Lionstar
The crown is getting heavy
But they've written my name in the stars
But they've written my name in the stars
It had been one of Lionstar's busier mornings. Though Gorsetail was tasked with assigning patrols and monitoring TreeClan's general wellness, Lionstar kept himself busy. He visited the nursery and the medicine cat's den, as much to remind them that he was a trustworthy presence or a beacon of safety should anyone need him. He checked in with the other mentors (several of which were many of his former apprentices), made time for Honeysong, and hunted as often as a leader's busy day allowed.
When he wasn't interacting with Clanmates and generally being present in every day camp life, Lionstar was in his den, brooding over matters that needed his or his deputy's attention.
But on this bright greenleaf morning, Lionstar was breaking out of his usual patterns. Training Lilypaw was both a challenge and a blessing; he had the rare opportunity to spend time with his daughter, to nurture her in a way many parents did not get the chance to after an apprentice was handed over to their new mentor. However, Lionstar also needed to think unconventionally in order to work with his daughter's handicap and achieve the goal of warriorhood.
"I want you to meet me at the Great Maple, Lilypaw." He looked into her clouded eyes and smiled, though she could not see her father's expression. "We're doing scentwork today, and focusing on your hunting technique. If we make good progress, we'll move on to catching live prey."
It was tough, leaving her to walk through the forest on her own, but Lionstar would never be too far. He needed to see if she could follow a simple scent trail to its source - if she couldn't, then this scavenger-hunt he'd devised would be less than effective.
She is training to become a warrior, Lionstar reminded himself. She is no different than Ivypaw or Brackenpaw, she just learns at a different rate, of no fault of her own. Lilypaw was his toughest apprentice to date - but not for the usual reasons. She was kind and attentive and smart, but sometimes Lionstar wondered if he was the right cat to be teaching her.
Despite these doubts, Lionstar pressed on. He would give it his all and then some. It was the very least any father could do for his offspring.
With a soft goodbye, Lionstar slipped into the lush green vegetation, letting his golden pelt rustle against the greening twigs and berry clusters. All she had to do was follow his trail.
He had taken the time to scent mark a path from TreeClan's camp to the Great Maple. The Great Maple was on the other side of camp - the side that did not align with the Sparkling Brook. There was no chance of her falling into the water unless she somehow got herself turned around.
I've been building up all these kingdoms for so long
It's good to be king
