if there wasn't snow covering the ground. But despite her unfavorable opinion to the weather, her innate desire to teach young minds had her sitting opposite her young apprentice. Today would be spent on hunting, and rather than Owlmind being there just to observe and correct positions when needed, the senior warrior had a different plan in mind.
Redscar, her long coated brother and the deputy of Lightningclan, would be along shortly with his own apprentice: Lynxpaw.
Owlmind was curious to see how Lightningpaw handled herself in a situation with an older and more experienced apprentice. She was also genuinely curious as to how Lynxpaw's training was coming along as well. Being of a strategical mind, it was always important to keep tabs on her fellow clan-mates abilities, should a situation arise that was ever in need of them.
"Hunting." Owlmind rasped in her tone that drill instructor like tone as her focus narrowed in on Lightningpaw's shape across from her. "Today you will be competing with Lynxpaw. It's not necessarily an assessment as it is more practice." In all honesty, the senior warrior wasn't entirely sure if the two apprentices would have any luck finding prey today, especially if the wind got any colder than it was now.
However...
"Now, Lynxpaw is older than you and is more experienced, but I don't want that to dampen your spirit." If anything could dampen Lightningpaw's spirit anyways. Owlmind was confident within her ward however and even if the pale tabby apprentice was unable to catch anything out within this weather the gray mentor would still be proud, "Just remember what you have learned and be cautious and aware of your surroundings."
There was no doubt in Owlmind's head that Lightningpaw would be a tremendous warrior one day, she had the heart for it. The senior warrior enjoyed teaching her, watching as she learned and improved. One of many apprentices, the gray feline found each one was more thrilling than the last, and as she taught them, they also taught her. There is always a bond between mentor and apprentice. Full of pain, full of sweat, full of tears But never giving up or giving into the fear A quick breath for the ones you love Props to the gods as they watch from above

L Y N X P A W I've got the eye of a fighter Dancing through the fire With her usual rush of energy, Lynxpaw charged ahead of Redscar. She could see Owlmind and Lightningpaw up ahead, and she headed for them, mindless of the exertion she was wasting. Only when closer did she skid to a halt, grass threading between her toes as she halted, head up and eyes bright. “Hi! I hope we aren’t too late, Redscar’s really good at dragging his paws. I tried to hurry him up, honest.”
Turning to Lightningpaw, Lynxpaw continued. “What are we doing? Hunting, right? I bet you’d be a great hunter, you’ve got the form for chasing rabbits. Are we working together or against each other?” she asked, turning to Owlmind again before craning her head over her shoulder to see how close her own mentor was to catching up so they could begin. And you're gonna hear me roar

Owlmind might have been content to sit and wait but Lightningpaw sure wasn’t. It was another freezing day, the wind tore through her short pelt like claws, at times leaving her wondering if she had lost her fur somewhere along the way, for all the good it did her. So as Owlmind sat looking perfectly patient to wait there in the wind all day as far as Lightningpaw could tell, the younger she-cat bounced from paw to paw, shifting in some hope that the movement might keep her warmer. She couldn’t exactly tell if it was actually working or not, but she kept at it anyway. She knew they weren’t training alone today, but it wasn’t until her mentor spoke up after a moment that she found out just who it would be. She had expected maybe one of her siblings, but instead…. Lynxpaw! Lightningpaw quivered, feeling suddenly, inexplicably warm. Lynxpaw was so cool, so fierce, so brave! Of course she was, she was the leader’s daughter and being trained by the deputy. There’s no way she wouldn’t be absolutely, completely, amazing. And she was going to get to train with her today! Suddenly a familiar shape was darting right for them and Lightningpaw broke into a grin as Lynxpaw skidded to a halt. Her eyes went wide as Lynxpaw suggested she was a great hunter, and she once again felt a flood of heat under her pelt. “W-wow… thanks, Lynxpaw! Uh, we, uh, Owlmind said… I guess we’re competing? I-I know I don’t stand a chance against someone as amazing as you, but I’ll do my best to at least make it a challenge!” Awe and determination mixed in her gaze as she grinned at Lynxpaw once more. She didn’t want to waste Lynxpaw’s time by not even proving to be a decent opponent. Taxx Ghost the Undead Goddess @poptart

Owlmind LightningClan || 63 Moons || Senior Warrior There were multiple reasons that caused the stiff features of the senior warrioress's expression to soften as amusement rippled through wide amber pools set upon her narrow face. It wasn't often that something could break through that tougher exterior, especially when she was set in mentor mode and the drill sergant facade fell into place.
The change in her own ward's behavior upon the arrival of Redscar's apprentice was something new, the wide eyes and starstruck expression gave enough information to tell that Lightningpaw quite possibly looked up to Lynxpaw. And of course, the enthusiasm that rolled off the older apprentice as she came bounding forwards, beating her mentor as he 'dragged' behind. Though, the interaction between the two young she-cat's is what really broke through the gray oriental's more strict persona.
They both were encouraging and supporting of each other.
Good.
Flickering her long tail, Owlmind brought herself to her paws quickly replacing the amusement with business. Wide amber eyes ran over Lightningpaw before repeating the process with Lynxpaw before dropping her jaw to speak. "Normally, you would work together to catch prey. It would logically be the correct thing to do during Leafbare, but Redscar and I want to add the element of competition." Her voice was that familiar rasp as she started by the time her red coated brother made it to her side. She flicked her ear to rid herself of the annoyance at the fact he managed to bare a longer pelt than she did.
This training session was all about strategy when it came to hunting. While Owlmind was aware that neither Lynxpaw or Lightningpaw might not be able to catch much, with it being so chilly outside, it gave her even more incentive to add in a rivalry for the time being. They needed to be confident in their skills, they needed to execute them correctly.
"This training assessment is not only about catching a rabbit or a mouse," The gray she-cat continued as she padded in a slow circle around the two younger she-cat's while she spoke, noting that she kept their attention as their eyes followed her movements. "We will be watching your ability to track, the skills you perform and the way you conduct yourself upon your hunt." Her gaze paused on Lightningpaw, wondering if the young feline would attempt to hunt using the tunnels.
Over the course of their training Owlmind had taken her young apprentice through several tunnels and taught her the beginnings of hunting and battling down below the moorlands. It was something that the older feline held interest in when it came to battle, but the young tabby was ever so interested in the intricate system below ground, it made training all the more quicker and efficient.
"Lightningpaw, Lynxpaw, remember that this is a friendly competition, and may the odds be in your favor." Owlmind took a step back, gesturing with her tail that the two were free to head off in their chosen directions. The senior warrior sent a quick prayer to Starclan that both apprentices ended up with prey to show for their efforts on this windy, chilly day. Lightningclan could use some fresh kill.

L Y N X P A W I've got the eye of a fighter Dancing through the fire Suddenly faced with the younger apprentice- the bright-eyed, clearly idolizing apprentice- Lynxpaw forced herself to steady, suddenly all too cautious about making a fool of herself. She purred, reaching out a paw to brush Lightningpaw's shoulder. "You'll do great, I'm sure of it." Green eyes turned back to Owlmind then, taking in what she said and fighting against the growing itch in her paws that made her want to shrug off these rules and just dart off after the first thing that moved.
She just managed to make it to the end of the gray warrior's long-winded speech before tossing another glance over her shoulder at Lightningpaw. "Loser gets the winner's chores?" she offered, adding a further incentive toward winning- not that she had any doubts about her abilities. She was older, bigger, and had been training longer; why wouldn't she win? "Ready, go!"
And she was off. Making far too much noise at first as she crashed into the grass, struggling to slow her steps and assume the quiet stalk she'd been shown over and over. Her heart was pounding and the almost choking need to win battled with sense; if she charged along after everything that flickered in the grass she'd never catch anything. No matter how much she wanted to run, and race, and prove herself. Claws sank into the slush underpaw and she forced herself to breathe before moving on again.
She caught a mouse easily enough, but the bird she spotted caught sight of her just before she lunged and she wasn't fast enough to catch it. "Haredung!" she spat after it, stub tail jerking side to side, before dropping down once more and continuing on, making a catch soon after of another mouse before deciding it was time to try for a rabbit. Mice were great and all, but they were so small, barely a mouthful- rabbits were much harder, and yet that much more rewarding. She knew where there was a hole, and she quickly buried her last catch before heading off toward it. And you're gonna hear me roar

Ducking her head a bit shyly at Lynxpaw’s encouragement, Lightningpaw purred softly. Lynxpaw was sure she’d do great. Oh, StarClan, now she had to do well! When Owlmind began to speak again, her attention returned to her mentor. A soft sigh of disappointment escaped her at the loss of opportunity to work with Lynxpaw rather than against her. She was certain she was going to lose. Lynxpaw was older, more experienced, the leader’s daughter, the deputy’s apprentice. There was no way Lightningpaw would be able to keep up. And if she did win then it would just be by pure dumb luck and she surely wouldn’t really deserve it. Still, she planned to give it her all. Just because she was all but guaranteed to lose didn’t mean she was going to give up before they’d begun. She could still show Lynxpaw what she could do. Lightningpaw’s long tail twitched back and forth, shifting with her weight from paw to paw as she waited impatiently to be given the okay to begin. Finally, Owlmind gestured for them to begin, but just as she was preparing to toss a good luck at Lynxpaw and take off like her namesake, Lynxpaw spoke first. Oh, no… now she was going to have extra chores for sure…. But, at least they were Lynxpaw’s chores. And if she was doing Lynxpaw’s chores then Lynxpaw would have more time to be awesome. Her whiskers quivered uncertainly, but she nodded, right before Lynxpaw gave a starting call and crashed away. “Ah!” Lightningpaw darted off in the opposite direction, paws skidding on the slush and snow. Her jaws parted, seeking the scent of prey, and her gaze brightened as she caught a rabbit’s a trail. She followed it as it grew fresher and fresher, slowing as she drew closer where the creature must be hiding, or maybe trying to find food of its own. It didn’t really matter to Lightningpaw what it was doing. She didn’t notice how the scent led her back toward where Lynxpaw had gone, she was too focused on catching it, on having something impressive to show off, even if she didn’t catch the most prey. She paused, one paw raised, as she caught sight of brown fur up ahead. She dropped into a crouch, creeping forward. Its back was turned to her. To her horror, after a moment she realized the wind was blowing her scent right at it, however, and so she panicked and took off, charging right toward it. Why wasn’t it running? Well, who was she to question it. Maybe it was sick or hurt. She threw herself at it, claws outstretched, only to realize far too late that it wasn’t a rabbit at all. Lynxpaw!? L Y N X P A W I've got the eye of a fighter Dancing through the fire Crouched beside a tunnel, the whole area reeking with rabbit scent, Lynxpaw was debating her willingness to venture into the darkness in the hopes of catching one of the creatures. She'd never gone down one of them before, hadn't ever wanted to, but there were definitely rabbits down there... fear of getting lost battled with her fierce desire to win and she shifted her weight, leaning closer- but the darkness remained unbroken and she sighed. Maybe it'd be better to go elsewhere.
Then, over the smell of rabbit, she caught Lightningpaw's fresh scent; a moment later, paws were crashing toward her. Lifting her head and looking behind, she caught sight of the younger apprentice just as she sprang, the split second giving Lynxpaw time to notice the look of determination shift to shock before she crashed into Lynxpaw and sent her sprawling headfirst into the tunnel. Recoiling, she sprang to her paws and whipped around, unable to hide the instantaneous ripple of fur along her body. "What are you doing?" she snapped. "We're supposed to be hunting! You've probably scared off everything now!" And you're gonna hear me roar

Crashing with Lynxpaw into the tunnel the older apprentice had been inspecting, Lightningpaw disentangled herself as quickly as she could, burning embarrassment beneath her silver tabby pelt. How could she have mistaken Lynxpaw for a rabbit!? Lynxpaw snapped at her, furthering her humiliation over her horrible mistake. Her ears flattened to her head and she flinched back as though Lynxpaw had struck her.
“I- I didn’t- I thought- rabbit- you- I mean… I’m so sorry,” she stammered in a rush, the mixture of shock, confusion, shame, and adrenaline making it hard to form a coherent sentence. She turned quickly and fled the premises before Lynxpaw could demand more of an answer for her ridiculous actions that had most certainly ruined the older she-cat’s hunt. Oh no, what if Lynxpaw thought she was trying to sabotage her!? This was horrible.
She forced her paws to slow once she had run far away from the mess she’d made and took stock of her surroundings, heart pounding and feeling sick to her stomach over what Lynxpaw was going to think of her now. Hopefully she could find a mouse to catch or something and then Owlmind would let her curl up into her nest for the rest of forever so she could pretend this never happened. Why did she have to mess up so bad today of all days? She wasn’t normally this terrible. Taxx Ghost the Undead Goddess @poptart

L Y N X P A W I've got the eye of a fighter Dancing through the fire Her flank was stinging a bit from the pricks of sharp claws that had sunk through her pelt. She didn't think she was bleeding- a quick sniff gave off no blood-scent, which was a relief, and Lynxpaw smoothed down her fur again as Lightningpaw babbled an explanation. “I- I didn’t- I thought- rabbit- you- I mean… I’m so sorry.” And then she was darting off before Lynxpaw had managed to draw breath to tell her to stop stammering and the older apprentice was left staring after the younger.
A blink of confusion before she began to pad after the younger apprentice, utterly at a loss. Had she been chasing a rabbit? Lynxpaw hadn't seen or heard one, though, just Lightningpaw as she hurled herself at the brown tabby, and the sudden flicker of suspicion made her pause. Had the younger mistake her for a rabbit? Fur bristled down her spine at the thought and she glanced back at the tunnel. With her brown fur, sitting at the mouth of the burrow- even her stupid lack of a tail, and as if thinking about it gave it life the nub twitched.
Eyes narrowed and Lynxpaw gave a bad-tempered growl as she stomped off to collect her mice. She was done hunting, if hare-brained apprentices were going to mistake her for prey. And you're gonna hear me roar
