Teller of the Mountain Sky

The early morning chill permeated the cave; it was the sort of weather than invited the groups of cats to curl up together to share body heat. It might warm up later, Skyteller thought, tipping his head back to gaze through the small hole in the roof of his alcove. Rain dripped down the sides of the hole, pattering gently against the ground, but not enough to bother him. His nest was well out of the way of the hole, and it was warm enough for him. Not that the cool air made much of an impact on him anyway, with his fur. The surface of one of the small pools of water rippled as a drop of rain fell into it, and Skyteller blinked over at it. The little pool shimmered as the ripples spread outward, bouncing off the edge and returning to the center before fading. A faint sense of unease sent his tail flicking in a moment of restlessness; in the next moment, however, pawsteps and the form of the newest addition to the ranks of prey-hunters pulled his attention away from the pool. The scent of rabbit accompanied the young she-cat, and Skyteller rose, stretching his spine in a high arch before stepping from his nest with a purr of greeting. "Hello, Eagle! You're up early- are you scheduled for a patrol this morning?" His nose twitched at the scent of the prey, but he ignored that for the moment, sitting down as he waited for Eagle to respond, hoping that she had at least a moment to spare before other duties pulled her away. @calico

Eagle, returning from her patrol attempting to carry a rabbit that was almost as big as she was, almost tripped over its hind legs (which would have sent her sprawling into Skyteller's pool).

That would have been a fine way of making an impression. He certainly wouldn't have forgotten me in a hurry.

Eagle didn't mean to be so awkward and clumsy. There were just so many things that she was learning all in a very short space of time. The rabbit she was carrying wasn't caught by her personally, it was more of a team effort between River and Dusk. 

So they could focus on the rest of their hunt, Eagle had been sent back with the rabbit, under strict orders not to eat it, to add it to the prey pile so it could be shared once all the morning patrols had returned. 

A tall order for her, with the tantalising scent of it wafting through her sensitive nose, and the rapidly fading warmth of its body warming her pelt. 

But, she'd managed it. She was back in camp, had narrowly avoided falling into Skyteller's pool, when his voice called to her. 

Putting the rabbit down gently, so as not to show disrespect to the piece of caught-prey, she dipped her head in respect, before letting out a purr. 

Dusk and River took me out for some early morning's teaching. I'll most likely go on patrol with them later, but right now they're finishing their hunt. They asked me to come back with this to add to the pile." She gestured with her tail to the now cold rabbit. "Speaking of which, have you eaten yet? I was told to take it straight to the pile, but you're important."

Eagle stumbled, her front paws tangling with the trailing hind legs of the rabbit, and a few loose pebbles skittered across the floor into the pool. At least she managed to keep her balance and not follow them. Steady again, the young she-cat set the rabbit down and answered his question. Out early on patrol, good. River was clearly pleased about having another to-be, since Leaf had taken full rank, and Dusk would be doing his best to train the cat entrusted to him. "I haven't yet," Skyteller replied, leaning down to sniff at the cooled prey. "Has Moth been given prey yet? Our kit-mother and elders should eat first." No matter how hungry he was, he could wait until the she-cat nursing kits had taken prey before anyone else. "Unless one of your brothers or your sister has done so. Have you seen them about yet this morning?" Rising again, he gave Eagle a smile. "Let's go find out if our kit-mothers and elders have eaten, and if so, I would love to share this prey with you. I imagine you haven't eaten yet, either- or did River let you grab a quick bite before your patrol?" @calico
